The article discusses the importance of programmed instruction. It is considered to be a developing technology of teaching. Educators are required to understand the importance of programmed instruction. It requires the experience, the sense of curricular balance and the practical approach of school leaders and curriculum developers. Though it is in its early stage, it has much to offer. If it is properly nurtured, it is going to be very fruitful in the future. The approach of teaching helps educators and pupils in various ways. It compels educators to reexamine the learning process. In the programming techniques of programmed instruction, the principle of reinforcement has been incorporated by behavioral psychologists. Programmed instruction requires the application, intelligence, and practical demands of teachers to keep it flexible and available to explore and take shape in many usable forms.

This article focuses on the five-day history of one of the discussion groups participating in the Northwest Regional Conference of ASCD that was held at the State College of Washington, Pullman, Washington, from July 28, 1947 to August 1, 1947. Four different leaders worked with the group on successive days. Two of these leaders were charged with developing continuity through the sessions. A keynote address on the theme "Ways of Working With People" was a feature of the first morning session of the conference and subsequent speakers re-emphasized the significance of group dynamics. Each discussion session had been, in itself, a demonstration of group method. The five discussions had been planned for persons who would be with the group for five days. A nucleus of about thirty administrators, supervisors, classroom teachers, and students were regular members throughout the week, but another seventy persons merely sampled the group. The printed conference program undoubtedly conditioned some who came to listen.

The supervisory program at the Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Va., described by Phil Lange, professor, New York State Teachers College, Fredonia; and Amo DeBernardis, supervisor, department of audio-visual education, Portland (Ore.) Public Schools, both of whom served at this station during the war, is illustrative of many excellent methods by which constructive supervision can be carried on in the field of civilian education with equal success.
