We present the first 3D kinematic analysis of multiple stellar populations (MPs) in a representative sample of 16 Galactic globular clusters (GCs). For each GC in the sample we studied the MP line-of-sight, plane-of-the-sky and 3D rotation as well as the velocity distribution anisotropy. The differences between first- (FP) and second-population (SP) kinematic patterns were constrained by means of parameters specifically defined to provide a global measure of the relevant physical quantities and to enable a meaningful comparison among different clusters. Our analysis provides the first observational description of the MP kinematic properties and of the path they follow during the long-term dynamical evolution. In particular, we find evidence of differences between the rotation of MPs along all velocity components with the SP preferentially rotating faster than the FP. The difference between the rotation strength of MPs is anti-correlated with the cluster dynamical age. We observe also that FPs are characterized by isotropic velocity distributions at any dynamical age probed by our sample. On the contrary, the velocity distribution of SP stars is found to be radially anisotropic in dynamically young clusters and isotropic at later evolutionary stages. The comparison with a set of numerical simulations shows that these observational results are consistent with the long-term evolution of clusters forming with an initially more centrally concentrated and more rapidly rotating SP subsystem. Context. Globular clusters (GCs) are suggested to host many stellar-mass black holes (BHs) at their centers, thus resulting in ideal testbeds for BH formation and retention theories. BHs are expected to play a major role in GC structural and dynamical evolution and their study has attracted a lot of attention. In recent years, several works attempted to constrain the BH mass fraction in GCs typically by comparing a single observable (for example mass segregation proxies) with scaling relations obtained from numerical simulations. Aims. We aim to uncover the possible intrinsic degeneracies in determining the BH mass fraction from single dynamical parameters and identify the possible parameter combinations that are able to break these degeneracies. Methods. We used a set of 101 Monte Carlo simulations sampling a large grid of initial conditions. In particular, we explored the impact of different BH natal kick prescriptions on widely adopted scaling relations. We then compared the results of our simulations with observations obtained using state-of-the-art HST photometric and astrometric catalogs for a sample of 30 Galactic GCs. Results. We find that using a single observable to infer the present-day BH mass fraction in GCs is degenerate, as similar values could be attained by simulations including different BH mass fractions. We argue that the combination of mass-segregation indicators with GC velocity dispersion ratios could help us to break this degeneracy efficiently. We show that such a combination of parameters can be derived with currently available data. We present a high resolution chemical study of a representative sample of 21 luminous giant stars of Liller~1, a complex stellar system in the Galactic bulge, based on H band spectra acquired with the Near InfraRed Spectrograph at KeckII. 15 stars turn out to have a subsolar iron abundance and enhanced [$\alpha$/Fe] and [Al/Fe], likely old that formed early and quickly from gas mainly enriched by type~II supernovae, and 6 stars with supersolar iron and roughly solar-scaled [$\alpha$/Fe] and [Al/Fe], likely younger, thus formed at later epochs from gas also enriched by type~Ia supernovae. Moreover, both subpopulations show enhanced [N/Fe], as in the bulge field, about solar-scaled [V/Fe], and depletion of [C/Fe] and $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C with respect to the solar values, indicating the occurrence of significant mixing in the stellar interiors of these evolved stars. The current study has also made evident that the sub-solar subpopulation shows some structuring, and the presence of a third subcomponent with iron content and [$\alpha$/Fe] enhancement somewhat intermediate between the metal-poor and metal-rich main subpopulations, has been statistically assessed, providing the chemical signature of an extended star formation with multiple bursts and of some self-enrichment., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in A&A

We used near-infrared spectroscopy at medium-high resolution (R=8,000$-$25,000) to perform the first comprehensive chemical study of the intermediate luminosity bulge globular cluster Terzan~6. We derived detailed abundances and abundance patterns of 27 giant stars, likely members of Terzan~6, based on their accurate Hubble Space Telescope proper motions and line-of-sight radial velocities. From the spectral analysis of these stars, we determined an average heliocentric radial velocity of 143.3$\pm$1.0 km s$^{-1}$ with a velocity dispersion of 5.1$\pm$0.7 km s$^{-1}$ and an average [Fe/H]=$-0.65\pm0.01$ and a low 1$\sigma$ dispersion of 0.03 dex. We also measured some depletion of [Mn/Fe] with respect to the solar-scaled values and enhancement of for [Ca/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Mg/Fe], [Ti/Fe], [O/Fe], [Al/Fe], [Na/Fe], and, to a lower extent, for [K/Fe], consistent with previous measurements of other bulge globular clusters and favoring the scenario of a rapid bulge formation and chemical enrichment. Some spread in the light element abundances suggest the presence of first- and second-generation stars, typical of genuine globulars. Finally, we measured some depletion of carbon and low $\rm ^{12}C/^{13}C$ isotopic ratios, as in previous studies of field and cluster bulge giants, indicating that extra-mixing mechanisms should be at work during the post main sequence evolution in the high metallicity regime as well., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present the first comprehensive chemical study of a representative sample of 27 luminous red giant branch (RGB) stars belonging to Liller 1, a complex stellar system in the Galactic bulge. This study is based on medium-resolution near-infrared spectra acquired with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope. We found a subpopulation counting 22 stars with subsolar metallicity ($<$[Fe/H]$>=-0.31\pm0.02$ and 1$\sigma$ dispersion of 0.08 dex) and with enhanced [$\alpha$/Fe], [Al/Fe], and [K/Fe] that likely formed early and quickly from gas that was mainly enriched by type II supernovae, and a metal-rich population counting 5 stars with supersolar metallicity ($<$[Fe/H]$>$=+0.22$\pm$0.03 and 1$\sigma$ dispersion of 0.06 dex) and roughly solar-scaled [$\alpha$/Fe], [Al/Fe], and [K/Fe] that formed at later epochs from gas that was also enriched by type Ia supernovae. Moreover, both subpopulations show enhanced [Na/Fe], as in the bulge field, about solar-scaled [V/Fe], and depletion of [C/Fe] and $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C with respect to the solar values. This indicates that mixing and extra-mixing processes during the RGB evolution also occur at very high metallicities. Notably, no evidence of a Na-O anticorrelation, which is considered the fingerprint of genuine globular clusters, has been found. This challenges any formation scenarios that invoke the accretion of a molecular cloud or an additional stellar system onto a genuine globular cluster. The results of this study underline the strong chemical similarity between Liller 1 and Terzan 5 and support the hypothesis that these complex stellar systems might be fossil fragments of the epoch of Galactic bulge formation., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in A&A

We report on the discovery of the companion star to the millisecond pulsar PSR J1835-3259B in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6652. Taking advantage of deep photometric archival observations acquired through the Hubble Space Telescope in near-ultraviolet and optical bands, we identified a bright and blue object at a position compatible with that of the radio pulsar. The companion is located along the helium-core white dwarf cooling sequence and the comparison with binary evolution models provides a mass of $0.17 \pm 0.02~M_\odot$, a surface temperature of $11500\pm1900$ K and a very young cooling age of only $200\pm100$ Myr. The mass and the age of the companion are compatible with a progenitor star of about $0.87~M_{\odot}$, which started transferring mass to the primary during its evolution along the sub-giant branch and stopped during the early red giant branch phase. Combining together the pulsar mass function and the companion mass, we found that this system is observed at an almost edge-on orbit and hosts a neutron star with a mass of $1.44 \pm 0.06~M_\odot$, thus suggesting a highly non-conservative mass accretion phase. The young age of the WD companion is consistent with the scenario of a powerful, relatively young MSP indicated by the earlier detection of gamma-rays from this system., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Liller 1 and Terzan 5 are two massive systems in the Milky-Way bulge hosting populations characterized by significantly different ages ($\Delta t>7-8$ Gyr) and metallicities ($\Delta$[Fe/H]$\sim1$ dex). Their origin is still strongly debated in the literature and all formation scenarios proposed so far require some level of fine-tuning. The detailed star formation histories (SFHs) of these systems may represent an important piece of information to assess their origin. Here we present the first attempt to perform such an analysis for Liller 1. The first key result we find is that Liller 1 has been forming stars over its entire lifetime. More specifically, three broad SF episodes are clearly detected: 1) a dominant one, occurred some 12-13 Gyr ago with a tail extending for up to $\sim3$ Gyr, 2) an intermediate burst, between 6 and 9 Gyr ago, 3) and a recent one, occurred between 1 and 3 Gyr ago. The old population contributes to about $70\%$ of the total stellar mass and the remaining fraction is almost equally split between the intermediate and young populations. If we take these results at a face value, they would suggest that this system unlikely formed through the merger between an old globular cluster and a Giant Molecular Cloud, as recently proposed. On the contrary, our findings provide further support to the idea that Liller 1 is the surviving relic of a massive primordial structure that contributed to the Galactic bulge formation, similarly to the giant clumps observed in star-forming high-redshift galaxies., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

Recently, a new class of white dwarfs (``slowly cooling WDs'') has been identified in the globular cluster M13. The cooling time of these stars is increased by stable thermonuclear hydrogen burning in their residual envelope. These WDs are thought to be originated by horizontal branch (HB) stars populating the HB blue tail, which skipped the asymptotic giant branch phase. To further explore this phenomenon, we took advantage of deep photometric data acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope in the near-ultraviolet and investigate the bright portion of the WD cooling sequence in NGC 6752, another Galactic globular cluster with metallicity, age and HB morphology similar to M13. The normalized WD luminosity function derived in NGC 6752 turns out to be impressively similar to that observed in M13, in agreement with the fact that the stellar mass distribution along the HB of these two systems is almost identical. As in the case of M13, the comparison with theoretical predictions is consistent with $\sim 70\%$ of the investigated WDs evolving at slower rates than standard, purely cooling WDs. Thanks to its relatively short distance from Earth, NGC 6752 photometry reaches a luminosity one order of a magnitude fainter than the case of M13, allowing us to sample a regime where the cooling time delay, with respect to standard WD models, reaches $\sim 300$ Myr. The results presented in this paper provide new evidence for the existence of slowly cooling WDs and further support to the scenario proposing a direct causal connection between this phenomenon and the horizontal branch morphology of the host stellar cluster., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

A number of studies based on data collected by the $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ ($\textit{HST}$) GO-13297 program "HST Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters: Shedding UV Light on Their Populations and Formation" have investigated the photometric properties of a large sample of Galactic globular clusters and revolutionized our understanding of their stellar populations. In this paper, we expand previous studies by focusing our attention on the stellar clusters' internal kinematics. We computed proper motions for stars in 56 globular and one open clusters by combining the GO-13297 images with archival $\textit{HST}$ data. The astro-photometric catalogs released with this paper represent the most complete and homogeneous collection of proper motions of stars in the cores of stellar clusters to date, and expand the information provided by the current (and future) $\textit{Gaia}$ data releases to much fainter stars and into the crowded central regions. We also census the general kinematic properties of stellar clusters by computing the velocity-dispersion and anisotropy radial profiles of their bright members. We study the dependence on concentration and relaxation time, and derive dynamical distances. We present an investigation of the internal kinematic properties of M79 (NGC 1904). Our study is based on radial velocity measurements obtained from the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters for more than 1700 individual stars distributed between $\sim 0.3^{\prime\prime}$ and $770^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim14$ three-dimensional half-mass radii), from the center. Our analysis reveals the presence of ordered line-of-sight rotation with a rotation axis almost aligned along the East-West direction and a velocity peak of $1.5$ km s$^{-1}$ at $\sim 70^{\prime\prime}$ from the rotation axis. The velocity dispersion profile is well described by the same King model that best fits the projected density distribution, with a constant central plateau at $\sigma_0\sim 6$ km s$^{-1}$. To investigate the cluster rotation in the plane of the sky, we have analyzed the proper motions provided by the Gaia EDR3, finding a signature of rotation with a maximum amplitude of $\sim 2.0$ km s$^{-1}$ at $\sim 80^{\prime\prime}$ from the cluster center. Analyzing the three-dimensional velocity distribution, for a sub-sample of 130 stars, we confirm the presence of systemic rotation and find a rotation axis inclination angle of $37${\deg} with respect to the line-of-sight. As a final result, the comparison of the observed rotation curves with the results of a representative N-body simulation of a rotating star cluster shows that the present-day kinematic properties of NGC 1904 are consistent with those of a dynamically old system that has lost a significant fraction of its initial angular momentum., Comment: 30 pages, 20 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a numerical study, based on Monte Carlo simulations, aimed at defining new empirical parameters measurable from observations and able to trace the different phases of star cluster dynamical evolution. As expected, a central density cusp, deviating from the King model profile, develops during the core collapse (CC) event. Although the slope varies during the post-CC oscillations, the cusp remains a stable feature characterizing the central portion of the density profile in all post-CC stages. We then investigate the normalized cumulative radial distribution (nCRD) drawn by all the cluster stars included within one half the tridimensional half-mass radius (R<0.5 rh), finding that its morphology varies in time according to the cluster's dynamical stage. To quantify these changes we defined three parameters: A5, the area subtended by the nCRD within 5% of the half-mass radius, P5, the value of the nCRD measured at the same distance, and S2.5, the slope of the straight line tangent to the nCRD measured at R=2.5% rh. The three parameters evolve similarly during the cluster's dynamical evolution: after an early phase in which they are essentially constant, their values rapidly increase, reaching their maximum at the CC epoch and slightly decreasing in the post-CC phase, when their average value remains significantly larger than the initial one, in spite of some fluctuations. White Dwarfs (WDs) are the final evolutionary product of the vast majority of stars in the Universe. They are electron-degenerate structures characterized by no stable thermonuclear activity, and their evolution is generally described as a pure cooling process. Their cooling rate is adopted as cosmic chronometer to constrain the age of several Galactic populations, including the disk, globular and open clusters. By analysing high-resolution photometric data of two twin Galactic globular clusters (M3 and M13), we find a clear-cut and unexpected over-abundance of bright WDs in M13. Theoretical models suggest that, consistently with the horizontal branch morphology, this over-abundance is due to a slowing down of the cooling process in ~70% of the WDs in M13, caused by stable thermonuclear burning in their residual hydrogen-rich envelope. This is the first observational evidence of quiescent thermonuclear activity occurring in cooling WDs and it brings new attention on the use of the WD cooling rate as cosmic chronometer for low metallicity environments., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures, published in Nature Astronomy

We present a multi-instrument spectroscopic analysis of the unique Li/Na-rich giant star 25664 in Omega Centauri using spectra acquired with FLAMES-GIRAFFE, X-SHOOTER, UVES and HARPS. Li and Na abundances have been derived from the UVES spectrum using transitions weakly sensitive to non-local thermodynamic equilibrium and assumed isotopic ratio. This new analysis confirms the surprising Li and Na abundances of this star (A(Li) =+2.71+-0.07 dex, [Na/Fe]=+1.00+-0.05 dex). Additionally, we provide new pieces of evidence for its chemical characterisation. The 12C/13C isotopic ratio (15+-2) shows that this star has not yet undergone the extra-mixing episode usually associated with the red giant branch bump. Therefore, we can rule out the scenario of efficient deep extra-mixing during the red giant branch phase envisaged to explain the high Li and Na abundances. Also, the star exhibits high abundances of both C and N ([C/Fe]=+0.45+-0.16 dex and [N/Fe]=+0.99+-0.20 dex), not compatible with the typical C-N anticorrelation observed in globular cluster stars. We found evidence of a radial velocity variability in 25664, suggesting that the star could be part of a binary system, likely having accreted material from a more massive companion when the latter was evolving in the AGB phase. Viable candidates for the donor star are AGB stars with 3-4 Msun and super-AGB stars (~7-8 Msun), both able to produce Li- and Na-rich material. Alternatively, the star could be formed from the pure ejecta of a super-AGB stars, before the dilution with primordial gas occurs., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

The formation and evolutionary processes of galaxy bulges are still unclear, and the presence of young stars in the bulge of the Milky Way is largely debated. We recently demonstrated that Terzan 5, in the Galactic bulge, is a complex stellar system hosting stars with very different ages and a striking chemical similarity to the field population. This indicates that its progenitor was likely one of the giant structures that are thought to generate bulges through coalescence. Here we show that another globular cluster-like system in the bulge (Liller 1) hosts two distinct stellar populations with remarkably different ages: only 1-3 Gyr for the youngest, 12 Gyr for the oldest, which is impressively similar to the old component of Terzan 5. This discovery classifies Liller 1 and Terzan 5 as sites of recent star formation in the Galactic bulge and provides clear observational proof that the hierarchical assembly of primordial massive structures contributed to the formation of the Milky Way spheroid., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, typo in author affiliation fixed, published in Nature Astronomy

We constructed a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) astro-photometric catalog of the central region of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 1261. This catalog, complemented with Gaia DR2 data sampling the external regions, has been used to estimate the structural parameters of the system (i.e., core, half-mass, tidal radii and concentration) from its resolved star density profile. We computed high-precision proper motions thanks to multi-epoch HST data and derived the cluster velocity dispersion profile in the plane of the sky for the innermost region, finding that the system is isotropic. The combination with line-of-sight information collected from spectroscopy in the external regions provided us with the cluster velocity dispersion profile along the entire radial extension. We also measured the absolute proper motion of NGC 1261 using a few background galaxies as a reference. We discuss the observational properties of a special class of objects (the so-called "Blue Straggler Stars", BSSs) in the framework of using this stellar population as probe of the dynamical processes occurring in high-density stellar systems. Indeed, the shape of the BSS radial distribution and their level of central concentration are powerful tracers of the stage of dynamical evolution reached by the host cluster since formation. Hence, they can be used as empirical chronometers able to measure the dynamical age of stellar systems. In addition, the presence of a double BSS sequence in the color-magnitude diagram is likely the signature of the most extreme dynamical process occurring in globular cluster life: the core collapse event. We used resolved star counts from Hubble Space Telescope images to determine the center of gravity and the projected density profiles of 6 old globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), namely NGC 1466, NGC 1841, NGC 1898, NGC 2210, NGC 2257 and Hodge 11. For each system, the LMC field contribution was properly taken into account by making use, when needed, of parallel HST observations. The derived values of the center of gravity may differ by several arcseconds (corresponding to more than 1 pc at the distance of the LMC) from previous determinations. The cluster density profiles are all well fit by King models, with structural parameters that may differ from the literature ones by even factors of two. Similarly to what observed for Galactic globular clusters, the ratio between the effective and the core radii has been found to anti-correlate with the cluster dynamical age., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, in press on the ApJ

We studied the spatial distributions of multiple stellar populations (MPs) in a sample of 20 globular clusters (GCs) spanning a broad range of dynamical ages. The differences between first-population (FP) and second-population (SP) stars were measured by means of the parameter $A^+$, defined as the area enclosed between their cumulative radial distributions. We provide the first purely observational evidence of the dynamical path followed by MPs from initial conditions toward a complete FP-SP spatial mixing. Less dynamically evolved clusters have SP stars more centrally concentrated than FPs, while in more dynamically evolved systems the spatial differences between FP and SP stars decrease and eventually disappear. By means of an appropriate comparison with a set of numerical simulations, we show that these observational results are consistent with the evolutionary sequence expected by the long-term dynamical evolution of clusters forming with an initially more centrally concentrated SP sub-system. This result is further supported by the evidence of a trend between $A^+$ and the stage of GC dynamical evolution inferred by the ratio between the present-day and the initial mass of the cluster., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The distribution of size as a function of age observed for star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is very puzzling: young clusters are all compact, while the oldest systems show both small and large sizes. It is commonly interpreted as due to a population of binary black holes driving a progressive expansion of cluster cores. Here we propose, instead, that it is the natural consequence of the fact that only relatively low-mass clusters have formed in the last ~3 Gyr in the LMC and only the most compact systems survived and are observable. The spread in size displayed by the oldest (and most massive) clusters, instead, can be explained in terms of initial conditions and internal dynamical evolution. To quantitatively explore the role of the latter, we selected a sample of five coeval and old LMC clusters with different sizes, and we estimated their dynamical age from the level of central segregation of blue straggler stars (the so-called dynamical clock). Similarly to what found in the Milky Way, we indeed measure different levels of dynamical evolution among the selected coeval clusters, with large-core systems being dynamically younger than those with small size. We have constructed the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of a sample of Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs) in the core of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, taking advantage of the large set of high resolution images, ranging from the ultraviolet to the near infrared, obtained with the ACS/HRC camera of the Hubble Space Telescope. Our final BSS sample consists of 22 objects, spanning the whole color and magnitude extension of the BSS sequence in 47 Tucanae. We fitted the BSS broadband SEDs with models to derive temperature, surface gravity, radius, luminosity and mass. We show that BSSs indeed define a mass sequence, where the mass increases for increasing luminosity. Interestingly, the BSS masses estimates from the SED fitting turn out to be comparable to those derived from the projection of the stellar position in the color-magnitude diagram onto standard star evolutionary tracks. We compare our results with previous, direct mass estimates of a few BSSs in 47 Tucanae. We also find a couple of supermassive BSS candidates, i.e., BSSs with a mass larger than twice the turn-off mass, the formation of which must have involved more than two progenitors., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report on the discovery of the companion star to the millisecond pulsar J1342+2822B in the globular cluster M3. We exploited a combination of near-ultraviolet and optical observations acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope in order to search for the optical counterparts to the known millisecond pulsars in this cluster. At a position in excellent agreement with that of the radio pulsar J1342+2822B (M3B), we have identified a blue and faint object (mF275W \approx 22.45) that, in the color-magnitude diagram of the cluster, is located in the region of He core white dwarfs. From the comparison of the observed magnitudes with theoretical cooling tracks we have estimated the physical properties of the companion star: it has a mass of only 0.19 \pm 0.02 Msun, a surface temperature of 12 \pm 1 x 10^3 K and a cooling age of 1.0\pm0.2 Gyr. Its progenitor was likely a ~ 0.84 M star and the bulk of the mass-transfer activity occurred during the sub-giant branch phase. The companion mass, combined with the pulsar mass function, implies that this system is observed almost edge-on and that the neutron star has a mass of 1.1 \pm 0.3 Msun, in agreement with the typical values measured for recycled neutron stars in these compact binary systems. We have also identified a candidate counterpart to the wide and eccentric binary millisecond pulsar J1342+2822D. It is another white dwarf with a He core and a mass of 0.22 \pm 0.2 Msun, implying that the system is observed at a high inclination angle and hosts a typical NS with a mass of 1.3 \pm 0.3 Msun. At the moment, the large uncertainty on the radio position of this millisecond pulsar prevents us from robustly concluding that the detected star is its optical counterpart., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Li et al. (2018a; Li18a) claimed that the young stellar cluster NGC2173 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) harbours a bifurcated sequence of blue straggler stars (BSSs), similar to those detected in a few dynamically old globular clusters. However, Dalessandro et al. (2019; D19) re-analyzed the data by taking into account the contamination of the cluster population from LMC field stars, which was completely neglected by L18a. D19 showed that $\sim40\%$ of the selected BSS sample (and especially the population observed along one of the two sequences) is composed of field star interlopers, concluding that the double BSS sequence is most likely a field contamination artefact. In a recent note Li et al. (2018b) argued that the analysis by D19 is affected by two issues related to (1) the use of different HST instruments/filters in the decontamination procedure, and (2) a presumed overestimate of the number of field stars, which show a central radial segregation. Here we demonstrate that the D19 decontamination procedure is completely unaffected by the use of different HST instruments, and that, the field stars removed by D19 have no significant radial segregation toward the cluster center. We used high-resolution optical HST/WFC3 and multi-conjugate adaptive optics assisted GEMINI GeMS/GSAOI observations in the near-infrared to investigate the physical properties of the globular cluster NGC 6569 in the Galactic bulge. We have obtained the deepest purely NIR color-magnitude diagram published so far for this cluster using ground-based observations, reaching $K_{s}$ $\approx$ 21.0 mag (two magnitudes below the main-sequence turn-off point). By combining the two datasets secured at two different epochs, we determined relative proper motions for a large sample of individual stars in the center of NGC 6569, allowing a robust selection of cluster member stars. Our proper motion analysis solidly demonstrates that, despite its relatively high metal content, NGC 6569 hosts some blue horizontal branch stars. A differential reddening map has been derived in the direction of the system, revealing a maximum color excess variation of about $\delta E(B-V)$ $\sim$ 0.12 mag in the available field of view. The absolute age of NGC 6569 has been determined for the first time. In agreement with the other few bulge globular clusters with available age estimates, NGC 6569 turns out to be old, with an age of about 12.8 Gyr, and a typical uncertainty of 0.8-1.0 Gyr., Comment: 25 pages, 16 Figures, 1 Table. Terzan 5 is a complex stellar system in the Galactic bulge, harboring stellar populations with very different iron content ({\Delta}[Fe/H] ~1 dex) and with ages differing by several Gyrs. Here we present an investigation of its variable stars. We report on the discovery and characterization of three RR Lyrae stars. For these newly discovered RR Lyrae and for six Miras of known periods we provide radial velocity and chemical abundances from spectra acquired with X-SHOOTER at the VLT. We find that the three RR Lyrae and the three short period Miras (P<300 d) have radial velocity consistent with being Terzan 5 members. They have sub-solar iron abundances and enhanced [{\alpha}/Fe], well matching the age and abundance patterns of the 12 Gyr metal-poor stellar populations of Terzan 5. Only one, out of the three long period (P>300 d) Miras analyzed in this study, has a radial velocity consistent with being Terzan 5 member. Its super-solar iron abundance and solar-scaled [{\alpha}/Fe] nicely match the chemical properties of the metal rich stellar population of Terzan 5 and its derived mass nicely agrees with being several Gyrs younger than the short period Miras. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the globular cluster NGC6752 have been found to exhibit some chemical peculiarities with respect to the red giant branch (RGB) stars. A discrepancy between [FeI/H] and [FeII/H] (not observed in RGB stars) has been detected adopting spectroscopic temperatures. Moreover, a possible lack of second-population stars along the AGB was claimed. The use of photometric temperatures based on (V-K) colors was proposed to erase this iron discrepancy. Also, ad hoc scenarios have been proposed to explain the absence of second-population AGB stars. Here we analyzed a sample of 19 AGB and 14 RGB stars of NGC6752 observed with the spectrographs UVES. The two temperature scales agree very well for the RGB stars while for the AGB stars there is a systematic offset of ~100 K. We found that even if the photometric temperatures alleviate the iron discrepancy with respect to the spectroscopic ones, a systematic difference between [FeI/H] and [FeII/H] is still found among the AGB stars. An unexpected result is that the photometric temperatures do not satisfy the excitation equilibrium in the AGB stars. This suggests that standard 1D-LTE model atmospheres are unable to properly describe the thermal structure of AGB stars, at variance with the RGB stars. The use of photometric temperatures confirms the previous detection of second-population AGB stars in this cluster, with the presence of clear correlations/anticorrelations among the light element abundances. Here we discuss the case of the double Blue Straggler Star (BSS) sequence recently detected in the young stellar cluster NGC 2173 in the Large Magellanic Cloud by Li et al (2018). In order to investigate this feature we made use of two HST sets of observations, one (the same one used by Li et al.) probing the cluster central regions, and the other sampling the surrounding field. We demonstrate that when field star decontamination is applied, ~40% of BSS population selected by Li et al. turns out to be composed by field stars interlopers. This contamination mainly affects one of the two sequences, which therefore disappears in the decontaminated colour-magnitude diagram. We analyse the result of tens different decontamination realisations: in none of them we find evidence of a double BSS sequence. Hence we conclude that NGC 2173 harbours a normal single (poorly populated) BSS sequence and that particular care needs to be devoted to the field decontamination process in any study aimed at probing stellar population features or star counts in the LMC clusters., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in A&A

As part of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, we present a detailed investigation of the internal kinematics of NGC 5986. The analysis is based on about 300 individual radial velocities of stars located at various distances from the cluster center, up to 300 arcseconds (about 4 half-mass radii). Our analysis reveals the presence of a solid-body rotation extending from the cluster center to the outermost regions probed by the data, and a velocity dispersion profile initially declining with the distance from the cluster's center, but flattening and staying constant at ~5 km/s for distances larger than about one half-mass radius. This is the first globular cluster for which evidence of the joint presence of solid-body rotation and flattening in the outer velocity dispersion profile is found. The combination of these two kinematical features provides a unique opportunity to shed light on fundamental aspects of globular cluster dynamics and probe the extent to which internal relaxation, star escape, angular momentum transport and loss, and the interaction with the Galaxy tidal field can affect a cluster's dynamical evolution and determine its current kinematical properties. We present a detailed analysis of the kinematic properties of the multiple populations (MPs) in the low-mass Galactic globular cluster NGC6362 based on a sample of about 500 member stars for which radial velocities (RVs), Fe and Na abundances have been homogeneously derived. At distances from the cluster center larger than about 0.5 $r_h$, we find that first (FG - Na-poor) and second generation (SG - Na-rich) stars show hints of different line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles, with FG stars being dynamically hotter. This is the first time that differences in the velocity dispersion of MPs are detected by using only RVs. While kinematic differences between MPs in globular clusters are usually described in terms of anisotropy differences driven by the different radial distributions, this explanation seems hardly viable for NGC6362, where SG and FG stars are spatially mixed. We demonstrate that the observed difference in the velocity dispersion profiles can be accounted for by the effect of binary stars. In fact, thanks to our multi-epoch RV measurements we find that the binary fraction is significantly larger in the FG sample (f~14%) than in SG population (f<1%), and we show that such a difference can inflate the velocity dispersion of FG with respect to SG by the observed amount in the relevant radial range. In this paper we review the operational definition of the so-called main sequence knee (MS-knee), a feature in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) occurring at the low-mass end of the MS. The magnitude of this feature is predicted to be independent of age at fixed chemical composition. For this reason, its difference in magnitude with respect to the MS turn-off (MS-TO) point has been suggested as a possible diagnostic to estimate absolute globular cluster (GC) ages. We first demonstrate that the operational definition of the MS-knee currently adopted in the literature refers to the inflection point of the MS (that we here more appropriately named MS-saddle), a feature that is well distinct from the knee and that cannot be used as its proxy. The MS-knee is only visible in near-infrared CMDs, while the MS-saddle can be also detected in optical-NIR CMDs. By using different sets of isochrones we then demonstrate that the absolute magni- tude of the MS-knee varies by a few tenths of a dex from one model to another, thus showing that at the moment stellar models may not capture the full systematic error in the method. We also demonstrate that while the absolute magnitude of the MS-saddle is almost coincident in different models, it has a systematic dependence on the adopted color combinations which is not predicted by stellar models. Hence, it cannot be used as a reliable reference for absolute age determination. Moreover, when statistical and systematic uncertainties are properly taken into ac- count, the difference in magnitude between the MS-TO and the MS-saddle does not provide absolute ages with better accuracy than other methods like the MS-fitting., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables. The parameter A+, defined as the area enclosed between the cumulative radial distribution of blue straggler stars (BSSs) and that of a reference population, is a powerful indicator of the level of BSS central segregation. As part of the Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of Galactic globular clusters (GCs), here we present the BSS population and the determination of A+ in 27 GCs observed out to about one half-mass radius. In combination with 21 additional clusters discussed in a previous paper this provides us with a global sample of 48 systems (corresponding to \sim 32\% of the Milky Way GC population), for which we find a strong correlation between A+ and the ratio of cluster age to the current central relaxation time. Tight relations have been found also with the core radius and the central luminosity density, which are expected to change with the long-term cluster dynamical evolution. An interesting relation is emerging between A+ and the ratio of the BSS velocity dispersion relative to that of main sequence turn-off stars, which measures the degree of energy equipartition experienced by BSSs in the cluster. These results provide further confirmation that BSSs are invaluable probes of GC internal dynamics and A+ is a powerful dynamical clock., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

In the context of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, we present the line-of-sight rotation curve and velocity dispersion profile of M5 (NGC 5904), as determined from the radial velocity of more than 800 individual stars observed out to 700" (~ 5 half-mass radii) from the center. We find one of the cleanest and most coherent rotation patterns ever observed for globular clusters, with a very stable rotation axis (having constant position angle of 145^o at all surveyed radii) and a well-defined rotation curve. The density distribution turns out to be flattened in the direction perpendicular to the rotation axis, with a maximum ellipticity of 0.15. The rotation velocity peak (~3 km/s in projection) is observed at ~0.6 half-mass radii, and its ratio with respect to the central velocity dispersion (~0.3-0.4 at 4 projected half-mass radii) indicates that ordered motions play a significant dynamical role. This result strengthens the growing empirical evidence of the kinematic complexity of Galactic globular clusters and motivates the need of fundamental investigations of the role of angular momentum in collisional stellar dynamics., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, ApJ submitted. We present the first results of the Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters, a project aimed at exploring the internal kinematics of a representative sample of Galactic globular clusters from the radial velocity of individual stars, covering the entire radial extension of each system. This is achieved by exploiting the formidable combination of multi-object and integral field unit spectroscopic facilities of the ESO Very Large Telescope. As a first step, here we discuss the results obtained for 11 clusters from high and medium resolution spectra acquired through a combination of FLAMES and KMOS observations. We provide the first kinematical characterization of NGC 1261 and NGC 6496. In all the surveyed systems, the velocity dispersion profile declines at increasing radii, in agreement with the expectation from the King model that best fits the density/luminosity profile. In the majority of the surveyed systems we find evidence of rotation within a few half-mass radii from the center. These results are in general overall agreement with the predictions of recent theoretical studies, suggesting that the detected signals could be the relic of significant internal rotation set at the epoch of the cluster's formation., Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures, ApJ, in press

We present a detailed analysis of the radial distribution of light-element multiple populations (LE-MPs) in the massive and dense globular cluster M80 based on the combination of UV and optical Hubble Space Telescope data. Surprisingly, we find that first generation stars (FG) are significantly more centrally concentrated than extreme second generation ones (SG) out to $\sim 2.5 r_h$ from the cluster center. To understand the origin of such a peculiar behavior, we used a set of $N$-body simulations following the long-term dynamical evolution of LE-MPs. We find that, given the advanced dynamical state of the cluster, the observed difference does not depend on the primordial relative distributions of FG and SG stars. On the contrary, a difference of $\sim 0.05-0.10 M_{\odot}$ between the average masses of the two sub-populations is needed to account for the observed radial distributions. We argue that such a mass difference might be the result of the higher He abundance of SG stars (of the order of $\Delta Y\sim 0.05-0.06$) with respect to FG. Interestingly, we find that a similar He variation is necessary to reproduce the horizontal branch morphology of M80. These results demonstrate that differences in mass among LE-MPs, due to different He content, should be properly taken into account for a correct interpretation of their radial distribution, at least in dynamically evolved systems., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in ApJ

NGC5824 is a massive Galactic globular cluster suspected to have an intrinsic spread in its iron content, according to the strength of the calcium triplet lines. We present chemical abundances of 117 cluster giant stars using high-resolution spectra acquired with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES. The metallicity distribution of 87 red giant branch stars is peaked at [Fe/H]=-2.11+-0.01 dex, while that derived from 30 asymptotic giant branch stars is peaked at [Fe/H]=-2.20+-0.01 dex. Both the distributions are compatible with a null spread, pointing out that this cluster did not retain the ejecta of supernovae. The small iron abundance offset between the two groups of stars is similar to those already observed among red and asymptotic giant branch stars in other clusters. The lack of intrinsic iron spread rules out the possibility that NGC5824 is the remnant of a disrupted dwarf galaxy, as previously suggested. We also find evidence of the chemical anomalies usually observed in globular clusters, namely the Na-O and the Mg-Al anticorrelations. In particular, NGC5824 exhibits a huge range of [Mg/Fe] abundance, observed only in a few metal-poor and/or massive clusters. We conclude that NGC5824 is a normal globular cluster, without spread in [Fe/H] but with an unusually large spread in [Mg/Fe], possibly due to an efficient self-enrichment driven by massive asymptotic giant branch stars., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ. 31 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

We report on the discovery of three new millisecond pulsars (namely J1748-2446aj, J1748-2446ak and J1748-2446al) in the inner regions of the dense stellar system Terzan 5. These pulsars have been discovered thanks to a method, alternative to the classical search routines, that exploited the large set of archival observations of Terzan 5 acquired with the Green Bank Telescope over 5 years (from 2010 to 2015). This technique allowed the analysis of stacked power spectra obtained by combining ~206 hours of observation. J1748-2446aj has a spin period of ~2.96 ms, J1748-2446ak of ~1.89 ms (thus it is the fourth fastest pulsar in the cluster) and J1748-2446al of ~5.95 ms. All the three millisecond pulsars are isolated and currently we have timing solutions only for J1748-2446aj and J1748-2446ak. For these two systems, we evaluated the contribution to the measured spin-down rate of the acceleration due to the cluster potential field, thus estimating the intrinsic spin-down rates, which are in agreement with those typically measured for millisecond pulsars in globular clusters. Our results increase to 37 the number of pulsars known in Terzan 5, which now hosts 25% of the entire pulsar population identified, so far, in globular clusters., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) hosts a large number of candidate stellar cluster pairs. Binary stellar clusters provide important clues about cluster formation processes and the evolutionary history of the host galaxy. However, to properly extract and interpret this information, it is crucial to fully constrain the fraction of real binary systems and their physical properties. Here we present a detailed photometric analysis based on ESO-FORS2 images of three candidate cluster multiplets in the LMC, namely SL349-SL353, SL385-SL387-NGC1922 and NGC1836-BRHT4b-NGC1839. For each cluster we derived ages, structural parameters and morphological properties. We have also estimated the degree of filling of their Roche lobe, as an approximate tool to measure the strength of the tidal perturbations induced by the LMC. We find that the members of the possible pairs SL349-SL353 and BRHT4b-NGC1839 have a similar age ($t = 1.00 \pm 0.12$ Gyr and $t = 140 \pm 15$ Myr, respectively), thus possibly hinting to a common origin of their member systems We also find that all candidate pairs in our sample show evidence of intra-cluster overdensities that can be a possible indication of real binarity. Particularly interesting is the case of SL349-SL353. In fact, SL353 is relatively close to the condition of critical filling, thus suggesting that these systems might actually constitute an energetically bound pair. It is therefore key to pursue a detailed kinematic screening of such clusters, without which, at present, we do not dare making a conclusive statement about the true nature of this putative pair., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We used a combination of deep optical and Halpha images of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6440, acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope, to identify the optical counterpart to the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1748.9-2021during quiescence. A strong Halpha emission has been detected from a main sequence star (hereafter COM-SAX J1748.9-2021) located at only 0.15" from the nominal position of the X-ray source. The position of the star also agrees with the optical counterpart found by Verbunt et al. (2000) during an outburst. We propose this star as the most likely optical counterpart to the binary system. By direct comparison with isochrones, we estimated that COM-SAX J1748.9-2021 has a mass of 0.70 Msun - 0.83 Msun, a radius of 0.88 pm 0.02 Rsun and a superficial temperature of 5250pm80 K. These parameters combined with the orbital characteristics of the binary suggest that the system is observed at a very low inclination angle (~8 deg -14 deg) and that the star is filling or even overflowing its Roche Lobe. This, together with the equivalent width of the Halpha emission (~20 Ang), suggest possible on-going mass transfer. The possibile presence of such a on-going mass transfer during a quiescence state also suggests that the radio pulsar is not active yet and thus this system, despite its similarity with the class of redback millisecond pulsars, is not a transitional millisecond pulsar., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. We used data from the HST UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters to select the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population in four intermediate/high density systems (namely NGC 2808, NGC 6388, NGC 6541 and NGC 7078) through a "UV-guided search". This procedure consists in using the F275W images in each cluster to construct the master list of detected sources, and then force it to the images acquired in the other filters. Such an approach optimizes the detection of relatively hot stars and allows the detection of complete sample of BSSs even in the central region of high-density clusters, because the light from the bright cool giants, which dominates the optical emission in old stellar systems, is sensibly reduced at UV wavelengths. Our UV-guided selections of BSSs have been compared to the samples obtained in previous, optical-driven surveys, clearly demonstrating the efficiency of the UV approach. In each cluster we also measured the parameter A+, defined as the area enclosed between the cumulative radial distribution of BSSs and that of a reference population, which traces the level of BSS central segregation and the level of dynamical evolution suffered by the system. By exploiting two ACS/HST datasets separated by a temporal baseline of ~7 years, we have determined the relative stellar proper motions (providing membership) and the absolute proper motion of the Galactic globular cluster M71. The absolute proper motion has been used to reconstruct the cluster orbit within a Galactic, three-component, axisymmetric potential. M71 turns out to be in a low latitude disk-like orbit inside the Galactic disk, further supporting the scenario in which it lost a significant fraction of its initial mass. Since large differential reddening is known to affect this system, we took advantage of near-infrared, ground-based observations to re-determine the cluster center and density profile from direct star counts. The new structural parameters turn out to be significantly different from the ones quoted in the literature. In particular, M71 has a core and a half-mass radii almost 50% larger than previously thought. Finally we estimate that the initial mass of M71 was likely one order of magnitude larger than its current value, thus helping to solve the discrepancy with the observed number of X-ray sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Ground-based imagers at 8m class telescopes assisted by Multi conjugate Adaptive Optics are primary facilities to obtain accurate photometry and proper motions in dense stellar fields. We observed the central region of the globular clusters Liller 1 and NGC 6624 with the Gemini Multi-conjugate adaptive optics System (GeMS) feeding the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) currently available at the Gemini South telescope, under different observing conditions. We characterized the stellar Point Spread Function (PSF) in terms of Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), Strehl Ratio (SR) and Encircled Energy (EE), over the field of view. We found that, for sub-arcsec seeing at the observed airmass, diffraction limit PSF FWHM ($\approx$ 80 mas), SR $\sim40\%$ and EE $\ge50\%$ with a dispersion around $10\%$ over the 85" x 85" field of view, can be obtained in the $K_s$ band. In the $J$ band the best images provide FWHMs between 60 and 80 mas, SR $>10\%$ and EE $>40\%$. For seeing at the observed airmass exceeding 1", the performance worsen but it is still possible to perform PSF fitting photometry with $25\%$ EE in $J$ and $40\%$ in $K_s$. We also computed the geometric distortions of GeMS/GSAOI and we obtained corrected images with an astrometric accuracy of $\sim$1 mas in a stellar field with high crowding., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We used ultra-deep $J$ and $K_s$ images secured with the near-infrared GSAOI camera assisted by the multi-conjugate adaptive optics system GeMS at the GEMINI South Telescope in Chile, to obtain a ($K_s$, $J-K_s$) color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for the bulge globular cluster NGC 6624. We obtained the deepest and most accurate near-infrared CMD from the ground for this cluster, by reaching $K_s$ $\sim$ 21.5, approximately 8 magnitudes below the horizontal branch level. The entire extension of the Main Sequence (MS) is nicely sampled and at $K_s$ $\sim$ 20 we detected the so-called MS "knee" in a purely near-infrared CMD. By taking advantage of the exquisite quality of the data, we estimated the absolute age of NGC 6624 ($t_{age}$ = 12.0 $\pm$ 0.5 Gyr), which turns out to be in good agreement with previous studies in the literature. We also analyzed the luminosity and mass functions of MS stars down to M $\sim$ 0.45 M$_{\odot}$ finding evidence of a significant increase of low-mass stars at increasing distances from the cluster center. The Galactic bulge is dominated by an old, metal rich stellar population. The possible presence and the amount of a young (a few Gyr old) minor component is one of the major issues debated in the literature. Recently, the bulge stellar system Terzan 5 was found to harbor three sub-populations with iron content varying by more than one order of magnitude (from 0.2 up to 2 times the solar value), with chemical abundance patterns strikingly similar to those observed in bulge field stars. Here we report on the detection of two distinct main sequence turn-off points in Terzan 5, providing the age of the two main stellar populations: 12 Gyr for the (dominant) sub-solar component and 4.5 Gyr for the component at super-solar metallicity. This discovery classifies Terzan 5 as a site in the Galactic bulge where multiple bursts of star formation occurred, thus suggesting a quite massive progenitor possibly resembling the giant clumps observed in star forming galaxies at high redshifts. We present an observational estimate of the fraction and distribution of dark mass in the innermost region of the two Galactic globular clusters NGC 6218 (M12) and NGC 288. Such an assessment has been made by comparing the dynamical and luminous mass profiles derived from an accurate analysis of the most extensive spectroscopic and photometric surveys performed on these stellar systems. We find that non-luminous matter constitutes more than 60% of the total mass in the region probed by our data (R<1.6 arcmin~r_h) in both clusters. We have carefully analyzed the effects of binaries and tidal heating on our estimate and ruled out the possibility that our result is a spurious consequence of these effects. The dark component appears to be more concentrated than the most massive stars suggesting that it is likely composed of dark remnants segregated in the cluster core., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

We used a combination of optical and near-UV Hubble Space Telescope photometry and FLAMES/ESO-VLT high-resolution spectroscopy to characterize the stellar content of the old and massive globular cluster (GC) NGC121 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We report on the detection of multiple stellar populations, the first case in the SMC stellar cluster system. This result enforces the emerging scenario in which the presence of multiple stellar populations is a distinctive-feature of old and massive GCs regardless of the environment, as far as the light element distribution is concerned. We find that second population (SG) stars are more centrally concentrated than first (FG) ones. More interestingly, at odds with what typically observed in Galactic GCs, we find that NGC121 is the only cluster so far to be dominated by FG stars that account for more than 65% of the total cluster mass. In the framework where GCs were born with a 90-95% of FG stars, this observational finding would suggest that either NGC121 experienced a milder stellar mass-loss with respect to Galactic GCs or it formed a smaller fraction of SG stars., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We derived chemical abundances for C, N, O, Na, Mg and Al in 20 asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the globular cluster NGC 6752. All these elements (but Mg) show intrinsic star-to-star variations and statistically significant correlations or anticorrelations analogous to those commonly observed in red giant stars of globular clusters hosting multiple populations. This demonstrates that, at odds with previous findings, both first and second generation stars populate the AGB of NGC 6752. The comparison with the Na abundances of red giant branch stars in the same cluster reveals that second generation stars (with mild Na and He enrichment) do reach the AGB phase. The only objects that are not observed along the AGB of NGC 6752 are stars with extreme Na enhancement. This is also consistent with standard stellar evolution models, showing that highly Na and He enriched stars populate the bluest portion of the horizontal branch and, because of their low stellar masses, evolve directly to the white dwarf cooling sequence, skipping the AGB phase., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJL, 11 pages, 3 figures and 1 table

We present the first measure of Fe and Na abundances in NGC 6362, a low-mass globular cluster where first and second generation stars are fully spatially mixed. A total of 160 member stars (along the red giant branch and the red horizontal branch) have been observed with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope. We find that the cluster has an iron abundance of [Fe/H]=--1.09$\pm$0.01 dex, without evidence of intrinsic dispersion. On the other hand, the [Na/Fe] distribution turns out to be intrinsically broad and bimodal. The Na-poor and Na-rich stars populate, respectively, the bluest and the reddest red giant branches detected in the color-magnitude diagrams including the U filter. The red giant branch is composed of a mixture of first and second generation stars in a similar proportion, while almost all the red horizontal branch stars belong to the first cluster generation. Globular clusters are known to host peculiar objects, named Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs), significantly heavier than the normal stellar population. While these stars can be easily identified during their core hydrogen-burning phase, they are photometrically indistinguishable from their low-mass sisters in advanced stages of the subsequent evolution. A clear-cut identification of these objects would require the direct measurement of the stellar mass. We used the detailed comparison between chemical abundances derived from neutral and from ionized spectral lines as a powerful stellar "weighing device" to measure stellar mass and to identify an evolved BSS in 47 Tucanae. In particular, high-resolution spectra of three bright stars located slightly above the level of the "canonical" horizontal branch sequence in the color-magnitude diagram of 47 Tucanae, have been obtained with UVES spectrograph. The measurements of iron and titanium abundances performed separately from neutral and ionized lines reveal that two targets have stellar parameters fully consistent with those expected for low-mass post-horizontal branch objects, while for the other target the elemental ionization balance is obtained only by assuming a mass of ~1.4Msol, which is significantly larger than the main sequence turn-off mass of the cluster (~0.85 Msol). The comparison with theoretical stellar tracks suggests that this is a BSS descendant possibly experiencing its core helium-burning phase. The large applicability of the proposed method to most of the globular clusters in our Galaxy opens the possibility to initiate systematic searches for evolved BSSs, thus giving access to still unexplored phases of their evolution., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

We have collected UVES-FLAMES high-resolution spectra for a sample of 6 asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and 13 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster M62 (NGC6266). Here we present the detailed abundance analysis of iron, titanium, and light-elements (O, Na, Al and Mg). For the majority (5 out 6) of the AGB targets we find that the abundances, of both iron and titanium, determined from neutral lines are significantly underestimated with respect to those obtained from ionized features, the latter being, instead, in agreement with those measured for the RGB targets. This is similar to recent findings in other clusters and may suggest the presence of Non-Local Thermodynamical Equilibrium (NLTE) effects. In the O-Na, Al-Mg and Na-Al planes, the RGB stars show the typical correlations observed for globular cluster stars. Instead, all the AGB targets are clumped in the regions where first generation stars are expected to lie, similarly to what recently found for the AGB population of NGC6752. While the sodium and aluminum abundance could be underestimated as a consequence of the NLTE bias affecting iron and titanium, the used oxygen line does not suffer from the same effects and the lack of O-poor AGB stars therefore is solid. We can thus conclude that none of the investigated AGB stars belong to the second stellar generation of M62. We used ultra-deep UV observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope to search for optical companions to binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We identified four new counterparts (to MSPs 47TucQ, 47TucS, 47TucT and 47TucY) and confirmed those already known (to MSPs 47TucU and 47TucW). In the color magnitude diagram, the detected companions are located in a region between the main sequence and the CO white dwarf cooling sequences, consistent with the cooling tracks of He white dwarfs of mass between 0.15 Msun and 0.20 Msun. For each identified companion, mass, cooling age, temperature and pulsar mass (as a function of the inclination angle) have been derived and discussed. For 47TucU we also found that the past accretion history likely proceeded in a sub-Eddington rate. The companion to the redback 47TucW is confirmed to be a non degenerate star, with properties particularly similar to those observed for black widow systems. Two stars have been identified within the 2-sigma astrometric uncertainty from the radio positions of 47TucH and 47TucI, but the available data prevent us from firmly assessing whether they are the true companions of these two MSPs., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication by ApJ
