Abstract

Our volitional self-initiated acts are preceded by the Bereitschaftspotential (BP) or readiness potential [34,35]. The BP has an early component (BP1) and a late component (BP2, see Fig. 1). The early component BP1 lasts from the very beginning of the BP (1-2 s or more prior to movement onset depending on the complexity of the movement) to app. ½ s prior to movement onset and the late component BP2 lasts from ½ s before to the onset of movement itself (s 0 in Fig. 1). BP1 is symmetrical even for unilateral movement, while BP2 is larger over the contralateral hemisphere.

2. Movement-Related Potentials and Magnetic Fields: New Evidence for SMA Activation Leading MI Activation Prior to Voluntary Movement

Abstract

Movement is the essence of life. Without movement one cannotachieve anything. Consequently, during evolution, movement has been optimized to highest levels of precision. Visible sign of the evolution of movement is that more and more brain has been assigned for motor purposes. A carnivore´s motor cortex is just a `dimple' in its brain supported by merely a minimal frontal cortex. In the primate, the dimple evolved into a motor strip and shifted from an anterior to a central position, in order to accommodate more and more frontal brain. Homo sapiens neanderthalensis with his sloping forehead still had less frontal cortex than Homo sapiens sapiens. In the latter, about half the cortex is pre-rolandic, assigned to motor purposes in the broader sense, i.e. including areas that supply to motor such as premotor, prefrontal, etc. areas. These frontal supplier areas to motor are involved in functions such as motivation, preparation, volition, will, planning, foresight, active anticipation, precaution, intent to act, purposefulness, goal-directedness, etc. i.e. all these functions are frontal in location, and the function of the frontal lobes seems to be almost entirely behavour-related including - in man - all the future-related behavioural aspects. A special role may be assigned to the frontomesial cortex including the supplementary motor area (SMA) and the cingulate motor area (CMA). The brain apparatus supporting motor is among the most recent and highly organized cerebral structures (neoneocortex), and the corticalization of movement developed in a saltatory way in primate phylogenesis. There are many movements man can perform, but basically there are only two primordial categories of movements: Self-initiated voluntary movements = actions and responsive (externally triggered) movements = re-actions. The first category is preceded by a Bereitschaftspotential, the latter occurs between S1 and S2 of a re-action paradigm (Walter et al. 1964). Regarding the BP, recent evidence using multichannel (64) DC-EEG (time constant [tau] = [infinity]) computer-assisted amplification proved that the earliest activity occuring is over the SMA/CMA. Only later comes the primary motor area (MI) into play. This was also shown using current source density techniques (laplacians with spline interpolation), multichannel (143) MEG and FMRI.

Abstract

The maximal speed $v^\ast$ for magnetic flux quanta is determined by the energy relaxation of unpaired electrons and is thus essential for superconducting microstrip single-photon detectors (SMSPDs). However, the deduction of $v^\ast$ from the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) curves at zero magnetic field is hindered by the unknown number of vortices, $n_\mathrm{v}$, as a small number of fast-moving vortices can induce the same voltage as a large number of slow-moving ones. Here, we introduce an approach for the quantitative determination of $n_\mathrm{v}$ and $v^\ast$. The idea is based on the Aslamazov and Larkin prediction of kinks in the $I$-$V$ curves of wide and short superconducting constrictions when the number of fluxons crossing the constriction is increased by one. We realize such conditions in wide MoSi thin strips with slits milled by a focused ion beam and reveal quantum effects in a macroscopic system. By observing kinks in the $I$-$V$ curves with increase of the transport current, we evidence a crossover from a single- to multi-fluxon dynamics and deduce $v^\ast\simeq12\,$km/s. Our experimental observations are augmented with numerical modeling results which reveal a transition from a vortex chain over a vortex jet to a vortex river with increase of $n_\mathrm{v}$ and the vortex velocity. Our findings are essential for the development of 1D and 2D few-fluxon devices and provide a demanded approach for the deduction of $v^\ast$ at the SMSPD operation conditions., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

4. Alternate stabilization methods for CZTSSe photovoltaic devices by thermal treatment, dark electric bias and illumination

Abstract

Reliable measurement routines are crucial for power rating and yield prediction of photovoltaic emerging thinfilm technologies. Copper-Zinc-Tin-Sulfur-Selenium (CZTSSe) thin-film photovoltaic devices are an emerging technology made of abundant elements. Still, sufficient stabilization methods prior to electric power measurement are missing in the international standardization, while existing standards for other thin-film technologies do not work properly for CZTSSe. This study investigated methods for achieving power stabilization of the CZTSSe solar devices. Three complementary stabilization routines for the kesterite-based solar devices were investigated as an alternative to the existing international device testing standards: rapid annealing, dark electric biasing and different operating points under illumination. The typical number of stabilization cycles for power stabilization was between 3 and 6 cycles of rapid annealing, dark electric bias and illumination with a power loss of -19.5%, -11.4%, and -1.9%, for the respective methods. The dark electric bias method was found to provide the most reliable average result for power stabilization. All stabilization methods proved to have the potential to work sufficiently in stabilizing the CZTSSe devices for standardized power measurement.

We aimed to investigate whether a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) prior to TAVI reduces the odds of POD and results in a positive change in self-care ability, intended to lay a foundation for future geriatric comanagement.Patients and methods: We used a retrospective, single-center study with a quasi-experimental design enrolling patients aged 70 years and older undergoing CGA before elective TAVI, and a nonrandomized comparison group without preoperative CGA. Data on POD occurrence during the first 5 days after TAVI (primary outcome) and change in self-care ability index (SPI) between admission and discharge (secondary outcome) were collected from electronic health records and CGA data (exposure) by clinical assessment. To explore associations between (1) CGA and POD, and (2) CGA and SPI, multivariate logistic regression and linear regression models were applied adjusting for age, sex, BMI, and number of medications.Results: Among 435 patients (mean age 81.0 ± 5.6 years, 43.6% women, median [IQR] SPI at baseline 40 [39, 40] points), POD incidence was 14.3% in the CGA group vs 18.8% in the non-CGA group (P 0.219). Undergoing CGA before TAVI was not associated with the odds for POD (OR: 1.15; 95%CI: 0.65– 2.04) or improved SPI (P 0.073).Conclusion: We observed no association of CGA prior to TAVI with POD incidence or postoperative self-care, highlighting the need for additional studies investigating the effect of POD preventive measures in older TAVI patients integrated into a comprehensive geriatric comanagement program.Keywords: POPS, frail older adults, perioperative care, aortic stenosis, TAVI, delirium

6. Vortex jets generated by edge defects in current-carrying superconductor thin strips

Abstract

At sufficiently large transport currents $I_\mathrm{tr}$, a defect at the edge of a superconducting strip acts as a gate for the vortices entering into it. These vortices form a jet, which is narrow near the defect and expands due to the repulsion of vortices as they move to the opposite edge of the strip, giving rise to a transverse voltage $V_\perp$. Here, relying upon the equation of vortex motion under competing vortex-vortex and $I_\mathrm{tr}$-vortex interactions, we derive the vortex jet shapes in narrow ($\xi\ll w\lesssim\lambda_\mathrm{eff}$) and wide ($w\gg\lambda_\mathrm{eff}$) strips [$\xi$: coherence length, $w$: strip width, $\lambda_\mathrm{eff}$: effective penetration depth]. We predict a nonmonotonic dependence $V_\perp(I_\mathrm{tr})$ which can be measured with Hall voltage leads placed on the line $V_1V_2$ at a small distance $l$ apart from the edge defect and which changes its sign upon $l\rightarrow -l$ reversal. For narrow strips, we compare the theoretical predictions with experiment, by fitting the $V_\perp(I_\mathrm{tr},l)$ data for $1\,\mu$m-wide MoSi strips with single edge defects milled by a focused ion beam at distances $l = 16$-$80$\,nm from the line $V_1V_2$. For wide strips, the derived magnetic-field dependence of the vortex jet shape is in line with the recent experimental observations for vortices moving in Pb bridges with a narrowing. Our findings are augmented with the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations which reproduce the calculated vortex jet shapes and the $V_\perp(I_\mathrm{tr},l)$ maxima. Furthermore, with increase of $I_\mathrm{tr}$, the numerical modeling unveils the evolution of vortex jets to vortex rivers, complementing the analytical theory in the entire range of $I_\mathrm{tr}$., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Ultra-fast vortex motion has recently become a subject of extensive investigations, triggered by the fundamental question regarding the ultimate speed limits for magnetic flux quanta and enhancements of single-photon detectors. In this regard, the current-biased quench of a dynamic flux-flow regime - flux-flow instability (FFI) - has turned into a widely used method for the extraction of information about the relaxation of quasiparticles (unpaired electrons) in the superconductor. However, the large relaxation times $\tau_\epsilon$ deduced from FFI for many superconductors are often inconsistent with the fast relaxation processes implied by their single-photon counting capability. Here, we investigate FFI in $15$ nm-thick $182$ $\mu$m-wide MoSi strips with rough and smooth edges produced by laser etching and milling by a focused ion beam. For the strip with smooth edges we deduce, from the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) curve measurements, a factor of 3 larger critical currents $I_\mathrm{c}$, a factor of 20 higher maximal vortex velocities of 20 km/s, and a factor of 40 shorter $\tau_\epsilon$. We argue that for the deduction of the intrinsic $\tau_\epsilon$ of the material from the $I$-$V$ curves, utmost care should be taken regarding the edge and sample quality and such a deduction is justified only if the field dependence of $I_\mathrm{c}$ points to the dominating edge pinning of vortices., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Thin films of the high-temperature superconductor HgBa$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{6+\delta}$ have been prepared on SrTiO$_3$ substrates by pulsed-laser deposition of precursor films and subsequent annealing in mercury-vapor atmosphere. The microstructural properties of such films can vary considerably and have been analyzed by x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Whereas the resistivity is significantly enhanced in samples with coarse-grained structure, the Hall effect shows little variation. This disparity is discussed based on models for transport properties in granular materials. We find that, despite of the morphological variation, all samples have similar superconducting properties. The critical temperatures $T_c \sim 121.2$ K $\dots 122.0$ K, resistivity, and Hall data indicate that the samples are optimally doped. The analyses of superconducting order parameter fluctuations in zero and finite magnetic fields yield the in-plane $\xi_{ab}(0) \sim 2.3$ nm $\dots 2.8$ nm and out-of-plane $\xi_{c}(0) \sim 0.17$ nm $ \dots 0.24$ nm Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths at zero temperature. Abstract

A team of researchers at two institutions revised and analyzed a battery of instruments to assess the Critical Dispositions (InTASC, 2013) required in the CAEP (2016a) accreditation standards for teacher education programs. This research presents initial findings for the revised version updating previous results from validity and reliability studies of the first version (Wilkerson & Lang, 2011). An in-depth study of one of the instruments, now in two forms, is presented. Version 2 was necessary because the standards providing an operational definition of the construct measured were updated. In this study, data were collected from teacher education students, in-service teachers, and pre-school teachers (Form A = 1072; Form B = 372). Item analysis using Rasch modeling, results of a qualitative review of specific teacher candidates across multiple measures, and student/program improvement uses are discussed. The results indicated that evidence of validity and reliability is maintained in the new version, and student disposition measures were diagnostic and logical for students of different training and experience.

Abstract

Square arrays of sub-micrometer columnar defects in thin YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) films with spacings down to 300 nm have been fabricated by a He ion beam projection technique. Pronounced peaks in the critical current and corresponding minima in the resistance demonstrate the commensurate arrangement of flux quanta with the artificial pinning landscape, despite the strong intrinsic pinning in epitaxial YBCO films. Whereas these vortex matching signatures are exactly at predicted values in field-cooled experiments, they are displaced in zero-field cooled, magnetic-field ramped experiments, conserving the equidistance of the matching peaks and minima. These observations reveal an unconventional critical state in a cuprate superconductor with an artificial, periodic pinning array. The long-term stability of such out-of-equilibrium vortex arrangements paves the way for electronic applications employing fluxons., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Physical Review Applied

Contains fulltext : 306378.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access), BACKGROUND: Patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage who are receiving factor Xa inhibitors have a risk of hematoma expansion. The effect of andexanet alfa, an agent that reverses the effects of factor Xa inhibitors, on hematoma volume expansion has not been well studied. METHODS: We randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio, patients who had taken factor Xa inhibitors within 15 hours before having an acute intracerebral hemorrhage to receive andexanet or usual care. The primary end point was hemostatic efficacy, defined by expansion of the hematoma volume by 35% or less at 12 hours after baseline, an increase in the score on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale of less than 7 points (scores range from 0 to 42, with higher scores indicating worse neurologic deficit) at 12 hours, and no receipt of rescue therapy between 3 hours and 12 hours. Safety end points were thrombotic events and death. RESULTS: A total of 263 patients were assigned to receive andexanet, and 267 to receive usual care. Efficacy was assessed in an interim analysis that included 452 patients, and safety was analyzed in all 530 enrolled patients. Atrial fibrillation was the most common indication for factor Xa inhibitors. Of the patients receiving usual care, 85.5% received prothrombin complex concentrate. Hemostatic efficacy was achieved in 150 of 224 patients (67.0%) receiving andexanet and in 121 of 228 (53.1%) receiving usual care (adjusted difference, 13.4 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.6 to 22.2; P = 0.003). The median reduction from baseline to the 1-to-2-hour nadir in anti-factor Xa activity was 94.5% with andexanet and 26.9% with usual care (P<0.001). Thrombotic events occurred in 27 of 263 patients (10.3%) receiving andexanet and in 15 of 267 (5.6%) receiving usual care (difference, 4.6 percentage points; 95% CI, 0.1 to 9.2; P = 0.048); ischemic stroke occurred in 17 patients (6.5%) and 4 patients (1.5%), respectively. Abstract

Background and Objectives COVID-19–related inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy may increase the bleeding risk and lower the efficacy of revascularization treatments in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We aimed to evaluate the safety and outcomes of revascularization treatments in patients with AIS and COVID-19. Methods This was a retrospective multicenter cohort study of consecutive patients with AIS receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and/or endovascular treatment (EVT) between March 2020 and June 2021 tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. With a doubly robust model combining propensity score weighting and multivariate regression, we studied the association of COVID-19 with intracranial bleeding complications and clinical outcomes. Subgroup analyses were performed according to treatment groups (IVT-only and EVT). Results Of a total of 15,128 included patients from 105 centers, 853 (5.6%) were diagnosed with COVID-19; of those, 5,848 (38.7%) patients received IVT-only and 9,280 (61.3%) EVT (with or without IVT). Patients with COVID-19 had a higher rate of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) (adjusted OR 1.53; 95% CI 1.16–2.01), symptomatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SSAH) (OR 1.80; 95% CI 1.20–2.69), SICH and/or SSAH combined (OR 1.56; 95% CI 1.23–1.99), 24-hour mortality (OR 2.47; 95% CI 1.58–3.86), and 3-month mortality (OR 1.88; 95% CI 1.52–2.33). Patients with COVID-19 also had an unfavorable shift in the distribution of the modified Rankin score at 3 months (OR 1.42; 95% CI 1.26–1.60). Discussion Patients with AIS and COVID-19 showed higher rates of intracranial bleeding complications and worse clinical outcomes after revascularization treatments than contemporaneous non–COVID-19 patients receiving treatment. 22. Exploration of a Taxonomic Framework to New Instrument Development and Items Types: Dimensional Disaster or Informed Instruments?

Abstract

U.S. teacher educators are faced with serious challenges to demonstrate the quality of the graduates they prepare. These challenges are expressed in the country's fixation on accountability and testing. We are witnessing the growth of standardized tests and alternative routes to certification as panaceas intended to solve the teacher shortage crisis in most states. National accreditation and state program approval agencies are attempting to stem the tide through the ever-increasing demand for standards-based assessment data documenting teacher quality. The common set of standards used nationally for accreditation was developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers and promulgated by the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) in the form of ten principles. Each of the principles includes indicators written at the knowledge, skill, and dispositional levels, forming constructs that colleges are required to measure. Sadly, neither the profession nor the accreditors have realized the need for objective measurement. This is largely a function of what Stiggins bemoans as assessment illiteracy (2000). They are satisfied, at best, with ordinal scales for poorly constructed criteria on ill-defined tasks, or, at worst, with counting papers in portfolios constructed without regard to any form of psychometric consideration (Wilkerson and Lang, 2003). 23. Measuring Teacher Dispositions with Different Item Structures: An Application of the Rasch Model to a Complex Accreditation Requirement

Abstract

The construct of dispositions is defined in national standards, and colleges of education are required to assess candidate dispositions to meet accreditation requirements. Similarly, there is a need to review teacher dispositions in making hiring decisions about teachers, although this need may not yet be realized. Measurement is virtually non-existent in the area of teacher dispositions. On-line reviews of college accreditation reports indicate that colleges are attempting to assess dispositions without the use of sound measurement techniques or adequate definitions of the construct. The end result, of course, is a reliance on face validity. Rasch measurement provides a much needed solution to scaling the dispositions needed for good teaching when a credible construct is operationally used and visibly defined. This paper presents early work in the development of five related instruments measuring ten standards-based principles related to dispositions. The instruments use different item structures and response formats, which are aggregated into a single disposition scale that includes sub-scale scores for each of the principles. Appended are: (1) Scoring Guide for INTASC Principle 1 - ETQ and SRA; (2) Taxonomic Levels Adapted from Bloom, Krathwohl, and Masia (1964) for DAATS Scale Development; and (3) Measuring INTASC Principle 1--Five Instruments. Abstract

The INTASC Principles, when used as the basis for developing appropriate measurement instruments to assess teacher dispositions, provide a viable approach to the diagnosis and remediation of skill-related affective performance in teacher candidates and also to meeting NCATE requirements for Standard 1. In this symposium, the development and use of a battery of linked and calibrated disposition measures is discussed. This paper highlights the psychometric findings of a pilot study of three instruments designed to assess dispositions. 25. Accuracy vs. Validity, Consistency vs. Reliability, and Fairness vs. Absence of Bias: A Call for Quality

Abstract

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE, 2002) requires teacher education units to develop assessment systems and evaluate both the success of candidates and unit operations. Because of a stated, but misguided, fear of statistics, NCATE fails to use accepted terminology to assure the quality of institutional evaluative decisions with regard to the relevant standard (#2). Instead of "validity" and "reliability," NCATE substitutes "accuracy" and "consistency." NCATE uses the accepted terms of "fairness" and "avoidance of bias" but confuses them with each other and with validity and reliability. It is not surprising, therefore, that this Standard is the most problematic standard in accreditation decisions. This paper seeks to clarify the terms, using scholarly work and measurement standards as a basis for differentiating and explaining the terms. The paper also provides examples to demonstrate how units can seek evidence of validity, reliability, and fairness with either statistical or non-statistical methodologies, disproving the NCATE assertion that statistical methods provide the only sources of evidence. The lack of adherence to professional assessment standards and the knowledge base of the educational profession in both the rubric and web-based resource materials for this standard are discussed. From a policy perspective, such lack of clarity, incorrect use of terminology, and general misunderstanding of high quality assessment must lead to confused decision making at both the institutional and agency levels. This paper advocates for a return to the use of scholarship and standards in revising accreditation policy to end the confusion. (Contains 1 figure.)

Abstract

Determining the cross-cultural equivalence of multilingual tests is a challenge that is more complex than simple horizontal equating of test forms. This study examines the functioning of a trilingual test of preschool readiness to determine the equivalence. Different forms of the test have previously been examined using classical statistical techniques on bilingual forms (Lang, Chew & Schomber, 1992). Abstract

Investigations of the resistivity and the Hall effect as a function of electric field and temperature in the normal state and upper part of the superconducting transition of an optimally doped, very thin film of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-\delta}$ are reported. Using a fast pulsed-current technique allowed to reduce the self-heating of the sample and to reach electric fields up to 1 kV/cm. An intrinsic non-Ohmic behavior of the Hall conductivity above the critical temperature that appears to originate from two different, partially counteracting effects is revealed. The major contribution stems from the suppression of Aslamazov-Larkin superconducting fluctuations in high electric fields., Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

We show a low energy physical meaning of nonlinear supersymmetric general relativity (NLSUSY GR) in asymptotic Riemann-flat space-time by studying the vacuum structure of N = 2 linear supersymmetry (LSUSY) invariant QED, which is equivalent to N = 2 NLSUSY model, in two dimensional space-time. Two different vacuum field configurations of SO(3,1) isometry describe the two different physical vacua, i.e. one breaks spontaneously both U(1) and SUSY and the other breaks spontaneously SUSY alone, where the latter elucidates the mysterious relations between the cosmology and the (low energy) particle physics and gives a new insight into the origin of mass., Comment: Submitted for the SUSY07 proceedings, 4 pages, minor changes

Abstract

Abstract

Superconducting compounds of the family Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O have been the subject of intense study since the current record-holder for the highest critical temperature of a superconductor belongs to this class of materials. Thin films of the compound with two adjacent copper-oxide layers and a critical temperature of about 120 K were prepared by a two-step process that consists of the pulsed-laser deposition of precursor films and the subsequent annealing in mercury-vapor atmosphere. Like some other high-temperature superconductors, Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O exhibits a specific anomaly of the Hall effect, a double-sign change of the Hall coefficient close to the superconducting transition. We have investigated this phenomenon by measurements of the Hall effect at different angles between the magnetic field direction and the crystallographic c-axis. The results concerning the upper part of the transition, where the first sign change occurs, are discussed in terms of the renormalized fluctuation model for the Hall conductivity, adapted through the field rescaling procedure in order to take into account the arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field., Comment: to be published in Phys. 38. Out-of-plane fluctuation conductivity of layered superconductors in strong electric fields

Abstract

The non-Ohmic effect of a high electric field on the out-of-plane magneto-conductivity of a layered superconductor near the superconducting transition is studied in the frame of the Langevin approach to the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation. The transverse fluctuation conductivity is computed in the self-consistent Hartree approximation for an arbitrarily strong electric field and a magnetic field perpendicular to the layers. Our results indicate that high electric fields can be effectively used to suppress the out-of-plane fluctuation conductivity in high-temperature superconductors and a significant broadening of the transition induced by a strong electric field is predicted. Extensions of the results are provided for the case when the electric field is applied at an arbitrary angle with respect to the layers, as well as for the three-dimensional anisotropic regime of a strong interlayer coupling., Comment: to be published in Phys. Abstract

The excess Hall conductivity, resulting from thermal fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter, is calculated for a layered superconductor for an arbitrarily strong in-plane electric field and a perpendicular magnetic field in the frame of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. The fluctuation Hall conductivity is suppressed in high electric fields much stronger than the longitudinal one. Abstract

Measurements of the Hall effect and the resistivity on precisely-patterned YBCO thin films in magnetic fields B from 0.5 to 6 T oriented parallel to the sample crystallographic c axis reveal a sign reversal of the Hall coefficient for B <= 3 T. The data are compared to the full, quantitative expressions based on the renormalized fluctuation model for the Hall conductivity. The model offers a satisfactory understanding of the experimental results, for moderate fields and temperatures near the critical region, provided that the inhomogeneity of the critical temperature distribution is also taken into account. We also propose an approach how vortex pinning that strongly affects the magnitude of the Hall coefficient can be incorporated in the model., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys. Abstract

The paraconductivity, originating from critical superconducting order-parameter fluctuations in the vicinity of the critical temperature in a layered superconductor is calculated in the frame of the self-consistent Hartree approximation, for an arbitrarily strong electric field and zero magnetic field. The paraconductivity diverges less steep towards the critical temperature in the Hartree approximation than in the Gaussian one and it shows a distinctly enhanced variation with the electric field. Our results indicate that high electric fields can be effectively used to suppress order-parameter fluctuations in high-temperature superconductors., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Phys. Abstract

We present a study of Nernst effect in underdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in magnetic fields as high as 28T. At high fields, a sizeable Nernst signal was found to persist in presence of a field-induced non-metallic resistivity. By simultaneously measuring resistivity and the Nernst coefficient, we extract the entropy of vortex cores in the vicinity of this field-induced superconductor-insulator transition. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the thermo-electric Hall angle provides strong constraints on the possible origins of the finite Nernst signal above $T_c$, as recently discovered by Xu et al., Comment: 5 Pages inculding 4 figures

Abstract

Measurements of the Hall effect and the resistivity in twinned YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films in magnetic fields B oriented parallel to the crystallographic c-axis and to the twin boundaries reveal a double sign reversal of the Hall coefficient for B below 1 T. In high transport current densities, or with B tilted off the twin boundaries by 5 degrees, the second sign reversal vanishes. The power-law scaling of the Hall conductivity to the longitudinal conductivity in the mixed state is strongly modified in the regime of the second sign reversal. Our observations are interpreted as strong, disorder-type dependent vortex pinning and confirm that the Hall conductivity in high temperature superconductors is not independent of pinning., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
