Con el objetivo de llegar a un mejor conocimiento del principio del proceso de rotura de las presas de material suelto y obtener una herramienta que permita un análisis más riguroso de este fenómeno, se está desarrollando el proyecto XPRES financiado por el Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia [XPRES 2007-2010]. El proyecto consta de una parte experimental, llevada a cabo por CEDEX y UPM conjuntamente, y de una parte numérica, desarrollada en el Centro Internacional de Métodos Numéricos en Ingeniería (CIMNE). En el presente trabajo se quiere presentar lo que CIMNE está realizando para crear una herramienta de cálculo para el análisis del comportamiento de una presa de escollera durante un sobrevertido, que, por su incidencia en la seguridad de la presa y su entorno, merece un tratamiento más preciso. La nueva metodología permite analizar con detalle el estado de tensión y deformación de la presa y su posible rotura parcial, o catastrófica, bajo la acción del flujo de agua y combina métodos de elementos finitos avanzados con métodos de partículas.

The aim of this work is to study the consequences of an overtopping on the stability of earth dams and its possible failure mode. Rehabilitation and safety analysis of existing dams is nowadays an open field of research. The possibility to define a numerical instrument to provide support for analyzing the failure of a dam is a big step ahead for organizing the intervention measures and for optimizing the economic plan. In fact many existing dams have now to be modified due to the revision of previous design criteria in order to increase their safety. The objective of our work is to develop and validate a new computational method of general applicability that allows treating the above problems. The method will combine advanced finite element and particle techniques. Fluid-structure interaction effects and non-linear geometrical and mechanical effects in the dam material are considered. A mixed Lagrangian and Eulerian approach is used. The fluid behavior is described using a modified form of the Navier Stokes equations in order to consider the effect of a variable porosity. A non linear Darcy law is included in the momentum equation. A level set function is chosen to follow the movement of the free surface inside and outside the porous medium. The structure is described using a purely lagrangian PFEM formulation [1] and [2]. The specific features of PFEM make it appropriate to treat the rockfill material and its large deformations and shape changes. This paper presents the work carried out during the last years for the creation of a numerical model to simulate transient seepage phenomena in rockfill dams when overtopping occurs. The objective is to analyze the trigger of failure mechanism in the downstream slope due to hydrodynamic forces. The current work aims to give a contribution to this field proposing a new computational method of general applicability for simulating, with a unique formulation, the flow throughout and over the dam while failure occurs together with the dam structural response. The numerical results are validated with experiments on scale models rockfill dams.

Several comparisons between experiments and computational models are presented in the following pages. The objective is to verify the ability of Particle Finite Elements Methods (PFEM) to reproduce hydraulic phenomena involving large deformation of the fluid domain.

El objetivo de este trabajo es desarrollar y validar un nuevo método de cálculo de aplicabilidad general para el estudio de la estabilidad y seguridad de una presa de escollera durante un sobrevertido. Esta nueva herramienta permite analizar con detalle el estado tenso-deformacional de la presa y su posible rotura y eventual desmoronamiento bajo la acción del flujo de agua y combina métodos de elementos finitos avanzados con métodos de partículas. Esta técnica, denominada PFEM (particle finite element method), permite tener en cuenta de las complejas no-linealidades geométricas y mecánicas enproblemas de interacción fluido-estructura, incluyendo fenómenos de superficie libre y de erosión. En el trabajo se describen las características esenciales del PFEM y se detalla la aplicación de este método para modelar el sobrevertido en presas de escollera y su eventual desplome. Este tabajo numérico se combina con una parte experimental que se desarrolla en el CEDEX y en la ETS de Ingenieros de Caminos de Madrid en el marco del proyecto XPRES.

The development of overtopping protection systems often requires detailed analyses of complex physical phenomena. This hinders the comprehensive knowledge of their behavior, and therefore the development of suitable design criteria. In recent years, the authors have developed and validated different methods, combining continuous, particle and discrete numerical techniques, to obtain accurate and reliable solutions of different numerical problems involving fluid-soil-structure interaction. In this contribution, some applications of these methods to the study of dam protection against overtopping are presented. The main advantages of this approach include the ability to extract results of the governing variables (pressure, velocity) at any location of the domain, and the possibility to consider scenarios without the restrictions of the experimental facilities (flow rates, size, scale effects). In particular, the contribution gathers examples of application of numerical methods in a) analysis of rockfill dam stability against overtopping, including seepage evolution and deformation of the downstream shoulder, and b) stability analysis of wedge-shaped-blocks subjected to vandalism.

This work presents a model which allows considering the interaction between rockfill dams and the water. The fluid behaviour is analyzed on an Eulerian fixed mesh. A level set technique is employed to tack the evolution of the free surface. An edge based approach is used to solve efficiently the modified form of the Navier‐Stokes equations. The dam response is evaluated on a Lagrangian moving mesh using PFEM. A visco‐rigid constitutive model is used to describe the structural behaviour and collapse of rockfill under fluid dynamic forces. Mohr‐Coulomb is the failure criteria adopted in thecalculation. Finally a nodal projection algorithm allows the transferring of information through non matching meshes.

In recent years the technology on embankments dams has developed sensibly due to the advances in soil mechanic, and in all related sciences. Nevertheless their vulnerability to overtopping still remains their weakest point in comparison with concrete structures. The principal aim of this theme is the simulation of the initial stage of failure of the dam when an overtopping or an exceptional flood occurs. A fluid-structure coupled problem has to be considered. The sudden variation of the upstream conditions induces a quick evolution of a seepage line in the downstream shoulder. Non linear Darcy law has to be taken into account. On the other hand the water, emerging from the toe of the dam, induces dragging of particles and possible mass sliding, depending on geometrical and material conditions. UPM and CEDEX have carried out more than 70 experiments during the last two years. They analyzed the influence of a series of parameters on the failure mechanisms. These parameters are, for instance, the dimension of the rocks, the slope of the downstream part of the dam, the type of impermeable element used, and so on. We propose to reproduce numerically three experiments analyzing the evolution of seepage and following initial stage of failure in the case of a homogeneous dam, of a dam with impermeable upstream face and of a dam with internal core. Experimental data, bottom pressure distribution and topographic analysis of the geometry of the dam during the failure can be compared with numerical results.

El objetivo de este trabajo es desarrollar una herramienta de aplicabilidad general que ayude en el estudio de la estabilidad y seguridad de una presa de escollera en una avenida extraordinaria que origina un sobrevertido. se combinan métodos eulerianos para el cálculo de flujo de agua fuera y dentro de la presa con métodos lagrangianos de elementos finitos y partículas para analizar el comportamiento tenso-deformacional de la presa y su posible rotura y eventual desmoronamiento bajo la acción del agua. Finalmente se presenta un método para la proyección de datos entre mallas no coincidentes que permita el acomplamiento fluido-estructura.

In recent years the technology on embankments dams has developed sensibly due to the advances in soil mechanic, and in all related sciences. Nevertheless their vulnerability to overtopping is still an open theme of discussion. Such an extreme phenomenon can lead to catastrophic consequences with loss of stability and failure of the entire structure. In spite of that, the consequences of an overtopping are still difficult to analyze and to prevent optimally. The possibility to define a numerical instrument to provide support for analyzing the failure of a dam is an important step ahead fororganizing the intervention measures and for optimizing the economic plan. This is the principal reason why the Spanish ministry of Science and Innovation is funding the XPRES project, between the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), the Centre for Hydrographical Studies of CEDEX and the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE). The characterization of the failure process is dealt with by combining new numerical models, developed by CIMNE, with experimental tests on physical models of different sizes and scales carried out by UPM and CEDEX. In the present paper the work carried out by CIMNE is presented. The numerical model is based on combination of Lagrangian Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) and Eulerian level set techniques in order to optimize the coupling between the dynamic effect of water inside and outside the dam, with the structural deformation and collapse induced on the down stream shoulder. The breaching formation and the consequent beginning of the failure are analyzed with particular interest. The specific features of the adopted method make it appropriate to treat the rockfill material and its large deformations and shape changes. A variable viscosity law and an energetic erosion criterion are used to take into account mass sliding and erosion acting in combined or alternative way

Las presas de materiales sueltos funcionan como presas de gravedad, el peso propio de los materiales que la componen aportan la resistencia necesaria para soportar el empuje horizontal y la flexión que producen las aguas en el trasdós. El inconveniente principal de éstas presas está en el sobrevertido. Si se produce una avenida y el agua vierte sobre la presa, ésta se comporta de manera inestable y puede colapsarse y desmoronarse. Se sabe que este fenómeno del sobrevertido es una de las principales razones por las que colapsan este tipo de presas, pero se trata de un fenómeno poco conocido ypoco desarrollado. Por ello existe un interés cada vez mayor en el estudio del comportamiento de las presas de materiales sueltos cuando se lleva a cabo el llenado, y el sobrevertido de agua sobre el talud aguas abajo. Este estudio está limitado por la ausencia de un método de cálculo, por lo que es esencial llegar a constituir un método numérico que modelice el comportamiento físico de estos procesos en dichas presas.

Bulk handling, transport and processing of granular materials and powders are fundamental operations in a wide range of industrial processes and geophysical phenomena. Particulate materials, which can be found in nature, are usually characterized by a grain size which can range across several scales: from nanometre to the order of metre. Depending on the volume fraction and on the shear strain conditions, granular materials can have different behaviours and often can be expressed as a new state of matter with properties of solids, liquids and gases. For the above reasons, both the experimental and the numerical analysis of granular media is still a difficult task and the prediction of their dynamic behaviour still represents, nowadays, an important challenge. The main goal of the current monograph is the development of a numerical strategy with the objective of studying the macroscopic behaviour of dry granular flows in quasi-static and dense flow regime. The problem is defined in a continuum mechanics framework and the balance laws, which govern the behaviour of a solid body, are solved by using a Lagrangian formalism. The Material Point Method (MPM), a particle-based method, is chosen due to its features which make it very suitable for the solution of large deformation problems involving complex history-dependent constitutive laws. An irreducible formulation using a Mohr-Coulomb constitutive law, which takes into account geometric non-linearities, is implemented within the MPM framework. The numerical strategy is verified and validated against several benchmark tests and experimental results, available in the literature. Further, a mixed formulation is implemented for the solution of granular flows that undergo undrained conditions. Finally, the developed MPM strategy is used and tested against the experimental study performed for the characterization of the flowability of several types of sucrose. The capabilities and limitations of this numerical strategy are observed and discussed and the bases for future research are outlined.

Actualmente las presas de materiales sueltos son la tipología cuya elección es más frecuente debido, en parte, a los grandes avances que se han hecho en el estudio de los materiales que se utilizan en este tipo de estructuras, a la gran facilidad de encontrarlos y a su bajo coste y, por otra parte, a su adaptabilidad a una amplia variedad de emplazamientos. Sin embargo, hay que tener en cuenta su gran vulnerabilidad frente a fenómenos de sobrevertido, que pueden comprometer seriamente la estructura e incluso causar su colapso. Es por todo esto que en los últimos años se está manifestando un interés creciente en el estudio del comportamiento de las presas de material sueltos frente a fenómenos extremos. Esta tesina se enmarca en el contexto del proyecto XPRES del Plan Nacional I+D del Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia [2], cuyo principal objetivo es desarrollar un método computacional para el análisis de la evolución de la filtración, así como el seguimiento del proceso de rotura en las presas de escollera en caso de sobrevertido. Este objetivo requiere el desarrollo de dos modelos numéricos acoplables, uno que modelice el proceso de filtración en el cuerpo de la presa y otro que modelice la respuesta estructural. Se pretende abordar la validación de los algoritmos desarrollados por CIMNE para la modelización de la filtración y determinar cuál de ellos presenta las mejores características para su aplicación en casos reales. La validación se llevará a cabo utilizando Kratos, un código abierto C++ que se está desarrollando en CIMNE pensado para resolver problemas de multifísica mediante el método de los elementos finitos. Los resultados numéricos se compararán los datos experimentales proporcionados por CEDEX y UPM y los modelos teóricos obtenidos por UPM. Esta validación se centrará, principalmente, en el modelo en dos dimensiones, aunque se hará extensible al caso en tres dimensiones.

Landslide‐generated impulse waves may have catastrophic consequences. The physical phenomenon is difficult to model because of the uncertainties in the kinematics of the mobilised material and to the intrinsic complexity of the fluid–soil interaction. The particle finite element method (PFEM) is a numerical scheme that has successfully been applied to fluid–structure interaction problems. It uses a Lagrangian description to model the motion of nodes (particles) in both the fluid and the solid domains (the latter including soil/rock and structures). A mesh connecting the particles (nodes) is re‐generated at every time step, where the governing equations are solved. Various constitutive laws are used for the sliding mass, including rigid solid and the Newtonian and non‐Newtonian fluids. Several examples of application are presented, corresponding both to experimental tests and to actual full‐scale case studies. The results show that the PFEM can be a useful tool for analysing the risks associated with landslide phenomena, providing a good estimate to the potential hazards even for full‐scale events.

Current chapter tries to give an overview of theoretic background necessary to deal with fluid dynamic problems with Finite Element Method (PFEM) approach. Starting form a brief summary of the principle steps of the development of the theory, we analyze the differences between the classical world of fluids, finding out finally the principle equations that control these problems.

The paper presents an overview of the computational tools developed in CIMNE for the analysis of the behavior of rockfill dams in overtopping scenarios, as well as for the design of protection systems against overtopping. In this latter case, two different applications are presented: the design tool for a wedge-shaped blocks (WSB) shoulder protection and the computational models for the analysis of the hydraulic performance of highly convergent spillways. Advanced finite element techniques are combined with particle techniques and artificial neural networks in the framework of the Kratos Multiphysics for reaching the optimal solution procedure for any of the abovementioned problems. An extensive validation is carried out using experimental data provided by the SERPA group of the Technical University of Madrid.

Síntesis del procedimiento de diseño formulado en la tesis doctoral de Rafael Morán. La demanda de seguridad en infraestructuras críticas ha aumentado en los últimos años, especialmente en los países con mayor nivel de desarrollo económico y social. En estos países, el control del estado de la seguridad de estas infraestructuras y las medidas para disminuir los riesgos asociados en caso de avería están adquiriendo una gran relevancia, lo que se ha plasmado en unas normativas más exigentes. Las presas están dentro de este tipo de infraestructuras tanto por su interés estratégico como por los daños que pueden llegar a ocasionar en caso de un mal funcionamiento o de su eventual rotura. La tecnología de protecciones de presas surge como respuesta a esta demanda de seguridad y, por este motivo, ha experimentado un gran avance en las últimas décadas. Dentro de este artículo se va a describir la protección tipo repié y el procedimiento de diseño propuesto para evitar el deslizamiento en masa de presas con espaldón de aguas abajo de escollera, cuando se produce una filtración anormalmente elevada debido a un fallo en la impermeabilidad en el conjunto presa-cimiento. El artículo describe brevemente el estado del arte de la tecnología y de sus aplicaciones así como de la innovación conseguida en este campo a partir de las investigaciones desarrolladas en la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), en colaboración con el Centro de Estudios Hidrográficos del CEDEX y el Centro Internacional de Métodos Numéricos en la Ingeniería (CIMNE), en el marco del proyecto de investigación del Plan Nacional denominado EDAMS.

We present an efficient technique for the solution of free surface flow problems using level set and a parallel edge‐based finite element method. An unstructured semi‐explicit solution scheme is proposed. A custom data structure, obtained by blending node‐based and edge‐based approaches is presented so to allow a good parallel performance. In addition to standard velocity extrapolation (for the convection of the level set function), an explicit extrapolation of the pressure field is performed in order to impose both the pressure boundary condition and the volume conservation. The latter is also improved with a modification of the divergence free constrain. The method is shown to allow an efficient solution of both simple benchmark cases and complex industrial examples

Las curvas de desagüe de aliviaderos con compuertas, que permiten conocer el caudal que se está vertiendo en unas condiciones (nivel de embalse, apertura de compuerta) determinadas, suelen calcularse en base a formulaciones empíricas. La más utilizada, que es también la que recomienda la Guía Técnica de Seguridad de Presas nº 5 [1], es la desarrollada por el USACE [2]. Se basa en una campaña de ensayos en laboratorio a partir de la cual se obtuvo una curva que permite calcular el coeficiente de desagüe en función de la posición de la compuerta. Esta formulación no tiene en cuenta (se indica explícitamente) el efecto de contracción de la lámina, que depende de la relación entre el ancho de vano y la altura de lámina vertiente. Por tanto, debe considerarse como una primera aproximación a cada caso particular. Como consecuencia de ello, resulta necesario realizar campañas de ensayos en laboratorio específicas para cada nuevo aliviadero que se proyecta. En el presente trabajo se estudia la capacidad de desagüe de aliviaderos con compuertas radiales mediante la aplicación de un código de cálculo numérico al caso del aliviadero de la presa de Oliana. La presa de Oliana [5] es una presa de gravedad de hormigón, situada sobre el cauce del río Segre entre los términos municipales de Oliana y Peramola. Tiene una altura total desde cimientos de 102 m y su coronación, situada a la cota 519,60, tiene una longitud de 268 m. Su planta es curva, pero su talud es de 0,87 H: 1,0 V, por lo que está diseñada para resistir por gravedad. Tiene un aliviadero de superficie, situado sobre la propia coronación de la presa. Consta de dos vanos de 17 m de ancho cada uno, que están controlados por sendas compuertas tipo Taintor. El canal de descarga se sitúa sobre el paramento de aguas abajo de la presa, si bien está retranqueado hacia aguas arriba, para reducir la altura de los muros cajeros.

Como consecuencia del desarrollo de un Proyecto de Investigación, el CEDEX, la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y el CIMNE han trabajado conjuntamente en el desarrollo de un método para el estudio del proceso de rotura de presas de escollera por sobrevertido combinando técnicas de elementos finitos y partículas. Para ello se han realizado y analizado 80 ensayos en modelo físico en las instalaciones del CEDEX y UPM, utilizando seis tamaños de material, cuatro taludes distintos (1,5H:1V; 2,2H:1V; 3,0H:1V y 3,5H:1V) y tres opciones de impermeabilización (sin pantalla, núcleo interno y pantalla externa). Estos ensayos están permitiendo conocer mejor el fenómeno y calibrar el modelo matemático. El modelo matemático basa su desarrollo en el acoplamiento de dos fenómenos: la filtración del agua en un medio granular (simulada mediante una malla euleriana) y la erosión del propio material granular (simulada mediante una malla lagrangiana). Durante 2010 se prevé finalizar la construcción, en el CEDEX, de un canal de grandes dimensiones que permitirá ensayar presas de hasta 4 m de altura en condiciones de laboratorio, que servirán como prototipo para el análisis del efecto de escala. Este prototipo aumentará considerablemente la fiabilidad de las conclusiones obtenidas.
