Sociology as an academic discipline has always undergone change and modification in theory, method and substance. This article addresses some of the changes in many substantive area of sociology. Some special aspects that have characterized American sociology was discussed. The diversity in styles of sociological work was recognized. In order to provide a broader context for sociological work, it is necessary to go back to the turn of the century,a period of marked social change in America. There are two major influence on how academic sociology would respond to change the development of pragmatism in American philosophy and sociologists' belief in empiricism.There are some similarities between the concerns of European sociologists of the last century and the American sociologists of the early decades of the century.

In this article the reader seeks a clarification from the editor. Daniel Kubat's very fair review of the book, "Marriage: An Examination of the Man-Woman Relationship" is unclear on one point. The statement "drawing from the practice of marriage counseling, the authors offer 19 short chapters" is unintentionally misleading since it conveys the impression that the book is based on the marriage counseling experiences of the writers. Hopefully, the experiences of the writers help enrich the text material. As has been pointed out in several reviews, however, the book is heavily documented with findings from research in the behavioral sciences.
