Spectroscopic chemical analysis methods and apparatus are disclosed which employ deep ultraviolet (e.g. in the 200 nm to 300 nm spectral range) electron beam pumped wide bandgap semiconductor lasers, incoherent wide bandgap semiconductor light emitting devices, and hollow cathode metal ion lasers to perform non-contact, non-invasive detection of unknown chemical analytes. These deep ultraviolet sources enable dramatic size, weight and power consumption reductions of chemical analysis instruments. In some embodiments, Raman spectroscopic detection methods and apparatus use ultra-narrow-band angle tuning filters, acousto-optic tuning filters, and temperature tuned filters to enable ultra-miniature analyzers for chemical identification. In some embodiments Raman analysis is conducted along with photoluminescence spectroscopy (i.e. fluorescence and/or phosphorescence spectroscopy) to provide high levels of sensitivity and specificity in the same instrument.

Naphthalene, benzene, toluene, xylene, and other volatile organic compounds VOCs have been identified as serious health hazards. Embodiments of the invention are directed to methods and apparatus for near-real-time in-situ detection and accumulated dose measurement of exposure to naphthalene vapor and other hazardous gaseous VOCs. The methods and apparatus employ excitation of fluorophors native or endogenous to compounds of interest using light sources emitting in the ultraviolet below 300 nm and measurement of native fluorescence emissions in distinct wavebands above the excitation wavelength. The apparatus of some embodiments are cell-phone-sized sensor/dosimeter "badges" to be worn by personnel potentially exposed to hazardous VOCs. The badge sensor of some embodiments provides both real time detection and data logging of exposure to naphthalene or other VOCs of interest from which both instantaneous and accumulated dose can be determined.

The particular focus of some embodiments are the detection and identification of naphthalene while other embodiments are directed to detection and identification of other VOCs like aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, and xylene.

The Mars Polar Caps are highly interesting features of Mars and have received much recent attention with new and exciting data on morphology, basal units, and layered outcroppings. We have examined the climatological, glaciological, and geological issues associated with a subsurface exploration of the Mars North Polar Cap and have determined that a finescale optical examination of ice in a borehole, to examine the stratigraphy, geochemistry and geochronology of the ice, is feasible. This information will enable reconstruction of the development of the cap as well as prediction of the properties of its ice. We present visible imagery taken of dust inclusions in archived Greenland ice cores as well as in-situ images of accreted lithologic inclusions in West Antarctica, and we argue for use of this kind of data in Mars climate reconstruction as has been successful with Greenland and Antarctic ice core analysis. .

The Mars Microbeam Raman Spectrometer, under development at Washington University and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, can identify oxide, sulfide, and oxyanion minerals, bound water and OH, and organic and graphitic carbon in Mars rocks and soils in situ. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Raman spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for in situ mineralogy, petrology, and detection of water and carbon. The Athena Raman spectrometer is a microbeam instrument intended for close-up analyses of targets (rock or soils) selected by the Athena Pancam and Mini-TES. It will take 100 Raman spectra along a linear traverse of approximately one centimeter (point-counting procedure) in one to four hours during the Mars' night. From these spectra, the following information about the target will extracted: (1) the identities of major, minor, and trace mineral phases, organic species (e.g., PAH or kerogen-like polymers), reduced inorganic carbon, and water-bearing phases; (2) chemical features (e.g. Mg/Fe ratio) of major minerals; and (3) rock textural features (e.g., mineral clusters, amygdular filling and veins). Part of the Athena payload, the miniaturized Raman spectrometer has been under development in a highly interactive collaboration of a science team at Washington University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and an engineering team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The development has completed the brassboard stage and has produced the design for the engineering model.

The icy Galilean satellites of Jupiter are subject to magnetospheric plasma ion bombardment, which induces chemical changes within the ice. The possible detection of CO2 on the surface of Ganymede by the Galileo spacecraft makes for a more complicated chemistry and increases the number of chemical compounds that may then be present. We outline chemical schemes for the irradiation of pure and mixed ices H2O/CO2 and suggest species which observers may detect on Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, such as C3O2, H2CO3, H2O2, CO3, HO2, CO, H2CO, CH2CO, as well as K2O, KOH, and SO3, from plasma implantation. Column abundances of compounds in the ice are calculated using a specified energy input and G values (yield per 100 eV).

The icy Galilean Satellites of Jupiter are subject to magnetospheric plasma ion bombardment which induces chemical changes within the ice. The possible detection of CO2 on the surface of Ganymede by the Galileo spacecraft makes for a more complicatred chemistry and increases the number of chemical compounds that may then be present.

Observations taken with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) detected a 0.28 micron absorption feature on Callisto's leading and Jupiter-facing hemispheres. This feature is similar to Europa's 0.28 micron feature, however it shows no correlation with magnetospheric ion bombardment. The strongest 0.28 micron signature is seen in the region containing the Valhalla impact. This absorption feature also shows some spatial correlation to possible neutral wind interactions, suggestive of S implantation (rather than S(sub x)) into Callisto's water ice surface, Indications of possible temporal variations (on the 10% level) are seen at other wavelengths between the 1984-1986 and the 1996 observations.

The scientific intent of this experiment is to measure the chemical activity of martian soil and atmosphere by examining the activity level of one or more compositionally unknown oxidants inferred from the Viking soil analysis experiments.

Io's brightness was monitored following emergence from eclipse by Jupiter on 14 occasions during the Jupiter apparitions from 1981 to 1989 and no instance is found of what has been called posteclipse brightening. If all the observations are averaged, a 2 percent effect cannot be ruled out; however, this effect is also the size of the rms errors of the summed data set. If condensation followed by sublimation of SO2 frost is hypothesized to be the mechanism which causes posteclipse brightening, then solar insolation alone may not be sufficient to remove an optically thick layer of SO2 frost in the time required to conform with the positive reports of posteclipse brightening in the literature. An additional source of energy is required, such as warming caused by the impact of magnetospheric particles as they dissipate the energy of their motion into Io's surface.

In January, 1976, Voyager 2's photopolarimeter and UV spectrometer observed Delta Sagitarii and Beta Persei during their occultation by the Uranian delta ring. An inner diffuse companion of this ring was detected and found to have an average width of 12 km. By comparing the widths and equivalent depths of the two sets of data, it is established that the particles making the greatest contribution to the integrated opacities of the companion are of greater-than-several-cm sizes. The particles appear to be located away from the photopolarimetry edges, where there may be particles smaller than those observed elsewhere.

The Voyager Photopolarimeter Experiment detected the Neptunian rings 1989N1R and possibly 1989N2R. These rings were also photographed by the Voyager imaging cameras in August 1989. The firm detection of 1989N1R has an equivalent depth (the product of the radial width and mean normal optical depth) of 0.77 + or - 0.13 km, while a less certain detection of 1989N2R has an equivalent depth of 0.7 km + or - 0.2 km. Several statistical techniques were used to search for additional material in the Neptune ring system, and none was identified at a high confidence level.

The surfaces of the principal Uranian satellites are characterized on the basis of UV and IR geometric albedos, phase curves, and phase coefficients obtained in full-disk photopolarimetric observations during the Voyager 2 encounter with Uranus in January 1986. The data are presented in tables and graphs and found to be consistent with a heavily cratered terrain and loosely packed regolith. The Bond albedos are calculated as 0.22 + or - 0.1 for Ariel, 0.07 + or - 0.05 for Umbriel, 0.16 + or - 0.12 for Titania, and 0.19 + or - 0.22 for Oberon. The characteristics of the Uranian satellites indicate compositions (and probably formation conditions and surface-modification mechanisms) distinct from those of the Saturnian and Jovian satellites.

An 8-year IUE satellite spectrophotometric observation campaign's results for the Galilean satellites of Jupiter indicate low albedos for all four, consistent with the distribution of sulfurous materials escaping from the surface of Io to the surfaces of the three other bodies by means of magnetospheric processes. A previously reported UV spectral asymmetry between Europa's leading and trailing hemispheres is confirmed. The greater trailing than leading side opposition surge observed in Europa implies that the trailing side is the less compact of the two. Ganymede exhibits UV spectral asymmetry also, but only at wavelengths greater than 0.28 microns.

An analysis of 33 IUE UV spectra of Europa, obtained from 1978 to 1982 for orbital phase angles of 21 to 343 deg, confirms that the Lane et al. (1981) absorption feature, centered at 280 nm, is most clearly revealed when 223-333 deg orbital phase angle spectra are ratioed to those nearest 90 deg. The feature's strength is noted to have persisted over the 5-year period studied, suggesting that no large endogenically or exogenically generated changes in surface sulfur dioxide concentration have occurred. These results further substantiate the Lane et al. hypothesis that the feature is due to the implantation of Io plasma torus-derived sulfur ions on the Europa trailing side's water-ice surface.

Spectrophotometric observations of the atmosphereless planetary satellites obtained with the IUE since its launch in 1978 are reviewed. The value of IUE data in complementing the images obtained by planetary probes is indicated; the techniques used to interpret IUE images of the satellites and extract textural information are discussed; and data on the Gallilean satellites of Jupiter and the satellites of Saturn are presented in extensive tables and graphs and characterized in detail. Consideration is given to the broadband geometric albedos, the orbital phase curves, hemispherical spectral asymmetries, spectral orbital phase variations, and the prospects for further observations with the Space Telescope and other earth-orbiting platforms.
