Abstract This study aims to develop and validate a nomogram for predicting overall survival (OS) in Asian patients with Esophageal Cancer (EC). Data from Asian EC patients were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The patients were randomly divided into training and validation cohorts in a 7:3 ratio. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used for initial variable selection, followed by multivariate Cox regression analysis to identify independent prognostic factors. A nomogram was subsequently constructed based on these factors. The predictive performance of the nomogram was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and calibration curves, while the clinical utility of the nomogram was assessed through decision curve analysis (DCA). The LASSO regression and multivariate Cox regression analysis identified age, sex, marital status, tumor size, M stage, surgery, and chemotherapy as independent prognostic factors. The ROC curve results demonstrated that the area under the curve (AUC) values for predicting 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year OS in the training cohort were 0.770, 0.756, and 0.783, respectively. In the validation cohort, the AUC values were 0.814, 0.763, and 0.771, respectively. Calibration curves indicated a high concordance between predicted and actual OS. The DCA demonstrated that the nomogram has significant clinical applicability. This nomogram provides reliable predictions and valuable guidance for personalized survival estimates and high-risk patient identification.

The residential architecture atlases, chronicling the design motifs and craftsmanship of residences in Jiangnan during the Ming and Qing dynasties, serves as a cornerstone in deciphering the cultural metamorphosis and unearthing the subtle architectural essence specific to the region. With the advent of modern digital paradigms, this atlas has undergone a regeneration, evolving into a digital, real-time, and interactive embodiment of architectural lore. This study delves into the contents and characteristics of traditional and informational architectural atlases in Jiangnan during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It includes detailed surveys and mappings of the Mingyue Bay village in Suzhou, focusing on its geographic location, historical culture, and residential architectures. Utilizing AutoCAD and Photoshop, the study delineates the architectural plan atlas, elevation atlas, wooden frame atlas, and decoration atlas. It suggests regenerative design strategies for these traditional atlases. Furthermore, through MasterGo and SketchUp, this study elaborated on the regenerative design strategies of residential architecture information atlases in the Mingyue Bay village, including spatial-temporal information atlas, cultural tourism service atlas, scene experience atlas, model simulation atlas, and game interaction atlas. These atlases are integrated into a service platform of rural intelligent tourism, aimed at fostering the global inheritance of residential architecture culture and the revitalization of rural intelligent tourism.

Abstract. Background:. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous and complex reproductive endocrinological disease that could lead to infertility. There were many attempts to classify PCOS but it remains unclear whether there is a specific subgroup of PCOS that is associated with the best or worst reproductive outcomes of assisted reproductive techniques (ART). Methods:. Infertile PCOS patients who underwent their first cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University from January 2019 to December 2021 were included. Basic clinical and laboratory information of each individual were extracted. Unsupervised cluster analysis was performed. Controlled ovarian stimulation parameters and reproductive outcomes were collected and compared between the different clusters of PCOS. Results:. Our analysis clustered women with PCOS into "reproductive", "metabolic", and "balanced" clusters based on nine traits. Reproductive group was characterized by high levels of testosterone (T), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), follicular stimulation hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH). Metabolic group was characterized by high levels of body mass index (BMI), fasting insulin, and fasting glucose. Balanced group was characterized by low levels of the aforementioned reproductive and metabolic parameters, except for SHBG. Compared with PCOS patients in reproductive and balanced clusters, those in metabolic cluster had lower rates of good quality day 3 embryo and blastocyst formation. Moreover, PCOS patients in the reproductive cluster had greater fresh embryo transfer (ET) cancelation rate and clinical pregnancy rate after fresh ET than metabolic cluster (odds ratio [OR] = 3.37, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.77–6.44, and OR = 6.19, 95% CI: 1.58–24.24, respectively). And compared with PCOS of metabolic cluster, PCOS of balanced cluster also had higher chance for fresh ET cancelation (OR = 2.83, 95% CI: 1.26–6.35). Conclusion:. Our study suggested that PCOS patients in metabolic cluster may be associated with adverse reproductive outcomes and might need individualized treatment and careful monitoring before and during ART.

BackgroundPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive–endocrine disorder with wide-ranging metabolic implications, including obesity. RNA editing, a post-transcriptional modification, can fine-tune protein function and introduce heterogeneity. However, the role of RNA editing and its impact on adipose tissue function in PCOS remain poorly understood.MethodsThis study aimed to comprehensively analyze RNA-editing events in abdominal and subcutaneous adipose tissue of PCOS patients and healthy controls using high-throughput whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and RNA sequencing.ResultsOur results revealed that PCOS patients exhibited more RNA-editing sites, with adenosine-to-inosine (A-to-I) editing being prevalent. The expression of ADAR genes, responsible for A-to-I editing, was also higher in PCOS. Aberrant RNA-editing sites in PCOS adipose tissue was enriched in immune responses, and interleukin-12 biosynthetic process. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling, Notch signaling, terminal uridylyl transferase 4 (TUT4), hook microtubule tethering protein 3 (HOOK3), and forkhead box O1 (FOXO1) were identified to be of significant differences. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in PCOS adipose tissue were enriched in immune responses compared with controls, and the DEGs between subcutaneous and abdominal adipose tissue were also enriched in immune responses suggesting the important role of subcutaneous adipose tissue. Furthermore, we identified the correlations between RNA editing levels and RNA expression levels of specific genes, such as ataxia–telangiectasia mutated (ATM) and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma translocation protein 1 (MALT1) in inflammation pathways and ATM, TUT4, and YTH N6-methyladenosine RNA-binding protein C2 (YTHDC2) in oocyte development pathway.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that RNA-editing dysregulation in PCOS adipose tissue may contribute to inflammatory dysregulations. Understanding the interplay between RNA editing and adipose tissue function may unveil potential therapeutic targets for PCOS management. However, further research and validation are required to fully elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these associations.

ObjectiveTo explore the effects of insulin resistance (IR) on embryo quality and pregnancy outcomes in women with or without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).MethodsA retrospective cohort study concerning patients with/without PCOS who received gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-antagonist protocol for IVF/ICSI from January 2019 to July 2022 was conducted. All the patients included underwent oral glucose tolerance test plus the assessment of insulin release within 6 months before the controlled ovarian stimulation. The Matsuda Index was calculated to diagnose IR. Two populations (PCOS and non-PCOS) were included and each was divided into IR and non-IR groups and analyzed respectively. The primary outcome was the high-quality day 3 embryo rate.ResultsA total of 895 patients were included (751 with PCOS and 144 without PCOS). We present a novel approach to fabricate an iron-nickel alloy material tailored for methane dry reforming (DRM) by embedding FeNi3 nanoparticles within an engineered SBA-15 mesoporous silica framework with a tunable structure (FeNi3@SBA-15). This alloy material exhibits superior DRM performance, achieving impressive methane conversions exceeding 98% and 99% at temperatures of 800 ℃ and 900 ℃ respectively. Moreover, FeNi3@SBA-15 demonstrates remarkable coking resistance and significantly outperforms the equivalent bulk catalyst. Specifically, we observe a methane conversion increase of over 400% and a carbon dioxide conversion increase of over 700% within the temperature range of 600 ℃ to 800 ℃. Theoretical calculations reveal that coordinately unsaturated Ni atoms on FeNi3 nanoparticles significantly promote the activation ability of C-H and C-O, leading to enhanced DRM performance. The insights gained from this study provide valuable guidance for the design of advanced alloy materials to efficiently mitigate greenhouse gases, while also opening the path towards sustainable syngas production, offering a viable and environmentally friendly approach to energy generation.

PurposeTo compare the effects of recombinant FSH alfa (rFSH-alfa), rFSH-beta, highly purified human menopausal gonadotropin (HP-hMG) and urinary FSH (uFSH) in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome who have undertaken the GnRH antagonist protocol during IVF/ICSI treatment.MethodA single-center retrospective cohort study including women with PCOS who received the GnRH antagonist protocol from January 2019 to July 2022 was conducted. Patients were divided into rFSH-alfa group, HP-hMG group, uFSH group, and rFSH-beta group, and the number of oocytes retrieved, clinical pregnancy rate of the fresh cycle (primary outcomes), embryo quality, and severe OHSS rate (secondary outcomes) were compared.ResultsNo statistical differences were found among the four groups in fresh cycle clinical pregnancy rate (p=0.426), nor in the subgroup analyses. Distant hybridization refers to the combination of different genomes from different species and further leads to genetic structure changes in hybrids. For next-generation sequencing limitations, the genetic changes with respect to hybrids or polyploids cannot be fully explained. Here, we obtained 117,526 full-length isoforms from a triploid hybrid grass carp (3nGT, 3n = 72) by the crossing of female grass carp (GC, 2n = 48) and male topmouth culter (TC, 2n = 48) using single-molecule long reads sequencing technology. Further, the gene fusion, alternative splicing (AS), transcription of homologous genes, and novel genes were analyzed. The results showed that 1563 fusion genes were detected in 3nGT including 872 heterogenous fusion genes derived from GC and TC genomes. Meanwhile, 175,644 AS events were identified and divided into five models, of which IntronR was the dominant model. In addition, 8964 novel genes were discovered, of which 2802 novel genes were annotated. Finally, scans results of Hox gene family revealed that both GC and TC Hox genes were transcribed in 3nGT, but presented asymmetric transcription patterns with a bias towards the maternal parent GC genome. This study not only provides a rich resource of transcript isoforms for the superior triploid grass carp, but also provides an important insight into rapid genetic changes in hybrid fish.

The unfolded protein response (UPR) is a cell-designated strategy that maintains the balance of protein folding in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). UPR features a network of signal transduction pathways that reprogram the transcription, mRNA translation, and protein post-translational modification to relieve the ER stresses from unfolded/misfolded proteins. Infection with plant viruses can induce the UPR, and activated UPR often promotes plant viral infections in turn. However, the mechanism used by plant viruses to balance UPR and achieve robust infection remain largely unknown. In this study, P1SCSMV was identified as a virus-encoded RNA silencing suppressor (VSR). Heterologous overexpression of P1SCSMV via potato virus X (PVX) was found lead to programmed cell death (PCD) in Nicotiana benthamiana. Furthermore, P1SCSMV was also found to inhibit the PVX infection-triggered UPR by downregulating UPR-related genes and directly induced the distortion and collapse of the ER polygonal meshes on PVX-P1SCSMV infected N. benthamiana. Moreover, self-interaction, VSR activity, UPR inhibition, and cell death phenotype of P1SCSMV were also found to be dependent on its bipartite nuclear localization signal (NLS) (251RKRKLFPRIPLK262). P1SCSMV was found to directly bind to the stem-loop region of NbbZIP60U via its NLS and inhibit the UPR pathways, ultimately resulting in a PCD phenotype in PVX-P1SCSMV infected N. benthamiana leaves. This study also revealed the balancing role of potyviruses encoded P1SCSMV in the UPR pathway to achieve robust viral infection. This may represent a novel virulence strategy for plant viruses.

BackgroundWeb-based short-form videos are increasingly popular for disseminating fire and burn prevention information, but their content quality is unknown. ObjectiveWe aimed to systematically assess the characteristics, content quality, and public impact of web-based short-form videos offering primary and secondary (first aid) prevention recommendations for fires and burns in China between 2018 and 2021. MethodsWe retrieved short-form videos offering both primary and secondary (first aid) information to prevent fire and burn injuries published on the 3 most popular web-based short-form video platforms in China: TikTok, Kwai, and Bilibili. To assess video content quality, we calculated the proportion of short-form videos that included information on each of the 15 recommendations for burn prevention education from the World Health Organization (WHO; P1) and that correctly disseminated each recommendation (P2). High P1 and P2 indicated better content quality. To assess their public impact, we calculated the median (IQR) of 3 indicators: the number of comments, likes, and saves as a favorite by viewers. Chi-square test, trend chi-square test, and Kruskal-Wallis H test examined differences in indicators across the 3 platforms, years, content, and time duration of videos and between videos disseminating correct versus incorrect information. ResultsOverall, 1459 eligible short-form videos were included. The number of short-form videos increased by 16 times between 2018 and 2021. ABSTRACT A balanced vaginal microbiome dominated by Lactobacillus can help promote women’s reproductive health, with Lactobacillus crispatus showing the most beneficial effect. However, the potential role of vaginal microbiomes in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) development is not thoroughly explored. In this nested case-control study based on an assisted reproductive technology follow-up cohort, we prospectively assessed the association between pregestational vaginal microbiomes with HDP by collecting vaginal swabs from 75 HDP cases (HDP group) and 150 controls (NP group) and using 16S amplicon sequencing for bacterial identification. The vaginal microbial composition of the HDP group significantly differed from that of the NP group. The abundance of L. crispatus was significantly lower, and the abundances of Gardnerella vaginalis was significantly higher, in the HDP group than in the NP group. Of note, L. crispatus-dominated vaginal community state type was associated with a decreased risk for HDP (odds ratio = 0.436; 95% confidence interval, 0.229 to 0.831) compared with others. Additionally, network analysis revealed different bacterial interactions with 61 and 57 exclusive edges in the NP and HDP groups, respectively. Compared with the HDP group, the NP group showed a higher weighted degree and closeness centrality. Several taxa, including G. vaginalis, L. iners, and bacterial vaginosis-associated bacteria (Prevotella, Megasphaera, Finegoldia, and Porphyromonas), were identified as “drivers” for network rewiring. Notable alterations of predicted pathways involved in amino acid, cofactor, and vitamin metabolism; membrane transport; and bacterial toxins were observed in the HDP group. IMPORTANCE The etiology of HDP remains unclear to date. Effective methods for the individualized prediction and prevention are lacking. Pregestational vaginal dysbiosis precedes the diagnosis of HDP, providing a novel perspective on the etiology of HDP. Early pregnancy is the critical period of placental development, and abnormal placentation initiates HDP development. Thus, disease prevention should be considered before pregnancy. Vaginal microbiome characterization and probiotic interventions before pregnancy are preferred because of their safety and potential for early prevention. This study is the first to prospectively assess associations between pregestational vaginal microbiome and HDP. L. crispatus-dominated vaginal community state type is linked to a reduced risk for HDP. These findings suggest that vaginal microbiome characterization may help identify individuals at high risk for HDP and offer potential targets for the development of novel pregestational intervention methods.

Convection has a nonnegligible effect on the growth of the magnesium dendrite with six-primary-branch pattern. Most work, however, investigates the effect of the convection by simplifying the melt flow as a constant horizontal flow. In this work, four convection behaviors, including equally distributed convection, linearly distributed convection, sinusoidal-wave convection, and square-wave convection, are imposed and simulated through the phase-field lattice-Boltzmann schemes. The effects of constant (the former two) and altering (the latter two) flow fields are quantified by the length ratio of the upstream primary arm to the downstream one. The results show that the dendrite asymmetry increases under the constant forced convections but presents nonmonotonic change under the altering convections. A simple mathematical relation is fitted to summarize the dependence of the dendrite asymmetry on the input velocity, the undercooling, and the flow frequency. Deep understanding of the convection effects can guide the prediction and control of the magnesium dendrite under more complex situations.

Abstract Background To summarize the up-to-date empirical evidence on trial-level characteristics of randomized controlled trials associated with treatment effect estimates. Methods A systematic review searched three databases up to August 2020. Meta-epidemiological (ME) studies of randomized controlled trials on intervention effect were eligible. We assessed the methodological quality of ME studies using a self-developed criterion. Associations between treatment effect estimates and trial-level characteristics were presented using forest plots. Results Eighty ME studies were included, with 25/80 (31%) being published after 2015. Less than one-third ME studies critically appraised the included studies (26/80, 33%), published a protocol (23/80, 29%), and provided a list of excluded studies with justifications (12/80, 15%). Trials with high or unclear (versus low) risk of bias on sequence generation (3/14 for binary outcome and 1/6 for continuous outcome), allocation concealment (11/18 and 1/6), double blinding (5/15 and 2/4) and smaller sample size (4/5 and 2/2) significantly associated with larger treatment effect estimates. Associations between high or unclear risk of bias on allocation concealment (5/6 for binary outcome and 1/3 for continuous outcome), double blinding (4/5 and 1/3) and larger treatment effect estimates were more frequently observed for subjective outcomes. The associations between treatment effect estimates and non-blinding of outcome assessors were removed in trials using multiple observers to reach consensus for both binary and continuous outcomes. Some trial characteristics in the Cochrane risk-of-bias (RoB2) tool have not been covered by the included ME studies, including using validated method for outcome measures and selection of the reported results from multiple outcome measures or multiple analysis based on results (e.g., significance of the results). Conclusions Consistently significant associations between larger treatment effect estimates and high or unclear risk of bias on sequence generation, allocation concealment, double blinding and smaller sample size were found. The impact of allocation concealment and double blinding were more consistent for subjective outcomes. The methodological and reporting quality of included ME studies were dissatisfactory. Future ME studies should follow the corresponding reporting guideline. Specific guidelines for conducting and critically appraising ME studies are needed.

PurposeThe aim of this study was to explore the value of the homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) as a judgment criterion for metformin pre-treatment before in vitro fertilization/intracellular sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) and embryo transfer (ET) for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients.Materials and methodsThe clinical and laboratory information of PCOS patients who received IVF/ICSI-ET from January 2017 to September 2021 was retrospectively analyzed. We compared the clinical pregnancy rate (primary outcome) and controlled ovarian stimulation (COS)-related parameters (secondary outcomes) between patients with and without metformin pre-treatment for all PCOS patients not grouped by HOMA-IR, PCOS patients with HOMA-IR < 2.71, and PCOS patients with HOMA-IR ≥ 2.71.ResultsA total of 969 PCOS patients who received the GnRH-antagonist protocol were included in this study. For all PCOS patients, the metformin group showed comparable clinical pregnancy rates in fresh ET cycles and frozen ET cycles compared with the control group (55.9% vs. 57.1%, p = 0.821 and 63.8% vs. 60.9%, p = 0.497). For PCOS patients with HOMA-IR < 2.71, the clinical pregnancy rates in both fresh ET cycles and frozen ET cycles were statistically similar between the two groups (61.5% vs. 57.6%, p = 0.658 and 70.6% vs. 66.7%, p = 0.535). For PCOS patients with HOMA-IR ≥ 2.71, the clinical pregnancy rate in fresh ET cycles was comparable between the two groups (51.5% vs. 56.3, p = 0.590), but it was statistically higher in the metformin group than in the control group in frozen ET cycles (57.1% vs. 40.0%, p = 0.023). The metformin group had less oocytes retrieved, a lower cleaved oocyte rate, a lower available D3 embryo rate, a lower blastocyst formation rate, and a lower available blastocyst rate than the control group.ConclusionHOMA-IR is a judgment criterion for metformin pre-treatment before IVF/ICSI-ET in patients with PCOS. Metformin pre-treatment could be added for PCOS patients with HOMA-IR ≥ 2.71 during frozen IVF/ICSI-ET cycles to improve the clinical pregnancy rate.

Sleep regulation and functioning may rely on systematic coordination throughout the whole brain, including the cerebellum. However, whether and how interactions between the cerebellum and other brain regions vary across sleep stages remain poorly understood. Here, using simultaneous EEG-fMRI recordings captured from 73 participants during wakefulness and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, we constructed cerebellar connectivity among intrinsic functional networks with intra-cerebellar, neocortical and subcortical regions. We uncovered that cerebellar connectivity exhibited sleep-dependent alterations: slight differences between wakefulness and N1/N2 sleep and greater changes in N3 sleep than other states. Region-specific cerebellar connectivity changes between N2 sleep and N3 sleep were also revealed: general breakdown of intra-cerebellar connectivity, enhancement of limbic-cerebellar connectivity and alterations of cerebellar connectivity with spatially specific neocortices. Further correlation analysis showed that functional connectivity between the cerebellar Control II network and regions (including the insula, hippocampus, and amygdala) correlated with delta power during N3 and beta power during N2 sleep. These findings systematically reveal altered cerebellar connectivity among intrinsic networks from wakefulness to deep sleep and highlight the potential role of the cerebellum in sleep regulation and functioning.

Since the 1990s, the existence of water-ice in the permanent shadow areas of the lunar polar regions and the problem of water in the early lunar period have become the hot spot of international lunar exploration. This paper analyzes the research progress and existing problems of lunar water-ice detection in recent years. Based on the analysis of expected foreign lunar water-ice exploration missions, the major scientific problems of lunar water-ice are analyzed. From different exploration methods, this paper tentatively puts forward the scientific tasks, payload configuration, functional requirements, and possible scientific outputs of water-ice in China's future lunar exploration projects, which can provide reference for future lunar exploration missions.

Abstract Collagen, the main component of mammal skin, has been traditionally used in leather manufacturing for thousands of years due to its diverse physicochemical properties. Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals and the main component of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The properties of collagen also make it an ideal building block for the engineering of materials for a range of biomedical applications. Reproductive medicine, especially human fertility preservation strategies and reproductive organ regeneration, has attracted significant attention in recent years as it is key in resolving the growing social concern over aging populations worldwide. Collagen-based biomaterials such as collagen hydrogels, decellularized ECM (dECM), and bioengineering techniques including collagen-based 3D bioprinting have facilitated the engineering of reproductive tissues. This review summarizes the recent progress in applying collagen-based biomaterials in reproductive. Furthermore, we discuss the prospects of collagen-based materials for engineering artificial reproductive tissues, hormone replacement therapy, and reproductive organ reconstruction, aiming to inspire new thoughts and advancements in engineered reproductive tissues research. During recent decades, many new emerging or re-emerging RNA viruses have been found in plants through the development of deep-sequencing technology and big data analysis. These findings largely changed our understanding of the origin, evolution and host range of plant RNA viruses. There is evidence that their genetic composition originates from viruses, and host populations play a key role in the evolution and host adaptability of plant RNA viruses. In this mini-review, we describe the state of our understanding of the evolution of plant RNA viruses in view of compositional biases and explore how they adapt to the host. It appears that adenine rich (A-rich) coding sequences, low CpG and UpA dinucleotide frequencies and lower codon usage patterns were found in the vast majority of plant RNA viruses. The codon usage pattern of plant RNA viruses was influenced by both natural selection and mutation pressure, and natural selection mostly from hosts was the dominant factor. The codon adaptation analyses support that plant RNA viruses probably evolved a dynamic balance between codon adaptation and deoptimization to maintain efficient replication cycles in multiple hosts with various codon usage patterns. In the future, additional combinations of computational and experimental analyses of the nucleotide composition and codon usage of plant RNA viruses should be addressed.

Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV) is a significant virus of ornamental plants and fruit trees. It is essential to study this virus due to its impact on the horticultural industry. Several studies on PNRSV diversity and phytosanitary detection technology were reported, but the content on the codon usage bias (CUB), dinucleotide preference and codon pair bias (CPB) of PNRSV is still uncertain. We performed comprehensive analyses on a dataset consisting of 359 coat protein (CP) gene sequences in PNRSV to examine the characteristics of CUB, dinucleotide composition, and CPB. The CUB analysis of PNRSV CP sequences showed that it was not only affected by natural selection, but also affected by mutations, and natural selection played a more significant role compared to mutations as the driving force. The dinucleotide composition analysis showed an over-expression of the CpC/GpA dinucleotides and an under-expression of the UpA/GpC dinucleotides. The dinucleotide composition of the PNRSV CP gene showed a weak association with the viral lineages and hosts, but a strong association with viral codon positions. Furthermore, the CPB of PNRSV CP gene is low and is related to dinucleotide preference and codon usage patterns. This research provides reference for future research on PNRSV genetic diversity and gene evolution mechanism.

Spatial hearing in humans is a high-level auditory process that is crucial to rapid sound localization in the environment. Both neurophysiological models with animals and neuroimaging evidence from human subjects in the wakefulness stage suggest that the localization of auditory objects is mainly located in the posterior auditory cortex. However, whether this cognitive process is preserved during sleep remains unclear. To fill this research gap, we investigated the sleeping brain's capacity to identify sound locations by recording simultaneous electroencephalographic (EEG) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) signals during wakefulness and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in human subjects. Using the frequency-tagging paradigm, the subjects were presented with a basic syllable sequence at 5 Hz and a location change that occurred every three syllables, resulting in a sound localization shift at 1.67 Hz. The EEG and MEG signals were used for sleep scoring and neural tracking analyses, respectively. Neural tracking responses at 5 Hz reflecting basic auditory processing were observed during both wakefulness and NREM sleep, although the responses during sleep were weaker than those during wakefulness. Cortical responses at 1.67 Hz, which correspond to the sound location change, were observed during wakefulness regardless of attention to the stimuli but vanished during NREM sleep. These results for the first time indicate that sleep preserves basic auditory processing but disrupts the higher-order brain function of sound localization.

Phosphorylation is one of the most extensively investigated post-translational modifications that orchestrate a variety of cellular signal transduction processes. The phosphorylation of virus-encoded proteins plays an important regulatory role in the infection cycle of such viruses in plants. In recent years, molecular mechanisms underlying the phosphorylation of plant viral proteins have been widely studied. Based on recent publications, our study summarizes the phosphorylation analyses of plant viral proteins and categorizes their effects on biological functions according to the viral life cycle. This review provides a theoretical basis for elucidating the molecular mechanisms of viral infection. Furthermore, it deepens our understanding of the biological functions of phosphorylation in the interactions between plants and viruses.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the major cause of anovulatory infertility. Since women with PCOS are often accompanied by increased body weight and hyper response to controlled ovarian stimulation, individualized gonadotropin (Gn) dose is required to achieve a therapeutic effect while minimizing the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation simultaneously. We aimed to investigate the essential role of body weight in optimizing initial Gn dosage for PCOS patients during in vitro fertilization (IVF). We retrospectively included 409 infertile PCOS patients who used gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-antagonist fixed protocol and underwent their first cycle of IVF in West China Second University Hospital from January 2019 to June 2021. Baseline characteristics controlled ovarian stimulation parameters, and reproductive outcomes were compared between patients with different body weights and different ovarian responses. Multivariable linear regression analyses were adopted to investigate the relationship between body weight and initial Gn dosage. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn to find the optimal cut-off value of body weight in predicting the starting Gn dosage so as to prevent high ovarian response (HOR). We found that luteinizing hormone (LH) level and Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) level were lowest in the group with body weight over 70 kg and was highest in the group with body weight less than 50 kg. Increased body weight was significantly correlated to the rise of initial Gn dosage (Beta = 0.399, t = 8.921, p < 0.001). Normal ovarian response (NOR) patients had significantly less fresh cycle cancel rate and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) rate which outweighed the fewer embryos compared with HOR patients. Using ROC curves, 53.25 kg (sensitivity, 84.2%; specificity, 53.8%) and 70.5 kg (sensitivity, 58.8%; specificity, 93.0%) were identified as the optimal cut-off values to predict the initial Gn dosage of no more than 150 IU and 225 IU, respectively. In conclusion, adjusting the initial Gn dosage based on body weight is crucial to preventing ovarian hyperstimulation while not influencing reproductive outcomes for PCOS patients during IVF.

PurposeTo explore another choice for a controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) protocol that does not increase severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) risk among polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients with specific clinical features.MethodsA retrospective study was performed. Two hundred and fifty-nine participants were divided into two groups, group 1 (fixed GnRH antagonist protocol, n = 295) and group 2 (follicular-phase GnRH agonist protocol, n = 69) according to COS protocols. The basic characteristics and laboratory indicators between these two groups were compared. The severe OHSS rate and clinical pregnancy rate were selected as indicators to evaluate the risks and benefits of the two COS protocols. Subgroup analyses for the severe OHSS rate and clinical pregnancy rate were performed based on baseline luteinizing hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone (bLH/FSH) and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels.ResultsThe severe OHSS rate was statistically higher in group 2 than in group 1 (11.6% vs. 3.7%, p = 0.008), but the biochemical pregnancy rate and clinical pregnancy rate showed no statistical difference between the groups (71.9% vs. 60.3% and 62.5% vs. 54.3%). In recent years, many studies have indicated that vitamin C might be negatively associated with the risk of cancer, but the actual relationship between vitamin C and cancer remains ambivalent. Therefore, we utilized a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to explore the causal associations of genetically predicted vitamin C with the risk of a variety of cancers. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with vitamin C at a significance level of p < 5 × 10–8 and with a low level of linkage disequilibrium (LD) (r2 < 0.01) were selected from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of plasmid concentration of vitamin C consisting of 52,018 individuals. The data of the GWAS outcomes were obtained from United Kingdom Biobank, FinnGen Biobank and the datasets of corresponding consortia. In the inverse-variance weight (IVW) method, our results did not support the causal association of genetically predicted vitamin C with the risk of overall cancer and 14 specific types of cancer. Similar results were observed in sensitivity analyses where the weighted median and MR-Egger methods were adopted, and heterogeneity and pleiotropy were not observed in statistical models. Therefore, our study suggested that vitamin C was not causally associated with the risk of cancer. Further studies are warranted to discover the potential protective and therapeutic effects of vitamin C on cancer, and its underlying mechanisms.

Background: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) has been used in the treatment of systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), but its effect on lupus activity during pregnancy, preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) remains unclear. Methods: PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases were searched before 11 September 2022 for randomized clinical trials (RCT) or observational studies involving additional HCQ treatment and pregnant women diagnosed as having SLE and/or APS/positive antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). Risks of high lupus activity, preeclampsia and IUGR were explored. Results: One RCT and 13 cohort studies were included. A total of 1764 pregnancies were included in the pooled meta-analysis (709 in the HCQ group vs. 1055 in the control group). After the additional use of HCQ, the risk of high lupus activity decreased (RR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.57–0.97, p = 0.03). For preeclampsia, the total incidence decreased (RR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.37–0.78, p = 0.001). The subgroup analysis showed statistical significance in the SLE subgroup (RR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.34–0.78, p = 0.002) but not in the APS/aPLs subgroup (RR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.29–1.54, p = 0.34). For IUGR, the decrease in incidence was not statistically significant (RR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.47–1.35, p = 0.46), neither in the SLE subgroup (RR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.40–1.36, p = 0.33) nor in the APS/aPLs subgroup (RR: 1.26, 95% CI: 0.34–4.61, p = 0.73). Conclusion: The additional use of HCQ may decrease the risk of high lupus activity during pregnancy and the incidence of preeclampsia for SLE patients, but the results do not support that using HCQ decreases the incidence of preeclampsia for APS/aPLs patients or reduces IUGR risk for SLE and/or APS/aPLs patients.

Abstract Background Unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA) is defined as two or more consecutive pregnancy losses, generally of unknown cause; it is related to a failure of fetal–maternal immunological tolerance. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) exert immunosuppressive effects, which are essential to maintain fetal–maternal immunological tolerance and regulate immune balance. In this study, we used the specific cell-surface phenotype of CD4+CD25highCD127low/− Tregs to investigate the number and suppressive function of Tregs isolated from the peripheral blood of patients with URSA with the aim of expanding our understanding of their role in URSA. Introduction: In the past two decades, urbanization in many Asian countries has led to sedentary lifestyle and overnutrition, which has set the stage for the epidemic of obesity. Those who have obesity during adolescence usually have obesity into adulthood, which causes many medical and psychological issues that can result in premature death. Recent data suggest that short sleep duration may contribute to the risk of obesity, opening a new avenue for potential intervention. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of sleeping time, body mass index (BMI), and fat mass in Chinese freshmen and to indicate the relationship among them. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study consisting of 1,938 freshmen aged from 18 to 24 years, including 684 (35.3%) men and 1,254 (64.7%) women. BMI, sleeping time, and other potential related variables were collected by questionnaire. Obesity and overweight were defined as BMI ≥28.0 and ≥24.0, respectively. All students were divided into three groups according to the tertiles of body fat percentage (Fat%), which were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Sleeping time was divided into 3 categories based on the duration, 8 h per day. Results: Participants who slept longer had lower BMI and Fat%. Sex, diet control, and maternal obesity were all significantly associated with BMI or Fat% after adjustment. There were significant differences between sleeping time 8 h in both overweight group and Fat% tertiles independent of adjustment used. The significant difference between sleeping time 6–8 and >8 h only existed in overweight group, while irrelevant relation was observed in both models of obesity group. Conclusion: Longer sleeping time was associated with a lower BMI in Chinese freshmen, even after adjustment for multiple confounders. The overweight stage is a critical period of weight management intervention by changing sleeping time. If adolescents have entered the obesity stage, the effect size of lifestyle intervention might be significantly limited.

The association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometrial cancer remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the causal association between genetically predicted PCOS and endometrial cancer risk in two ethnic groups through a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. Our study includes 13 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables (IVs) for PCOS in Europeans, and another 13 SNPs are used as IVs for PCOS in Asians. Outcome data were obtained from the largest published meta-GWAS of European ancestry to date, as well as from the BioBank Japan Project of Asian ancestry. Our study demonstrates that genetically predicted PCOS is not causally associated with the risk of overall endometrial cancer in either Europeans or Asians (odds ratio (OR) = 0.93, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.85–1.01, p = 0.09 and OR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.84–1.13, p = 0.75, respectively). Subgroup analyses according to histotype further illustrate that PCOS might not be associated with the risk of either endometrioid endometrial cancer or non-endometrioid endometrial cancer in European ancestry. No pleiotropy is found in our study, and a sensitivity analysis shows similar results. Our results indicate that genetically predicted PCOS might not be associated with the risk of endometrial cancer.

Epilepsy is one of the most challenging neurologic diseases confronted by human society. Approximately 30–40% of the worldwide epilepsy patients are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy and require pre-surgery evaluation. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a unique technology that provides optimal spatial-temporal resolution and has become a powerful non-invasive imaging modality that can localize the interictal spikes and guide the implantation of intracranial electrodes. Currently, the most widely used MEG source estimation method for clinical applications is equivalent current dipoles (ECD). However, ECD has difficulties in precisely locating deep sources such as insular lobe. In contrast to ECD, another MEG source estimation method named spatio-temporal unifying tomography (STOUT) with spatial sparsity has particular advantages in locating deep sources. In this case study, we recruited a 5 year-old female patient with insular lobe epilepsy and her seizure recurred in 1 year after receiving the radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RF-TC) therapy. The STOUT method was adopted to locate deep sources for identifying the epileptic foci in epilepsy evaluation. MEG STOUT method strongly supported a stereo-electroencephalographic (SEEG)-guided RF-TC operation, and the patient reported a satisfactory therapeutic effect. This case raises the possibility that STOUT method can be used particularly for the localization of deep sources, and successfully conducted RF-TC under the guidance of MEG STOUT results.

(1) Background: To investigate whether women suffering from recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) have a higher prevalence of self-reported depression than healthy controls and to assess the associated risk factors for RPL women self-reporting the symptom of depression. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study investigating 247 women with histories of RPL and 193 healthy women was performed in Southwest China. The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) was used to measure self-reported depression, and the prevalence of self-reported depression was compared between the two groups. Sociodemographic data for the two groups and clinical information for the RPL group were collected by questionnaires. (3) Results: The prevalence of self-reported depression was higher in the RPL group than in the control group (45.3% vs. 30.1%, p < 0.01). Subgroup analyses indicated that the statistical difference in the prevalence of self-reported depression was significant in the subgroups of women in the first trimester of gestation, age ≥ 36 years, BMI ≥ 18.5 kg/m2, working hours ≤ 8 h/day, university and higher education, and urban residence. Multivariable logistic analysis indicated that age ≥ 36 years, >2 times of spontaneous miscarriages, and no history of live birth were independent risk factors for RPL women self-reporting depression. (4) Conclusions: A higher prevalence of self-reported depression was observed in RPL patients than in healthy women. The psychological status for RPL patients with age ≥ 36 years, >2 times of spontaneous miscarriages, or without a history of a live birth needs to be further addressed.

Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), an important pathogen that causes mosaic diseases in vegetable crops worldwide, belongs to the genus Potyvirus of the family Potyviridae. Previously, the areas of genetic variation, population structure, timescale, and migration of TuMV have been well studied. However, the codon usage pattern and host adaptation analysis of TuMV is unclear. Here, compositional bias and codon usage of TuMV were performed using 184 non-recombinant sequences. We found a relatively stable change existed in genomic composition and a slightly lower codon usage choice displayed in TuMV protein-coding sequences. Statistical analysis presented that the codon usage patterns of TuMV protein-coding sequences were mainly affected by natural selection and mutation pressure, and natural selection was the key influencing factor. The codon adaptation index (CAI) and relative codon deoptimization index (RCDI) revealed that TuMV genes were strongly adapted to Brassica oleracea from the present data. Similarity index (SiD) analysis also indicated that B. oleracea is potentially the preferred host of TuMV. Our study provides the first insights for assessing the codon usage bias of TuMV based on complete genomes and will provide better advice for future research on TuMV origins and evolution patterns.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine and metabolic diseases among women of reproductive age. Inflammation may be involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS, but its exact relationship with PCOS remains unclear. Herein, we investigate the causal association between systemic inflammatory regulators and PCOS risk through a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach based on the latest and largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 41 systemic inflammatory regulators in 8293 Finnish participants and a GWAS meta-analysis consisting of 10,074 PCOS cases and 103,164 controls of European ancestry. Our results suggest that higher levels of IL-17 and SDF1a, as well as lower levels of SCGFb and IL-4, are associated with an increased risk of PCOS (OR = 1.794, 95% CI = 1.150 – 2.801, P = 0.010; OR = 1.563, 95% CI = 1.055 – 2.315, P = 0.026; OR = 0.838, 95% CI = 0.712 – 0.986, P = 0.034; and OR = 0.637, 95% CI = 0.413 – 0.983, P = 0.042, respectively). In addition, genetically predicted PCOS is related to increased levels of IL-2 and VEGF (OR = 1.257, 95% CI = 1.022 – 1.546, P = 0.030 and OR = 1.112, 95% CI = 1.006 – 1.229, P = 0.038, respectively). Our results indicate the essential role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of PCOS. Further studies are warranted to assess the possibility of these biomarkers as targets for PCOS prevention and treatment.

Introduction: The association between systemic sclerosis (SSc) and sexual dysfunction was controversial. Aim: To explore the impacts of SSc on sexual function, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with SSc and associated risk factors. Methods: A systematic review of all published studies was performed. Studies exploring the association between SSc and sexual function were retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO. All retrieved papers were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Main Outcome Measure: The impacts of SSc on sexual function, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in males and females with SSc and associated risk factors. Results: A total 12 studies were included in this study. The prevalence of sexual dysfunction in SSc males and SSc females were 76.9–81.4% and 46.7–86.6%, respectively. But the direct impacts of SSc on sexual function were controversial. EULAR SSc activity score ≥3, the number of complications ≥2, and the presence of anticardiolipin antibody and anti U1 ribonucleoprotein antibody in males and resistive index (RI) and the systolic/diastolic (S/D) ratio of clitoral blood in females have potential to be SSc-specific risk factors for sexual dysfunction. Clinical Implications: Clinicians need to pay more attention to the impacts of SSc on sexual function of patients especially in those with risk factors. Strengths & Limitations: Systematically explored the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in SSc males and females, and the risk factors of sexual dysfunction for SSc were explored innovatively. However, there were some limitations in included studies prevented exploring the impacts of SSc on sexual function deeply. The growth in the global energy consumption demands an increasing use of the renewable energy sources. Nevertheless, fossil fuels are projected to remain as the dominating backbone of petrochemical and consumer industry in the coming decades. As a bridge from the fossil fuel-based to renewable fuel-based economy, chemical looping technology has been developed to achieve sustainable applications by generating highly efficient energy and products through economically viable processes. This article discusses the advances in chemical looping with a focus on the fundamentals of formulation concepts on chemical looping carriers, rationale for reactor configurations, and design consideration from the process analysis. Particularly, the carriers utilized for different chemical looping applications ranging from syngas generation to ammonia synthesis are elaborated. The reactor configurations applied for different chemical looping systems are discussed along with the essentials of the process simulation approach to system optimization. The article also describes the prospects of the future development in the chemical looping technology, and its viability and readiness for industrial deployment.

The sugarcane streak mosaic virus (SCSMV) is the most important disease in sugarcane produced in southern China. The SCSMV encoded protein 1 (P1SCSMV) is important in disease development, but little is known about its detailed functions in plant–virus interactions. Here, the differential accumulated proteins (DAPs) were identified in the heterologous expression of P1SCSMV via a potato virus X (PVX)-based expression system, using a newly developed four-dimensional proteomics approach. The data were evaluated for credibility and reliability using qRT-RCR and Western blot analyses. The physiological response caused by host factors that directly interacted with the PVX-encoded proteins was more pronounced for enhancing the PVX accumulation and pathogenesis in Nicotiana benthamiana. P1SCSMV reduced photosynthesis by damaging the photosystem II (PSII). Overall, P1SCSMV promotes changes in the physiological status of its host by up- or downregulating the expression of host factors that directly interact with the viral proteins. This creates optimal conditions for PVX replication and movement, thereby enhancing its accumulation levels and pathogenesis. Our investigation is the first to supply detailed evidence of the pathogenesis-enhancing role of P1SCSMV, which provides a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind virus–host interactions.

Magnesian suite (Mg-suite) rocks represent plutonic materials from the lunar crust, and their global distribution can provide critical information for the early magmatic differentiation and crustal asymmetries of the Moon. Visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectrometers mounted on orbiters and rovers have been proven to be powerful approaches for planetary mineral mapping, which are instrumental in diagnosing Mg-suite rocks. However, due to the scarcity and diversity of Mg-suite samples, laboratory measurements with variable proportions of minerals are imperative for spectral characterization. In this study, spectroscopic investigation and petrographic study were conducted on lunar Mg-suite meteorite Northwest Africa 8687. We classify the sample as a pink spinel-bearing anorthositic norite through spectral and petrographic characteristics. The ground-truth information of the Mg-suite rock is provided for future exploration. Meanwhile, the results imply that the VNIR technique has the potential to identify highland rock types by mineral modal abundance and could further be applied in extraterrestrial samples for primary examination due to its advantage of being fast and non-destructive.

Food is the core of urban daily life and socio-economic activities but is rarely the focus of urban planning. The spatial layout of food retail outlets is important for optimizing the urban food system, improving land resource allocation, and encouraging healthy food consumption. Based on food retail POI data, this study employed kernel density estimation, road network centrality, spatial autocorrelation analysis, and locational entropy to analyze the spatial characteristics of supermarkets, produce markets, and small stores in an urban center in Beijing, and explored street coupling and supply-demand matching. The results indicated that within the study area: (1) supermarkets had an obvious “core-periphery” distribution, produce markets had a polycentric distribution, and small stores had a relatively uniform distribution; (2) road network centrality indices revealed a differentiated multi-core-edge distribution; (3) streets with high locational entropy values for supermarkets and produce markets were mostly concentrated in the central area, whereas the matching distribution of small stores was relatively balanced. From the perspective of urban planning, policy implications are proposed based on spatial and social equity, urban-rural differences, population structure and distribution status, and a resilient supply chain. The study findings have practical significance for guiding the development of urban food systems in a healthy, just, and sustainable direction, as well as rational urban land planning.

Narcissus degeneration virus (NDV), narcissus late season yellows virus (NLSYV) and narcissus yellow stripe virus (NYSV), which belong to the genus Potyvirus of the family Potyviridae, cause significant losses in the ornamental value and quality of narcissus. Several previous studies have explored the genetic diversity and evolution rate of narcissus viruses, but the analysis of the synonymous codons of the narcissus viruses is still unclear. Herein, the coat protein (CP) of three viruses is used to analyze the viruses’ phylogeny and codon usage pattern. Phylogenetic analysis showed that NYSV, NDV and NLSYV isolates were divided into five, three and five clusters, respectively, and these clusters seemed to reflect the geographic distribution. The effective number of codon (ENC) values indicated a weak codon usage bias in the CP coding region of the three narcissus viruses. ENC-plot and neutrality analysis showed that the codon usage bias of the three narcissus viruses is all mainly influenced by natural selection compared with the mutation pressure. The three narcissus viruses shared the same best optimal codon (CCA) and the synonymous codon prefers to use codons ending with A/U, compared to C/G. Our study shows the codon analysis of different viruses on the same host for the first time, which indicates the importance of the evolutionary-based design to control these viruses.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is highly contagious and has affected the whole world. We seek to investigate the clinical and laboratory characteristics of COVID-19 patients in the high altitude areas of Sichuan, China. In this retrospective cohort study, a total of 67 patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections in Sichuan's Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture were included from February 1, 2020, to March 2, 2020. Their clinical characteristics, as well as radiological and laboratory features, were extracted. Four (6.0%) patients were categorized as severe cases; 39 (58.2%) were non-severe cases, and 24 (35.8%) were asymptomatic cases. A total of 46 (68.7%) patients were associated with cluster infection events in this study. The most common symptoms were cough, sputum production, dyspnea, fatigue or myalgia, and headache. Seven (10.4%) patients showed leucopenia, and 20 (29.9%) patients showed lymphopenia. Lymphocyte counts and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (NPR) were different between the three groups. In total, 14 (20.9%) patients had thrombocytopenia, and prothrombin times (PT) and fibrinogen levels differed between groups. We also found significant differences in sodium, chloride and calcium levels between the three groups. Antiviral therapy did not lead to obvious adverse events or shortened durations from initial positive to subsequent negative nuclei acid tests. Advanced age, hypertension, high neutrophil count, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, fibrinogen and lactate dehydrogenase levels were identified as independent risk factors for symptomatic cases of COVID-19. In conclusion, the symptoms of patients in high altitude areas were mild, and about one third were asymptomatic. We also identified several independent risk factors for symptomatic cases of COVID-19.

Manipulating small water droplets on an intelligent surface with tunable superhydrophobic adhesion has attracted considerable interests because of potential applications ranging from no-loss transfer to surface chemistry but remains challenging. Herein, we present a strategy to manipulate the small water droplet on a photo-switchable mat, which is fabricated by a fluorinated linear liquid crystal polymer via electrospinning. The electrospun mat with hierarchical microstructures exhibits fast and reversible superhydrophobic adhesion change, and still remains the superhydrophobicity after pinning and removing of the water droplets for several times. Diverse erasable and rewritable arrays on the vertically placed mat are formed by pinning the small water droplets to any high adhesive position after localized light irradiation. Moreover, after evaporation of the water droplets containing aggregation-induced emission materials, the mat exhibits bright fluorescence upon faint UV irradiation to indicate the trace with the same pattern as the original droplets. Such photo-switchable superhydrophobic mats would provide an open tunable surface for microdroplets manipulation.

The subjective inner experience of mental imagery is among the most ubiquitous human experiences in daily life. Elucidating the neural implementation underpinning the dynamic construction of mental imagery is critical to understanding high-order cognitive function in the human brain. Here, we applied a frequency-tagging method to isolate the top-down process of speech mental imagery from bottom-up sensory-driven activities and concurrently tracked the neural processing time scales corresponding to the two processes in human subjects. Notably, by estimating the source of the magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals, we identified isolated brain networks activated at the imagery-rate frequency. In contrast, more extensive brain regions in the auditory temporal cortex were activated at the stimulus-rate frequency. Furthermore, intracranial stereotactic electroencephalogram (sEEG) evidence confirmed the participation of the inferior frontal gyrus in generating speech mental imagery. Our results indicate that a disassociated neural network underlies the dynamic construction of speech mental imagery independent of auditory perception.
