5. Mountain building and the initiation of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Abstract

The effects of a new hypothesis about mountain building in Greenland on ice sheet initiation are investigated using an ice sheet model in combination with a climate model. According to this hypothesis, low-relief landscapes near sea level characterised Greenland in Miocene times until two phases of km-scale uplift in the late Miocene and in the latest Miocene–Pliocene (beginning at 10 and ~5 Ma, respectively) initiated the formation of the present-day mountains. The topography of Greenland, prior to these uplift events is reconstructed from the present-day, isostatically compensated bedrock by mapping the two main steps in the landscape that resulted from the two uplift phases. Ice sheet initiation is studied using the topography before uplift and after each phase of uplift by applying different forcing conditions relevant for the late Cenozoic, which was characterised by long-term cooling superimposed by cold and warm excursions. The modelling results show that no ice initiates in the case of the low-lying and almost flat topography prior to the uplifts. However, the results demonstrate a significant ice sheet growth in response to the orographically induced increase in precipitation and the cooling of surface temperatures accompanying the uplift. Large amounts of ice are able to formafter the first uplift event, but the ice sheet is sensitive to changes in climate. The results showthat the second phase of uplift facilitates ice sheet build-up further and increases the stability of the ice sheet by providing anchoring points which are not available to the same extent in the lower topographies. However, the results also reveal a Föhn effect that inhibits ice sheet expansion into the interior Greenland and thus shifts the threshold of formation of inland ice towards colder temperatures. Abstract

Efforts to extract a Greenland ice core with a complete record of the Eemian interglacial (130,000 to 115,000 years ago) have until now been unsuccessful. The response of the Greenland ice sheet to the warmer-than-present climate of the Eemian has thus remained unclear. Here we present the new North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling ('NEEM') ice core and show only a modest ice-sheet response to the strong warming in the early Eemian. We reconstructed the Eemian record from folded ice using globally homogeneous parameters known from dated Greenland and Antarctic ice-core records. On the basis of water stable isotopes, NEEM surface temperatures after the onset of the Eemian (126,000 years ago) peaked at 8 ± 4 degrees Celsius above the mean of the past millennium, followed by a gradual cooling that was probably driven by the decreasing summer insolation. Between 128,000 and 122,000 years ago, the thickness of the northwest Greenland ice sheet decreased by 400 ± 250 metres, reaching surface elevations 122,000 years ago of 130 ± 300 metres lower than the present. Extensive surface melt occurred at the NEEM site during the Eemian, a phenomenon witnessed when melt layers formed again at NEEM during the exceptional heat of July 2012. With additional warming, surface melt might become more common in the future.

8. Self-inhibiting growth of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Abstract

The build-up of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) from ice-free conditions is studied in an ice sheet model (ISM) driven by fields from an atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) to demonstrate the importance of coupling between the two components. Experiments where the two are coupled off-line are augmented by one where an intermediate ice sheet configuration is coupled back to the GCM. Forcing the ISM with GCM fields corresponding to the ice-free state leads to extensive regrowth which, however, is halted when the intermediate recoupling step is included. This inhibition of further growth is due to a Föhn effect of moist air parcels being lifted over the intermediate ice sheet and arriving in the low-lying Greenland interior with high temperatures. This demonstrates that two-way coupling between the atmosphere and the ice sheet is essential for understanding the dynamics and that large scale conditions cooler than those of today may be necessary for the GrIS to regrow to the present volume

14. Response in atmospheric circulation and sources of Greenland precipitation to glacial boundary conditions

Abstract

The response in northern hemisphere atmospheric circulation and the resulting changes in moisture sources for Greenland precipitation to glacial boundary conditions are studied in NCAR's CCM3 atmospheric general circulation model fitted with a moisture tracking functionality. We employ both the CLIMAP SST reconstruction and a modification thereto with reconstructions of glacial ice sheets and land masks. The individual components of the boundary conditions are added first one at a time and, finally, together. These steps show the atmospheric circulation to respond approximately linearly to the boundary condition changes, and the full glacial change may thus be decomposed into contributions from SST and topography changes, respectively. We find that using the CLIMAP SST reconstruction leads to a shift from Atlantic toward Pacific source regions not found with the modified reconstruction having cooler tropics and less sea ice. The occurrence of such a shift depends chiefly on the SST reconstruction and not on the existence of the large northern hemisphere glacial ice sheets. The influence of these circulation changes on important factors for ice core interpretation such as precipitation seasonality, condensation temperatures and source temperatures are assessed. Jordens globale middeltemperatur er bestemt af energistrømme mellem Jorden og verdensrummet, mens kontrasten mellem varme og kolde områder er bestemt af energiudvekslinger inden for klimasystemet, fx mellem høje og lave breddegrader, og mellem land, hav og atmosfæren. Således vil ændringer i Jordens samlede evne til at absorbere energi fra solen eller udstråle den igen kunne føre til klimaændringer, men om det fører til geografisk jævn opvarming (eller afkøling) afhænger af, hvordan de interne energistrømme reagerer på ændringen. I denne artikel vil vi bl.a. beskrive, hvordan temperaturændringer typisk vil være mest udtalt på høje breddegrader. Et fænomen, der i klimafagsprog kaldes polar forstærkning (på engelsk polar amplification).
