Abstract

The world's cultural heritage (customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions, and values that signify a legacy of the history of humanity) provides identity to communities. In Mexico, the case of the World Heritage City of Xochimilco involves a sustainable agroecological system designed by its ancient inhabitants more than 500 years ago. Currently, the biodiversity and the chinampas (floating agricultural gardens) are at risk due to inconsistent government oversight and the lack of incentives for communities to carry on with the culture of agricultural production on Lake Xochimilco. Through a Challenge-Based Learning, a culturally relevant academic experience for university students was designed to involve them in preserving biodiversity while developing research and problem-solving skills. Satisfaction surveys and course evaluations indicated that this didactic methodology encouraged students to consider their connection to social justice issues and prompted them to expand their knowledge in their different disciplines. Socially-oriented experiential learning is an effective pedagogy that fosters a sense of social responsibility in students.

Abstract

With increasing market demands and new technology advances, manufacturing is aspiring to achieve automation with high productivity and improved precision and control. As a result, extensive research aiming to improve the performance of machining processes can be found. Undesired vibration within precision manufacturing processes is a major source of poor surface finish, increased tool wear, and poor dimensional accuracy. Chatter, i.e. self-excited vibration, is considered one of the critical sources of vibration that unfavourably affects the quality and productivity of high-speed manufacturing processes. This research investigates the controllability of the vibration characteristics of magnetorheological (MR) structures as a precursor to a future vibration control system.

17. A Review on the Advances in Socially Oriented Education.

Abstract

An academic focus on Socially Oriented Education (SOE) has been proposed to accomplish the call of the United Nations to transform educational systems due to the dynamics of contemporary society. This work aims to map the SOE-related literature, providing an overview of the 21st-century approaches to answer the questions: (i) How is SOE defined, and what other concepts are related to it? (ii) Are there any theories involved in developing SOE? (iii) What would be the different study areas that involve SOE? SOE has been used in the academic literature to refer to educational approaches that prioritize social and ethical development, civic engagement, and social justice. Now, it should expand its reach to address pressing issues such as climate change and inequality. It should also shift toward a more student-centered approach, emphasizing student agency and empowerment. SOE should prioritize promoting intercultural competence and preparing students for a globalized world. Technology can be integrated with state-owned enterprises to create innovative learning experiences. The main function of SOE is to solve current societal problems using education as a powerful tool for transformation. Abstract

Our university has implemented the Tec21 educational model, based on four fundamental pillars: Challenge-Based Learning (CBL), flexibility, inspiring trained faculty, and a memorable educational experience. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of CBL implementation experiences at the beginning of undergraduate engineering programs using technological innovations such as 3D printing, DC motors, and microcontrollers. Three challenges were designed: Rube Goldberg, Cable Car, and Mini Drag Race. The challenges were implemented during at least two years where over 1,000 engineering freshmen took part. The challenges were evaluated by quantitative and qualitative methods. Overall, students enjoyed the learning experiences, learnt new technologies, and developed disciplinary and transversal competencies. Students were also more engaged and motivated to pursue their engineering academic program. These strategies challenged the students with the basic characteristics of the new Tec21 educational model. Finally, faculty involved in the implementation of these challenges expressed they required to get out of their comfort zone, learn new technologies, and change their traditional role to become a coach. Abstract

[EN] The use of multimedia in education has become a basic tool for educators. As Millennials and Generation Z use technology in their everyday life, the educational model has been shifting towards the use of multimedia and technology to enhance the active learning process. The objective of this project was to design, produce and implement short educational or instructional videos to present content with a more active approach and measure the impact on their understanding and preference. A video with the content of graduation requirements was produced, shared with 240 seniors of Engineering Academic Programs. The results show that 97% of the students liked the video and the way the content was shared and 91.6% of the students find the video format useful. The results show that the learning process was active and effective. The exit poll also shows that 97% of the students think that there should be more educational videos on some other processes. This project included the design, production and implementation of 18 videos. This research describes the approach and impact of using short videos in engineering and transition from a traditional method of sharing content to students to a more active learning environment.

Abstract

In this paper we present a holistic perspective of what conscious mobility consists of, focusing on electromobility as the principal driver through a more efficient and greener transportation system. Three Sustainable Development Goals (SDG´s) are mentioned, being a point of reference for a critical route towards the 2030 United Nations agenda, these in conjunction with the project dimensions and frameworks proposed, give as a result a first draft of how a methodology for smart mobility in mexican cities could be. This methodology includes several diagnostics meant for specific size areas that leads to a planning phase where private and public requirements, and aspirations should be analyzed. It can be found that there is a social dimension that has been disassociated from mobility and the optimal way to transit from fuel-based transport to renewable energy is through electromobility, but the success of this transition will rely on PPP’s actions required to create a functional electromobility system. Abstract

Mechatronics is the science that studies the holistic design process in which intelligent machines are created to develop efficient and complex processes and products. Mechatronics integrates mechanics, electronics and computer sciences to achieve control and automation. The effective integration of these different components is a complex task that should be accomplished in the design phase. This work presents a systems approach to a mechatronics design course at ITESM, México. In their final year, engineering students are taught a methodology to design a mechatronic product. The methodology includes: the early stages of clients" needs identification, process characterization, literature review, and ideas generation, which lead to both the design and simulation of the mechanical electronic and control stages. This series of steps is inspired in a number of different design methodologies, which are available from the literature and can be adapted to the available tools and circumstances at the university. This paper describes a practical way to integrate the existing specialised techniques and tools to generate an efficient design of a mechatronic product. Some of the virtual tools that are available to design, evaluate and integrate the different parts of a mechatronic design are also discussed The systems approach was applied by the students to different mechatronic projects in industry, thus creating good links between university and manufacturing companies with satisfactory results.
