Humankind is currently experiencing changes in the climate system and more changes are projected to occur in the next decades. For the transport sector, it is not only important to contribute to the mitigation of climate change in order to limit climatic changes to a manageable level, but also to manage unavoidable changes and related impacts on infrastructure and mobility by adapting transport infrastructure assets and services to the new conditions in which they will operate. The challenge of providing a climate resilient transport system is taken up by the BMDV Network of Experts – a research network of seven Federal Agencies under the German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transportation (BMDV).Transport infrastructures and traffic flows along the federal roads, railways and inland waterways vulnerable to climate changes today and in future are to be identified. This is done using specific impact models as well as climate indices that serve as proxies for expected damages. These climate change impact analyses are done based on common data sets, scenario assumptions and assessment methods that allow for a comparable assessment over all modes of transport. Climate impacts that are studied within the BMDV Network of Experts are storms―windthrow, heavy precipitation―flash floods, erosion and landslides, enduring precipitation―flooding, drought―low flows and embankment fires, and sea level rise―tidal dynamics. Exemplarily, adaptation measures are developed in order to increase the climate resilience of the transport modes.The research network has a strong practical orientation; the demands and questions of the infrastructure operators are integrated in the conception of research questions. The data, methods and results obtained by the research program BMDV Network of Experts are included in the operational services within the DAS core service “climate and water” (https://www.das-basisdienst.de/) that was established in 2020. These services support the climate change adaptation of transport and mobility in Germany, while many of the specific data, methods and analysis tools are also relevant for other fields of action like water management, coastal protection, construction engineering or the energy sector. The ongoing close dialogue between science, policy and practice is thereby of great importance in order to provide useful and targeted services.

Climate extremes over the mid-latitudes are driven by a combination of thermodynamical and dynamical factors. In Europe, the primary dynamical driver of summer climate extremes is the position of the jet stream over the Europe-North Atlantic (EU) region. In certain configurations, the EU jet creates a summer climate dipole between northwestern and southeastern Europe that can result in contrasting extreme weather conditions in the two regions. To study long-term variability in the EU jet configuration, as well as its potential impact on past climate extremes and human systems, we have reconstructed EU jet variability over the past 800+ years (1200-2005 CE). To accomplish this, we have combined five European tree-ring chronologies to reconstruct the July-August jet stream latitude for the EU domain (30°W - 40°E; EU JSL). Our reconstruction explains 40% of summer EU JSL variability over the instrumental period (1948-2005 CE) with strong skill.We find that, over the past 800 years, opposite phases of EU JSL variability have consistently resulted in contrasting climate extremes, including heatwaves, droughts, floods, and wildfires, between northwestern Europe, specifically the British Isles, and southeastern Europe, specifically the Balkans and Italy. This EU JSL-driven summer climate dipole is captured in a network of historical documentary data that further document the societal impacts of EU JSL-related climate extremes on both sides of the dipole.Our summer EU JSL reconstruction shows a century-long negative phase from ca. 1355-1450 CE, corresponding to anomalously wet and cool summers over the British Isles and dry and hot conditions over the Balkans. This negative phase is comparable to the recent (1970-present) EU JSL configuration. We also found a positive phase, with opposite summer climate dipole conditions, from ca. 1812-1861 CE. Our results thus suggest that the EU JSL has been a long-term primary driver of the European summer climate dipole, as well as of the associated climate extremes and societal impacts.

The Mediterranean has been identified as particularly vulnerable to climate change, yet a high-resolution temperature reconstruction extending back into the Medieval Warm Period is still lacking. Here we present such a record from a high-elevation site on Mt. Smolikas in northern Greece, where some of Europe’s oldest trees provide evidence of warm season temperature variability back to 730 CE. The reconstruction is derived from 192 annually resolved, latewood density series from ancient living and relict Pinus heldreichii trees calibrating at r1911–2015 = 0.73 against regional July–September (JAS) temperatures. Although the recent 1985–2014 period was the warmest 30-year interval (JAS Twrt.1961–1990 = + 0.71 °C) since the eleventh century, temperatures during the ninth to tenth centuries were even warmer, including the warmest reconstructed 30-year period from 876–905 (+ 0.78 °C). These differences between warm periods are statistically insignificant though. Several distinct cold episodes punctuate the Little Ice Age, albeit the coldest 30-year period is centered during high medieval times from 997–1026 (− 1.63 °C). Comparison with reconstructions from the Alps and Scandinavia shows that a similar cold episode occurred in central Europe but was absent at northern latitudes. The reconstructions also reveal different millennial-scale temperature trends (NEur = − 0.73 °C/1000 years, CEur = − 0.13 °C, SEur = + 0.23 °C) potentially triggered by latitudinal changes in summer insolation due to orbital forcing. These features, the opposing millennial-scale temperature trends and the medieval multi-decadal cooling recorded in Central Europe and the Mediterranean, are not well captured in state-of-the-art climate model simulations.

The jet stream configuration over the Atlantic Ocean and the European continent substantially affects climatic extremes in Western Eurasia by transporting heat and vorticity. However, how the Europe-Atlantic jet configuration varies and how it affects European climate on the long time-scales are still unclear. We compiled a network of tree-ring width, blue intensity, and maximum density chronologies from Europe to explore past variability in the summer Europe-Atlantic Jet stream and its influence on regional climate. By combining five regional chronologies, we were able to reconstruct July-August jet stream latitude (JSL) PC2 variability over the past millennium (978-2010 CE) for the Europe-Atlantic domain (30°W to 40°E). Our reconstruction explains 40% of summer JSL PC2 variability over the instrumental period (1948-2010 CE) with strong skill. Our millennial-long reconstruction shows that summer JSL is a relevant driver of the temperature, precipitation, and drought dipoles observed between Northwestern and Southern Europe. Positive summer JSL PC2 values (northward jet position) generally lead to a strengthening of the European summer climate dipole, while negative values (southward jet position) lead to a weak or insignificant dipole mode. Our summer JSL reconstruction shows large variability and a high occurrence rate of extremes over the 20th century, as well as 1200-1350 CE Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA). The high occurrence rate of summer JSL extremes corresponds to periods with increased number of climatic extremes. Our results suggest that the summer JSL contributes to the European climate dipole both in a long-term context and in its extremes. We also reveal that the occurrence rate of summer JSL extremes is double during the 20th century compared to other periods, especially for the negative extremes, which might be related to anthropogenic warming. Our results suggest a high occurrence rate of summer JSL extremes during the 20th century, leading to more climatic extremes in Europe, as well as a prevailing northward summer JSL position resulting in a weakening climatic dipole.

A recent increase in mid-latitude extreme weather events has been linked to anomalies in the position, strength, and waviness of the Northern Hemisphere polar jet stream. The latitudinal position of the North Atlantic Jet (NAJ) in particular drives climatic extremes over Europe, by controlling the location of the Atlantic storm track and by influencing the occurrence and duration of atmospheric blocking. To put recent NAJ trends in a historical perspective and to investigate non-linear relationships between jet stream position, mid-latitude extreme weather events, and anthropogenic climate change, long-term records of NAJ variability are needed. Here, we combine two tree-ring based summer temperature reconstructions from Scotland and from the Balkan Peninsula to reconstruct inter-annual variability in the latitudinal position of the summer NAJ back to 1200 CE. We find that over the past centuries, a northward summer NAJ position has resulted in heatwaves in northwestern Europe, whereas a southward position has promoted wildfires in southeastern Europe and floods in northwestern Europe. The great famine of 1315-1317 in northwestern Europe, for instance, was associated with prolonged flooding and cold summers that resulted in failed grain harvest and were related to a southern NAJ position. We further find an unprecedented increase in NAJ anomalies since the 1960s, which supports more sinuous jet stream patterns and quasi-resonant amplification as potential dynamic pathways for Arctic warming to influence midlatitude weather.

We present the longest high-elevation tree-ring width dataset in the Mediterranean reaching back to the 6th century CE. The network includes 101 living and 92 relict Pinus heldreichii Christ trees from four differently exposed sites in the 2100–2200 m a.s.l. elevation range of Mt. Smolikas in the Pindus Mountains in Greece. Though the sites were all sampled within a distance of 1550–2014 = 0.65–0.87), indicating site exposure might affect tree-ring formation. We here explore the consequence of exposure differences on the climate signals in an eastern Mediterranean treeline ecotone. Temporally stable growth/climate relationships reveal similar seasonal patterns among the four sites, but differences in signal strength. P. heldreichii growth at Mt. Smolikas is significantly controlled by temperature in April (r 1951–2014 = 0.33–0.50) and precipitation in June-July (r 1951–2014 = 0.23–0.42), which emphasizes the overall importance of an early growth onset and subsequent moisture conditions. The association between stem growth and April climate is strongest in the South-facing stand, supporting the significance of higher insolation rates at this thermally privileged site. Strongest summer precipitation signals are found in the NE-facing stand, where trees seem to benefit least from an early growth onset and where reduced meltwater supply may enhance the dependency on early summer precipitation. The significance of spring temperature on tree growth in all four sites constrains the emergence of a distinct summer precipitation signal in the Mt. Smolikas high elevation ecotone. Exploration of the site-specific influences on a new millennium-long tree-ring width dataset is an important step towards an improved understanding of long-term climate variability in the Eastern Mediterranean. Site-related differences in climate sensitivity in the high-elevation tree-ring network at Mt. Smolikas indicate that both temperature and precipitation during different seasons could potentially be reconstructed if distinct site exposures (S versus NE) are considered.

Maximum latewood density (MXD) measurements from high-elevation/-latitude sites are an important proxy for summer temperature reconstructions. Here, we present 201 MXD series from living larch (Larix decidua Mill.) trees that were growing at around 850 and 1450 m a.s.l. in the Slovakian Tatra Mountains, together with 56 MXD series from historical timbers of the same species and region. We explore the climate signal at the high- and low-elevation sites and assess the effects of varying temperature and precipitation regimes on MXD formation. Ranging from spring temperature to summer precipitation, the elevation-specific climate sensitivity suggests that the MXD measurements from living and relict sources should not be merged for paleoclimatic studies. This finding emphasizes the challenge of attributing a predominant climate factor that controls wood formation across a wide range of historical constructions. A better understanding of the ‘true’ climate signal requires more samples during the period of overlap between the living and historical trees.

© 2020 Elsevier GmbH Climate reconstructions for the Common Era are compromised by the paucity of annually-resolved and absolutely-dated proxy records prior to medieval times. Where reconstructions are based on combinations of different climate archive types (of varying spatiotemporal resolution, dating uncertainty, record length and predictive skill), it is challenging to estimate past amplitude ranges, disentangle the relative roles of natural and anthropogenic forcing, or probe deeper interrelationships between climate variability and human history. Here, we compile and analyse updated versions of all the existing summer temperature sensitive tree-ring width chronologies from the Northern Hemisphere that span the entire Common Era. We apply a novel ensemble approach to reconstruct extra-tropical summer temperatures from 1 to 2010 CE, and calculate uncertainties at continental to hemispheric scales. Peak warming in the 280s, 990s and 1020s, when volcanic forcing was low, was comparable to modern conditions until 2010 CE. The lowest June–August temperature anomaly in 536 not only marks the beginning of the coldest decade, but also defines the onset of the Late Antique Little Ice Age (LALIA). While prolonged warmth during Roman and medieval times roughly coincides with the tendency towards societal prosperity across much of the North Atlantic/European sector and East Asia, major episodes of volcanically-forced summer cooling often presaged widespread famines, plague outbreaks and political upheavals. Our study reveals a larger amplitude of spatially synchronized summer temperature variation during the first millennium of the Common Era than previously recognised.
