While brain size in primates and their relatives within Euarchontoglires is well-studied, less research has examined brain shape, or the allometric trajectories that underlie the relationship between size and shape. Defining these patterns is key to understanding evolutionary trends. 3D geometric morphometric analyses of endocranial shape were performed on 140 species of extant euarchontoglirans using digital cranial endocasts. Principal component analyses on Procrustes shape variables show a clear phylogenetic pattern in endocranial shape, supported by an ANOVA which identified significant differences in shape among several groups (e.g., Platyrrhini, Strepsirrhini, Scandentia, Rodentia, and Lagomorpha). ANOVAs of shape and size also indicate that allometry has a small but significant impact on endocranial shape across Euarchontoglires, with homogeneity of slopes tests finding significant differences in the scaling relationship between shape and size among these same groups. While most of these clades possess a distinct endocranial morphotype, the highly derived platyrrhines display the strongest relationship between size and shape. Rodents show the most diversity in endocranial shape, potentially attributed to their comparatively weak relationship between shape and size. These results suggest fundamental differences in how shape and size covary among Euarchontoglires, which may have facilitated the adaptive radiations that characterize members of this group., (© 2024. Landmark-based geometric morphometrics is widely used to study the morphology of the endocast, or internal mold of the braincase, and the diversity associated with this structure across vertebrates. Landmarks, as the basic unit of such methods, are intended to be points of correspondence, selected depending on the question at hand, whose proper definition is essential to guarantee robustness and reproducibility of results. In this study, 20 landmarks are defined to provide a framework to analyze the morphological variability in squamate endocasts. Ten species representing a cross-section of the diversity of Squamata from both phylogenetic and ecological (i.e., habitat) perspectives were considered, to select landmarks replicable throughout the entire clade, regardless of the degree of neuroanatomical resolution of the endocast. To assess the precision, accuracy, and repeatability of these newly defined landmarks, both intraobserver and interobserver error were investigated. Estimates of measurement error show that most of the landmarks established here are highly replicable, and preliminary results suggest that they capture aspects of endocast shape related to both phylogenetic and ecologic signals. The petrosal lobules (in whole or part homologous with the paraflocculi) of the cerebellum regulate functions associated with vision including smooth pursuit and velocity control of eye movements, suggesting a possible relationship between the petrosal lobules and behavioral adaptation. Previous studies have produced diverging conclusions regarding the lobules' ecological signal. The current study examines lobule scaling within an ecologically diverse but phylogenetically constrained sample of extant mammals to determine whether ecology influences relative petrosal lobule size. Using the endocasts of 140 Euarchontoglires (Primates, Scandentia, Dermoptera, Lagomorpha, Rodentia), petrosal lobule size was evaluated relative to endocranium and body size, accounting for phylogenetic relationships and ecology (locomotor behavior, diet, activity pattern). Results show a strong positive relationship between lobule size and both endocranial volume and body mass. Phylogeny is a major factor in the scaling of the petrosal lobules, with significant differences in relative size identified between orders and suborders. Concerning ecology, fossorial taxa were found to have significantly smaller petrosal lobules relative to body mass compared to other locomotor groups across Euarchontoglires. The small lobules possessed by this group may reflect an adaptation related to reduced visual reliance. In contrast to previous research, no relationship was identified between relative lobule size and any other ecological variables. While variation in relative lobule size may be adaptively significant in some groups (i.e., fossorial species), it is critical to study the evolution of petrosal lobule size within a narrow phylogenetic scope, with inclusion of fossil material to inform our understanding of evolutionary trajectories., (© 2022 American Association for Anatomy.)

The evolution of the remarkably complex primate brain has been a topic of great interest for decades. Multiple factors have been proposed to explain the comparatively larger primate brain (relative to body mass), with recent studies indicating diet has the greatest explanatory power. Dietary specialisations also correlate with dental adaptations, providing a potential evolutionary link between brain and dental morphological evolution. However, unambiguous evidence of association between brain and dental phenotypes in primates remains elusive. Here we investigate the effect of diet on variation in primate brain and dental morphology and test whether the two anatomical systems coevolved. We focused on the primate suborder Strepsirrhini, a living primate group that occupies a very wide range of dietary niches. By making use of both geometric morphometrics and dental topographic analysis, we extend the study of brain-dental ecomorphological evolution beyond measures of size. After controlling for allometry and evolutionary relatedness, differences in brain and dental morphology were found between dietary groups, and brain and dental morphologies were found to covary. Historical trajectories of morphological diversification revealed a strong integration in the rates of brain and dental evolution and similarities in their modes of evolution. Early lagomorphs are central to our understanding of how the brain evolved in Glires (rodents, lagomorphs and their kin) from basal members of Euarchontoglires (Glires + Euarchonta, the latter grouping primates, treeshrews, and colugos). Here, we report the first virtual endocast of the fossil lagomorph Megalagus turgidus , from the Orella Member of the Brule Formation, early Oligocene, Nebraska, USA. The specimen represents one of the oldest nearly complete lagomorph skulls known. Primitive aspects of the endocranial morphology in Megalagus include large olfactory bulbs, exposure of the midbrain, a small neocortex and a relatively low encephalization quotient. Overall, this suggests a brain morphology closer to that of other basal members of Euarchontoglires (e.g. plesiadapiforms and ischyromyid rodents) than to that of living lagomorphs. However, the well-developed petrosal lobules in Megalagus , comparable to the condition in modern lagomorphs, suggest early specialization in that order for the stabilization of eye movements necessary for accurate visual tracking. Our study sheds new light on the reconstructed morphology of the ancestral brain in Euarchontoglires and fills a critical gap in the understanding of palaeoneuroanatomy of this major group of placental mammals.

We present a LIGO search for short-duration gravitational waves (GWs) associated with soft gamma ray repeater (SGR) bursts. This is the first search sensitive to neutron star f modes, usually considered the most efficient GW emitting modes. We find no evidence of GWs associated with any SGR burst in a sample consisting of the 27 Dec. 2004 giant flare from SGR 1806-20 and 190 lesser events from SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14. The unprecedented sensitivity of the detectors allows us to set the most stringent limits on transient GW amplitudes published to date. We find upper limit estimates on the model-dependent isotropic GW emission energies (at a nominal distance of 10 kpc) between 3x10;{45} and 9x10;{52} erg depending on waveform type, detector antenna factors and noise characteristics at the time of the burst. These upper limits are within the theoretically predicted range of some SGR models.

The efficacy of chlorine (100 microg/ml) and a peroxyacetic acid sanitizer (80 microg/ml; Tsunami 100) in killing Listeria monocytogenes inoculated at populations of 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 4 to 5 log CFU/g of iceberg lettuce pieces, shredded iceberg lettuce, and Romaine lettuce pieces was determined by treatment conditions simulating those used by a commercial fresh-cut lettuce processor. The lettuce/treatment solution ratio was 1:100 (wt/vol), treatment temperature was 4 degrees C, and total treatment time was 30 s. Compared with washing in water, treatment of iceberg lettuce pieces containing all levels of inoculum and shredded iceberg lettuce containing 2 to 3 or 4 to 5 log CFU/g with chlorine or Tsunami resulted in significant reductions (P < or = 0.05) of pathogen populations. Populations recovered from Romaine lettuce pieces treated with chlorine or Tsunami were not significantly different from populations recovered from pieces washed with water, regardless of the inoculum level. Within lettuce type and inoculum level, in no instance was the number of L. monocytogenes recovered from lettuce treated with chlorine or Tsunami significantly different. The rate of decrease in free chlorine concentration in treatment solution as affected by the weight/volume ratio (1:100, 1:10, 2:10, and 4:10) of lettuce and solution was determined. The rate of reduction increased as the ratio decreased. The overall order of magnitude of reduction was shredded iceberg lettuce > iceberg pieces > Romaine pieces. The highest reductions in free chlorine concentration in solutions used to treat shredded lettuce are attributed to the release of tissue juices, which increases the concentration of soluble organic materials available for reaction with chlorine.

The effects of method for applying inoculum and of drying time after inoculation on survival and recovery of foodborne pathogens on iceberg lettuce and parsley were studied. Five-strain mixtures of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella, or Listeria monocytogenes were applied to lettuce and parsley by dip, spot, or spray inoculation methods. Inocula were dried for 2 h at 22 degrees C or for 2 h at 22 degrees C and then 22 h at 4 degrees C before being treated with water (control) or chlorine (200 microg/ml). Significantly higher populations (CFU per lettuce or parsley sample) of E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella (alpha = 0.05) were recovered from dip-inoculated produce than from spot- or spray-inoculated produce. This difference was attributed to larger numbers of cells adhering to lettuce and parsley subjected to dip inoculation. Populations of E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella recovered from lettuce inoculated by spot and spray methods were not significantly different, but populations recovered from spot-inoculated parsley were significantly higher than those recovered from spray-inoculated parsley, even though the number of cells applied was the same. Significantly different numbers of L. monocytogenes were recovered from inoculated lettuce (dip > spray > spot); populations recovered from dip-inoculated parsley were significantly higher than those recovered from spot- or spray-inoculated parsley, which were not significantly different from each other. Populations of pathogens recovered from lettuce and parsley after drying inoculum for 2 h at 22 degrees C were significantly higher than or equal to populations recovered after drying for 2 h at 22 degrees C and then for 22 h at 4 degrees C. Significant differences (water > chlorine) were observed in populations of all pathogens recovered from treated lettuce and parsley, regardless of inoculation method and drying time. It is recommended that spot inoculation with a drying time of 2 h at 22 degrees C followed by 22 h at 4 degrees C be used to determine the efficacy of chlorine and other sanitizers in killing foodborne pathogens on lettuce and parsley.

A study was undertaken to evaluate methods for applying inoculum and to examine the effect of inoculum drying time on survival and recovery of foodborne pathogens inoculated onto the surface of raw, ripe tomatoes. Five-strain mixtures of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella, or Listeria monocytogenes were applied to tomatoes by dip, spot, or spray inoculation methods. Inocula were dried for 1 or 24 h at 22 degrees C before tomatoes were treated with water (control) or chlorine (200 micrograms/ml). Significantly (alpha = 0.05) larger populations (CFU per tomato) of E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella were recovered from dipinoculated tomatoes than from spot- or spray-inoculated tomatoes. This difference was attributed to larger numbers of cells adhering to tomatoes subjected to dip inoculation. Populations of E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella recovered from spot- and spray-inoculated tomatoes containing the same initial number of cells were not significantly different. Significantly different L. monocytogenes population sizes were recovered from inoculated tomatoes (dip > spot > spray). Populations of pathogens recovered from tomatoes were significantly larger when inocula were dried for 1 h compared with 24 h. Significant differences (water > chlorine) were observed in the sizes of populations for all pathogens recovered from tomatoes treated with chlorine, regardless of inoculation method or drying time. Results indicate that inoculation method, drying time, and treatment affect survival and/or recovery of foodborne pathogens inoculated onto the surface of tomatoes. We recommend that spot inoculation with a drying time of 24 h at 22 degrees C be used with standard methods to determine the efficacy of chlorine and other sanitizers for killing foodborne pathogens on tomatoes.

Screening for cognitive impairment in the older adult is an often overlooked element of health promotion. Health care providers may assume that existing deficits will be apparent on routine medical encounters. Frequently, however, patients who are functionally impaired can present a convincing facade of normalcy. Objective screening is necessary to recognize decline. This article briefly reviews normal age-related changes in cognition and suggested screening tools as well as differential diagnoses, highlighting reversible aspects of impairment. Additionally, potential corrective measures are considered where appropriate. This evaluation will become even more significant as the geriatric population steadily increases.

Expedient antimicrobial treatment of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis prevents suppurative complications and rheumatic fever; however, timely therapy does not prevent acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis. Acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis is the most common form of postinfectious glomerulonephritis and a leading cause of acute and chronic renal failure in childhood. This article discusses clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, treatment, and prevention of poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis in adults and children in the primary care setting.

Aims: Gas chromatographic analysis of cell membrane fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), biochemical profiling (biotyping) and EcoRI restriction endonuclease profiling of DNA containing ribosomal RNA sequences (ribotyping) were compared for differentiation of Enterococcus spp., Methods and Results: FAME profiling, biotype profiling and ribotyping of 41 strains from retail Swiss-type cheeses and five strains from culture collections resulted in 17, 25 and 26 groups, respectively, with only two pairs of strains having the same FAME group, biotype profile and ribogroup., Conclusion: Substantial overlap occurred in groupings assigned by the three methods., Significance and Impact of the Study: Differentiation of Enterococcus spp. strains increases if multiple methods are used.

Raw milk, pasteurized milk, unripened cheese (1 day old), and partially ripened cheese (3 months) from 42 milk lots at a plant making hard Italian-type cheese were analyzed for presumptive enterococci using kanamycin esculin azide agar pour plates. Fully ripened (> or =10 months) cheeses, derived from other milk lots, were also tested. Numbers of presumptive staphylococci (Baird-Parker agar [B-P]) were determined in the partially and fully ripened cheeses. Presumptive enterococci were ubiquitous in raw milk, usually at levels of 2.1 to 3.0 log CFU/ml. Enterococci were detected in 11 (26%) of 42 pasteurized milk samples. Enterococci and staphylococci were detected in 39 (93%) and 6 (14%) of unripened cheeses and in 33 (80%) and 4 (10%) of partially ripened cheeses, respectively. Only eight and five samples of enterococci-positive unripened and partially ripened cheese, respectively, were made from pasteurized milk in which presumptive enterococci were detected. Of 42 samples of fully ripened cheese, 35 (83%) and 8 (19%), respectively, contained presumptive enterococci and staphylococci. Results suggest either that low numbers of presumptive enterococci survive pasteurization and cheese ripening or that contamination of cheese by enterococci occurs after pasteurization. Biochemical testing confirmed 63% of presumptive enterococci isolates. None of the 20 presumptive staphylococci isolates produced colonies typical of Staphylococcus aureus on B-P agar; the isolates were identified as 1 Staphylococcus epidermidis, 1 Staphylococcus xylosus, 2 Staphylococcus saprophyticus, 1 Staphylococcus warneri, 5 Kocuria spp., and 10 unidentified gram-positive, catalase-positive cocci. Three staphylococci isolates decreased in numbers by more than 3.0 log CFU/ml in 9.9 ml of skim milk heated 30 min in a 62.8 degrees C water bath. This finding suggests that most presumptive staphylococci detected may have been prepasteurization contaminants. Unless specificity of the kanamycin esculin azide and B-P media is improved, use of presumptive enterococci and staphylococci as indicators of postpasteurization sanitation in plants making hard Italian-type cheese cannot be recommended.

This study investigated novel two-step organic acid/hypochlorite treatments as alternatives to 20000 ppm active chlorine (from calcium hypochlorite) for eliminating Escherichia coli O157:H7 from alfalfa seeds prior to sprouting. Commercially available alfalfa seeds were inoculated with a five-strain E. coli O157:H7 mixture and dried to attain ca. 10(6) CFU/g of seeds. Seeds then underwent one of several soak treatments including: (1) 5% (v/v) lactic acid for 10 min at 42 degrees C; (2) 5% acetic acid (v/v) for 10 min at 42 degrees C; (3) 2.5% lactic acid for 10 min at 42 degrees C followed by 2000 ppm active chlorine (from calcium hypochlorite) for 15 min at 25 degrees C; (4) 5% lactic acid for 10 min at 42 degrees C followed by 2000 ppm active chlorine for 15 min at 25 degrees C; or (5) 20000 ppm active chlorine for 15 min at 25 degrees C. Each treatment reduced numbers of inoculum cells by about 6.0 log10 CFU/g as determined by plating on Sorbitol MacConkey agar (SMac). Plating on non-selective brain heart infusion agar (BHI) showed that treatments 1-4 reduced counts by 2.3-4.1 log10 CFU/g, thus indicating a large proportion of injured cells. Successive lactic acid and hypochlorite treatments (3 and 4) were more lethal than either organic acid alone (1 and 2). No surviving cells were detected on SMac or BHI following treatment with 20000 ppm active chlorine (treatment 5). Regardless of the previous treatment, E. coli O157:H7 counts increased to 10(7)-10(8) CFU/g during sprouting. Germination of seeds was not adversely affected by any of the treatments (germination > 90%). Results of this study show that: (a) non-lethal cell injury must be considered when evaluating intervention treatments against E. coli O157:H7 on alfalfa seeds; (b) reductions of 2-4 log10 CFU/g can be attained without using 20000 ppm active chlorine; (c) successive lactic acid and hypochlorite treatments have greater lethality than organic acid treatments alone; and (d) none of the treatments tested can prevent regrowth of surviving E. coli O157:H7 during sprouting.

The advent of antimicrobial usage in the 1930s provided effective weaponry to combat morbidity and mortality associated with infectious disease. Today, due primarily to inappropriate antibiotic prescribing, these antimicrobial weapons are being seriously threatened by the emerging danger of antimicrobial resistance. Despite guidelines formulated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to address judicious antibiotic use in managing pediatric upper respiratory infection, much unnecessary prescribing continues. Many factors contribute to these erroneous practices, including misconceptions held by both the medical community and the public sector. Additionally, patient expectations have an impact on treatment decisions despite advice to the contrary. A review of the literature provides support for the adoption of the CDC standards of care and underlines the need to further investigate practice patterns. Measures to encourage appropriate antibiotic usage and to reverse the trend toward antimicrobial resistance are needed.

The objectives of this study were (i) to evaluate the survival of coliforms, Escherichia coli, and enterococci in refrigerated apple cider; (ii) to develop simple and inexpensive presumptive methods for detection of these bacteria; (iii) to perform a field survey to determine the prevalence of these bacteria on apples and in apple cider; and (iv) based on our results, to recommend the most useful of these three indicator groups for use in verifying apple cider processing plant sanitation and hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) programs. Eight of 10 coliform strains (5 E. coli, 1 Enterobacter aerogenes, and 2 Klebsiella spp.) inoculated into preservative-free apple cider (pH 3.4, 13.3(o) Brix) survived well at 4 degrees C for 6 days (< or = 3.0 log10 CFU/ml decrease). Of 21 enterococci strains (Enterococcus faecalis, E. faecium, and E. durans), only 2 E. durans and 3 E. faecium strains survived well. Simple broth-based colorimetric methods were developed that detected the presence of approximately 10 cells of coliforms or enterococci. In three field studies, samples of unwashed apples (drops and picked), washed apples, and freshly pressed cider were presumptively analyzed for total coliforms, E. coli, and enterococci using qualitative and/or quantitative methods. Drop apples were more likely than picked apples to be contaminated with E. coli (26.7% vs. 0%) and enterococci (20% vs. 0%). Washing had little effect on coliform populations and in one field study was associated with increased numbers. Total coliform populations in cider ranged from < 1 CFU/ml to > 738 most probable number/ml, depending on the enumeration method used and the sample origin. E. coli was not recovered from washed apples or cider, but enterococci were present on 13% of washed apple samples. The qualitative coliform method successfully detected these bacteria on apples and in cider. Based on its exclusively fecal origin, good survival in apple cider, and association with drop apples, we conclude that E. coli is the most useful organism for verifying apple cider sanitation and HACCP programs.

After a brief introduction to the optical principles and terms, formulas are derived which demonstrate that with conventional methods and designs it is not possible to summate with accuracy the labeled power of three or more ophthalmic lenses in tandem. The effective power of sphero-cylindrical combinations in all currently available eye refractors, when powers of eight to ten diopters are exceeded, may differ from the summated labeled power by a quarter diopter or more, which can be clinically significant. This error can be directly and readily eliminated only in computer-actuated refractors by including a computer program which calculates the effective power and makes the necessary correction.
