Abstract

The role of transactional factors, organizational and strategic characteristics, and risk factors in human resources outsourcing in Canadian companies is investigated. Findings indicate that top managers' support, experience in outsourcing, human resource benchmarking are positively associated with human resource outsourcing. The key drivers of a decision made by a company to outsource are also discussed.

We explore the effect of extended shopping hours on the demand faced by small and large stores and on their prices. Our theoretical model predicts that prices at large stores will increase after opening hours are deregulated. We then test this prediction using a set of Quebec data collected before and after the deregulation of opening hours in July 1990. The results support our view that prices have increased at large stores since deregulation and that consumers pay for greater shopping flexibility., I. The government set several health and safety standards to reduce the growing number of workplace accidents and worker's compensation claims. To further promote occupational health and safety, a set of policies concerning accident tax and safety bonus schemes were created. Analysis of the effects of accident tax and safety bonus plans revealed conflicting results. Analysts claim that although the plans are theoritically effective, its practical feasibility is questionable.

Abstract

A model which integrates substitution between unemployment insurance benefits and workers' compensation is presented. The model focuses on an extension of earlier studies involving post-injury duration of absence from work and develops a situation wherein a worker can optimize expected utility under four conditions. Results show that increased workers' compensation benefits generate related increases on the average duration of accidents given elasticity conditions from 0.9 to 1.4.

Canadian wine and liquor distributor Societe des Alcools du Quebec gained safety benefits and reduced its expenses when it implemented a workplace accident prevention program. It changed its conveyor-centered system to one which combined the use of pallets, shelving facilities, pallet trucks, forklifts and an automatic pallet distributor. The new system enabled the firm to reduce shipment errors, bottle breaks, labor costs and costs related to accidents common before its implementation.

Abstract

On estime que, chaque année, la population mondiale utilise 1,5 fois les ressources renouvelables de la planète. Cette tendance ne peut aller qu'en s'accentuant, alors que les classes moyennes partout prennent de l'ampleur et que la pauvreté extrême diminue. Dans ce contexte, l'économie circulaire suscite un intérêt grandissant des citoyens, des entrepreneurs, des gouvernements, ainsi que du monde universitaire. Pour éviter l'épuisement des ressources naturelles, cette économie de « demain » propose l'intensification du recyclage - voire la fin des déchets -, la gestion durable des ressources, des politiques collectives encadrant la production, ainsi que l'usage des biens et des services plutôt que des politiques privées favorisant la propriété et la croissance illimitée. Ce livre, écrit sous l’égide de Institut de l’environnement, du développement durable et de l’économie circulaire (EDDEC), présente les réflexions de 50 experts, notamment en environnement, en génie industriel ou chimique, en management, mais aussi en économie, en géographie, en anthropologie et en philosophie.
