Summary: Despite some evidence indicating diverse roles of whirlin in neurons, the functional corollary of whirlin gene function and behavior has not been investigated or broadly characterized. A single nucleotide variant was identified from our recessive ENU-mutagenesis screen at a donor-splice site in whirlin, a protein critical for proper sensorineural hearing function. The mutation (head-bob, hb) led to partial intron-retention causing a frameshift and introducing a premature termination codon. Mutant mice had a head-bobbing phenotype and significant hyperactivity across several phenotyping tests. Lack of complementation of head-bob with whirler mutant mice confirmed the head-bob mutation as functionally distinct with compound mutants having a mild-moderate hearing defect. Utilizing transgenics, we demonstrate rescue of the hyperactive phenotype and combined with the expression profiling data conclude whirlin plays an essential role in activity-related behaviors. These results highlight a pleiotropic role of whirlin within the brain and implicate alternative, central mediated pathways in its function.

Adipose stem cells (ASCs) have multilineage differentiation capacity and hold great potential for regenerative medicine. Compared to bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (bmMSCs), ASCs are easier to isolate from abundant sources with significantly higher yields. It is generally accepted that bmMSCs show age-related changes in their proliferation and differentiation potentials, whereas this aspect is still controversial in the case of ASCs. In this review, we evaluated the existing data on the effect of donor age on the osteogenic potential of human ASCs. Overall, a poor agreement has been achieved because of inconsistent findings in the previous studies. Finally, we attempted to delineate the possible reasons behind the lack of agreements reported in the literature. ASCs represent a heterogeneous cell population, and the osteogenic potential of ASCs can be influenced by donor-related factors such as age, but also gender, lifestyle, and the underlying health and metabolic state of donors. Furthermore, future studies should consider experimental factors in in vitro conditions, including passaging, cryopreservation, culture conditions, variations in differentiation protocols, and readout methods.

The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is evolving, offering promising avenues for enhancing clinical decision making and patient management. Limited knowledge about lipedema often leads to patients being frequently misdiagnosed with conditions like lymphedema or obesity rather than correctly identifying lipedema. Furthermore, patients with lipedema often present with intricate and extensive medical histories, resulting in significant time consumption during consultations. AI could, therefore, improve the management of these patients. This research investigates the utilization of OpenAI’s Generative Pre-Trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4), a sophisticated large language model (LLM), as an assistant in consultations for lipedema patients. Six simulated scenarios were designed to mirror typical patient consultations commonly encountered in a lipedema clinic. GPT-4 was tasked with conducting patient interviews to gather medical histories, presenting its findings, making preliminary diagnoses, and recommending further diagnostic and therapeutic actions. Advanced prompt engineering techniques were employed to refine the efficacy, relevance, and accuracy of GPT-4’s responses. A panel of experts in lipedema treatment, using a Likert Scale, evaluated GPT-4’s responses across six key criteria. Scoring ranged from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest), with GPT-4 achieving an average score of 4.24, indicating good reliability and applicability in a clinical setting. This study is one of the initial forays into applying large language models like GPT-4 in specific clinical scenarios, such as lipedema consultations. It demonstrates the potential of AI in supporting clinical practices and emphasizes the continuing importance of human expertise in the medical field, despite ongoing technological advancements.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and inflammation in humans and experimental models. For the human study, a retrospective cohort study was conducted with 206 participants; half were on antidepressants for major depressive disorder. The patients were divided into healthy and depressed groups. Inflammation was assessed based on the values of the main inflammatory biomarkers (CRP, WBC and ESR). For the animal experiments, 35 adult male Wistar rats were assigned to stressed and non-stressed groups. Inflammation and stress were induced using lipopolysaccharide and chronic unpredictable mild stress. A 10 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection of fluoxetine (FLX), a known antidepressant, was simultaneously administered daily for 4 weeks. Behavioral tests were performed. The plasma levels of inflammatory and stress biomarkers were measured and were significantly higher in the stressed and non-responsive groups in both studies. This study provides evidence of the link between inflammation and TRD. We further observed a possible link via the Phosphorylated Janus Kinase 2 and Phosphorylated Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (P-JAK2/P-STAT3) signaling pathway and found that chronic stress and high inflammation hinder the antidepressant effects of FLX. Thus, non-response to antidepressants could be mitigated by treating inflammation to improve the antidepressant effect in patients with TRD.

The increased awareness and concern over sustainable issues made it important for designers to adopt changes that occur over time to fulfill future customer requirements. Current works in this field do not deal with changes in customer requirements over time towards sustainable design. There is, however, a need to develop a new more flexible method that could integrate sustainable requirements into the sustainable design as well as forecast changes in customer requirements for sustainable design. The main contribution of this research is developing a new method. This method used dynamic quality function deployment for sustainability (dynamic QFDS) to model changes in customer requirements for sustainable design over time. The future forecasting shows how customers are becoming much more aware of sustainable requirements and it also proves that on a yearly basis, customer requirements are increasingly shifting towards sustainable design.

Sedimentary ancient DNA can indicate ecosystem-wide changes. Here, the authors show association between warm phases and high diatom abundance in the Antarctic Scotia Sea, in addition to presenting ancient eukaryote sedimentary DNA spanning the last approximately 1 million years.

Abstract Monitoring harvests and understanding hunters' perspectives are key for effective harvest management. Emperor goose (Anser canagicus) harvest in Alaska was recently re‐authorized after a 30‐year closure, but relatively small numbers of geese are available for a sustainable harvest. We characterized participation in the fall–winter hunting permit program, evaluated harvest monitoring, documented hunter's perspectives, and provided management recommendations. Participants in fall–winter bird hunting include rural, urban, Alaska Native, non‐Indigenous, subsistence, and sport (recreational) hunters, and these categories may overlap. In 2017–2019, 1367 permits were issued to urban Alaska residents (49%), rural residents (47%), and nonresidents (4%). Permit reporting documented take below the fall–winter federal quota. However, ancillary harvest surveys in rural Alaska suggested a substantially higher harvest. In a survey of 2017 and 2018 permit holders, most Alaska urban and nonresident respondents as well as more than half of rural respondents identified sport hunting as their primary motivation for obtaining a permit. These respondents often mentioned a taxidermy mount as a reason for obtaining a permit. About half of respondents motivated by subsistence hunting mentioned food as a reason. Finetuning harvest management include actions to increase participation by rural hunters in the fall–winter permit program, adjustments to boundaries of hunt areas so they are meaningful for hunters, and complementary harvest monitoring for all regulatory seasons.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Here we describe an IncQ1-like plasmid carrying blaKPC-2 in a new non-Tn4401 element found in Citrobacter werkmanii recovered from coastal water. Methods: In vitro and in silico approaches were used to assess antimicrobial resistance determinants, as well as blaKPC-2 vicinities. Results: The LB-887 isolate showed a multidrug-resistant phenotype and was identified as C. werkmanii. Resistome analysis identified further acquired resistance determinants to β-lactams, aminoglycosides, sulphonamides/trimethoprim, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, macrolides, rifampicin and fluoroquinolones. Plasmidome included incompatibility groups IncA, IncC2, IncR, Col and IncQ families. The blaKPC-2 was inserted on a new variant of NTEKPC-II, called here NTEKPC-IIe, carried by an InQ1-like plasmid of 7930 kb (pKPC-LB887). NTEKPC-IIe differed from NTEKPC-IId by the complete absence of ISKpn6-tnpA. The InQ1-like backbone harbouring this element had been described in Enterobacterales recovered from clinical and environmental settings. Conclusion: Unravelling genetic structures related to blaKPC dissemination in different settings may provide clues on the main forces driving evolution of this important resistance determinant. Indeed, the occurrence of blaKPC in a new NTEKPC variant from an environmental source highlights the ongoing evolution of this mobile genetic element. In addition, blaKPC carriage on a small and highly mobilizable IncQ plasmid in C. freundii complex from recreational water, similar to others found in clinical isolates, may suggest its relevance for blaKPC-2 dissemination among different compartments.

In recent decades, the fast development of smartphones has resulted in an enormous mass of e-waste besides a carbon footprint increase. In the face of serious environmental concerns, the manufacture and disposal of smartphones have become a primary customer concern. Environmental concerns are becoming a decisive factor when it comes to purchasing a product. Manufacturers have shifted their focus to product design with sustainable requirements in response to these new customer requirements. With all of the affordable technology manufacturers now may consider customer-sustainable requirements. This research aims to examine the relationship between traditional customer requirements, sustainable customer requirements, and sustainable purchase intention for smartphones in China, as well as the mediation effect of sustainable perceived value and the moderation effect of price sensitivity. Customers’ preferences are determined by using an online questionnaire. This research proposed an advanced sustainable purchase intention model by conducting an empirical analysis of the data gathered from 379 questionnaires. To gain a competitive advantage, companies should concentrate on meeting traditional and sustainable requirements more than the product price, according to the findings of the research. And contributes to the segmentation of the eco-friendly smartphone market.

A new high-resolution record for the Antarctic Zone shows persistent anti-phasing of high interglacial ocean productivity and high glacial dust deposition, suggesting a close inter-hemispheric coupling of cryosphere, ocean and atmosphere.

BackgroundWe tested whether a model identifying prostate cancer (PCa) patients at risk of pT3-4/pN1 can be developed for use during COVID19 pandemic, in order to guarantee appropriate treatment to patients harboring advanced disease patients without compromising sustainability of care delivery.MethodsWithin the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database 2010-2016, we identified 27,529 patients with localized PCa and treated with radical prostatectomy. A multivariable logistic regression model predicting presence of pT3-4/pN1 disease was fitted within a development cohort (n=13,977, 50.8%). Subsequently, external validation (n=13,552, 49.2%) and head-to-head comparison with NCCN risk group stratification was performed.ResultsIn model development, age, PSA, biopsy Gleason Grade Group (GGG) and percentage of positive biopsy cores were independent predictors of pT3-4/pN1 stage. In external validation, prediction of pT3-4/pN1 with novel nomogram was 74% accurate versus 68% for NCCN risk group stratification. Nomogram achieved better calibration and showed net-benefit over NCCN risk group stratification in decision curve analyses. The use of nomogram cut-off of 49% resulted in pT3-4/pN1 rate of 65%, instead of the average 35%.ConclusionThe newly developed, externally validated nomogram predicts presence of pT3-4/pN1 better than NCCN risk group stratification and allows to focus radical prostatectomy treatment on individuals at highest risk of pT3-4/pN1.

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) can support drug resistance surveillance, but is rare in low- and middle-income countries. Here, the authors integrate WGS within the national antimicrobial resistance surveillance program in the Philippines and conduct a retrospective sequencing survey to characterize bacterial populations and dissect resistance phenotypes.

Abstract Background Aortic stenosis (AS) causes left ventricular (LV) pressure overload, leading to adverse LV remodeling and dysfunction. Identifying early subclinical markers of LV dysfunction in patients with significant AS is critical as this could provide support for earlier intervention, which may result in improved long-term outcomes. We therefore examined the impact of severe AS and its consequent increase in LV afterload on myocardial deformation and rotational mechanics by 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) speckle-tracking echocardiography. Methods We prospectively measured various strain parameters in 168 patients (42% female, mean age 72 ± 12 years) with severe AS and LV ejection fraction (EF) ≥50%, and compared them to normal values found in literature. 2D and 3D images were analyzed for global longitudinal strain (GLS), global circumferential strain (GCS), global radial strain (GRS), basal rotation, apical rotation, and peak systolic twist. We further assessed the degree of concordance between 2D and 3D strain, and examined their association with measures of LV preload and afterload. Results Patients with severe AS exhibited significantly lower GLS and GRS but higher GCS, apical rotation, and twist by 2D and 3D echocardiography compared with published normal values (P = 0.003 for 3D twist, P

Thyroid hormone (TH) signaling plays critical roles during vertebrate development, including regulation of skeletal and cartilage growth. TH acts through its receptors (TRs), nuclear hormone receptors (NRs) that heterodimerize with Retinoid-X receptors (RXRs), to regulate gene expression. A defining difference between NR signaling during development compared to in adult tissues, is competence, the ability of the organism to respond to an endocrine signal. Amphibian metamorphosis, especially in Xenopus laevis, the African clawed frog, is a well-established in vivo model for studying the mechanisms of TH action during development. Previously, we’ve used one-week post-fertilization X. laevis tadpoles, which are only partially competent to TH, to show that in the tail, which is naturally refractive to exogenous T3 at this stage, RXR agonists increase TH competence, and that RXR antagonism inhibits the TH response. Here, we focused on the jaw that undergoes dramatic TH-mediated remodeling during metamorphosis in order to support new feeding and breathing styles. We used a battery of approaches in one-week-old tadpoles, including quantitative morphology, differential gene expression and whole mount cell proliferation assays, to show that both pharmacologic (bexarotene) and environmental (tributyltin) RXR agonists potentiated TH-induced responses but were inactive in the absence of TH; and the RXR antagonist UVI 3003 inhibited TH action. Bex and TBT significantly potentiated cellular proliferation and the TH induction of runx2, a transcription factor critical for developing cartilage and bone. Prominent targets of RXR-mediated TH potentiation were members of the matrix metalloprotease family, suggesting that RXR potentiation may emphasize pathways responsible for rapid changes during development.

In this work, a method using ATR-FT-MIR and iPLS was developed to quantify whey protein supplement adulteration with rice flour. The original vanilla flavor commercial whey protein samples were adulterated with commercial rice flour with concentrations between 11.49% to 29.14% (w/w). After the adulteration, the ATR-FT-MIR spectra were obtained with no additional preparation procedure. The iPLS model analysis was performed using RStudio software with the mdatools package. The RMSEC was 1.26, the R2= 0.954 and the cross-validation error (RMSECV) was 3.31. The prediction error (RMSEP) for the validation set was equal 3.48 and the validation R2 was 0.610. These parameters, associated with the fact that the method does not require sample preparation, demonstrate the procedure viability as a tool to quantify adulterations of whey protein with rice flour.

TMEM16K is a member of the TMEM16 family of integral membrane proteins that are either lipid scramblases or chloride channels. Here the authors combine cell biology, electrophysiology measurements, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and MD simulations to structurally characterize TMEM16K and show that it is an ER-resident lipid scramblase.

Background: Antimalarial antibody measurements are useful because they reflect historical and recent exposure to malaria. As such, they may provide additional information to assess ongoing transmission in low endemic or pre-elimination settings where cases are rare. In addition, the absence of antibody responses in certain individuals can indicate the cessation of transmission. Commercial malaria enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) detect antimalarial antibodies and are commonly used to screen blood donations for possible malaria infection. However, there is no standardized test to detect antimalarial antibodies for epidemiological use. Here we compared five commercially available ELISA kits (Trinity Biotech, newbio, DiaPro, Cellabs, and NovaTec) in search of a standardized tool for supporting claims of absence of malaria transmission. For comparison, a research-based (RB) ELISA protocol was performed alongside the commercial kits.Results: The commercial kits were first compared using serum samples from known malaria-unexposed individuals (n = 223) and Toxoplasma-infected individuals (n = 191) to assess specificity and cross-reactivity against non-malaria infections. In addition, 134 samples from ≥10-year-olds collected in a hyperendemic region in the Gambia in the early 1990s were used to assess sensitivity. Three out of five kits showed high sensitivity (90–92%), high specificity (98–99%), low cross-reactivity (0–3%) and were considered user-friendly (Trinity Biotech, newbio and NovaTec). Two of these kits (Trinity Biotech and NovaTec) were taken forward for epidemiological evaluation and results were compared to those using the RB-ELISA. Samples from two pre-elimination settings (Praia, Cape Verde; n = 1,396, and Bataan, the Philippines; n = 1,824) were tested. Serological results from both the Trinity Biotech kit and the RB-ELISA concurred with recent passively detected case counts in both settings. Results from the Trinity Biotech kit reflected a significant decrease in the number of reported cases in Bataan in the 1990s better than the RB-ELISA. Results from the NovaTec kit did not reflect transmission patterns in either setting.Conclusion: The Trinity Biotech commercial ELISA kit was considered reliable for epidemiological use and accurately described transmission patterns in two (previously) malaria endemic settings. The use of this simple and standardized serological tool may aid national control and elimination programs by confirming that regions are free from malaria.

Many vector-borne diseases circulate in the Republic of Cabo Verde. These include malaria during the colonization of the archipelago by the Portuguese explorers and several arboviruses such as yellow fever (now eradicated), dengue and zika. To control these vector-borne diseases, an integrated vector control program was implemented. The main targeted mosquito vectors are Aedes aegypti and Anopheles arabiensis, and in a lesser extent the potential arbovirus vector Culex pipiens s.l. The main control strategy is focused on mosquito aquatic stages using diesel oil and Temephos. This latter has been applied in Cabo Verde since 1979. Its continuous use was followed by the emergence of resistance in mosquito populations. We investigated the current susceptibility to Temephos of the three potential mosquito vectors of Cabo Verde through bioassays tests. Our results showed various degrees of susceptibility with 24h post-exposure mortality rates ranging from 43.1% to 90.9% using WHO diagnostic doses. A full susceptibility was however observed with Bacillus thurigiensis var israelensis with mortality rates from 99.6% to 100%.

Healing of large bone defects remains a challenge in reconstructive surgery, especially with impaired healing potential due to severe trauma, infection or irradiation. In vivo studies are often performed in healthy animals, which might not accurately reflect the situation in clinical cases. In the present study, we successfully combined a critical-sized femoral defect model with an ionizing radiation protocol in rats. To support bone healing, tissue-engineered constructs were transferred into the defect after ectopic preossification and prevascularization. The combination of SiHA, MSCs and BMP-2 resulted in the significant ectopic formation of bone tissue, which can easily be transferred by means of our custom-made titanium chamber. Implanted osteogenic MSCs survived in vivo for a total of 18 weeks. The use of SiHA alone did not lead to bone formation after ectopic implantation. Analysis of gene expression showed early osteoblast differentiation and a hypoxic and inflammatory environment in implanted constructs. Irradiation led to impaired bone healing, decreased vascularization and lower short-term survival of implanted cells. We conclude that our model is highly valuable for the investigation of bone healing and tissue engineering in pre-damaged tissue and that healing of bone defects can be substantially supported by combining SiHA, MSCs and BMP-2.

Per a fer-ho m’he basat en el treball etnogràfic entorn del cicle expositiu en què s’emmarca el projecte i he partit d’una perspectiva d’acostament al projecte artístic com a entitat complexa i construïda per relacions macro i micro, més o menys duradores i més fàcilment o més difícilment observables.

Depression is a psychiatric disorder and major contributor to the burden of disease worldwide. The strength of evidence of the benefits of exercise as a therapeutic intervention for patients with depression has expanded in the last 30 years. In fact, the available evidence indicates exercise can not only help manage depressive symptoms, but also effect significant improvements in other health outcomes. Clinical guidelines including such recommendations have been issued by different agencies, namely the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). With increasing recognition of the benefits of exercise and shortcomings of healthcare systems, other countries, such as Sweden and Canada, have included exercise in their national guidelines for treating depression. Unfortunately, progress in incorporating exercise guidelines into clinical practice has been slow, and Portugal and Brazil reflect this reality. In this update, we reemphasize the importance of bridging this gap and integrating exercise into clinical practice guidelines as an essential component of depression treatment.

O estudo das características e das possibilidades de utilização de Resíduo Sólido Urbano (R.S.U.) e mais especificamente de Resíduo Sólido Orgânico Urbano (R.S.O.U.), no Brasil e no Mundo, ainda não produziu informações que possibilitem conhecimentos suficientes para tomadas de decisões que estão sendo exigidas, em razão do crescente volume de resíduos produzidos e os impactos ao meio ambiente. Este trabalho teve o objetivo de estudar o efeito da irrigação associada ao uso de R.S.O.U. para formação de mudas de eucalipto. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida na UNESP, Câmpus de Jaboticabal - SP, sendo adotado como delineamento estatístico o esquema fatorial inteiramente casualizado. Foram utilizados 11 substratos: dois tipos de solos (um Latossolo Vermelho eutrófico e um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico), com e sem adubação química, seis misturas de solo e R.S.O.U., e um utilizando somente R.S.O.U. Sementes de eucalipto var. Citriodora Hooker foram semeadas diretamente em topetes e irrigadas com base em dois métodos de quantificação da água evapotranspirada (tanque Classe A e determinação da massa), em quatro níveis (50; 70; 100 e 130% da evapotranspiração). Os dados coletados e analisados estatisticamente demonstraram que doses acima de 20% de R.S.O.U. na mistura, em solos destinados à produção de mudas de eucalipto, causam efeitos negativos na sobrevivência das plantas.Studies of the characteristics and possibilities of utilization the of Urban Solid Residue (U.S.R.) and specifically Urban Organic Solid Residue (U.O.S.R.) have not yet produced information in Brazil and in the world that permits sufficient knowledge for taking necessary decisions for immediate solutions that are demanded due to the increasing volume of residue produced. This work has as objective to study the effects of irrigation associated with the use of U.O.S.R. for growing eucalyptus seedlings. This research was developed at the São Paulo State University - UNESP - Jaboticabal, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The statistical design was a randomized in a factorial array. Eleven substrata were formulated using two types of soil, a EUTRUSTOX and a HAPLUSTOX, with and without chemical fertilization, six mixtures among soils and Urban Organic Solid Residue (U.O.S.R.), and pure U.O.S.R. Citriodora Hooker eucalyptus seeds were used in direct seeding in blocks of soil using two kinds of calculation of water quantity to be applied in the irrigation, through class A tank methods and weighing the substrata, in four levels (50%; 70%; 100% and 130% of evapotranspiration). The collected and statistically analyzed data showed that mixtures of 20% or more of U.O.S.R presented a harmful effect on plant development in soils for the production of eucalyptus seedlings by direct seeding.

O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido em área do Horto Ouro Verde, de propriedade da International Paper do Brasil, localizado no município de Conchal - SP, tendo por objetivo monitorar algumas variáveis de qualidade da água em duas condições do uso do solo (mata nativa e eucalipto). Para tanto, coletou-se água mensalmente em seis pontos ao longo do curso d'água, de maneira representativa dos diferentes usos do solo. As variáveis analisadas foram temperatura (T), oxigênio dissolvido (OD), matéria orgânica (MO) e potencial hidrogeniônico (pH). Foram encontradas diferenças significativas na matéria orgânica para os pontos P3 (mata nativa) e P6 (eucalipto), e no oxigênio dissolvido para os pontos P1 (mata nativa) e P6 (eucalipto), e quando comparadas às médias do somatório dos efeitos em cada tipo de manejo do solo, não houve diferenças significativas para todas as variáveis estudadas.This work was carried out at the Brazil's International Paper Property - Ouro Verde Garden - Conchal - SP, aiming to monitor some variables of water qualities in two soil conditions (native forest and eucalyptus). Thus, monthly, water was collected at six points throughout the water course in order to represent the different soil occupations. The analyzed variables were: temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), organic matter (OM) and hydrogenic potential (pH). Significative differences were found among the means of OM to the P3 point (native forest) and P6 (eucalyptus) and to DO of P1 point (native forest) and P6 (eucalyptus). When the sum of the effect in each soil conditions was compared no significant differences were observed for all studied variables.

O presente trabalho foi realizado em área demonstrativa de irrigação do Departamento de Engenharia Rural da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, da Universidade Estadual Paulista (FCAV/UNESP), Jaboticabal - SP, tendo como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da deficiência hídrica no desenvolvimento da planta, na produção e na qualidade fisiológica de sementes da cultura do milho (Zea mays L.). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com os tratamentos em esquema fatorial 2 x 3, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram da utilização de sementes de milho híbrido BR201 e DINA-70, com três períodos de irrigação: 1) durante todo o ciclo; 2) após o período vegetativo (após a emissão da 12ª folha), e 3) até 20 dias após o florescimento (antes do período de enchimento dos grãos). Concluiu-se que a deficiência hídrica durante o período vegetativo (irrigação após a emissão da 12ª folha) foi a mais prejudicial à cultura e à produção; essa deficiência hídrica não afetou a qualidade fisiológica das sementes produzidas, e o híbrido DINA-70 apresentou melhores resultados para os parâmetros fisiológicos e de produção que o híbrido BR201.The experiment was conducted at the experimental area of the Rural Engineering Department of the Faculdade de Ciências Arárias e Veterinárias, Câmpus de Jaboticabal, Universidade Estadual Paulista (FCAV/UNESP), Brazil. The aim of this work was to verify the effect of the water deficit on maize (Zea mays L.) crop during vegetative growth, in its production and physiological seed quality. A completely randomized statistical design with four replications, in a 3 x 2 factorial array was used. The treatments consisted of three irrigation periods (during maize growth; after the emission of the 12th leaf, and 20 days after flowering time), using cross hybrids seedling BR201 and DINA-70. Results indicated that the water deficit on the vegetative growth (irrigation only after the emission of the 12th leaf) was the most harmful to maize plants and their production; the water deficit didn't affect the physiological seed quality. The physiological and production parameters were better in the cross hybrid DINA70 than in the hybrid BR201.

To study the relationship between glycosylated hemoglobin (HgbA1c) and myocardial perfusion in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, we prospectively enrolled 24 patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) who underwent adenosine stress by real-time myocardial perfusion echocardiography (RTMPE). HgbA1c was measured at time of RTMPE. Microbubble velocity (β min−1), myocardial blood flow (MBF, mL/min/g), and myocardial blood flow reserve (MBFR) were quantified. Quantitative MCE analysis was feasible in all patients (272/384 segments, 71%). Those with HgbA1c > 7.1% had significantly lower βreserve and MBFR than those with HgbA1c ≤ 7.1% (P 2 as normal, HgbA1c > 7.1% significantly increased the risk for abnormal MBFR, (adjusted odds ratio: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.12–3.35, P=0.02). Optimal glycemic control is associated with preservation of MBFR as determined by RTMPE, in T2DM patients at risk for CAD.

Ice loss in the Southern Hemisphere has been greatest over the past 30 years in West Antarctica. The high sensitivity of this region to climate change has motivated geologists to examine marine sedimentary records for evidence of past episodes of West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) instability. Sediments accumulating in the Scotia Sea are useful to examine for this purpose because they receive iceberg-rafted debris (IBRD) sourced from the Pacific- and Atlantic-facing sectors of West Antarctica. Here we report on the sedimentology and provenance of the oldest of three cm-scale coarse-grained layers recovered from this sea at International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1538. These layers are preserved in opal-rich sediments deposited ∼1.2 Ma during a relatively warm regional climate. Our microCT-based analysis of the layer's in-situ fabric confirms its ice-rafted origin. We further infer that it is the product of an intense but short-lived episode of IBRD deposition. Based on the petrography of its sand fraction and the Phanerozoic 40Ar/39Ar ages of hornblende and mica it contains, we conclude that the IBRD it contains was likely sourced from the Weddell Sea and/or Amundsen Sea embayment(s) of West Antarctica. We attribute the high concentrations of IBRD in these layers to "dirty" icebergs calved from the WAIS following its retreat inland from its modern grounding line. These layers also sit at the top of a ∼366-m thick Pliocene and early Pleistocene sequence that is much more dropstone-rich than its overlying sediments. We speculate this fact may reflect that WAIS mass-balance was highly dynamic during the ∼41-kyr (inter)glacial world.
