Abstract

Deviations from expectations have been claimed for solar, atmospheric and high energy prompt neutrinos from charm decay. This information, supplemented only by the existing very good upper limits for oscillations of the $\nu_{\mu}$ at accelerator energies, is used as input to a phenomenological three-flavour analysis of neutrino mixing. The solution found is unique and completely determines the mass eigenstates as well as the mixing matrix relating mass and flavour eigenstates. Assuming the mass eigenstates to follow the hierarchy $m_{1} \ll m_{2} \ll m_{3}$, their values are found to be $m_{1} \ll 10^{-2}$ eV, $m_{2} = (0.18 \pm 0.06)$ eV, $m_{3} = (19.4 \pm 0.7)$ eV. These masses are in agreement with the leptonic quadratic hierarchy of the see-saw model and large enough to render energy-independent any oscillation-induced phenomenon in solar neutrino physics observable on Earth. This possibility is not excluded by the present knowledge of solar neutrino physics. The mixing angles are determined to be $\theta_{12} = 0.55 \pm 0.08$, $\theta_{13} = 0.38 \pm 0.06$, $\theta_{23} < 0.03$. Small values of $\theta_{23}$ are typical of any solution in which $m_{3}$ lies in the cosmological interesting region. The solution found is not in serious contradiction with any of the present limits to the existence of neutrino oscillations. Abstract

To evaluate the effects of rehabilitation (physical and cognitive) treatments on the diagnosis severity and Disability Rating Scale (DRS) scores, adjusted for a number of potential confounders measured at baseline, in a large cohort of patients with disorders of consciousness across time.An observational, longitudinal (2 evaluations), multicenter project was made in 90 Italian centers.Patients (N=364) with a diagnosis of disorders of consciousness.Primary outcome was the severity of diagnosis, expressed on an ordinal scale (OtherMCSVSdeath). In the Other group were included patients who emerged from an MCS and recovered consciousness. The secondary outcome was the DRS score (range of 0-30 with 30 being the worst value). The DRS is a tool used to define the level of residual disability, commonly used to classify the level of functional impairment in patients with acquired brain injury. Both outcomes were measured for each wave.A total of 364 subjects having a complete set of demographic, clinical, and pharmacologic data were included in the propensity score (PS) analysis. Results showed that the rehabilitation treatments (physical and cognitive) reduced the clinical worsening over time in both severity diagnosis and DRS (around 6.5 points) in patients with disorders of consciousness across different propensity score strategies (ie, PS matching, PS adjustment, and PS-weighted procedures). In addition, cognitive protocols seem to be limited to patients with a median value of DRS=23.Our propensity score analysis suggests that rehabilitation treatment protocols seem effective and should be applied to a broader spectrum of patients with disorders of consciousness.

4. An insight into effectiveness and potential damage in removing limewash from wall paintings. An approach based on model samples

Abstract

The mechanism, the effectiveness, and the potential damage during limewash removal from wall painting models were evaluated for agar gels and water-based pads constituted by ArbocelTM BWW 40 cellulosic fibre. Cleaning materials in different formulations were compared: pure and with additives (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA, and ammonium citrate tribasic, TAC) in different percentages (2% and 3%). The cleaning action was evaluated on laboratory model samples, prepared with hematite a fresco and an egg-based tempera with limewash overlayers. Calcium and iron extracted by cleaning materials were quantified by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The potential damage to the hematite painting layers was also studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. A visual observation of the limewash detachment induced by the overall cleaning was also performed. Results suggest that limewash removal mainly occurs by aqueous solution release from the cleaning system, with subsequent layer wetting, probable layer swelling, weakening and complete or partial detachment. A stronger limewash adhesion on the hydrophilic fresco surface than on tempera, was observed. None of the used cleaning materials resulted harmful to the integrity of the hematite layer underneath the limewash. A small damage in terms of extracted iron was detected in the cleaning systems after direct contact with fresco and tempera hematite layers; a “protective” effect by the tempera layer was observed for the pigment, due to the organic binder and triggered by the hydrophobic content of the egg-based medium. Cleaning materials with additives are more harmful than pure materials, with a greater coordinating ability for EDTA than for TAC, which increases with chelator percentage. Abstract

The concept of enterprise 4.0 represents an extension of the initial industry 4.0, linked to the evolution of the industrial context towards a highly innovative and digital scenario. The use of technology contributes, through various levers, to the agro-ecological and digital transition: by improving farming efficiency (higher yield for the same environmental impact), by precision farming (adapting the different operations to the needs of vegetation or animals) and through the introduction of specialized machinery capable of helping the farmer to "close the cycle" (e.g., recycling of organic effluents) or to take advantage of biodiversity (i.e., with agro-equipment adapted to mixed crops). This research addresses these issues and aimed to understand the ability of farms to implement projects linked to the "twin transition" for improving competitiveness and capture high-value jobs in a local area. To this end 23 farmers were involved in a semi-structured interview to assess their ability to implement projects linked to green and digital transformation. The results highlight the difficulty both for farmers to welcome this innovative drive and for the local area (the north-eastern area of Sicily) to develop new skills and invest in the training of future generations to strengthen competitiveness. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Literature shows that occurrence of comorbidities in people with severe acquired brain injury (sABI) is a common problem in rehabilitation stay. Consequently, patients could require an increase of interventions for diagnosis and treatment of clinical conditions, with a reduction of the rehabilitative take in charge for both clinical and organizational aspects. AIM: The first aim was to evaluate the rate of clinical conditions of sABI patients at admission in rehabilitation and the types of rehabilitative interventions performed in the first week; second objective was to explore the impact of clinical conditions on real rehabilitative take in charge. DESIGN: Cross sectional study. SETTING: Inpatient rehabilitation centers. POPULATION: The study included data from 586 sABI patients. METHODS: Collected data regarded anamnestic information, functional status assessed by means of Glasgow Outcome Scale, Levels of cognitive functioning, Early Rehabilitation Barthel Index, comorbidities at admission and type of rehabilitative interventions carried out in first week of rehabilitation stay. Spearman correlation coefficients were applied to detect possible correlations between the number of treatments in first week and clinical variables; through a multiple regression analysis the effect of patient’s characteristics on rehabilitative take in charge was explored. RESULTS: Data from the sABI patients: mean age 55.1±17.1 years; etiology of sABI was vascular in 315 patients (53.8%), anoxic in 83 (14.2%), neoplastic in 17 (2.9%), infectious in 15 (2.6%), traumatic in 150 (25.6%); 6 subjects (1%) presented a mixed etiology. Need of cardiorespiratory monitoring, pressure sores, infections or presence of multi drug resistant bacteria were the most frequent comorbidities. The regression analysis showed that severe neurological and clinical conditions, acute organ failure, cardio-respiratory instability and paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity significantly limit access to rehabilitative sessions. Conclusions In sABI patients clinical comorbidities requiring elevated care assistance are frequent at admission in rehabilitation from acute wards and may interfere with rehabilitative take in charge. Clinical rehabilitation impact The knowledge of clinical complexity of sABI patients may improve their care pathways, promoting early and appropriate transition from acute care to rehabilitation settings.

Abstract

Guidance on pharmacotherapy of neurobehavioural sequelae post-acquired brain injury (ABI) is limited. Clinicians face the choice of prescribing off-label. This survey assesses prescribing practice and off-label use of psychotropic medications in Italian brain injury rehabilitation centres and factors associated with atypical antipsychotics use.Centres were identified through the roster of the Italian Society for Rehabilitation Medicine. Information was collected through a structured questionnaire. This study calculated the prevalence of centres reporting to use off-label individual medications and unconditional logistic regression Odds Ratio (OR), with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of atypical antipsychotics use.Psychotropic medications were commonly used. More than 50% of the 35 centres (participation ratio 87.5%) reported to use off-label selected antipsychotics, mostly for agitation (90.5%) and behavioural disturbances (19.0%), and antidepressants, mostly for insomnia (37.5%) and pain (25.0%). Atypical antipsychotic use was directly associated with age40 years (OR = 2.68; 95% CI = 1.25-5.76), recent ABI (1.74; 0.74-4.09), not with reported off-label use (0.98; 0.44-2.18).In clinical practice, the effectiveness and safety of medications, in particular off-label, should be systematically monitored. Studies are needed to improve the quality of evidence guiding pharmacotherapy and to evaluate effectiveness and safety of off-label prescribing.

Abstract

The first Fischer-type hydrazino(methyl)carbene complex has been synthesized from the appropriate acetylhydrazine and Na2Cr(CO)5; the new complex has some peculiar features in comparison with aminocarbene complexes: (i) the E rotamer can be completely transformed into the Z rotamer through the formation of its anion, and (ii) as a result of a thermal reaction, the Z isomer affords a new unusual chelate hydrazino(methyl)carbene complex that can be mono- or dialkylated.

Ortho-tert-butylcalixarenes 3, 4 and 5 with exo-hydroxy groups were synthesised by tin tetrachloride-promoted condensation of 2,2'-dihydroxy-3,3'-di-tert-butyldiphenylmethane 6 with formaldehyde. While 1H NMR analysis of compounds 3, 4 and 5 revealed a considerable annular flexibility in CDCl3 solution, their X-ray single crystal analysis showed the presence of a strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the proximal OH groups.

Abstract

To define the role of functional tricuspid insufficiency and right ventricular (RV) failure in patients with mitral disease, the data of 121 patients with secondary tricuspid insufficiency that underwent mitral valve replacement (MVR) from January 1982 to December 1987 were analyzed. The mitral hemodynamic lesion was: stenosis in 41 patients (33.9%); insufficiency in 11 (9.1%) and mixed stenosis and insufficiency in 69 (57.0%). NYHA functional class was: II in 4 patients (3.3%), III in 78 (64.5%) and IV in 39 (32.2%). In 100 cases (group 1) with tricuspid insufficiency defined as moderate or severe, a De Vega annuloplasty was performed while in 21 (group 2) with mild tricuspid insufficiency, no tricuspid surgical procedure was performed. Hospital deaths occurred in 17 of 121 patients [14% (CL 10.8-17.0)]. There was no significant difference in hospital mortality between group 1 and group 2 (15% vs 9.5%; P = 0.75). Incremental risk factors for hospital mortality as determined by multivariate analysis, include: cardiothoracic ratio (P = 0.0016), total aortic cross-clamp time (P = 0.006), associated cardiac disease (P = 0.0209) and emergency operations (P = 0.0318). Mean follow-up of surviving patients was 50.1 +/- 28.1 months. Late deaths occurred in 16 patients [15.4% (CL 11.7-18.7)]. The actuarial survival rate was 85.6% and 73.8% at 5 and 9 years, respectively. Nine patients [8.6% (CL 5.9-11.3)] required reoperation. There was no significant difference between group 1 and group 2 in the rate of late cardiac related deaths (5.9% vs 5.3%, P = 0.66) and of tricuspid reoperations (4.7% vs 5.3%, P = 0.62).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract

The reduction of waste is a key objective for the EU. This issue has gained a greater media interest only recently, due to its importance in terms of sustainability. Within the agri-food system, waste affects the whole chain. The main aim of this research is to identify the quantity of waste of bread and bread derivates in the analyzed sales points and to understand whether or not the variables relative to the analyzed socio-economic context affect this phenomenon. The research project aims at analyzing the behaviour of the sales point's owner regarding the food raw materials' supply procedure and frequency. The aim is also to analyze the size of the food supply and the relative sale in order to calculate the inventories; to identify the groups of foodstuffs which have a greater waste; to analyze the management of redundancies and to identify the most frequent waste disposal methods. The instrument used in this survey is a questionnaire structured with multiple-choice questions. The choice of the sample has been made by only taking into account the companies producing bread and oven-produced products. In order to obtain indications as exhaustive, truthful and consistent with reality as possible, 113 companies located in the territory of Southern Italy (Sicily) have been identified.
