2. A Sparse Fast Chebyshev Transform for High-Dimensional Approximation

We present the Fast Chebyshev Transform (FCT), a fast, randomized algorithm to compute a Chebyshev approximation of functions in high-dimensions from the knowledge of the location of its nonzero Chebyshev coefficients. Rather than sampling a full-resolution Chebyshev grid in each dimension, we randomly sample several grids with varied resolutions and solve a least-squares problem in coefficient space in order to compute a polynomial approximating the function of interest across all grids simultaneously. We theoretically and empirically show that the FCT exhibits quasi-linear scaling and high numerical accuracy on challenging and complex high-dimensional problems. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared to alternative Chebyshev approximation schemes. In particular, we highlight our algorithm's effectiveness in high dimensions, demonstrating significant speedups over commonly-used alternative techniques.

3. An Efficient Framework for Global Non-Convex Polynomial Optimization over the Hypercube

We present a novel efficient theoretical and numerical framework for solving global non-convex polynomial optimization problems. We analytically demonstrate that such problems can be efficiently reformulated using a non-linear objective over a convex set; further, these reformulated problems possess no spurious local minima (i.e., every local minimum is a global minimum). We introduce an algorithm for solving these resulting problems using the augmented Lagrangian and the method of Burer and Monteiro. We show through numerical experiments that polynomial scaling in dimension and degree is achievable for computing the optimal value and location of previously intractable global polynomial optimization problems in high dimension.

The ever increasing demands placed upon machine performance have resulted in the need for more comprehensive particle accelerator modeling. Computer simulations are key to the success of particle accelerators. Many aspects of particle accelerators rely on computer modeling at some point, sometimes requiring complex simulation tools and massively parallel supercomputing. Examples include the modeling of beams at extreme intensities and densities (toward the quantum degeneracy limit), and with ultra-fine control (down to the level of individual particles). In the future, adaptively tuned models might also be relied upon to provide beam measurements beyond the resolution of existing diagnostics. Much time and effort has been put into creating accelerator software tools, some of which are highly successful. However, there are also shortcomings such as the general inability of existing software to be easily modified to meet changing simulation needs. In this paper possible mitigating strategies are discussed for issues faced by the accelerator community as it endeavors to produce better and more comprehensive modeling tools. This includes lack of coordination between code developers, lack of standards to make codes portable and/or reusable, lack of documentation, among others., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure. The application of the Dirac operator on a spinor field, the Dslash operation, is the most computation-intensive part of the lattice QCD simulations. It is often the key kernel to optimize to achieve maximum performance on various platforms. Here we report on a project to optimize the domain wall fermion Dirac operator in Columbia Physics System (CPS) using the R-Stream source-to-source compiler. Our initial target platform is the Intel PC clusters. We discuss the optimization strategies involved before and after the automatic code generation with R-Stream and present some preliminary benchmark results., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. This contribution discusses the automatic generation of event-driven, tuple-space based programs for task-oriented execution models from a sequential C specification. We developed a hierarchical mapping solution using auto-parallelizing compiler technology to target three different runtimes relying on event-driven tasks (EDTs). Our solution benefits from the important observation that loop types encode short, transitive relations among EDTs that are compact and efficiently evaluated at runtime. In this context, permutable loops are of particular importance as they translate immediately into conservative point-to-point synchronizations of distance 1. Our solution generates calls into a runtime-agnostic C++ layer, which we have retargeted to Intel's Concurrent Collections (CnC), ETI's SWARM, and the Open Community Runtime (OCR). Experience with other runtime systems motivates our introduction of support for hierarchical async-finishes in CnC. Experimental data is provided to show the benefit of automatically generated code for EDT-based runtimes as well as comparisons across runtimes.

9. New Paradigms for Computer Aids to Invention.

- Abstract
Many people are interested in computer aids to rhetorical invention and want to know how to evaluate an invention aid, what the criteria are for a good one, and how to assess the trade-offs involved in buying one product or another. The frame of reference for this evaluation is an "old paradigm," which treats the computer as if it were paper, but new paradigm aids should be based on the uniquely electronic strengths of computers. As more and more people use computers as a primary means of creating texts, electronic media are also changing how information is being created. Commercial software offers a potential source of new technological paradigms. For instance, the emphasis on the fluidity of information in electronic forms means that information is more malleable; parts of one electronic document can become parts of another. Other technological developments that may have promise for computer aids to invention are simulation, interactive videodiscs, advanced workstations such as the IBM PC RT and the software that runs on them, and interactive computer games. In terms of invention theory, new paradigms might be found Walter Ong's "secondary orality" and Herbert Simon's and others' work on artificial intelligence. This frame of reference should aid in creating the tools that are the promise of computer aids to rhetorical invention. (SRT)

- Abstract
Part of the Communications Design Center's (CDC) on-going research on communication and document design, this report emphasizes the importance of a multi-level computer help system that goes beyond simple command descriptions to include assistance with goals and strategies within the application domain--in this case, automated authoring. The help system should be dynamic to at least some degree, basing its presentation of help options on the user's current activity. It is also suggested that an adequate help system would include both a mechanism for controlling the amount of information presented on a help request and an interactive facility to allow users to try out different features in a procedural fashion. Finally, the textual information contained in the help database must be carefully designed and structured to make the necessary assistance both accessible and understandable for maximum user efficiency. An introductory discussion of computer-based instruction (CBI) is followed by five sections: Defining the Audience; Prototype Help Systems; Factors in the Design of Help (Dynamism and Access); Information Requirements (Level of Explanation, Amount of Information Presented, Level of Detail, Categories of Information, and Tutorials); and An Evaluation of a Help System. A summary and a 42-item reference list complete the report. (THC)

11. Invention Aids for Computer-Based Writing: Expanding the Horizons through Collaborative Invention.

- Abstract
"Cognoter(tm)" and "CB" software, two new computer-based writing tools that rely on shared texts and real-time communication among participants and support collaborative invention, have implications for invention pedagogy and research. Cognoter improves on current invention aids by combining a brainstorming tool, a graphical linking tool, and an outlining tool. An aid designed for use by groups to further the collaborative development of presentations, Cognoter can also suggest new heuristics that might become the basis for invention aids. While not explicitly oriented to supporting inventional activities, CB software essentially allows users to send each other messages in real time via a network. CB's social, conversation-based approach offers several potential benefits for invention pedagogy: (1) it provides a naturalistic setting for introducing formalized heuristics; (2) with the teachers online, the use of more advanced techniques can be demonstrated in context; and (3) new heuristics could grow out of online conversations. Collaborative tools such as Cognoter and CB may make inventional activities more explicit, and may also reveal that the inventional behavior of groups is different from that of an individual. However, researchers must be careful in interpreting the large body of data generated by these collaborative invention tools. (JD)

A prototype silicon microstrip detector for the GEM general purpose detector proposed for the Super Collider was assembled and tested in the laboratory with radioactive sources and an IR-Laser, and at SLAC in a 25 GeV electron beam. The system was designed for performance in the GEM environment: 60 MHz bunch crossing at [10.sup.33] luminosity with inner barrel occupancies of 0.16%. Signals from the strips were amplified by custom designed high-speed, low-power, low-noise, low-mass, integrated microelectronics. The mechanical design of the GEM tracker motivated the selection of long (18 cm) strip lengths (achieved by wire-bonding three 6 cm long detectors). Evaluation of the test beam and laboratory results demonstrate the feasibility of this approach.

We nonconstructively prove the existence of decision algorithms with low-degree polynomial running times for a number of well-studied graph layout, placement, and routing problems. Some were not previously known to be in p at all; others were only known to be in p by way of brute force or dynamic programming formulations with unboundedly high-degree polynomial running times. Our methods include the application of the recent Robertson-Seymour theorems on the well-partial-ordering of graphs under both the minor and immersion orders. We also briefly address the complexity of search versions of these problems.

35. Lifetime Body Weight Trajectories and Risk of Kidney Cancer: A Large US Prospective Cohort Study.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate kidney cancer risk in relation to the body mass index (BMI) trajectory and cumulative exposure to excess weight. Methods: We identified several anthropometric metrics to capture the lifetime BMI patterns from the prospective Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. These measures included BMI at specific ages (age 20 years, 50 years, and age at completing the baseline questionnaire), BMI trajectory from age 20 to baseline, cumulative exposure to overweight/obesity from age 20 to baseline, and weight change during each age span. The BMI trajectory was identified using the latent class trajectory model. The cumulative exposure, which was quantified by weighted years of living with overweight/obesity (WYO), was obtained by summing up the excess BMI (BMI-25, set to 0 when BMI < 25) across ages. Cox proportional hazards regression, adjusting for age, sex, randomization arm, race, education, smoking, aspirin use, history of hypertension and diabetes, was conducted to quantify the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association between each anthropometric metric and incident kidney cancer. Results: During a median follow-up of 11.5 years, incident kidney cancers were diagnosed in 391 men and 223 women. A higher BMI at age 20, 50, and baseline was associated with a greater hazard of kidney cancer. Compared to individuals who retained normal BMI throughout adulthood, an increased hazard of kidney cancer was observed for individuals who progressed from normal BMI to overweight (HR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.15,1.73), from normal BMI to obesity (HR: 2.02, 95% CI: 1.57, 2.58), and from overweight to obesity (HR: 2.79, 95% CI: 1.88,4.13). Compared to individuals who were never overweight (WYO = 0), elevated HRs were observed among individuals who experienced low (HR: 1.22, 95% CI: 0.94, 1.57), medium (HR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.15,1.87), and high (HR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.51, 2.43) level of WYO (tertiles of WYO above 0). Weight gain of =10 kg was positively associated with kidney cancer incidence for each age span. Conclusions: Being overweight in early adulthood, weight gain in later life, and higher cumulative exposure to excess weight over the lifespan were all associated with increased risk of kidney cancer. Based on a sample of approximately 500,000 hadronic Z0 decays accumulated between 1993 and 1998, the SLD experiment has set limits on 24 fully charged two-body and quasi two-body exclusive charmless hadronic decays of B+, B0, and B0_s mesons. The precise tracking capabilities of the SLD detector provided for the efficient reduction of combinatoric backgrounds, yielding the most precise available limits for ten of these modes., Comment: LaTex, 11 pages, 2 figures, uses RevTeX. The parity violation parameters Ab and Ac of the Zbb¯ and Zcc¯ couplings have been measured directly, using the polar angle dependence of the Z0-pole polarized cross sections. Bottom and charmed hadrons were tagged via semileptonic decays. Both the muon and electron identification algorithms take advantage of new multivariate techniques, incorporating for the first time information from the SLD Čerenkov Ring Imaging Detector. Based on the 1993–1995 SLD sample of 150 000 Z0 decays produced with highly polarized electron beams, we measure Ab=0.910±0.068(stat)±0.037(syst), Ac=0.642±0.110(stat)±0.063(syst).
