2. Ring-opening polymerization of functionalized aliphatic bicyclic carbonates

Abstract

A series of six-membered bicyclic carbonates has been prepared from an alcohol precursor through esterification, etherification and silyl-etherification methods to afford functional monomers with synthetically useful vinyl, allyl, alkynyl and polymerizable groups that allow for orthogonal polymerization strategies. Anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) of these monomers allows us to access densely functional aliphatic polycarbonates with Mn's and Tg's in the range of 3.2-11.7 kg mol-1 and 11-106 degrees C, respectively. Bifunctional monomers comprising two separate polymerizable groups can be selectively polymerized via AROP or radical based/ring-opening metathesis polymerization methods. Selected polycarbonates were post-modified via thiol-ene chemistry to further modulate their properties. Finally, base-mediated depolymerization of these new polycarbonates was attempted giving rise to an unusual bicyclic oxetane product, which may be upcycled through appropriate copolymerization methods.The development of new functional polycarbonates through ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic precursors is described.

15. On the importance of domain adaptation in texture classification

Abstract

Texture classification algorithms require generalization abilities in order to be reliably used in real world applications. This paper casts this problem in the domain adaptation setting and presents the first study investigating (a) up to which extent this visual recognition problem suffers from this issue, and (b) the effectiveness of existing domain adaptation algorithms in mitigating it. We focus on domain adaptation methods based on shallow classifiers, and test their performance on deep and non deep features. Results obtained on a newly created domain adaptation texture setup show the superiority of deep features compared to other well known approaches, and highlights the importance of factoring in the domain shift when dealing with textures in the wild.

Abstract

Polythiophene copolymers containing alkyl side chains of different length and partially functionalized with chromophoric groups have been synthesized by FeCl3 oxidative coupling of 3-alkylthiophenes and functionalized 3-alkylthiophenes. Composition, molecular weigth and configuration of the soluble fraction of the copolymers have been investigated and some structure-property correlations have been evidenced.

Abstract

A method of synthesis leading to poly(3-alkylthiophene)s with two different functional groups in the side chain, one of which is an NLO-active chromophore, has been developed. This method, based on the post-functionalization of a reactive homopolymeric precursor, permits to prepare different polyfunctional polymers that are fully soluble in the most commonly used organic solvents. The procedure is very easy to perform, cost-effective, highly versatile and reproducible.

Abstract

The study we present is aimed at evaluating the efficacy of a child sexual abuse prevention program that involved children attending 4th and 5th grade in Milan's (Italy) elementary schools. The project involved 53 classes (10 of 4th, 43 of 5th grade) during school year 2000-2001. Children filled a questionnaire before the beginning of the project and two months after the end; the questionnaire evaluates children's perception of risk and their self-efficacy skills in adopting protective strategies when involved in at risk situations. Final analysis has involved 674 children, 51.8% girls, 48.2% boys; 19.6% of children attended 4th grade, 80.4% 5th grade. Percentage of children that recognize the potential danger in the suggested at-risk situation is higher in post-test then in pre-test (87.9% vs 73.2%) and the number of them that does not adopt any self-defence strategy decreases (from 35.3% to 21.0%). The project increased the number of children that know body puberal changes (from 16.0% to 32.8%). According to these results it is evident that the program increased children's capacity to recognize and use self defence strategies in at risk situations. These results call for a potential extention and replication of this health education program.

Abstract

A thiophene-based conjugated polymer bearing a cyano group (–CN) as a side chain substituent was successfully synthesized. The polymer evidences an excellent filmability from various organic solvents as well as an enhanced photoluminescence. The polymer has been characterized optically (Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy, absorption and photoluminescence) in solution and in film, while X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD) of thin films were performed to investigate its bulk morphological features. From the absorption edge of the spectrum of a thin polymer film, the optical band gap of the polymer is estimated to be 2.0 eV, which corresponds to orange emission. Furthermore, a single layer light emitting diode (LED) was fabricated. The device produced bright stable electroluminescence at room temperature. 43. Completely Soluble Azo-Dye-Substituted Thiophenic Copolymers through Proper Molecular Design

Abstract

Copolymerizations at various feed ratios between azo-dye-substituted thiophenes and 3-hexylthiophene under FeCl3-based oxidative conditions have been conducted. It is shown that when the molecular structure of the dye is properly designed, completely soluble copolymers, with molecular weigths ranging around 104 as Mn and dye-substituted monomer content up to 50% in a molar ratio, may be prepared, as well as a completely soluble homopolymer. In addition, the so-obtained polymers evidenced excellent filmability from a variety of solvents. The dye-substituted monomer content of the soluble copolymers has been assessed by 1H NMR analysis via a convenient choice of the reference signals. In the completely soluble copolymers the dye-substituted monomer content is well correlated to the feed within a range between 0 and 75% of dye-substituted unit in the feed, which corresponds to a 0−50% range in the copolymer composition, still conserving satisfactory molecular weights. Following these observations and analyzing the characteristics of the polymers, a lower reactivity of the dye-functionalized unit toward 3-hexylthiophene was evidenced in the used reaction conditions, and some hypotheses on this finding are presented.

44. Investigation on Different Procedures in the Oxidative Copolymerization of a Dye-Functionalized Thiophene with 3-Hexylthiophene

Abstract

For the purpose of preparing materials for nonlinear optics applications, a 3-ethylthiophene bearing an NLO-active chromophoric group as a substituent at the end of the ethylic chain was copolymerized with 3-hexylthiophene. Different FeCl3-based oxidative polymerization conditions in solvents such as CH3NO2 and CCl4 and their effects on the copolymers characteristics and solubility in CHCl3 (i.e., the copolymer's soluble fraction) were examined. This work allowed to achieve a satisfactory chloroform-soluble fraction of the copolymer, still containing a notable amount of NLO-active group, and to tune to some extent the main characteristics of the copolymer; moreover, the behavior of the monomers−solvent−oxidant system was investigated.

Abstract

A full 1H and 1C NMR study through the use of one- and two-dimensional techniques (HMQC, HMBC, TOCSY and NOE-difference spectroscopy) was carried out on poly[3-(6-methoxyhexyl)-2,2'-bithiophene]. Inter-ring correlations detected in the HMBC spectra proved to be a valuable tool in the assignment of regiochemistry. NMR data can be interpreted on the basis of a four-triad model.
