Also, we found subjective well-being to differ significantly on the demographic variable registered residence. 2) Subjective well-being played a mediating role between PA and anxiety. 3) Gender played a moderating role in the direct effect of PA on anxiety, shown by the significant difference in the path coefficients between the male and female models (male: β = − 0.03, p > 0.05, female: β = 0.10, p < 0.05).Conclusion: Subjective well-being mediated the relationship between PA and anxiety, and gender moderated the mediating model. These findings highlight the importance of PA in reducing anxiety and increasing subjective well-being in the context of an epidemic.Keywords: subjective well-being, physical activity, anxiety, college students

The relationship between physical activity (PA) and physical fitness (PF) has been well established among college students. However, the impact of this relationship after 1 year of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown measures is unclear. This study aimed to test the relationship between PA and PF, exploring the trend across four years, the different components of PF related to PA, and their determinants, by analyzing specific items. A total of 1506 university students (19.48 ± 1.35 years old, 55.8% male) in years 1–4 at two comprehensive universities in Shanghai were recruited after one year of COVID restrictions and asked to complete the PF measurements and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ Chinese Short version). The PA level is categorized into three types of intensity (low-moderate-high), and the level of PF is represented by the total test score of each item. Results show that PA was significantly positively correlated with PF; PA levels significantly predicted 1000m-run, 50m-sprint, and standing-long-jump in males, and 800m-sprint and sit-ups in females. Males predominantly had high-intensity PA, whereas females maintained moderate-intensity PA over four academic years. Meanwhile, PA and PF both trended downward as academic years increased in males and females, which could be attributed to a decline in high-intensity PA. The following two recommendations were obtained from the study: first, college students should engage in high-intensity PA activities after the end of the epidemic. Second, colleges offer physical education classes for four academic years of college students to promote PA and PF.

Global COVID-19 lockdown measures have led to an apparent decrease in physical activity. This study aimed to explore the explanatory function of self-control’s mediating role between self-efficacy and physical activity among college students. The analysis used the data of 1627 university students (aged 19.41 ± 0.66, range 17–28, 40.5% males) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Self-efficacy, self-control, and physical activity were tested, respectively, by the general self-efficacy scale, the new brief self-control scale, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) scale, which were analyzed by SPSS software. Correlation analysis showed that self-efficacy, self-control, and physical activity were related in pairs. Comparing the two dimensions of self-control, we found that self-discipline mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and PA, and impulse control did not mediate the relationship. Regarding the gender difference according to multi-group analysis, findings showed that females need higher self-discipline from the path of self-efficacy to physical activity improvement than males.

The central research question was: Why do Chinese students want to study in the United States? The participants were 20 Chinese students who studied in the U.S. Ten interview questions were used and data were processed in NVivo 10. Five major themes emerged from this study: (a) American culture benefits foreign perceptions of education in the U.S.; (b) increased personal wealth increases demands for educational freedom; (c) Chinese test performance does not indicate education quality; (d) Chinese culture clashes with students’ desire for self-actualization; and (e) an education in the U.S. is considered an immigration stepping stone.

In a business organization, communication is imperative for employers to express their thoughts, ideas, policies, and goals to their employees. Different organizational leaders or managers have various communication styles. Effective communication between employers and employees would not only boost employees' morale and job performance, but also demonstrate employers' successful leadership. Are communication and job satisfaction related? How should employers communicate so that their employees have higher job satisfaction, better engagement, lower turnover, and stronger long-term commitment? The purpose of this chapter is to explore the relationship between communication and employees' job satisfaction. This chapter attempts to provide business executives, company leaders, and scholar-practitioners suggestions with regard to developing effective communication strategies for better company management.

The term “third coast” originated in Houston, Texas, in the seventies to describe growing significant activity in the arts in US southern states bordering the Gulf of Mexico. New and live-electronic music thrives as well in the inland cities of San Antonio, Austin, the Dallas/Ft. Worth “metroplex”, and at the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia in Denton. Alternating with explanatory text is a transcription of an informal conversation between Texas composers Austin and Jerry Hunt, discussing the technology and aesthetics at issue in live-electronic music. They describe their own works, including Hunt's Sur (Doctor) John Dee (1967) and Flund (1987) and Austin's Accidents (1967) and Beachcombers (1983), elucidating the musico-dramatic, technical, and poetic dimensions of each piece.

The three authors each explore an aspect of Larry Austin's 1990 extended composition for radio broadcast. Composer-writer Charles Boone examines the work for its musical and dramatic interest and for its significance as a hybrid of Horspiel, with elements of theater, portraiture and sound collage. Its scope, means, intent, realization and compositional approach are elaborated by Austin, the com poser. Throughout his section, he intersperses aphorisms drawn from his conversations with the seven protagonists of his 'sound movie'. Austin's collaborator, computer music scientist Xavier Serra, explicates the technical/theoretical genesis of TT:TGE's computer generated speech sounds.

Silence. John Cage died on Wednesday, 12 August 1992. Silence. For me, as for so many, John was a beloved friend, sponsor, and mentor. My personal and professional associations with John spanned three decades and two continents of not infrequent meetings, his affectionate greetings with hugs and kisses remembered so fondly by me, my wife Edna, and our five children, who grew up knowing John as "Dad's friend." Memories. Silence.

Larry Austin and Thomas Clark have frequently collaborated on projects such as hosting the 1981 International Computer Music Conference, establishing the Events Series at the University of North Texas, where they are colleagues, and an article for Perspectives of New Music in 1984. Recently, they have coauthored a forthcoming textbook, Learning to Compose: Modes, Materials, and Models of Musical Invention. The following conversation about Austin's work as a composer is a natural continuation of their regular discussions about issues of new music, composition, and computer music.

THE ELEVENTH ANNUAL International Computer Music Conference was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, August 19-22,1985. The venues for the first three days were downtown Vancouver by day at the Robson Square Media Centre, and, by night, the mountaintop campus of Simon Fraser University, overlooking Vancouver, for each of three evening concerts. The fourth and final day was held on the sun-drenched SFU campus. Bathing in a warm sun and cool Pacific breeze, the conferees reveled in the magnificent panorama of Vancouver and the mountains surrounding that beautiful city. The ICMC, a stimulating mix of paper sessions, concerts, and listening sessions, was expertly organized and directed by Barry Truax of Simon Fraser University and assisted by a dedicated professional staff. This report centers on the eleven concerts and listening sessions presented at the 1985 ICMC.
