As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve rapidly, its integration into nursing education is inevitable. This article presents a narrative exploring the implementation of generative AI in nursing education and offers a guide for its strategic use. The exploration begins with an examination of the broader societal impact and uses of artificial intelligence, recognizing its pervasive presence and the potential it holds. Thematic analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats collected from nurse educators across the southeastern United States in this case-based descriptive study used four codes: time, innovation, critical thinking, and routine tasks. Findings from the qualitative analysis revealed the overarching themes that AI can serve as both a tool and a tyrant, offering opportunities for efficiency and innovation while posing challenges of transparency, ethical use, and AI literacy. By establishing ethical guidelines, fostering AI literacy, and promoting responsible implementation in nursing education with a clear articulation of expectations, nurse educators can guide and guard the use of generative AI. Despite the concerns, the transformative potential of generative AI to enhance teaching methodologies and prepare students for the interprofessional health-care workforce provides a multitude of innovative opportunities for teaching and learning. Men comprise a small minority of the nursing workforce and there has been little increase in the numbers of men in nursing during the last three decades. This study investigated lived experiences of male nurses to understand reasons men remain a small percentage of the nursing workforce. Participants shared similar and diverse experiences. Findings included focused discussion on participants' career motivations and strategies for success in nursing. Motivators included family influences, desire to care, and job benefits. Success strategies included assimilation, organizational involvement, and mentorship. This study highlights the need for nurses to be ambassadors for diversity and inclusivity and can be used to improve nursing recruitment efforts aimed at men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the lived experiences of male nurses in today's healthcare environment to understand the persistently low numbers of men in nursing. Design: This study used interpretive description methodology, which aligns with nursing's approach to knowledge discovery by acknowledging the evolution and complexity of shared and individual experiences. Methods: Participants, (N = 11), were recruited through the American Association for Men in Nursing using purposive sampling. Focused interviews were conducted between May 2018 – June 2018. Interviews were semi‐structured, guided by open‐ended questions and video and audio recorded. Data were analysed according to study design with categories and themes extracted using reliability measures. Results: This study's findings reflected the unique experiences of each participant in a primarily female dominated work environment in clinical and academic settings. Our study identified thematic categories of role expectations and workplace relations for the men in the study. Role expectations were influenced by sociocultural views, professional acceptance and patient/family perceptions. Workplace relations were associated with being male, social cliques and peer support. Conclusion: Participants shared similar and distinctly individual experiences. Findings from this study indicate there has been progress toward improving male presence in nursing but additional efforts are needed to increase inclusivity. Findings can be used to make recommendations for professional change in nursing, strengthen diversity by refining ways to recruit more men, enhance patients' experiences and improve experiences for future male nurses. Background: Students can find interacting within a healthcare team challenging. It is important for students to understand their role and respect those of other healthcare team members. Interprofessional education (IPE) is a strategy for exploring the roles of self and others within the team. Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate nursing students' perceptions of roles and responsibilities following an IPE experience. Methods: Students in an undergraduate baccalaureate degree nursing programme participated in a two-day IPE event with students in the physician's assistant's (PA) programme, pharmacy programme, and physical therapy (PT) programme. Findings: Self-perception and the perception of others were two main themes that emerged. The results suggested that roles and responsibilities are often misunderstood. Conclusion: Educators must be committed to educating our future healthcare workforce on role expectations and responsibilities within an individual's own profession and that of others. Purpose: This descriptive field study examines processes used to evaluate simulation for senior-level Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students in a capstone course, discusses challenges related to simulation evaluation, and reports the relationship between faculty evaluation of student performance and National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) first-time passing rates. Methods: Researchers applied seven terms used to rank BSN student performance (n = 41, female, ages 22-24 years) in a senior-level capstone simulation. Faculty evaluation was correlated with students' NCLEX-RN outcomes. Results: Students evaluated as "lacking confidence" and "flawed" were less likely to pass the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt. Conclusions: Faculty evaluation of capstone simulation performance provided additional evidence of student preparedness for practice in the RN role, as evidenced by the relationship between the faculty assessment and NCLEX-RN success. Implications: Simulation has been broadly accepted as a powerful educational tool that may also contribute to verification of student achievement of program outcomes and readiness for the RN role. PROBLEM Significant off-campus domestic study away experiences have been shown to be a transformative active learning environment for students and achieve similar learning outcomes as study abroad programs. METHODS This manuscript describes the conception, development, and pedagogical approach of a faculty-led domestic study away experience in New York City for pre-licensure and post-licensure nursing students as an active learning strategy for developing cultural competence. Students participated in service-learning activities that illuminated the realities and challenges persons from other cultures face as they interact with health care in a culture that is not their own. FINDINGS In partnership with New York Cares©, students were immersed in well-established ongoing sustainable community-based projects. These experiences fostered reflective conversations between community members, student participants, and faculty regarding social factors, cultural issues and needs, and global issues and trends. CONCLUSIONS Through the New York study away program, students were able to broaden their perspectives about social factors and culture beyond geographic or ethnic boundaries and apply these service experiences to their nursing practice. Study away programs are an excellent strategy for nursing educators to prepare students for care of multicultural populations and for proficiency in cultural competency within the globalization of the United States. In this position paper, the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians examine the state of graduate medical education (GME) financing in the United States and recent proposals to reform GME funding. They make a series of recommendations to reform the current funding system to better align GME with the needs of the nation's health care workforce. These recommendations include using Medicare GME funds to meet policy goals and to ensure an adequate supply of physicians, a proper specialty mix, and appropriate training sites; spreading the costs of financing GME across the health care system; evaluating the true cost of training a resident and establishing a single per-resident amount; increasing transparency and innovation; and ensuring that primary care residents receive training in well-functioning ambulatory settings that are financially supported for their training roles. Student engagement in scholarly reading and critical thinking contributes to nursing science. However, graduate students often lack the skills and experience needed to read and analyze scholarly writings in depth. This case example describes use of portable document format technology with reading prompts to improve student scholarship in a master of science in nursing program. Theory and research guided development of the visible reading innovation. Student work with this pilot assignment sequence indicates an increase in student engagement with the text, as evidenced by student comment content, comment spacing throughout the text, and text integration into a summative writing assignment. Aim The purpose is to explore the concept of connect in multiple disciplines for further development of knowledge and theories in nursing and to establish a clear understanding of this construct. Background Connect has meanings rooted in the discipline of business, technology, and transportation which influence how the term is defined in nursing. Several definitions have been established that demonstrate the concepts of connect in other disciplines. Design A concept exploration design was used for the identification and explication of the term connect to describe, explain, and predict this interprofessional phenomenon. Review Methods The databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, PRO- Quest, and EBSCO were searched for articles through title and abstract screening using connect, connectedness, and connectivity. Results Three specific components were identified in the exploration: (a) respect, (b) trust, and (c) mutuality. Current literature validated the need for an empirical concept analysis. Conclusions This concept exploration provides the first step in understanding the context and meaning of connect in nursing profession. By determining if connections exist and quantifying the level of connections, a level of congruency between the nurse and the patient can be established to determine the best plan of care and goals. Phospholemman (PLM) regulates [Na+]i, [Ca2+]i and contractility through its interactions with Na+-K+-ATPase (NKA) and Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX1) in the heart. Both expression and phosphorylation of PLM are altered after myocardial infarction (MI) and heart failure. We tested the hypothesis that absence of PLM regulation of NKA and NCX1 in PLM-knockout (KO) mice is detrimental. Three weeks after MI, wild-type (WT) and PLM-KO hearts were similarly hypertrophied. PLM expression was lower but fractional phosphorylation was higher in WT-MI compared to WT-sham hearts. Left ventricular ejection fraction was severely depressed in WT-MI but significantly less depressed in PLM-KO-MI hearts despite similar infarct sizes. Compared with WT-sham myocytes, the abnormal [Ca2+], transient and contraction amplitudes observed in WT-MI myocytes were ameliorated by genetic absence of PLM. In addition, NCX1 current was depressed in WT-MI but not in PLM-KO-MI myocytes. Despite improved myocardial and myocyte performance, PLM-KO mice demonstrated reduced survival after MI. Our findings indicate that alterations in PLM expression and phosphorylation are important adaptations post-MI, and that complete absence of PLM regulation of NKA and NCX1 is detrimental in post-MI animals. Unlike other professional healthcare disciplines, the profession of nursing has multiple levels of entry. Recently, several states have proposed legislation to mandate completion of baccalaureate education after 10 years of nursing licensure. This article examines the proposals, statistics, strategies, and other relevant literature on baccalaureate education for nurses and the positive outcomes associated with a more highly educated nursing workforce. The proposal recognizes the entry level preparation provided by associate degree nurses and is an innovative solution that offers a balance between multiple entry levels into practice and continued educational preparation. Through a combination of the entry level preparation of associate degree nurses and baccalaureate education, a stronger nursing workforce can be created and patient outcomes and quality of care improved. This case report reviews anesthetic management and medical considerations for a pregnant patient with a history of pseudotumor cerebri (PTC). The 24-year-old woman, gravida 2, paragravida 0, spontaneous abortion 1, was in active labor at an estimated 38 weeks' gestation and had been given a diagnosis of PTC 4 years earlier. This patient first experienced global headaches and blurred vision at age 20 years. At the time of onset of her headache symptoms, she underwent a full diagnostic workup and detailed neurologic examination, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and a lumbar puncture. The MRI was normal. Her lumbar puncture showed elevated cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) pressures and normal CSF composition. The patient's initial symptoms of headache and blurred vision were managed with medication and serial lumbar punctures. The patient was free of PTC symptoms on admission for labor. A lumbar epidural was placed for labor analgesia. The patient delivered a healthy infant after approximately 10.5 hours of patient-controlled epidural analgesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Burnout among health-care professionals is a growing problem having a sizeable impact on patient safety and health care as a whole. High levels of resilience in health-care professionals have been associated with safer care environments, improved health outcomes, higher quality care, and improved caregiver well-being and mental health. Resilience education can improve personal and professional resilience. Objective: The goal of this project was to evaluate a resilience education program to improve measures of burnout and resilience in health-care professionals. Design: A quantitative cross-sectional pretest/posttest design was used. Setting: The resilience education program was implemented in a large, not-for-profit health-care system in the southeastern United States. Methods: Participants completed the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-25 (CD-RISC-25) immediately before the workshop and 2 weeks afterward. Participants also completed an evaluation survey one day after the education. Results: Scores on the CD-RISC-25 showed statistically significant increases in resilience qualities after the education. Although not statistically significant, burnout as measure by CBI scores decreased following the workshop. Conclusion: A relatively short educational program can positively impact resilience and burnout levels in health-care professionals. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among the variables of the dietary consumption and the anthropometric measurements of Filipino Americans (FAs). The study sample consisted of 128 participants residing in the US who completed two questionnaires and biometric measurements. Strong positive correlations between the consumption of fat and sugar and body mass index (BMI) among the participants were found. In contrast, the correlations between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and BMI were strongly negative. Aim: We used the Objective Structured Teaching Exercise (OSTE) format as a faculty development tool to train and evaluate faculty on how to teach professionalism and medical ethics to students in clinical settings. Methods: The process for the design, development and implementation of OSTEs consisted of five phases: (1) performing a literature review and student needs assessment, (2) developing the OSTE cases and performance checklists, (3) recruiting and training of standardized students, (4) conducting a mock training session and (5) organizing faculty development workshops using OSTEs. Results: Twenty clinical faculty members participated in one of three half-day OSTE workshops offered. This article reviews the history, current status, and future plans of the Partners HealthCare Center for Connected Health (the Center). Established in 1995 by Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals, the Center develops strategies to move healthcare from the hospital and doctor's office into the day-to-day lives of patients. It leverages information technology to help manage chronic conditions, maintain health and wellness, and improve adherence to prescribed regimen, patient engagement, and clinical outcomes. Since inception, it has served over 30,000 patients. The Center's core functions include videoconference-based real-time virtual visits, home vital sign monitoring, store-and-forward online consultations, social media, mobile technology, and other novel methods of providing care and enabling health and wellness remotely and independently of traditional time and geographic constraints. It offers a wide range of services, programs, and research activities. The Center comprises over 40 professionals with various technical and professional skills. Internally within Partners HealthCare, the role of the Center is to collaborate, guide, advise, and support the experimentation with and the deployment and growth of connected health technologies, programs, and services. Annually, the Center engages in a deliberative planning process to guide its annual research and operational agenda. The Center enjoys a diversified revenue stream. Funding sources include institutional operating budget/research funds from Partners HealthCare, public and private competitive grants and contracts, philanthropic contributions, ad hoc funding arrangements, and longer-term contractual arrangements with third parties. The article discusses a study which examined the impact of nurses' health on the work productivity of a hospital and the quality of care. It mentions the study used focus groups to obtain information from registered nurses (RNs) using an open-ended, semi-structured interview guide, and Krueger and Casey's content analysis strategies were used to analyze the data. The four themes from the interviews are discussed, which highlight the need for healthcare reform and a change in work environment. The article concludes that staff nurses and managers lack knowledge on legal rights and worker health policies, and education is required to support nurses with health problems.

Aim: The purpose of this article is to address ways in which a nursing faculty can build nursing leadership competencies into a nursing programme. This article describes the use of simulation as a compelling learning strategy. Background: Nurses need to be prepared to meet the demands of mass casualty events. With the growing need for major incident training, leadership competency development is a critical gap in the literature. Evaluation: A collaborative simulation was used to help students apply classroom knowledge. In this simulation, students participated in major incident triage and the application of leadership competencies to appropriately manage victims’ care. Conclusion: Collaboration among faculty members when designing simulation scenarios is a powerful approach to nursing education. Writing problems are common in children with clinical disorders. However, there are significant intra-individual differences between the ability to spell words, construct sentences, and compose text. Therefore, achievement tests measuring different writing skills may not be consistent in identifying children who have these various writing disabilities. Our study compared scores on the Woodcock-Johnson Written Language sub tests (which measure the ability to produce single words and single sentences) with scores on the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test Written Expression subtest (which assesses compositional writing skills) in 54 children referred by their teachers to a school psychologist for writing problems. The Woodcock-Johnson only identified 35% of children as having significant writing problems, whereas the Wechsler test identified 78%. Our study suggests that the latter is more likely than the Woodcock-Johnson to identify students who have problems in compositional writing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This statement was released in June 2020 by the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine to provide guidance for the 2020-2021 residency application cycle in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many of the recommendations are specific to this cycle, others, such as the Department Summary Letter of Evaluation, are meant to be an enduring change to the internal medicine residency application process. AAIM realizes that some schools may not yet have the tools or resources to implement the template fully this cycle and look toward collaboration within the internal medicine education community to facilitate adoption in the cycles to come. Background: Increasingly, residents are being trained in Patient-centered Medical Home (PCMH) settings. A set of PCMH entrustable professional activities (EPAs) for residents has been defined but not evaluated in practice. Objective: To understand whether residents trained at PCMH sites reported higher likelihood of engaging in PCMH tasks than those training in non-PCMH sites. Design: Survey and nominal group data from post-graduate trainees at three residency programs. Results: A total of 179 residents responded (80% response). Over half (52%) cared for patients at PCMH sites. Residents at PCMH sites were more likely to report engaging in tasks in the NCQA domains of enhancing access and continuity (p < 0.01 for 4/11 tasks), planning and managing care (p < 0.01 for 3/4 tasks), providing self-care and community support (p < 0.01 for 3/5 tasks), and identifying and managing patient populations (p < 0.01 for 1/6 tasks), but were not more likely to report tracking and coordinating care or measuring and improving performance. Residents at PCMH sites were more likely to report working with medical assistants (p < 0.01), but not other healthcare professionals. Qualitative data showed staff teamwork and continuity of care as facilitators of patient-centered care, and technological problems and office inefficiencies as barriers to care. Conclusions: Residents trained at PCMH sites were more likely to engage in tasks in several NCQA domains, but not care coordination and quality assessment. Similar facilitators and barriers to trainee provision of patient-centered care were cited regardless of PCMH status. Curricula on PCMH principles and workflows that foster continuity and communication may help to inform residents on PCMH tenets and incorporate residents into team-based care.
