2. China's building stock estimation and energy intensity analysis

Abstract: Reliable and objective data regarding building stock is essential for predicting and analyzing energy demand and carbon emission. However, China's building stock data is lacking. This study proposes a set of China building floor space estimation method (CBFSM) based on the improved building stock turnover model. Then it measures China's building stocks by vintage and type from 2000 to 2015, as well as building energy intensity (national level and provincial level) and energy-efficient buildings. Results showed that total building stocks increased significantly, rising from 35.2 billion m2 in 2000 to 63.6 billion m2 in 2015, with the average growth rate 4.0%. The deviations were well below 10% by comparing with China Population Census, which validated the reliability of CBFSM and the results. As for energy intensity, urban dwellings and rural dwellings showed relatively stable and increasing trend respectively. The commercial building energy intensity saw a downward trend during “12th Five Year Plan” period. This indicated the effectiveness of building energy efficiency work for commercial buildings since 2005.38.6 billion m2 residential dwellings and 5.7 billion m2 commercial buildings still need to be retrofitted in future. CBFSM can overcome shortages in previous studies. It can also provide Chinese government with technical support and data evidence to promote the building energy efficiency work.

Abstract: Petabytes of data are to be processed and stored requiring millions of CPU-years in high energy particle (HEP) physics event simulation. This enormous demand is handled in worldwide distributed computing centers as part of the LHC computing grid. These significant resources require a high quality and efficient production and the early detection of potential errors. In this article we present novel monitoring techniques in a Grid environment to collect quality measures during job execution. This allows online assessment of data quality information to avoid configuration errors or inappropriate settings of simulation parameters and therefore is able to save time and resources.

5. Evaluation of HRV estimation algorithms from PPG data using neural networks

Abstract: Heart rate variability (HRV) is a powerful measure to gain information on the activation of the central nervous system and is thus a strong indicator for the overall health and emotional state of a person. Currently, the gold standard for HRV analysis is the examination of R-peaks in electrocardiograms (ECG), which requires a placement of electrodes on the torso. This is often impracticable, especially for the use in daily routines or 24/7 measurements. Photoplethysmograms (PPG) are an alternative to ECG assessment and are easier to acquire, e.g. by using fitness trackers or smart watches. Nevertheless, PPG data is more susceptible to motion artifacts. Hence, goal of this work is to develop and evaluate an artificial neural network (ANN) approach to estimate the R-peak locations in complex PPG signals. Public data collections were used as benchmark to compare our ANN-based approach to state-of-the-art methods. Results show that ANNs can improve HRV estimation during motion. HRV estimations from baseline methods (decision-tree based and automatic multiscalebased peak detection) were compared with the best performing neural network (3L-GRU) using the TROIKA dataset with respect to reference parameters obtained from a manual selection of the peaks in ECG data. In most cases, the neural network based HRV estimation was closer to the reference HRV compared to baseline methods (lower μ and σ ) Also, σ is smaller for the best performing ANN approach across most HRV parameters. Inclusion of another PPG or acceleration channel did not affect HRV estimation. Although, the neural network learning approach outperforms conventional methods, the examined PPG-based HRV estimation has still accuracy limitations. Nonetheless, the proposed estimation approach opens up new directions for further improvement.

6. Differentiation of tuberculosis and metastatic cancer in the spine using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI

Abstract: © 2015 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg Purpose: To investigate the differences between imaging features of spinal tuberculosis (TB) and metastatic cancer measured by dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). The presentation of TB on convention MRI may not show the typical TB signs, and they may be mis-diagnosed as malignant diseases. DCE-MRI may provide additional information to help making differential diagnosis. Materials and methods: DCE-MRI was performed in 24 TB and 22 metastatic cancer patients. The DCE kinetic pattern was determined as “wash-out”, “plateau” or “persistent enhancement”. The characteristic DCE parameters were calculated from the signal intensity time course. The two-compartmental pharmacokinetic model was used to obtain Ktrans, which is the parameter associated with the delivery of MR contrast agents into the lesion, and kep, which is the parameter associated with the distribution and clearance of contrast agents from the lesion. Results: Of the 24 TB, one case showed the wash-out kinetic pattern, 12 cases showed the plateau pattern, and 11 cases showed the persistent enhancement pattern. Of the 22 metastatic cancers, 12 cases showed wash-out, 7 cases showed plateau, and 3 cases showed persistent enhancement patterns. Compared to the metastatic cancer group, the TB group had a lower kep (0.27 ± 0.15 vs. 0.49 ± 0.23 min−1, P < 0.001). The ROC analysis showed that the area under the curve was 0.780 for kep. Conclusions: DCE-MRI may provide additional information for differentiation between spinal TB and metastasis, when their manifestations on conventional imaging were similar.

9. Alterations in pulmonary function and sleep quality in Vietnamese adults recovering from mild-to-moderate COVID-19: A cross-sectional descriptive study.

Abstract: Introduction: Alterations in pulmonary function and sleep quality after COVID-19 infection have been documented in previous studies. However, few studies have investigated alterations in pulmonary function and sleep quality in individuals who have recovered from mild-to-moderate COVID-19, especially during the early recovery period. Methods: A total of 110 adults who had recovered from mild-to-moderate COVID-19 infection within the first 3 months, and 50 healthy adults as the control group were recruited from February to May 2022 at the Military Hospital 103, Hanoi, Vietnam, to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on pulmonary function and sleep quality. Pulmonary function was assessed using spirometry, and sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data analysis was conducted using a general linear model after adjusting for confounding factors. Results: The recovery group from COVID-19 infection showed lower adjusted means for FVC (%pred), FEV1 (%pred), FEV3 (%pred), FEF 200–1200 (L/s), FEF 200–1200 (%pred), PEF (L/s), PEF (%pred), sleep efficiency, and a higher adjusted mean for sleep duration compared to the control group. Moreover, decreased adjusted means for FVC (%pred), FEV1 (%pred), and FEV3 (%pred) were observed in the group of patients with higher sleep duration (>8 h). Conclusions: These findings highlight the impact of COVID-19 on lung function and sleep quality, particularly sleep duration and efficiency, in young and middle-aged adults during the early recovery period from mild-tomoderate COVID-19. Abstract: The pp -> pp pi0 differential cross section has been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for pion cms angles between 0 and 15.4 degrees at a proton beam energy of 0.8 GeV. The selection of diproton pairs with an excitation energy E_{pp} < 3 MeV ensures that the final pp system is dominantly in the spin-singlet 1S0 state. The kinematics are therefore very similar to those of pp -> d pi+ but with different spin and isospin transitions. The results will thus provide a crucial extra test of pion production models in nucleon-nucleon collisions. The cross sections, which are over two orders of magnitude smaller than those of pp -> d pi+, show a forward dip, even stronger than that seen at lower energies. Abstract: Measurements on the eta meson production in proton-deuteron collisions have been performed using the COSY-11 facility at COSY Juelich. Here we present preliminary results on total and differential cross sections for the pd --> 3He eta reaction at five excess energies between Q = 5.1 and Q = 40.6 MeV. The obtained angular distributions for the emitted eta mesons in the center of mass system expose a transition from an almost isotropic emission to a highly anisotropic distribution. Abstract: Due to the high sensitivity of the N N --> N N gamma reaction to the nucleon-nucleon potential, Bremsstrahlung radiation is used as a tool to investigate details of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Such investigations can be performed at the cooler synchrotron COSY in the Research Centre Juelich, by dint of the COSY-11 detection system. Abstract: A measurement of the analyzing power $A_y$ of the $\vec{p}d \to (pp) + n$ reaction was carried out at beam energies of 0.5 and 0.8 GeV by detection of a fast forward proton pair of small excitation energy $E_{pp} < 3$ MeV. The kinematically complete experiment made use of the ANKE spectrometer at the internal beam of COSY and a deuterium cluster--jet target. For the first time the $S$--wave dominance in the fast diproton is experimentally demonstrated in this reaction. While at $T_p=0.8$ GeV the measured analyzing power $A_y$ vanishes, it reaches almost unity at $T_p=0.5$ GeV for neutrons scattered at $\theta_n^{c.m.}=167^\circ$. The results are compared with a model taking into account one--nucleon exchange, single scattering and $\Delta$ (1232) excitation in the intermediate state. The model describes fairly well the unpolarized cross section obtained earlier by us and the analyzing power at 0.8 GeV, it fails to reproduce the angular dependence of $A_y$ at 0.5 GeV., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract: The production of K^+ mesons in pA (A = D, C, Cu, Ag, Au) collisions has been investigated at the COoler SYnchrotron COSY-J\"ulich for beam energies T_p = 1.0 - 2.3 GeV. Double differential inclusive pC cross sections at forward angles theta < 12 degrees as well as the target-mass dependence of the K^+ momentum spectra have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer. Far below the free NN threshold at T_{NN}=1.58 GeV the spectra reveal a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus. From the target-mass dependence of the cross sections at higher energies, the repulsive in-medium potential of K^+ mesons can be deduced. Abstract: Recent years have shown steady progress in research towards molecular electronics [1,2], where molecules have been investigated as switches [3-5], diodes [6], and electronic mixers [7]. In much of the previous work a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope was employed to address an individual molecule. As this arrangement does not provide long-term stability, more recently metal-molecule-metal links have been made using break junction devices [8-10]. However, it has been difficult to establish unambiguously that a single molecule forms the contact [11]. Here, we show that a single H2 molecule can form a stable bridge between Pt electrodes. In contrast to results for other organic molecules, the bridge has a nearly perfect conductance of one quantum unit, carried by a single channel. The H2-bridge provides a simple test system and a fundamental step towards understanding transport properties of single-molecule devices., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: By means of the COSY-11 detection system, using a stochastically cooled proton beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY and a hydrogen cluster target, we have performed a high statistics measurement of the pp --> pp eta reaction at an excess energy of Q = 15.5 MeV. The experiment was based on the four-momentum determination of both outgoing protons. This permits to identify pp --> pp eta events and to derive the complete kinematical information of the eta-p-p-system allowing for subsequent investigations of the eta-p interaction. 27. Langmuir probe diagnostic studies of pulsed hydrogen plasmas in planar microwave reactors

Abstract: Langmuir probe techniques have been used to study time and spatially resolved electron densities and electron temperatures in pulse-modulated hydrogen discharges in two different planar microwave reactors (fmicrowave= 2.45 GHz, tpulse= 1 ms). The reactors are (i) a standing-wave radiative slotted waveguide reactor and (ii) a modified travelling-wave radiative slotted waveguide reactor, which generate relatively large plasmas over areas from about 350 cm^2 to 500 cm^2. The plasma properties of these reactor types are of particular interest as they have been used for basic research and for plasma processing, e.g. for surface treatment and layer deposition. In the present study the pressures and microwave powers in the reactors were varied between 33 and 55 Pa and 600 and 3600 W, respectively. In regions with high electromagnetic fields shielded Langmuir probes were used to avoid disturbances of the probe characteristic. Close to the microwave windows of the reactors both the electron density and the electron temperature showed strong inhomogeneities. In the standing-wave reactor the inhomogeneity was found to be spatially modulated by the position of the slots. The maximum value of the electron temperature was about 10 eV and the electron density varied between 0.2 and 14*10^11 cm^-3. The steady state electron temperature in a discharge pulse was reached within a few tens of microseconds whereas the electron density needed some hundreds of microseconds to reach a steady state. Depending on the reactor the electron density reached a maximum between 80 and 200 microseconds after the beginning of the pulse., Comment: 16 pages including 18 figures. Abstract: The production of K+ and K- mesons in elementary proton-proton collision has been investigated at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY in Juelich. A high quality proton beam with low emittance and small momentum spread permitted to study the creation of these mesons very close to the kinematical threshold. The energy dependence of the total cross section is investigated using internal beam facilities providing a high accuracy particle momentum determination as well as an external non-magnetic detection setup with a large geometrical acceptance. The determination of the four-momentum vectors for all ejectiles of each registered event gives the complete kinematical information allowing to study the interaction of the outgoing particles. Abstract: We describe a novel technique for comparing total cross sections for the reactions pp --> pp pi(0), pp --> pp eta, and pp --> pp eta' close to threshold. The initial and final state proton-proton interactions are factored out of the total cross section, and the dependence of this reduced cross section on the volume of phase space is discussed. Different models of the proton-proton interaction are compared. We argue that the scattering length of the S-wave eta'-proton interaction is of the order of 0.1 fm., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Total cross sections for the pp --> pp eta' reaction have been measured in the excess energy range from Q = 1.53 MeV to Q = 23.64 MeV. The experiment has been performed at the internal installation COSY-11 using a stochastically cooled proton beam of the COoler SYnchrotron COSY and a hydrogen cluster target. The determined energy dependence of the total cross section weakens the hypothesis of the S-wave repulsive interaction between the eta' meson and the proton. New data agree well with predictions based on the phase-space distribution modified by the proton-proton final-state-interaction (FSI) only., Comment: 12 pages, 1 table, 4 figures

Abstract: Zusammenfassung: In den letzten Jahren sind die Verdachtsanzeigen bei den Unfallversicherungsträgern (UVT) für beruflich bedingte Hauterkrankungen deutlich zurückgegangen. Dies wird u. a. auf die Etablierung umfassender Präventionsmaßnahmen durch die UVT zurückgeführt. Dennoch kommt es auch weiterhin zu schweren Berufsdermatosen, die sich unter einer ambulanten Therapie nicht ausreichend bessern oder rezidivieren, sodass die Aufgabe der schädigenden Tätigkeit droht. In diesen Fällen haben sich inzwischen im Rahmen der tertiären Individualprävention stationäre Rehabilitationsmaßnahmen bewährt. Sie werden als 3-wöchiges stationäres Heilverfahren durchgeführt, dem sich eine 3-wöchige Arbeitsunfähigkeitsphase zur weiteren Stabilisierung des Hautzustands anschließt. Der stationäre Aufenthalt beinhaltet neben einer intensiven dermatologischen Therapie auch eingehende gesundheitspädagogische und psychologische Schulungen. Besonderer Wert wird auf die Auswahl individuell geeigneter Schutzhandschuhe und Hautschutzmittel sowie deren ergotherapeutische Erprobung gelegt. Bei den bisherigen Evaluierungen zeigte sich, dass auf diese Weise bei etwa 2/3 der Betroffenen, denen konkret die Berufsaufgabe drohte, ein Berufsverbleib erzielt werden konnte.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung: Die verbreiteten Referenzwerte der ventilatorischen Lungenfunktion wurden vornehmlich an Probanden im mittleren Lebensabschnitt gewonnen. Für Personen >65 Jahre muss eine Extrapolation über den Geltungsbereich der Sollwertfunktion durchgeführt werden. Wir untersuchten die Übereinstimmung dieser Referenzwerte mit tatsächlich gemessenen Lungenfunktionsparametern in 3 Altersgruppen (20–40, 41–65 und 66–90 Jahre) lungengesunder Kontrollen sowie an silikosekranken Patienten im Alter zwischen 65 und 80 Jahren. Laut den Ergebnissen dieser Untersuchungen ist für die pneumologischen Routineuntersuchungen durchaus ein Bezug auf die Sollwerte der europäischen Gemeinschaft für Kohle und Stahl (EGKS) über den angegebenen Altersbereich von 20–70 Jahren hinaus möglich. Aufgrund des demografischen Wandels, der längeren Lebensarbeitszeit sowie der sich in den letzten 4 Jahrzehnten veränderten anthropometrischen Messgrößen sollte jedoch die Erstellung aktueller Sollwerte vorangetrieben werden, damit auch ältere und kleinere Patienten bezüglich der Referenzwerte adäquat vertreten sind.
