Forest management practices may heavily affect epiphytic cryptogams. This study was conceived in March 2016, as soon as we were informed about an authorized logging for timber within a Mediterranean mixed oak forest in Tuscany (central Italy), which threatened a large population of the forest macrolichen Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm., composed of hundreds of fertile thalli. Lobaria pulmonaria is often used as an ecological indicator of high quality habitats hosting rare lichens, and in general, cryptogams worthy of conservation. The species has suffered a general decline throughout Europe as a consequence of air pollution and intensive forest management, and currently it is red-listed in several countries, where it is considered also as a “flag species”. We estimated that 40% of the lichen biomass (8.5-12.3 kg ha-1) has been lost due to logging operations (in the core area, up to 1.8 kg every 100 m2), in particular large and fertile thalli. One year after the conclusion of logging operations, the analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence emission (indicator of the photosynthetic performance of the lichen photobionts), revealed a significant reduction of the vitality of the thalli on retained-isolated trees. The article provides issues for conservation in Mediterranean oak forests and outlines the outmost importance of ensuring the safeguard of forest ecosystems hosting fertile populations of this model species, especially in the case of unprotected forests.

This study was aimed at evaluating the degree of nasal inflammation, assessed by nasal cytology, in children with allergic rhinitis (AR) from ragweed pollen according to being monosensitized or polysensitized.Methods: The study included 47 children. Of them, 24 suffered from AR caused by sensitization to grass pollen and ragweed pollen (group A) and 23 were sensitized only to ragweed pollen (group B). In all patients, the severity of AR was assessed according to the Allergic Rhinitis and Its Impact on Asthma guidelines, and comorbidities were also evaluated.Results: In group A, 16.7% of children had a mild intermittent AR, 4.2% a moderate-to-severe intermittent, 33.3% a mild persistent, and 45.8% a moderate-to-severe persistent; in group B, 26.1% of children had a mild intermittent AR, 0% a moderate-to-severe intermittent, 52.2% a mild persistent, and 21.7% a moderate-to-severe persistent. No significant difference was detected in the number of the considered comorbidities between the two groups. The cell counts of neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes/plasma cells, and mast cells were high but not significantly different in the two groups.Conclusion: These findings show that the degree of nasal inflammation found in children with ragweed-induced AR is not influenced by additional allergy to grass pollen and confirm the previously reported absence of priming effect in ragweed allergy.Keywords: allergic rhinitis, pollen sensitization, priming effect, nasal cytology, eosinophils, neutrophils

We examined the concordance between vascular plants and macrofungi (grouped into trophic groups) in Mediterranean forest habitats (central Italy). Our goal was to test how consistently plant and fungi groups classify plots in a broadleaf deciduous forest dominated by Quercus cerris. Our hypothesis was that groups of plants can be used as surrogates for the classification of macrofungal communities. The test of concordance comprised two steps: 1) the plant species data sets were subjected to cluster analysis, to obtain three classifications based on presence of all plants, presence and frequency of only woody species; 2) Multiple Response Permutation Procedures (MRPP) was used to test the performance of each plant classification applied to the fungi data sets. The sample scores along the first PCA axis was used to investigate the relationships between compositional patterns. In the concordance analysis, the classification of only woody plants provided better results than the classification obtained with herbaceous and woody plants together. Cross-tests gave the best results when the “woody plants” classification was applied to ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) and, to a certain extent, to humicolous saprotrophs (Sh). The ordination analysis indicated that the frequency of woody plants follows a similar spatial distribution to EMF and Sh fungal groups and is therefore expected to discriminate the same environmental gradients. Many EMF exhibit preferences for few (one or two) hosts. Significant associations were found among a greater number of EMF and woody plant species. Woody plants such as Sorbus domestica and Prunus spinosa appear to be associated with many EMF. The combination of a high frequency of Fraxinus oxycarpa and Quercus petraea seems to promote distinct assemblages of EMF and Sh fungi. Then, characteristic assemblages of fungi were found in association with certain tree and shrub combinations.

Recent studies suggested that the allergen load presents seasonal modifications, giving rise to seasonal variation in nasal inflammation and symptoms. The aim of this study was to evaluate by nasal cytology whether nasal inflammation in mite-allergic patients changes with the seasons of the year. Methods: The study included 16 patients (seven males and nine females, mean age 38.1 years) with persistent AR caused by monosensitization to HDMs. Nasal cytology was performed in all patients once monthly for 1 year. Results: Nasal cytology showed that the cells most commonly detected in the nasal mucosa were neutrophils. During the period from October to April, a peak in the number of neutrophils and also the presence of significant numbers of eosinophils, mast cells, and lymphocytes/plasma cells were found, which shows the occurrence of more intense inflammation during these months. Conclusion: Nasal cytology provides useful data in detecting nasal inflammation and its association with the clinical stage of AR. The seasonal variations in nasal cytology are likely to be induced by the fluctuations in the HDM allergen that have been uncovered in recent investigations. Photosystem II (PSII) represents the most vulnerable component of the photosynthetic machinery and its response in plants subjected to abiotic stress has been widely studied over many years. PSII is a thylakoid membrane-located multiprotein pigment complex that catalyses the light-induced electron transfer from water to plastoquinone with the concomitant production of oxygen. PSII is rich in intrinsic (PsbA and PsbD, namely D1 and D2, CP47 or PsbB and CP43 or PsbC) but also extrinsic proteins. The first ones are more largely conserved from cyanobacteria to higher plants while the extrinsic proteins are different among species. It has been found that extrinsic proteins involved in oxygen evolution change dramatically the PSII efficiency and PSII repair systems. High light stress decreases the photosynthetic rate in plants due to photooxidative damage to photosynthetic apparatus, photoinhibition of PSII, and/or damage to PSI. The dissipation of excess energy by nonphotochemical quenching and degradation of the D1 protein of PSII and its repair cycle help against photooxidative damage. Light stress also activates stress-responsive nuclear genes through the accumulation of phosphonucleotide-3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphate, methylerythritol cyclodiphosphate, and reactive oxygen species which comprise the chloroplast retrograde signaling pathway. Additionally, hormones, such as abscisic acid, cytokinin, brassinosteroids, and gibberellins, play a role in acclimation to light fluctuations. Several alternate electron flow mechanisms, which offset the excess of electrons, include activation of plastid or plastoquinol terminal oxidase, cytochrome b6/f complex, cyclic electron flow through PSI, Mehler ascorbate peroxidase pathway or water-water cycle, mitochondrial alternative oxidase pathway, and photorespiration. In this review, we provided insights into high light stress-mediated damage to photosynthetic apparatus and strategies to mitigate the damage by decreasing antennae size, enhancing NPQ through the introduction of mutants, expression of algal proteins to improve photosynthetic rates and engineering ATP synthase. In the current study, we used four soybean varieties PK-1029, PK-472, NRC-7, and Hardee to examine the effect of exclusion of solar UV radiation on photosynthetic efficiency and to test possible variety-dependent sensitivity to ambient UV (280-400 nm). Plants that were grown under UV exclusion filters had higher chlorophyll a and b, efficiencies of PSII and more active reaction centers indicated that PSII were substantially affected by solar UV radiation. The significant increase in net photosynthesis was linked to increased stomatal conductance and lower intercellular concentration of CO2 in UV-excluded plants. The exclusion of solar UV increased seed mass per plant in all soybean varieties as compared to the control; this indicates that ambient UV exclusions boost photosynthetic efficiency and improve soybean yield. The overall cumulative stress response index of four varieties implies that Hardee and PK-472 were more sensitive whereas NRC-7 and PK-1029 were resistant to ambient UV radiations.
