Abstract: A comprehensive set of azimuthal single-spin and double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive leptoproduction of pions, charged kaons, protons, and antiprotons from transversely polarized protons is presented. These asymmetries include the previously published HERMES results on Collins and Sivers asymmetries, the analysis of which has been extended to include protons and antiprotons and also to an extraction in a three-dimensional kinematic binning and enlarged phase space. They are complemented by corresponding results for the remaining four single-spin and four double-spin asymmetries allowed in the one-photon-exchange approximation of the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering process for target-polarization orientation perpendicular to the direction of the incoming lepton beam. Among those results, significant non-vanishing $\cos{\phi-\phi_S}$ modulations provide evidence for a sizable worm-gear (II) distribution, $g_{1T}$. Most of the other modulations are found to be consistent with zero with the notable exception of large $\sin{\phi_S}$ modulations for charged pions and positive kaons.

Abstract: A measurement of beam-helicity asymmetries for single-hadron production in deep-inelastic scattering is presented. Data from the scattering of 27.6 GeV electrons and positrons off gaseous hydrogen and deuterium targets were collected by the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries are presented separately as a function of the Bjorken scaling variable, the hadron transverse momentum, and the fractional energy for charged pions and kaons as well as for protons and anti-protons. These asymmetries are also presented as a function of the three aforementioned kinematic variables simultaneously.

Abstract: A comprehensive collection of results on longitudinal double-spin asymmetries is presented for charged pions and kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons on the proton and deuteron, based on the full HERMES data set. The dependence of the asymmetries on hadron transverse momentum and azimuthal angle extends the sensitivity to the flavor structure of the nucleon beyond the distribution functions accessible in the collinear framework. No strong dependence on those variables is observed. In addition, the hadron charge-difference asymmetry is presented, which under certain model assumptions provides access to the helicity distributions of valence quarks.

4. Validity of the distorted-wave impulse-approximation description of ${}^{40}$Ca$(e,e'p)^{39}$K data using only ingredients from a nonlocal dispersive optical model

Abstract: The nonlocal implementation of the dispersive optical model (DOM) provides all the ingredients for distorted-wave impulse-approximation (DWIA) calculations of the $(e,e'p)$ reaction. It provides both the overlap function, including its normalization, and the outgoing proton distorted wave. This framework is applied to describe the knockout of a proton from the $0\textrm{d}\frac{3}{2}$ and $1\textrm{s}\frac{1}{2}$ orbitals in ${}^{40}$Ca with fixed normalizations of 0.71 and 0.60, respectively. Data were obtained in parallel kinematics for three outgoing proton energies: 70, 100, and 135 MeV. Agreement with the data is as good as, or better than, previous descriptions employing local optical potentials and overlap functions from Woods-Saxon potentials - both with standard nonlocality corrections - whose normalization (spectroscopic factor) and radius were fitted to the data. The present analysis suggests that slightly larger spectroscopic factors are obtained when nonlocal optical potentials are employed than those generated with local potentials. The results further suggest that the chosen kinematical window around 100 MeV proton energy provides the best and cleanest method to employ the DWIA for the analysis of this reaction. The conclusion that substantial ground-state correlations cannot be ignored when describing a closed-shell atomic nucleus is therefore confirmed in detail. To reach these conclusions, it is essential to have a complete description of the nucleon single-particle propagator that accounts for all elastic nucleon-scattering observables in a wide energy domain up to 200 MeV. Abstract: Hard exclusive electroproduction of $\omega$ mesons is studied with the HERMES spectrometer at the DESY laboratory by scattering 27.6 GeV positron and electron beams off a transversely polarized hydrogen target. The amplitudes of five azimuthal modulations of the single-spin asymmetry of the cross section with respect to the transverse proton polarization are measured. They are determined in the entire kinematic region as well as for two bins in photon virtuality and momentum transfer to the nucleon. Also, a separation of asymmetry amplitudes into longitudinal and transverse components is done. These results are compared to a phenomenological model that includes the pion pole contribution. Abstract: Bose-Einstein correlations of like-sign charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic electron and positron scattering are studied in the HERMES experiment using nuclear targets of $^1$H, $^2$H, $^3$He, $^4$He, N, Ne, Kr, and Xe. A Gaussian approach is used to parametrize a two-particle correlation function determined from events with at least two charged hadrons of the same sign charge. This correlation function is compared to two different empirical distributions that do not include the Bose-Einstein correlations. One distribution is derived from unlike-sign hadron pairs, and the second is derived from mixing like-sign pairs from different events. The extraction procedure used simulations incorporating the experimental setup in order to correct the results for spectrometer acceptance effects, and was tested using the distribution of unlike-sign hadron pairs. Clear signals of Bose-Einstein correlations for all target nuclei without a significant variation with the nuclear target mass are found. Also, no evidence for a dependence on the invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system is found when the results are compared to those of previous experiments.

Abstract: The earlier search at HERMES for narrow baryon states excited in quasi-real photoproduction, decaying through the channel $pK_S^0\rightarrow p\pi^+\pi^-$, has been extended with improved decay-particle reconstruction, more advanced particle identification, and increased event samples. The structure observed earlier at an invariant mass of 1528 MeV shifts to 1522 MeV and the statistical significance drops to about 2$\sigma$ for data taken with a deuterium target. The number of events above background is $68_{-31}^{+98}\text{(stat)}\pm13\text{(sys)}$. No such structure is observed in the hydrogen data set.

Abstract: Exclusive electroproduction of $\omega$ mesons on unpolarized hydrogen and deuterium targets is studied in the kinematic region of Q$^2$>1.0 GeV$^2$, 3.0 GeV < W < 6.3 GeV, and -t'< 0.2 GeV$^2$. Results on the angular distribution of the $\omega$ meson, including its decay products, are presented. The data were accumulated with the HERMES forward spectrometer during the 1996-2007 running period using the 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron or positron beam of HERA. The determination of the virtual-photon longitudinal-to-transverse cross-section ratio reveals that a considerable part of the cross section arises from transversely polarized photons. Spin density matrix elements are presented in projections of Q$^2$ or -t'. Violation of s-channel helicity conservation is observed for some of these elements. A sizable contribution from unnatural-parity-exchange amplitudes is found and the phase shift between those amplitudes that describe transverse $\omega$ production by longitudinal and transverse virtual photons, $\gamma^{*}_{L} \to \omega_{T}$ and $\gamma^{*}_{T} \to \omega_{T}$, is determined for the first time. A hierarchy of helicity amplitudes is established, which mainly means that the unnatural-parity-exchange amplitude describing the $\gamma^*_T \to \omega_T$ transition dominates over the two natural-parity-exchange amplitudes describing the $\gamma^*_L \to \omega_L$ and $\gamma^*_T \to \omega_T$ transitions, with the latter two being of similar magnitude. Abstract: The transverse polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons was measured in inclusive quasireal photoproduction for various target nuclei ranging from hydrogen to xenon. The data were obtained by the HERMES experiment at HERA using the 27.6 GeV lepton beam and nuclear gas targets internal to the lepton storage ring. Abstract: An earlier extraction from the HERMES experiment of the polarization-averaged parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon has been reevaluated using final data on the multiplicities of charged kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering obtained with a kinematically more comprehensive method of correcting for experimental effects. General features of the distribution are confirmed, but the rise at low x is less pronounced than previously reported.

Abstract: Single-spin asymmetries were investigated in inclusive electroproduction of charged pions and kaons from transversely polarized protons at the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries were studied as a function of the azimuthal angle $\psi$ about the beam direction between the target-spin direction and the hadron production plane, the transverse hadron momentum relative to the direction of the incident beam, and the Feynman variable $x_F$. The $\sin(\psi)$ amplitudes are positive for positive pions and kaons, slightly negative for negative pions and consistent with zero for negative kaons, with particular transverse-momentum but weak $x_F$ dependences. Especially large asymmetries are observed for two small subsamples of events, where also the scattered electron was recorded by the spectrometer., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering are presented for each charge state of \pi^\pm and K^\pm mesons. The data were collected by the HERMES experiment at the HERA storage ring using 27.6 GeV electron and positron beams incident on a hydrogen or deuterium gas target. The results are presented as a function of the kinematic quantities x_B, Q^2, z, and P_h\perp. They represent a unique data set for identified hadrons that will significantly enhance our understanding of the fragmentation of quarks into final-state hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering.

Abstract: The beam-helicity asymmetry in exclusive electroproduction of real photons by the longitudinally polarized HERA positron beam scattering off an unpolarized hydrogen target is measured at HERMES. The asymmetry arises from deeply virtual Compton scattering and its interference with the Bethe--Heitler process. Azimuthal amplitudes of the beam-helicity asymmetry are extracted from a data sample consisting of $ep\rightarrow ep\gamma$ events with detection of all particles in the final state including the recoiling proton. The installation of a recoil detector, while reducing the acceptance of the experiment, allows the elimination of background from $ep\rightarrow eN\pi\gamma$ events, which was estimated to contribute an average of about 12% to the signal in previous HERMES publications. The removal of this background from the present data sample is shown to increase the magnitude of the leading asymmetry amplitude by 0.054 +/- 0.016 to -0.328 +/- 0.027 (stat.) +/- 0.045 (syst.).

Abstract: The azimuthal cos{\phi} and cos2{\phi} modulations of the distribution of hadrons produced in unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons off hydrogen and deuterium targets have been measured in the HERMES experiment. For the first time these modulations were determined in a four-dimensional kinematic space for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons separately, as well as for unidentified hadrons. These azimuthal dependences are sensitive to the transverse motion and polarization of the quarks within the nucleon via, e.g., the Cahn, Boer-Mulders and Collins effects.

Abstract: Beam-helicity and beam-charge asymmetries in the hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from an unpolarised hydrogen target by a 27.6 GeV lepton beam are extracted from the HERMES data set of 2006-2007 using a missing-mass event selection technique. The asymmetry amplitudes extracted from this data set are more precise than those extracted from the earlier data set of 1996-2005 previously analysed in the same manner by HERMES. The results from the two data sets are compatible with each other. Results from these combined data sets are extracted and constitute the most precise asymmetry amplitude measurements made in the HERMES kinematic region using a missing-mass event selection technique., Comment: (minor changes only compared to arXiv version 1)

Abstract: A measurement of the virtual-photon asymmetry A_2(x,Q^2) and of the spin-structure function g_2(x,Q^2) of the proton are presented for the kinematic range 0.004 < x < 0.9 and 0.18 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 20 GeV^2. The data were collected by the HERMES experiment at the HERA storage ring at DESY while studying inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized leptons off a transversely polarized hydrogen gas target. The results are consistent with previous experimental data from CERN and SLAC. For the x-range covered, the measured integral of g_2(x) converges to the null result of the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule. The x^2 moment of the twist-3 contribution to g_2(x) is found to be compatible with zero.

Abstract: Hadron multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering were measured on neon, krypton and xenon targets relative to deuterium at an electron(positron)-beam energy of 27.6 GeV at HERMES. These ratios were determined as a function of the virtual-photon energy nu, its virtuality Q2, the fractional hadron energy z and the transverse hadron momentum with respect to the virtual-photon direction pt . Dependences were analysed separately for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons as well as protons and antiprotons in a two-dimensional representation. Compared to the one-dimensional dependences, some new features were observed. In particular, when z > 0.4 positive kaons do not show the strong monotonic rise of the multiplicity ratio with nu as exhibited by pions and negative kaons. Protons were found to behave very differently from the other hadrons.

Abstract: Double-spin asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of real photons from a transversely polarized hydrogen target are measured with respect to the product of target polarization with beam helicity and beam charge, and with respect to the product of target polarization with beam helicity alone. The asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering process and its interference with the Bethe--Heitler process. They are related to the real part of the same combination of Compton form factors as that determining the previously published transverse target single-spin asymmetries through the imaginary part. The results for the double-spin asymmetries are found to be compatible with zero within the uncertainties of the measurement, and are not incompatible with the predictions of the only available GPD-based calculation., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, and 3 tables

Abstract: Results of inclusive measurements of inelastic electron and positron scattering from unpolarized protons and deuterons at the HERMES experiment are presented. The structure functions $F_2^p$ and $F_2^d$ are determined using a parameterization of existing data for the longitudinal-to-transverse virtual-photon absorption cross-section ratio. The HERMES results provide data in the ranges $0.006\leq x\leq 0.9$ and 0.1 GeV$^2\leq Q^2\leq$ 20 GeV$^2$, covering the transition region between the perturbative and the non-perturbative regimes of QCD in a so-far largely unexplored kinematic region. They are in agreement with existing world data in the region of overlap. The measured cross sections are used, in combination with data from other experiments, to perform fits to the photon-nucleon cross section using the functional form of the ALLM model. Abstract: Exclusive rho^0-meson electroproduction is studied in the HERMES experiment, using a 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron/positron beam and unpolarized hydrogen and deuterium targets in the kinematic region 0.5 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 7.0 GeV^2, 3.0 GeV < W < 6.3 GeV, and -t' < 0.4 GeV^2. Real and imaginary parts of the ratios of the natural-parity-exchange helicity amplitudes T_{11} (\gamma^*_T --> \rho_T), T_{01} (\gamma^*_T --> \rho_L), T_{10} (\gamma^*_L --> \rho_T), and T_{1-1} (\gamma^*_{-T} -->\rho_T) to T_{00} (\gamma^*_L --> \rho_L) are extracted from the data. For the unnatural-parity-exchange amplitude U_{11}, the ratio |U_{11}/T_{00}| is obtained. Abstract: Azimuthal asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of a real photon from a longitudinally polarized deuterium target are measured with respect to target polarization alone and with respect to target polarization combined with beam helicity and/or beam charge. The asymmetries appear in the distribution of the real photons in the azimuthal angle $\phi$ around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering process and its interference with the Bethe-Heitler process. The results for the beam-charge and beam-helicity asymmetries from a tensor polarized deuterium target with vanishing vector polarization are shown to be compatible with those from an unpolarized deuterium target, which is expected for incoherent scattering dominant at larger momentum transfer. Furthermore, the results for the single target-spin asymmetry and for the double-spin asymmetry are found to be compatible with the corresponding asymmetries previously measured on a hydrogen target. For coherent scattering on the deuteron at small momentum transfer to the target, these findings imply that the tensor contribution to the cross section is small. Abstract: Single-spin asymmetries for pions and charged kaons are measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of positrons and electrons off a transversely nuclear-polarized hydrogen target. The dependence of the cross section on the azimuthal angles of the target polarization (phi_S)and the produced hadron (phi) is found to have a substantial sin(phi+phi_S) modulation for the production of pi+, pi- and K+. This Fourier component can be interpreted in terms of non-zero transversity distribution functions and non-zero favored and disfavored Collins fragmentation functions with opposite sign. Abstract: Polarisation asymmetries are measured for the hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from a longitudinally polarised hydrogen target. These asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes. From the data are extracted two asymmetries in the azimuthal distribution of produced real photons about the direction of the exchanged virtual photon: A_UL with respect to the target polarisation and A_LL with respect to the product of the beam and target polarisations. Results for both asymmetries are compared to the predictions from a generalised parton distribution model. The sin(phi) and cos(0*phi) amplitudes observed respectively for the A_UL and A_LL asymmetries are compatible with the sizeable predictions from the model. Abstract: Measurements of the proton and deuteron $F_2$ structure functions are presented. The data, taken at Jefferson Lab Hall C, span the four-momentum transfer range $0.06 < Q^2 < 2.8$ GeV$^2$, and Bjorken $x$ values from 0.009 to 0.45, thus extending the knowledge of $F_2$ to low values of $Q^2$ at low $x$. Next-to-next-to-leading order calculations using recent parton distribution functions start to deviate from the data for $Q^2<2$ GeV$^2$ at the low and high $x$-values. Down to the lowest value of $Q^2$, the structure function is in good agreement with a parameterization of $F_2$ based on data that have been taken at much higher values of $Q^2$ or much lower values of $x$, and which is constrained by data at the photon point. Abstract: We investigate the origin of the strength at large missing energies in electron-induced proton knockout reactions. For that purpose the reaction 16O(e,e'p) was studied at a central value omega=210 MeV of the energy transfer, and two values of the momentum transfer: q=300, 400 MeV/c, corresponding to the "dip region". Differential cross sections were determined in a large range of missing energy (Em=0-140 MeV) and proton emission angle (gamma_pq =0-110 deg), and compared to predictions of a model that includes nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations and two-body currents. Abstract: This paper reports on the first measurement of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction. Data were measured in kinematics centred on a super-parallel geometry at energy and momentum transfers of 215 MeV and 316 MeV/c. The experimental resolution was sufficient to distinguish groups of states in the residual nucleus but not good enough to separate individual states. The data show a strong dependence on missing momentum and this dependence appears to be different for two groups of states in the residual nucleus. Abstract: The contribution of rescattering to final state interactions in (e,e'p) cross sections is studied for medium and high missing energies using a semiclassical model. This approach considers two-step processes that lead to the emission of both nucleons. The effects of nuclear transparency are accounted for in a Glauber inspired approach and the dispersion effects of the medium at low energies are included. It is found that rescattering is strongly reduced in parallel kinematics. At high missing energy and momenta, the distortion of the short-range correlated tail of the spectral function is dominated by a rearrangement of that strength itself. In perpendicular kinematics, a further enhancement of the experimental yield is due to strength that is originally in the mean field region. Abstract: The cross section for the $^3$He(e, e$'$d)p reaction has been measured as a function of the missing momentum $p_m$ in q$\omega$ -constant kinematics at beam energies of 370 and 576 MeV for values of the three-momentum transfer $q$ of 412, 504 and 604 \mevc. The L(+TT), T and LT structure functions have been separated for $q$ = 412 and 504 \mevc. The data are compared to three-body Faddeev calculations, including meson-exchange currents (MEC), and to calculations based on a covariant diagrammatic expansion. The influence of final-state interactions and meson-exchange currents is discussed. The $p_m$-dependence of the data is reasonably well described by all calculations. However, the most advanced Faddeev calculations, which employ the AV18 nucleon-nucleon interaction and include MEC, overestimate the measured cross sections, especially the longitudinal part, and at the larger values of $q$. The diagrammatic approach gives a fair description of the cross section, but under(over)estimates the longitudinal (transverse) structure function., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: Cross sections for the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction were measured over a wide range of energy and three- momentum transfer. At a momentum transfer q=375 MeV/c, data were taken at transferred energies omega ranging from 170 to 290 MeV. At omega=220 MeV, measurements were performed at three q values (305, 375, and 445 MeV/c). The results are presented as a function of the neutron momentum in the final-state, as a function of the energy and momentum transfer, and as a function of the relative momentum of the two-proton system. The data at neutron momenta below 100 MeV/c, obtained for two values of the momentum transfer at omega=220 MeV, are well described by the results of continuum-Faddeev calculations. These calculations indicate that the cross section in this domain is dominated by direct two-proton emission induced by a one-body hadronic current. Cross section distributions determined as a function of the relative momentum of the two protons are fairly well reproduced by continuum-Faddeev calculations based on various realistic nucleon-nucleon potential models. At higher neutron momentum and at higher energy transfer, deviations between data and calculations are observed that may be due to contributions of isobar currents., Comment: 14 pages, 1 table, 17 figures

Abstract: We present measurements of mechanical vibrations induced by 0.6 GeV electrons impinging on cylindrical and spherical aluminium resonators. To monitor the amplitude of the resonator's vibrational modes we used piezoelectric ceramic sensors, calibrated by standard accelerometers. Calculations using the thermo-acoustic conversion model, agree well with the experimental data, as demonstrated by the specific variation of the excitation strengths with the absorbed energy, and with the traversing particles' track positions. For the first longitudinal mode of the cylindrical resonator we measured a conversion factor of 7.4 +- 1.4 nm/J, confirming the model value of 10 nm/J. Also, for the spherical resonator, we found the model values for the L=2 and L=1 mode amplitudes to be consistent with our measurement. We thus have confirmed the applicability of the model, and we note that calculations based on the model have shown that next generation resonant mass gravitational wave detectors can only be expected to reach their intended ultra high sensitivity if they will be shielded by an appreciable amount of rock, where a veto detector can reduce the background of remaining impinging cosmic rays effectively., Comment: Tex-Article with epsfile, 34 pages including 13 figures and 5 tables. Abstract: Cross sections for the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction were measured at an energy transfer of 220 MeV and three-momentum transfers q of 305, 375, and 445 MeV/c. Results are presented as a function of q and the final-state neutron momentum for slices in specific kinematic variables. 39. The Transparency of 12C for Protons

Abstract: Existing cross-section data for 1p-shell knockout in the reaction 12C(e,e'p) - as obtained under different kinematic conditions - are shown to be mutually consistent, apart from a recent measurement performed in Mainz. New data have been collected at the Amsterdam Pulse Stretcher that confirm the normalization of the older measurements. An analysis of the world's 12C(e,e'p) data has yielded precise values of the spectroscopic factor for 1p-shell and 1s-shell knockout from 12C. These values have been used to evaluate the transparency of the 12C nucleus for 1p-shell and 1s-shell protons separately on the basis of recent high-energy 12C(e,e'p) data taken at a four-momentum transfer squared of 1.1 GeV/c^2. As the resulting average value of the nuclear transparency, 0.81(0.04), is considerably higher than the value obtained from previous analyses and theoretical estimates, the high Q^2 data were used instead for an independent determination of the spectroscopic strength for 1p + 1s knockout. Combining these results with the low Q^2 data the spectroscopic factors appear to be momentum-transfer dependent. Possible explanations of these surprising results in terms of reaction-mechanism effects or a possible breakdown of the quasi-particle concept at high Q^2 are discussed as well., Comment: 11 pages 8 figures

40. Nuclear structure studies with the 7Li(e,e'p) reaction

Abstract: Experimental momentum distributions for the transitions to the ground state and first excited state of 6He have been measured via the reaction 7Li(e,e'p)6He, in the missing momentum range from -70 to 260 MeV/c. They are compared to theoretical distributions calculated with mean-field wave functions and with variational Monte Carlo (VMC) wave functions which include strong state-dependent correlations in both 7Li and 6He. These VMC calculations provide a parameter-free prediction of the momentum distribution that reproduces the measured data, including its normalization. The deduced summed spectroscopic factor for the two transitions is 0.58 +/- 0.05, in perfect agreement with the VMC value of 0.60. This is the first successful comparison of experiment and ab initio theory for spectroscopic factors in p-shell nuclei., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: A measurement of beam-helicity asymmetries for single-hadron production in deep-inelastic scattering is presented. Data from the scattering of 27.6 GeV electrons and positrons off gaseous hydrogen and deuterium targets were collected by the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries are presented separately as a function of the Bjorken scaling variable, the hadron transverse momentum and the fractional energy for charged pions and kaons as well as for protons and anti-protons. These asymmetries are also presented as a function of the three aforementioned kinematic variables simultaneously.

Abstract: Exclusive rho(0)-meson electroproduction is studied by the HERMES experiment, using the 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron/positron beam of HERA and a transversely polarized hydrogen target, in the kinematic region 1.0 GeV2 < Q(2) < 7.0GeV(2), 3.0GeV< W < 6.3 GeV, and -t' < 0.4 GeV2. Using an unbinned maximum-likelihood method, 25 parameters are extracted. These determine the real and imaginary parts of the ratios of several helicity amplitudes describing rho(0)-meson production by a virtual photon. The denominator of those ratios is the dominant amplitude, the nucleon-helicity-non-flip amplitude F-0 (1/2 0 1/2), which describes the production of a longitudinal rho(0)-meson by a longitudinal virtual photon. The ratios of nucleon-helicity-nonflip amplitudes are found to be in good agreement with those from the previous HERMES analysis. The transverse target polarization allows for the first time the extraction of ratios of a number of nucleon-helicity-flip amplitudes to F-0 (1/2 0 1/2). Results obtained in a handbag approach based on generalized parton distributions taking into account the contribution from pion exchange are found to be in good agreement with these ratios. Within the model, the data favor a positive sign for the pi - rho transition form factor. By also exploiting the longitudinal beam polarization, a total of 71.0 spin-density matrix elements is determined from the extracted 25 parameters, in contrast to only 53 elements as directly determined in earlier analyses.
