13. Longevity and Education: Survey Results, 2002.

Abstract

In order to better serve the needs of people in midlife and beyond, Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC), California, is considering the establishment of a Center for Longevity and Education (CLE). The CLE mission would be to foster a supportive environment for lifelong learning and life transitions for midlife and beyond, while channeling the knowledge and talents of older adults to support each other and the community through intergenerational activities on and off campus. The population of the United States is aging faster than it is growing, and at the same time seniors are more affluent than ever before. The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that the over-65 population will grow between two and two-and-a-half times over the next 40 years, to more than 70 million, and the population of those over 85 will triple to 9 million. To help develop a plan for the CLE, 3 focus groups were conducted at 3 local community/senior centers during a 2-week period, with 20 female and 5 male participants. In addition, 3,516 surveys were mailed to a random sample of 48-65 year olds with incomes of $75,000 or more, and 400 were returned for a response rate of 11.4%. This report includes survey results. 16. Improving Reading Strategies through the Use of Technology.

Abstract

This study describes an approach for enhancing reading strategies through the use of technology for improving reading comprehension and vocabulary. The targeted population consisted of middle school students in a growing low to middle class community, located in central Illinois. The problem of declining reading scores was evidenced in data reported in documents compiled by Illinois State University and Illinois State Board of Education, Local Criterion Reference Test, growing numbers of Title I students based on teacher referrals, and teacher observational checklists denoting levels of student reading style and habits. Analysis of probable cause data revealed that students reported a lack of skills related to comprehension and vocabulary, which can be broken into the four areas of management, curriculum, biological, and environmental. Faculty reported student inability to read for understanding at grade level in the different content areas. A review of solution strategies suggested by professional literature, combined with an analysis of the setting of the targeted schools, resulted in the selection of three major categories of intervention: utilization of reading strategies with a focus on comprehension and vocabulary, incorporation of appropriate software, and integration of reading strategies into other subject areas. The post intervention data indicated an increase in the reading scores of students after utilizing a variety of software applications that incorporated reading strategies across the curriculum. By integrating the technology with the reading strategies, students demonstrated a transfer of knowledge in all content areas. Contains 26 references, 10 figures and 4 tables of data. Abstract

The members of the research team are Abygail Wolff, Mary Lange, Spencer Norconk, and Loren Riddle, under supervision of Brady Wiggins, at BYU-Idaho. The original study, Moral Choice When Harming is Unavoidable, was done by Jonathan Z. Berman and Daniella Kupor in 2020: The specific study that is being replicated is study 1, "Pulling Life support from the terminally ill." This particular study was exploring the idea that most people avoid inflicting harm when there is an option to do no harm, and that individuals may be more willing to do greater harm for a greater benefit when harming is an unavoidable choice. They used the chi square test for their experiment. They found that the results of the study confirmed their hypothesis, and that participants were more likely to do greater harm where greater benefit was also a factor in unavoidable harm situations. We are conducting a replication of this study at Brigham Young University - Idaho, with our participants being students from the General Psychology Class. In our replication of the study we have added in one more hypothesis, We want to see if Gender may affect the individuals moral reasoning, this hypothesis won't affect the method as we are already gathering information on the participants gender. An individuals gender may have an impact on their personality and we want to see if that impact may affect their moral reasoning.

18. The Relationship between Perceived and Ideal Body Size and Body Mass Index in 3rd-Grade Low Socioeconomic Hispanic Children

Abstract

Very little is known about body satisfaction among minority children. This study examined the relationship between perceived and actual body size and Body Mass Index among 43 low-socioeconomic Hispanic 3rd-graders. Researchers measured participants' Body Mass Index; students self-reported Perceived Ideal Self Image and Perceived Actual Self Image using Collins' (1991) pictorial instrument scale of seven child body images that illustrate body weight from very thin to obese. The majority of students chose body images from the scale that depicted a healthy weight for both their Perceived Ideal Self Image and Perceived Actual Self Image. More boys than girls chose underweight as their Perceived Ideal Self Image. Thirty percent of the students were found to be overweight and 30 percent were at risk for being overweight. A small positive correlation between Perceived Actual Self Image and Body Mass Index was found. (Contains 4 tables and 1 figure.)

Abstract

Etanercept in addition to methotrexate may be more effective than methotrexate alone in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Etanercept is a drug that inhibits the action of tumor necrosis factor, which causes inflammation. Researchers randomly assigned 89 rheumatoid arthritis patients to take methotrexate alone or methotrexate and etanercept. After six months of treatment, 71% of the patients taking both drugs experienced a 20% improvement in function and 39% experienced a 50% improvement. The percentages of people taking methotrexate alone who achieved these results were 27% and 3%, respectively.
