Deep inelastic and transfer reactions with an 820-MeV, 136Xe beam and various ytterbium and lutetium targets have been employed to study high-spin structures in the neutron-rich thulium isotopes beyond 171Tm. Results in the doubly odd nucleus, 174Tm, include the identification of numerous new two- and four-quasiparticle intrinsic states including several isomers below 1 MeV, and the observation of the Kp=4- ground state rotational band populated via direct decay from a t=153(10)-µs, Kp=14- isomer at 2092 keV. The 398-keV, M1 transition linking the isomer and ground state band is abnormally fast for a highly forbidden, ?K=10 decay. This relative enhancement is explained in terms of mixing of the 13- level with the nearby 13- member of a Kp=8- rotational band, with an interaction strength of V 1.4 keV. Deep-inelastic reactions and γ-ray spectroscopy have been used to study excited states in 195Au. A three-quasiparticle isomer with a mean-life of 18.6(3) µs has been assigned at 2461 + Δ keV, with decays into newly identified structures. Possible configurations for the isomer are discussed including a Jπ = 31/2- intrinsic state produced by coupling the 11/2- [505] proton hole to the 10+ state obtained from the 9/2+ [624], 11/2+ [615] two-neutron holes, expected from configuration-constrained potential-energy-surface calculations. Residual interactions are evaluated within a semi-empirical shell model basis. New lifetime information is also obtained for the 21/2+ and 25/2+ states at 1813 and 1980 keV. High-spin states in the odd-proton thulium isotopes 173Tm and 175Tm have been studied using deep-inelastic reactions and γ-ray spectroscopy. In l73Tm, the low-lying structure has been confirmed and numerous new states have been identified, including a three-quasiparticle Kπ = 19/2- isomer with a lifetime of τ = 360(100) ns at 1906 keV and a five-quasiparticle Kπ = 35/2- isomer with a lifetime of τ = 175(40) ns at 4048 keV. The Kπ = 35/2- state is interpreted as a t-band configuration that shows anomalously fast decays. In 175Tm, the low-lying structure has been reevaluated, a candidate state for the 9/2- [514] orbital has been identified at 1175 keV, and the 7/2-[523] bandhead has been measured to have a lifetime of τ = 460(50) ns. Newly identified high- AT structures in 175Tm include a Kπ = 15/2- isomer with a lifetime of τ = 64(3) ns at 947 keV and a Kπ = 23/2- isomer with a lifetime of τ = 30(20) µs at 1518 keV. The Kπ = 15/2- isomer shows relatively enhanced decays to the 7/2-[523] band that can be explained by chance mixing with the 15/2- member of the 7/2- band. The level structures of 212Ra and 213Ra have been established via time-correlated γ-ray spectroscopy following the 204Pb(12C,4n)212Ra and 204Pb(13C,4n)213Ra reactions. In 212Ra, levels up to ∼6.2MeV were identified and firm spin-parity assignments were achieved to a Jπ=19+ isomer with a mean life of 31(3) ns. For 213Ra the corresponding values were ∼4.5MeV in excitation energy and Jπ=33/2+. Two isomeric states with Jπ=23/2+, τ=27(3) ns and Jπ=33/2+, τ=50(3) ns were discovered in 213Ra. SABRE (Sodium iodide with Active Background REjection) is a direct detection dark matter experiment based on arrays of radio-pure NaI(Tl) crystals. The experiment aims at achieving an ultra-low background rate and its primary goal is to confirm or refute the results from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. The SABRE Proof-of-Principle phase was carried out in 2020–2021 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), in Italy. The next phase consists of two full-scale experiments: SABRE South at the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory, in Australia, and SABRE North at LNGS. This paper focuses on SABRE South and presents a detailed simulation of the detector, which is used to characterise the background for dark matter searches including DAMA/LIBRA-like modulation. We estimate an overall background of 0.72 cpd/kg/ keV ee in the energy range 1–6 keV ee primarily due to radioactive contamination in the crystals. Given this level of background and considering that the SABRE South has a target mass of 50 kg, we expect to exclude (confirm) DAMA/LIBRA modulation at 4 (5) σ within 2.5 years of data taking. The structure of 210Fr has been established up to an excitation energy of ∼5.5 MeV and spins of ∼25ℏ, via time-correlated γ-ray spectroscopy and using the Au197(O18,5n)Fr210 reaction with pulsed beams at an energy of 97 MeV. A significantly different level scheme has been obtained compared to previous publications. Several isomers are reported here, including a Jπ=(23)+,τ=686(9)-ns state at 4417 keV and a 10−, 29.8(11)-ns state at 1113 keV. The former isomer has been associated with the π (h9/2³i13/2²)ν(p1/2-2f5/2-1) configuration and decays via proposed E3 transitions with strengths of 8.4(3) and 21.2(8) W.u. There are only very few known cases of a high-spin isomer decaying via two parallel E3 transitions. Indeed, this is not seen in other Fr nuclei, and consequently these strengths differ from related decays in the neighboring isotopes. However, by examining the systematics of E3 transitions in trans-lead nuclei, we suggest that the weaker of the two transitions decays to a mixed 20- state. The nuclei 131I and 133I have been populated in multi-nucleon transfer reactions between 136Xe ions and various targets, and their structure investigated by time-correlated γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy and the measurement of γ-ray angular correlations. A 19/2- isomer at 1918 keV, with a half-life of 24(1) µs, has been identified in 131I, as well as nanosecond isomers with Jπ = 23/2+ in both isotopes. A T1/2 = 25(3) ns isomer at 4308 keV in 131I is suggested to have Jπ = (31/2-, 33/2-) and is primarily attributed to the coupling of an odd proton in the d5/2 or g7/2 orbit with the $(\pi^2)_{0^+} (\nu h_{11/2}^{-3} d_{3/2}^{-1})_{15^-}$ configuration in 130Te, responsible for the 15- isomer in that nucleus. Excited states in 208Fr have been identified using the 197Au(16O, 5n)208Fr reaction and a variety of time-correlated $ \gamma$ -ray and conversion electron spectroscopic techniques. Transitions above and below a $ \tau$ = 623(16) ns 10- isomer are placed in the level scheme. This isomer is analogous to that observed in the odd-odd isotone 206At for which additional spectroscopic information is also obtained, including a precise lifetime of $ \tau$ = 1173(30) ns. Background: Thanks to various technical innovations and advances in instrumentation, laparoscopic surgical intervention is now possible for certain congenital anomalies in children. To test the applicability of laparoscopic surgery in neonates, we reviewed our personal experience of neonatal laparoscopic surgery, focusing on cardiopulmonary function, surgical procedures, problems with devices, and degree of associated surgical stress.Methods: We performed 65 laparoscopic procedures in neonates. Their ages ranged from 2 to 30 days old, and their body weights ranged from 1,980 to 4,780 g. All 65 laparoscopic procedures were carried out without mortality or serious morbidity.Results: As complications, we encountered four cases of hypothermia due to rapid insufflation of carbon dioxide (CO(2)). We also found that relative hypercapnea (increase in end-tidal CO(2) as high as 61 mmHg) developed unless hyperventilation and a relatively high peak insufflation pressure were maintained during pneumoperitoneum. No cardiac depression developed at this insufflation pressure. Fluid and electrolyte balance during our cases of newborn laparoscopic surgery, as well as the doses and volumes of fluid and electrolytes administered, were identical to those required for open surgery. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) was measured serially to estimate the degree of associated surgical stress and was found to be significantly lower in neonates who had received laparoscopic procedures than in those who had received open procedures.Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgery can be carried out safely even in neonates. Mass-separated 187Ta114 in a high-spin isomeric state has been produced for the first time by multinucleon transfer reactions, employing an argon gas-stopping cell and laser ionization. Internal γ rays revealed a T1/2 = 7.3 ± 0.9     s isomer at 1778 ± 1 keV, which decays through a rotational band with perturbations associated with the approach to a prolate-oblate shape transition. Model calculations show less influence from triaxiality compared to heavier elements in the same mass region. The isomer-decay reduced E2 hindrance factor fν = 27 ± 1 supports the interpretation that axial symmetry is approximately conserved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: We investigated the relationship between the affected lobe and symptom onset in prenatally diagnosed congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM).Methods: 53 CPAM patients diagnosed prenatally were reviewed retrospectively by creating 2 groups according to symptom onset. Group Sneo: (symptomatic during the neonatal period; n = 13) and group S > neo: (symptomatic after the neonatal period; n = 40) were compared for type of CPAM, affected lobes, types of symptoms/infections, treatment, duration of follow-up, and histopathology. Requirement for surgery (Sx) was then used to create three subgroups: Sneo + Sx, S > neo + Sx, and Sx-.Results: Some cases had multiple affected lobes. In Sneo, symptoms developed in 55.6%, 50.0%, 0%, 0%, and 36.8% of right upper lobes (RUL), right middle lobes (RML), right lower lobes (RLL), left upper lobes (LUL), and left lower lobes (LLL) diagnosed with CPAM, prenatally. In S > neo, symptoms developed in 0%, 0%, 6.3%, 55.6%, and 33.3% of RUL, RML, RLL, LUL, and LLL diagnosed with CPAM, prenatally.Conclusion: In prenatally diagnosed CPAM, RUL and RML lesions are more likely to become symptomatic in neonates, and LUL lesions in infants. We present information on the excited states in the prolate-deformed, neutron-rich nuclei 165;167Tb100;102. The nuclei of interest were synthesised following in-flight fission of a 345 MeV per nucleon 238U primary beam on a 2 mm 9Be target at the Radioactive Ion-Beam Factory (RIBF), RIKEN, Japan. The exotic nuclei were separated and identified event-by-event using the BigRIPS separator, with discrete energy gamma-ray decays from isomeric states with half-lives in the Vs regime measured using the EURICA gamma-ray spectrometer. Metastable-state decays are identified in 165Tb and 167Tb and interpreted as arising from hindered E1 decay from the 7-/2[523] single quasi-proton Nilsson configuration to rotational states built on the 3-/2[411] single quasi-proton ground state. These data correspond to the first spectroscopic information in the heaviest, odd-A terbium isotopes reported to date and provide information on proton Nilsson configurations which reside close to the Fermi surface as the 170Dy doubly-midshell nucleus is approached. Using the 168Er (10B, 5n) reaction at a beam energy of 68 MeV, new data have been obtained for the population and decay of a T1/2 = 148 ns, Kπ = 21/2- three-quasiparticle isomer at 1717 keV in 173 Ta. Revised decay energies and intensities have been determined, together with newly observed members of a rotational band associated with the isomer. By comparison with other isomers in the A ≈ 180 deformed region, the 173 Ta isomer properties help to specify the key degrees of freedom that determine K -forbidden transition rates. In particular, when all three quasiparticles are of the same nucleon type, there is a strong dependence of the E2 reduced hindrance factor on the isomer excitation energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The yrast structure of 207Pb above the 13/2+ isomeric state has been investigated in deep-inelastic collisions of 208Pb and 208Pb at ATLAS, Argonne National Laboratory. New and previously observed transitions were measured using the Gammasphere detector array. The level scheme of 207Pb is presented up to ~ 6 MeV, built using coincidence and γ-ray intensity analyses. An excited metastable nuclear state of 192Os in a hydrogen-like charge state has been studied for the first time. It was populated in projectile fragmentation of a 197Au beam on a 9Be target with the UNILAC-SIS accelerators at GSI. Fragmentation products in the region of interest were passed through the fragment separator and injected into the experimental storage ring (ESR). Cooling of the injected beam particles enabled Schottky mass spectrometry to be performed. Analysis shows the lifetime of the state to be considerably longer than that of the neutral ion [τneut = 8.5(14) s]; this change is attributed to hindrance of internal conversion in hydrogen-like 1920s. Calculations have been performed to estimate the lifetime, and the result has been compared with that measured experimentally. There is good agreement between the expected [τH-like = 13.0(24) s] and measured lifetimes (τrest = 15.1-1.3+1.5 s) from the internal decay of 192mOs. This provides a test for the reliability of the values obtained from internal conversion coefficient calculations in highly ionized systems and is the first measurement of its kind to be performed using the ESR setup. Deep-inelastic collisions of a 208Pb beam on a 208Pb target were performed using the ATLAS accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory. Prompt and delayed -rays from the reaction products were detected using the GAMMASPHERE detector array. The cross-coincidence method was used to identify transitions in 207Tl, by gating on -rays from its bettercharacterised reaction partner 209Bi. A number of new transitions were found in 207Tl. Over a period of several years we have performed three separate experiments at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's 88-Inch Cyclotron in which 235U (thick target) was Coulomb-excited. The program involved standalone experiments with Gammmasphere and with the 8pi Spectrometer using 136Xe beams at 720 MeV, and a CHICO-Gammasphere experiment with a 40Ca beam at 184 MeV. In addition to extending the known negative-parity bands to high spin, we have assigned levels in some seven positive-parity bands which are in some cases (e.g., [631]l/2, [624]7/2, and [622]5/2) strongly populated by E3 excitation. The CHICO data have been analyzed to extract E2 and E3 matrix elements from the observed yields. Additionally, many M1 matrix elements could be extracted from the γ-ray branching ratios. A number of new features have emerged, including the unexpected attenuation of magnetic transitions between states of the same Nilsson multiplet, the breakdown of Coriolis staggering at high spin, and the effect of E3 collectivity on Coriolis interactions. The half-life of a Kπ = 12+ isomer in 164Er has been measured to be 68(2) ns, and new decay pathways have been identified. These include highly K-forbidden y-ray transitions directly to the ground-state rotational band, with reduced hindrance values that can be compared with those found for heavier nuclides. High-spin states in the 16468Er96 region were studied using 9Be + l60Gd reactions. Pulsed beam conditions were exploited for enhanced sensitivity to delayed &ggr;-ray transitions. New isomers were identified in 16lDy, l63Ho, 162Er, and l65Er. The l62Er isomer is interpreted to decay by E1 transitions to the ground-state band with a reduced hindrance of fv = 33. A plot of fv values for all &Dgr;K = 7, E1 transitions from two-quasiparticle isomers to the ground-state bands of even-even nuclei reveals only a small influence from the dynamic to kinematic moment-of-inertia ratio, which provides a measure of Coriolis K mixing within the ground-state band. This is interpreted to imply that the relatively low hindrances are due to K mixing in the isomer, caused by a combination of Coriolis and octupole band mixing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 160Gd(9Be,α3n)162Dy reaction has been used to study high-spin states in 162Dy. Pulsed beam conditions were utilized for enhanced isomer sensitivity. An isomer at 2188.1(3) keV with a half-life of 8.3(3) μs has been discovered and assigned Kπ= 8+ with a two-quasineutron configuration. Among 11 γ-ray decay branches, an E2, ΔK=8 transition to the ground-state band was observed with a reduced hindrance of ƒv=35, agreeing well with systematics correlating ƒv with the product of the valence neutron and proton numbers (NpNn) over an extended N,Z range. Small deviations from NpNn dependence are analyzed for a range of two-quasiparticle isomer decays and interpreted as arising from a weak dependence on the isomer excitation energy relative to the yrast line. Three low-lying 8+ states have been identified in 192Pb . A newly observed cascade of $ \gamma$ -rays built directly on the 8+ 1 state is compared to the previously identified, weakly rotational band above the 11- $ \pi$ i13/2 , h9/2 isomer in the same nucleus, and to analogous structures in 194Pb . The similarity of all four structures lends support to the suggestion that the 8+ 1 configurations are of a similar oblate deformation to the 11- isomers. The excitation energies of all three 8+ states in 192Pb and 190Pb are compared to systematics. The possibility that one of the 8+ states in 192Pb is associated with a prolate shape is discounted. A superdeformed band has been observed in theN= 108 isotope190Pb. This is the most neutron-deficient Pb isotope in which superdeformed states have been observed. Several theoretical approaches have predicted thatN= 108 will mark the limit of observable superdeformation in the Pb isotopes. The band, which consists of five (possibly six) transitions, is observed to feed at least one isomeric level in its decay to the ground state. New data have been obtained for 185Os following the 176Yb(13C,4n)185Os reaction, extending the pseudo-Nilsson &fracl;12-, -&frac;32- [&4tilde;&1tilde;&1tilde;] doublet structure and the &frac;72- [&4tilde;&0tilde;&4tilde; band to significantly higher spins. Gamma-ray branching ratio data have been analysed to obtain extensive B(M1) and B(E2) ratios for intraband and inter band transitions. The data are compared with particle-rotor calculations based on the pseudo-Nilsson potential and the Woods-Saxon potential. The results indicate that the pseudo-Nilsson approximation provides a good description of the &fracl;12-, -&frac;32-[&4tilde;&1tilde;&1tilde;] bands up to the first band crossing; the difference in magnitude between the model predictions and data for the &frac;72-[&4tilde;&0tilde;&4tilde;] band may be attributed to a lower deformation for the higher-K structure. The level scheme of 18176Os has been investigated with the 150Nd(36S,5n) reaction. The low-K rotational bands built upon the 9/2+[624], 7/2−[514] and 1/2−[521] neutron configurations have been extended and other new bands established. The configurations of these low-K bands are discussed within the framework of the cranked-shell model. The lifetimes for some of the states in the 9/2+[624] and 1/2−[521] collective rotational bands were also measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation method. The large deformations deduced are found to be consistent with those predicted from theoretical Total Routhian Surface calculations. These results support the idea that for these low-K states the nuclear shape is axially symmetric and allows the K quantum number to be defined and the associated K-selection rule to be upheld. This behaviour apparently contrasts with that of the higher-K states in 181Os. In the higher-spin regime, two new high-K intrinsic states, with Kπ=37/2+ and Kπ=41/2+, were established, along with the fragmented decay of a Kπ=33/2− intrinsic state. The configurations and excitation energies of these experimentally determined intrinsic states are found to be in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations based on a fixed shape Nilsson model plus BCS pairing. The structures on top of these intrinsic states do, however, show very different behaviour. A relatively regular high-K rotational band was observed on top of the Kπ=41/2+ state but not for the other newly-established intrinsic states. Theoretical configuration-constrained potential energy surface calculations suggest that the irregular transition sequence above the Kπ=37/2+ intrinsic bandhead state, the limited excitations observed above the other intrinsic states and the observation of fragmented and non-hindered decays, are due to these configurations being subject to an appreciable γ softness. These calculations reveal that the Kπ=41/2+ configuration is less susceptible to distortions in the γ plane than any of the other high-K states. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The 8He+208Pb reaction was studied in the first experiment with the EXOGAM germanium detector array using beam delivered by the SPIRAL facility. γ-rays from direct and fusion–evaporation reactions were observed with high resolution. γ–γ coincidence data were obtained at a beam intensity level of 105 8He particles per second. Specially designed absorbers and beam detectors could further reduce the background radiation by orders of magnitude. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Transient-field g-factor measurements in inverse kinematics were performed for the first-excited states of the stable, even isotopes of Ge and Se. The g factors of 74Ge and 74Se were measured simultaneously using a cocktail beam, which eliminates most possible sources of systematic error in a relative g-factor measurement. The results are g(74Se)/g(74Ge)=1.34(7), g(70Ge)/g(74Ge)=1.16(15), g(72Ge)/g(74Ge)=0.92(13), g(76Ge)/g(74Ge)=0.88(5), g(76Se)/g(74Se)=0.96(7), g(78Se)/g(74Se)=0.82(5), g(80Se)/g(74Se)=0.99(7), and g(82Se)/g(74Se)=1.19(6). The measured g-factor ratios are in agreement with ratios from previous measurements, despite considerable variation in previous reported absolute values. The absolute values of the g factors remain uncertain, however, the Rutgers parametrization was used to set the transient-field strength and then compare the experimental g factors with shell-model calculations based on the JUN45 and jj44b interactions. Modest agreement was found between experiment and theory for both interactions. The level structure of the odd-odd iodine nucleus 122I has been studied by the 120Sn(7Li, 5n) 122I reaction at Elab = 58 MeV. Two chopped beams from the 14UD (Unit Doubled) tandem heavy-ion accelerator at the Australian National University were used; one was a nanosecond (ns) pulsed-beam with separation of 1.7 microseconds (μs) and the second one was a 60-μs beam separated by 880 μs. Through in-beam and out-of-beam γ-ray spectroscopy, the complex proton-neutron multiplet states, including isomers with half-lives of a few tens of ns to a few tens of μs, have been identified. Collective states based on the proton h11/2 orbital exhibit two kinds of structure depending upon the coupled neutron orbital: a quadrupole vibration when involving the h11/2 orbital and a γ-soft deformed rotation when involving the g7/2 orbital. Excited states in 58,60,62Ni were populated via inelastic proton scattering at the Australian National University as well as via inelastic neutron scattering at the University of Kentucky Accelerator Laboratory. The Super-e electron spectrometer and the CAESAR Compton-suppressed HPGe array were used in complementary experiments to measure conversion coefficients and δ(E2/M1) mixing ratios, respectively, for a number of 2+→2+ transitions. The data obtained were combined with lifetimes and branching ratios to determine E0,M1, and E2 transition strengths between 2+ states. The E0 transition strengths between 0+ states were measured using internal conversion electron spectroscopy and compare well to previous results from internal pair formation spectroscopy. A number of fission products possess isomeric states which have a nuclear spin significantly different from that of the ground state. The yield ratio of these states following fission is influenced by the angular momentum present in the fissioning system. The 134m,134Sb yield ratio had not been previously measured in the spontaneous fission of 252Cf; however, it had previously been observed to favor the (7-) isomer over the (0-) ground state in 235U(nth,f) and 232Th(25 MeV p,f). Using a mass-separated beam of low-energy 134,134mSb ions produced by 252Cf spontaneous fission at the CARIBU facility, β particles and γ rays were detected using the SATURN/X-Array decay station to determine the fission-yield ratio and β-decay half-lives. The 134mSb to 134Sb fission yield was determined to be 2.03±0.05 and the half-lives of 134mSb and 134Sb were found to be 9.87±0.08 s and 0.674±0.004 s, respectively.
