Abstract

While the search for new solvents in the chemical industry is of uttermost importance with respect to environmental considerations, this domain remains strongly tied to highly manual and visual inspection tasks by human experts. As the manipulated chemicals may imply a critical danger (CMR substances), mechanical protection barrier are used (fume hoods, gloveboxes). This, in turn, can induce postural discomfort in the long term. Carrying out this task using a remotely controlled robot to reproduce the desired vial motions would alleviate these postural constraints. Nevertheless, the adoption of such a system will depend on its ability to transcribe the users' expertise. Particular attention must be paid to the intuitiveness of the system : transparency of the actions performed, relevance of the perceptual feedback, etc. and, in particular, the fidelity of the movements performed in relation to the user's commands. However, the extent of the rotational movements to be generated and the task interactivity complicates the problem both from the point of view of the motor capacities of industrial robots and for the transparency/responsiveness of the control.To tackle the problen of guaranteeing a secure and reactive expression of the manual characteristics of this task, we propose to separate the control of movement into two parts: control of the path (set of spatial poses) and of the trajectories associated with this path (speed, direction of travel along the path). The user can then partially control the robot's movements, by choosing the type of generic, secure path and modulating the trajectory performed on this path in real time. Although this drastically limits the possibilities for interaction, we assume that this teleoperated system can enable this type of observation task to be carried out as effectively as for direct manipulation. This hypothesis was tested through an experiment in which a reading task, less dangerous but with similar characteristics to the application task, had to be performed using different variants of trajectory modulation. This experiment consisted in reading words printed on four white capsules (dimensions 6 x 12 mm) placed into cylindrical vials ( dimensions 16 mm x 70 mm). Four randomly selected vials were tested by each variant. Firstly, users had to perform the task via direct handling, then under conditions secured by a protection barrier. Users were then invited to perform the task using different trajectory modulation variants (modulation and passive viewing of a pre-recorded video, modulation of the trajectory of a Franka-Emika Panda robot performing the task in real time in front of a monocular Logitech Brio 4K camera). After each trial of a variant, users evaluate different aspects of this variant (manual and visual performance, ease of use, acceptability of the interface) through a questionnaire. During the trials, various objective criteria are also measured (number and nature of interaction with the interface, time and degree of success in the task). This experiment was carried out with 37 subjects (age : 27$\pm$5, 20 females). The data recorded showed that the proportion of successes, as well as the subjects' perceptions of visual performance, comfort of use and acceptability of the interface, were similar and high for all the variants. This suggests that this task is indeed achievable via the proposed interface. However, data also showed that average task completion times when using the trajectory modulation variants were significantly higher than handling by hand variants, which implies that the proposed remote semi-automatic control procedure fails to achieve satisfactory performance regarding execution time. Abstract

A 10-year record of oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of precipitation is presented here: from 2008 to 2017, 1483 daily precipitation samples were collected year-round on a raised platform at Concordia Station, East Antarctica. Weather data were retrieved from the Italian Antarctic Meteo-Climatological Observatory automatic weather station (AWS), while ERA5 was used to estimate total precipitation. The δ–temperature relationships were moderately high for daily data (r2=0.63 and 0.64 for δ18O and δ2H, respectively) and stronger using monthly data (r2=0.82 for both δ18O and δ2H), with a slope of about 0.5 ‰ °C−1 for δ18O/TAWS (3.5 ‰ °C−1 for δ2H/TAWS), which remains consistent also using annual averages. The isotopic composition of precipitation is the input signal of the snow–ice system, and this dataset will be useful to improve the interpretation of paleoclimate records and promote a better understanding of the post-depositional processes affecting the isotopic signal in ice cores. This dataset represents a benchmark for the evaluation of isotope-enabled general circulation models. Here, the ECHAM6-wiso output was compared to experimental data, showing moderately good relationships for δ18O and δ2H but not for d-excess, nonetheless marking a substantial improvement from the previous release of the model.

Abstract

While the processes controlling pore closure are broadly understood, the physical mechanisms driving the associated elemental fractionation remains ambiguous. Previous studies have shown that the pore closure process leads to a depletion in small-sized molecules (e.g. H2, O2, Ar, Ne, He) in ice core bubbles relative to larger-sized molecules like N2. This size-dependent fractionation, identified using ice core δ(O2/N2) records, exhibits a clear anti-correlation with local summer solstice insolation, making δ(O2/N2) a valuable ice core dating tool. Mechanisms controlling this relationship are attributed to the physical properties of deep firn. In this study, we compile δ(O2/N2) records from 15 polar ice cores and show a new additional link between δ(O2/N2) and local surface temperature and/or accumulation rate. Using the Crocus snowpack model, we perform sensitivity tests to identify the response of near-surface snow properties to changes in insolation intensity, accumulation rate, and air temperature. These tests support a mechanism linked to firn grain size, such that the larger the grain size for a given density, the stronger the pore closure fractionation and, hence, the lower the δ(O2/N2) values archived in the ice. Based on both snowpack model outputs and data compilation, our findings suggest that local accumulation rate and temperature should be considered when interpreting δ(O2/N2) as a local insolation proxy.

6. Reliable water vapour isotopic composition measurements at low humidity using frequency-stabilised cavity ring-down spectroscopy

Abstract

In situ measurements of water vapour isotopic composition in polar regions has provided needed constrains of post-deposition processes involved in the archiving of the climatic signal in ice core records. During polar winter, the temperatures, and thus the specific humidity, are so low that current commercial techniques are not able to measure the vapour isotopic composition with enough precision. Here, we make use of new developments in infrared spectroscopy and combine an optical-feedback frequency-stabilised laser source (OFFS technique) using a V-shaped cavity optical feedback (VCOF) cavity and a high-finesse cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) cavity to increase the signal-to-noise ratio while measuring absorption transitions of water isotopes. We present a laboratory infrared spectrometer leveraging all these techniques dedicated to measure water vapour isotopic composition at low humidity levels. At 400 ppmv, the instrument demonstrates a precision of 0.01 ‰ and 0.1 ‰ in δ18O and d-excess, respectively, for an integration time of 2 min. This set-up yields an isotopic composition precision below 1 ‰ at water mixing ratios down to 4 ppmv, which suggests an extrapolated precision in δ18O of 1.5 ‰ at 1 ppmv. Indeed, thanks to the stabilisation of the laser by the VCOF, the instrument exhibits extremely low drift and very high signal-to-noise ratio. The instrument is not hindered by a strong isotope–humidity response which at low humidity can create extensive biases on commercial instruments.

8. Abrupt excursions in water vapor isotopic variability at the Pointe Benedicte observatory on Amsterdam Island

Abstract

In order to complement the picture of the atmospheric water cycle in the Southern Ocean, we have continuously monitored water vapor isotopes since January 2020 on Amsterdam Island in the Indian Ocean. We present here the first 2-year long water vapor isotopic record at this site. We show that the water vapor isotopic composition largely follows the water vapor mixing ratio, as expected in marine boundary layers. However, we detect 11 periods of a few days where there is a strong loss of correlation between water vapor δ18O and water vapor mixing ratio as well as abrupt negative excursions of water vapor δ18O. These excursions often occur toward the end of precipitation events. Six of these events show a decrease in gaseous elemental mercury, suggesting subsidence of air from a higher altitude. Our study aims to further explore the mechanism driving these negative excursions in water vapor δ18O. We used two different models to provide a data–model comparison over this 2-year period. While the European Centre Hamburg model (ECHAM6-wiso) at 0.9° was able to reproduce most of the sharp negative water vapor δ18O excursions, hence validating the physics process and isotopic implementation in this model, the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique Zoom model (LMDZ-iso) at 2° (3°) resolution was only able to reproduce seven (one) of the negative excursions, highlighting the possible influence of the model resolution for the study of such abrupt isotopic events. Based on our detailed model–data comparison, we conclude that the most plausible explanations for such isotopic excursions are rain–vapor interactions associated with subsidence at the rear of a precipitation event.

Abstract

Vaccination strategies aimed at maturing broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) from naïve precursors are hindered by unusual features that characterize these Abs, including insertions and deletions (indels). Longitudinal studies of natural HIV infection cases shed light on the complex processes underlying bnAb development and have suggested a role for superinfection as a potential enhancer of neutralization breadth. Here we describe the development of a potent bnAb lineage that was elicited by two founder viruses to inform vaccine design. The V3-glycan targeting bnAb lineage (PC39-1) was isolated from subtype C-infected IAVI Protocol C elite neutralizer, donor PC39, and is defined by the presence of multiple independent insertions in CDRH1 that range from 1-11 amino acids in length. Memory B cell members of this lineage are predominantly atypical in phenotype yet also span the class-switched and antibody-secreting cell compartments. Development of neutralization breadth occurred concomitantly with extensive recombination between founder viruses before each virus separated into two distinct population "arms" that evolved independently to escape the PC39-1 lineage. Ab crystal structures show an extended CDRH1 that can help stabilize the CDRH3. Overall, these findings suggest that early exposure of the humoral system to multiple related Env molecules could promote the induction of bnAbs by focusing Ab responses to conserved epitopes.

14. Senescence drives immunotherapy resistance by inducing an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment

Abstract The potential of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) may be limited in situations where immune cell fitness is impaired. Here, we show that the efficacy of cancer immunotherapies is compromised by the accumulation of senescent cells in mice and in the context of therapy-induced senescence (TIS). Resistance to immunotherapy is associated with a decrease in the accumulation and activation of CD8 T cells within tumors. Elimination of senescent cells restores immune homeostasis within the tumor micro-environment (TME) and increases mice survival in response to immunotherapy. Using single-cell transcriptomic analysis, we observe that the injection of ABT263 (Navitoclax) reverses the exacerbated immunosuppressive profile of myeloid cells in the TME. Elimination of these myeloid cells also restores CD8 T cell proliferation in vitro and abrogates immunotherapy resistance in vivo. Overall, our study suggests that the use of senolytic drugs before ICI may constitute a pharmacological approach to improve the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapies.

Abstract

We describe the design procedure, optimization, and fabrication cycle of an index-pattern FP laser on an InP platform. The design parameters of the ridge and reflector (based on slots) are extracted through simulations. In addition, the performance of reflectors with varying slot widths is analyzed. Subsequently, the extracted parameters are used in a rate equation model to predict the performance of the laser in terms of its L $ - $ I characteristics and the sidemode suppression ratio (SMSR). Moreover, the simulated results are compared with the experimental characterization of lasers fabricated with estimated design parameters revealing that the index-pattern laser with 0.3 $\mu $m slot width delivers the best performance by demonstrating a threshold current of ∼30 mA and $\text{SMSR} > \text{30 dB}$.

16. Electrically driven reprogrammable vanadium dioxide metasurface using binary control for broadband beam-steering

Abstract

Resonant optical phased arrays are a promising way to reach fully reconfigurable metasurfaces in the optical and NIR regimes with low energy consumption, low footprint and high reliability. Continuously tunable resonant structures suffer from inherent drawbacks such as low phase range, amplitude-phase correlation or extreme sensitivity that makes precise control at the individual element level very challenging. In order to bypass these issues, we use 1-bit (binary) control for beam steering for an innovative nano-resonator antenna and explore the theoretical capabilities of such phased arrays. A thermally realistic structure based on vanadium dioxide sandwiched in a metal-insulator-metal structure is proposed and optimized using inverse design to enhance its performance at 1550 nm. Continuous beam steering over 90{\deg} range is successfully achieved using binary control, with excellent agreement with predictions based on the theoretical first principles description of phased arrays. Furthermore a broadband response from 1500 nm to 1700 nm is achieved. The robustness of the design manufacturing imperfections is also demonstrated. This simplified approach can be implemented to optimize tunable nanophotonic phased array metasurfaces based on other materials or phased shifting mechanisms for various functionalities., Comment: Supplementary information available on request

Faisant suite au projet de recherche réalisé entre 2019 et 2021, La Littérature de terrain qui vise à réparer le monde, le présent article propose une lecture sociocritique d’un roman contemporain intitulé Cora dans la spirale (2019) de Vincent Message. Il convient de préciser l’emphase mise sur la démarche méthodologique afin de faciliter une future application de cette approche sociocritique pour tout lecteur à d’autres textes. Dans un premier temps, il s’agit d’élaborer un cadre théorico-critique qui fournisse les définitions des concepts-clé adaptés à ce récit littéraire : sociogramme, sociotexte/chronotope, médiations discursives et sociales qui concernent le domaine littéraire ainsi que deux autres critères fondamentaux pour la présente analyse, habitus et imaginaire social, empruntés à la sociologie. Ce référent définitionnel s’appuie sur l’apport de sociocriticiens et sociologues tels que Claude Duchet, Patrick Maurus, Pierre Popovic, Anthony Glinoer et Pierre Bourdieu, ou bien sur d’autres penseurs, François Hartog et Dominique Viart, entre autres, dans le but de nourrir notre lecture grâce à l’appropriation de catégories provenant d’autres disciplines. Dans un deuxième temps, ce même paradigme conceptuel sous-tend la lecture afin de révéler les rouages sociaux-économiques sous-jacents qui perturbent profondément l’existence des protagonistes. À ceci, il faut ajouter que l’approche proposée se veut ouverte et perfectible ainsi que le souhaite la sociocritique au pluriel, personnelle et collective, hétérogène et internationaliste. 22. From atmospheric water isotopes measurement to firn core interpretation in Adélie Land: a case study for isotope-enabled atmospheric models in Antarctica

Abstract

In a context of global warming and sea level rise acceleration, it is key to estimate the evolution of the atmospheric hydrological cycle and temperature in polar regions, which directly influence the surface mass balance of the Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets. Direct observations are available from satellite data for the last 40 years and a few weather data since the 1950s in Antarctica. One of the best ways to access longer records is to use climate proxies in firn or ice cores. The water isotopic composition in these cores is widely used to reconstruct past temperature variations. We need to progress in our understanding of the influence of the atmospheric hydrological cycle on the water isotopic composition of ice cores. First, we present a 2-year-long time series of vapor and precipitation isotopic composition measurement at Dumont d’Urville Station, in Adélie Land. We characterize diurnal variations of meteorological parameters (temperature, atmospheric water mixing ratio (hereafter humidity) and δ18O) for the different seasons and determine the evolution of key relationships (δ18O versus temperature or humidity) throughout the year: we find that the temperature vs. δ18O relationship is dependent on synoptic events dynamics in winter contrary to summer. Then, this data set is used to evaluate the atmospheric general circulation model ECHAM6-wiso (model version with embedded water stable isotopes) in a coastal region of Adélie Land where local conditions are controlled by strong katabatic winds which directly impact the isotopic signal. We show that a combination of continental (79 %) and oceanic (21 %) grid cells leads model outputs (temperature, humidity and δ18O) to nicely fit the observations, at different timescales (i.e., seasonal to synoptic). Therefore we demonstrate the added value of long-term water vapor isotopic composition records for model evaluation. Then, as a clear link is found between the isotopic composition of water vapor and precipitation, we assess how isotopic models can help interpret short firn cores. In fact, a virtual firn core built from ECHAM-wiso outputs explains much more of the variability observed in S1C1 isotopic record than a virtual firn core built from temperature only. Yet, deposition and post-deposition effects strongly affect the firn isotopic signal and probably account for most of the remaining misfits between archived firn signal and virtual firn core based on atmospheric modeling.

Abstract

The EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) Dome C (EDC) ice core drilling in East Antarctica reaches a depth of 3260 m. The reference EDC chronology, the AICC2012 (Antarctic Ice Core Chronology 2012), provides an age vs. depth relationship covering the last 800 kyr (thousands of years), with an absolute uncertainty rising up to 8000 years at the bottom of the ice core. The origins of this relatively large uncertainty are twofold: (1) the δ18Oatm, δO2/N2 and total air content (TAC) records are poorly resolved and show large gaps over the last 800 kyr, and (2) large uncertainties are associated with their orbital targets. Here, we present new highly resolved δ18Oatm, δO2/N2 and δ15N measurements for the EDC ice core covering the last five glacial–interglacial transitions; a new low-resolution TAC record over the period 440–800 ka BP (ka: 1000 years before 1950); and novel absolute 81Kr ages. We have compiled chronological and glaciological information including novel orbital age markers from new data on the EDC ice core as well as accurate firn modeling estimates in a Bayesian dating tool to construct the new AICC2023 chronology. For the first time, three orbital tools are used simultaneously. Hence, it is possible to observe that they are consistent with each other and with the other age markers over most of the last 800 kyr (70 %). This, in turn, gives us confidence in the new AICC2023 chronology. The average uncertainty in the ice chronology is reduced from 1700 to 900 years in AICC2023 over the last 800 kyr (1σ). The new timescale diverges from AICC2012 and suggests age shifts reaching 3800 years towards older ages over marine isotope stages (MISs) 5, 11 and 19. But the coherency between the new AICC2023 timescale and independent chronologies of other archives (Italian Lacustrine succession from Sulmona Basin, Dome Fuji ice core and northern Alpine speleothems) is improved by 1000 to 2000 years over these time intervals.

Abstract

The description of the hydrological cycle in Atmospheric General Circulation Models (GCMs) can be validated using water isotopes as tracers. Many GCMs now simulate the movement of the stable isotopes of water, but here we present the first GCM simulations modelling the content of natural tritium in water. These simulations were obtained using a version of the LMDZ General Circulation Model enhanced by water isotopes diagnostics, LMDZ-iso. To avoid tritium generated by nuclear bomb testing, the simulations have been evaluated against a compilation of published tritium datasets dating from before 1950, or measured recently. LMDZ-iso correctly captures the observed tritium enrichment in precipitation as oceanic air moves inland (the so-called continental effect) and the observed north-south variations due to the latitudinal dependency of the cosmogenic tritium production rate. The seasonal variability, linked to the stratospheric intrusions of air masses with higher tritium content into the troposphere, is correctly reproduced for Antarctica with a maximum in winter. LMDZ-iso reproduces the spring maximum of tritium over Europe, but underestimates it and produces a peak in winter that is not apparent in the data. This implementation of tritium in a GCM promises to provide a better constraint on: (1) the intrusions and transport of air masses from the stratosphere and (2) the dynamics of the modelled water cycle. 29. Fostering active choice to empower behavioral change to reduce cardiovascular risk: A web-based randomized controlled trial.

ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of an active choice (AC) intervention based on creating risk and choice awareness-versus a passive choice (PC) control group-on intentions and commitment to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk-reducing behavior.MethodsAdults aged 50-70 (n = 743) without CVD history participated in this web-based randomized controlled trial. The AC intervention included presentation of a hypothetical CVD risk in a heart age format, information about CVD risk and choice options, and a values clarification exercise. The PC group received a hypothetical absolute numerical CVD risk and brief information and advice about lifestyle and medication. Key outcomes were reported degree of active choice, intention strength, and commitment to adopt risk-reducing behavior.ResultsMore AC compared to PC participants opted for lifestyle change (OR = 2.86, 95%CI:1.51;5.44), or lifestyle change and medication use (OR = 2.78, 95%CI:1.42;5.46), than 'no change'. No differences were found for intention strength. AC participants made a more active choice than PC participants (β = 0.09, 95%CI:0.01;0.16), which was sequentially mediated by cognitive risk perception and negative affect. AC participants also reported higher commitment to CVD risk-reducing behavior (β = 0.32, 95%CI:0.04;0.60), mediated by reported degree of active choice.ConclusionsFostering active choices increased intentions and commitment towards CVD risk-reducing behavior. Increased cognitive risk perception and negative affect were shown to mediate the effect of the intervention on degree of active choice, which in turn mediated the effect on commitment. Future research should determine whether fostering active choice also improves risk-reducing behaviors in individuals at increased CVD risk in real-life settings.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05142280. 30. Identifying priority double-duty actions to tackle the double burden of malnutrition in infants and young children in Peru: Assessment and prioritisation of government actions by national experts.

Abstract

Multiple forms of malnutrition coexist in infants and young children (IYC) in Peru. The World Health Organization has proposed double-duty actions (DDAs) to simultaneously address undernutrition and overweight/obesity. We assessed current implementation of- and priority for- government-level actions to tackle multiple forms of malnutrition in IYC in Peru. Mapping of current policy activity was undertaken against 47 indicators of good practice for five DDAs (exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, food marketing, maternal nutrition, preschool nutrition; assessed by 27 indicators) and for the enabling policy environment, i.e., 'infrastructure support' (health in all policies, platforms for interactions, financing, monitoring, governance, leadership; assessed by 20 indicators). Interviews with 16 national experts explored views on the level of and barriers to implementation of DDAs and infrastructure support, as well as their prioritisation based on likely impact and feasibility. The level of implementation of actions was categorised into two groups (agenda setting/formulation vs. implementation/evaluation). Mean scores were generated for prioritisation of DDAs and infrastructure support. Deductive qualitative analysis was undertaken to identify barriers that influence policy implementation. Only 5/27 DDA indicators were reported as fully implemented by all national experts (international code that regulates the marketing of breastmilk substitutes, iron supplementation for IYC, micronutrient powders in IYC, iron/folic acid supplementation in pregnant women, paid maternity leave). Only 1/20 infrastructure support indicator (access to nutrition information) was rated as fully implemented by all experts. Barriers to implementing DDAs and infrastructure support included: legal feasibility or lack of regulations, inadequate monitoring/evaluation to ensure enforcement, commercial influences on policymakers, insufficient resources, shifting public health priorities with the COVID-19 pandemic and political instability. The experts prioritised 12 indicators across all five DDAs and eight infrastructure support indicators. Experts highlighted the need to improve implementation of all DDAs and identified ways to strengthen the enabling policy environment.

Abstract

We present an overview of best practices for publishing data in astronomy and astrophysics journals. These recommendations are intended as a reference for authors to help prepare and publish data in a way that will better represent and support science results, enable better data sharing, improve reproducibility, and enhance the reusability of data. Observance of these guidelines will also help to streamline the extraction, preservation, integration and cross-linking of valuable data from astrophysics literature into major astronomical databases, and consequently facilitate new modes of science discovery that will better exploit the vast quantities of panchromatic and multi-dimensional data associated with the literature. We encourage authors, journal editors, referees, and publishers to implement the best practices reviewed here, as well as related recommendations from international astronomical organizations such as the International Astronomical Union (IAU) for publication of nomenclature, data, and metadata. A convenient Checklist of Recommendations for Publishing Data in the Literature is included for authors to consult before the submission of the final version of their journal articles and associated data files. 36. A 2000-year temperature reconstruction on the East Antarctic plateau from argon–nitrogen and water stable isotopes in the Aurora Basin North ice core

Abstract

The temperature of the Earth is one of the most important climate parameters. Proxy records of past climate changes, in particular temperature, represent a fundamental tool for exploring internal climate processes and natural climate forcings. Despite the excellent information provided by ice core records in Antarctica, the temperature variability of the past 2000 years is difficult to evaluate from the low-accumulation sites in the Antarctic continent interior. Here we present the results from the Aurora Basin North (ABN) ice core (71∘ S, 111∘ E, 2690 m a.s.l.) in the lower part of the East Antarctic plateau, where accumulation is substantially higher than other ice core drilling sites on the plateau, and provide unprecedented insight into East Antarctic past temperature variability. We reconstructed the temperature of the last 2000 years using two independent methods: the widely used water stable isotopes (δ18O) and by inverse modelling of borehole temperature and past temperature gradients estimated from the inert gas stable isotopes (δ40Ar and δ15N). This second reconstruction is based on three independent measurement types: borehole temperature, firn thickness, and firn temperature gradient. The δ18O temperature reconstruction supports stable temperature conditions within 1 ∘C over the past 2000 years, in agreement with other ice core δ18O records in the region. However, the gas and borehole temperature reconstruction suggests that surface conditions 2 ∘C cooler than average prevailed in the 1000–1400 CE period and supports a 20th century warming of 1 ∘C. A precipitation hiatus during cold periods could explain why water isotope temperature reconstruction underestimates the temperature changes. Both reconstructions arguably record climate in their own way, with a focus on atmospheric and hydrologic cycles for water isotopes, as opposed to surface temperature for gas isotopes and boreholes. This study demonstrates the importance of using a variety of sources for comprehensive paleoclimate reconstructions.

Abstract

We present an age model for the 651 m deep ice core from Skytrain Ice Rise, situated inland of the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The top 2000 years have previously been dated using age markers interpolated through annual layer counting. Below this, we align the Skytrain core to the AICC2012 age model using tie points in the ice and air phase, and we apply the Paleochrono program to obtain the best fit to the tie points and glaciological constraints. In the gas phase, ties are made using methane and, in critical sections, δ18Oair; in the ice phase ties are through 10Be across the Laschamps event and through ice chemistry related to long-range dust transport and deposition. This strategy provides a good outcome to about 108 ka (∼ 605 m). Beyond that there are signs of flow disturbance, with a section of ice probably repeated. Nonetheless values of CH4 and δ18Oair confirm that part of the last interglacial (LIG), from about 117–126 ka (617–627 m), is present and in chronological order. Below this there are clear signs of stratigraphic disturbance, with rapid oscillation of values in both the ice and gas phase at the base of the LIG section, below 628 m. Based on methane values, the warmest part of the LIG and the coldest part of the penultimate glacial are missing from our record. Ice below 631 m appears to be of age > 150 ka.

ABSTRACTBackground Intrinsic values and priorities influence decision-making and are, therefore, important to consider explicitly in intervention development. Although health is generally considered an important value, individuals often make unhealthy choices, indicating a values disconnect.Study aim To investigate how becoming aware of a disconnect between the value assigned to health and the effort devoted to health is related to intentions and commitment for behavioural change and physical activity among inactive adults.Methods We performed a secondary exploratory analysis on previously collected data. The intervention included a values exercise based on the Disconnected Values Model (DVM) that made disconnected values explicit to participants in two study arms. We compared participants with a disconnect (n = 138) with participants without a disconnect (n = 101) regarding intentions and commitment for behavioural change and physical activity and sitting time 2–4 weeks follow-up. Logistic and linear regression analyses were performed to analyse the data.Results Between-group differences were found for the intention to devote more effort to health (OR = 3.75; 95%CI: 2.05; 6.86) and for the intention to become more physically active (OR = 2.21; 95%CI: 1.10; 4.46), indicating that significantly more participants with a disconnect were motivated to change, compared to participants without a disconnect. No between-group differences were found for commitment, intention strength, follow-up physical activity and sitting time.Conclusion Making explicit a disconnect regarding health in an active choice intervention was associated with intentions to become more physically active. Abstract

Abstract Multiple forms of malnutrition coexist in Peru, especially in peri‐urban areas and poor households. We investigated the magnitude of, and the contribution of, dietary and socio‐demographic factors to the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) at maternal (i.e., maternal overweight/obesity with anaemia) and dyad (i.e., maternal overweight/obesity with child anaemia) levels. A cross‐sectional survey was conducted among low‐income mother–child (6–23 months) dyads (n = 244) from peri‐urban communities in Peru. Dietary clusters and the minimum dietary diversity score (MDD) were generated for mothers and infants, respectively. A composite indicator using the maternal dietary clusters and the MDD was created to relate to dyad level DBM. Two dietary clusters were found: (i) the ‘high variety (i.e., animal‐source foods, fruit and vegetables), high sugary foods/beverages’ (cluster 1) and (ii) the ‘high potato, low fruit and vegetables, low red meat’ (cluster 2). DBM prevalence among mothers and dyads was 19.9% and 36.3%, respectively. Logistic regression analyses revealed that the only socio‐demographic factor positively associated with maternal DBM was maternal age (aOR/5 years: 1.35 [1.07, 1.71]). Mothers belonging to diet cluster 1 were less likely to experience the DBM (aOR = 0.52 [0.26, 1.03]), although CIs straddled the null. Socio‐demographic factors positively associated with dyad level DBM included maternal age (aOR/5 years: 1.41 [1.15, 1.73]), and having ≥ two children under 5 years (aOR = 2.44 [1.23, 4.84]). Diet was not associated with dyad‐level DBM. Double‐duty actions that tackle the DBM are needed given that one‐third of dyads and a fifth of mothers had concurrent overweight/obesity and anaemia.

Abstract

Background and purposeThe Meta-Analysis of Chemotherapy in squamous cell Head and Neck Cancer (MACH-NC) demonstrated that concomitant chemotherapy (CT) improved overall survival (OS) in patients without distant metastasis. We report the updated results.Materials and methodsPublished or unpublished randomized trials including patients with non-metastatic carcinoma randomized between 1965 and 2016 and comparing curative loco-regional treatment (LRT) to LRT + CT or adding another timing of CT to LRT + CT (main question), or comparing induction CT + radiotherapy to radiotherapy + concomitant (or alternating) CT (secondary question) were eligible. Individual patient data were collected and combined using a fixed-effect model. OS was the main endpoint.ResultsFor the main question, 101 trials (18951 patients, median follow-up of 6.5 years) were analyzed. Abstract

The isotopic composition of dioxygen in the atmosphere is a global tracer which depends on the biosphere flux of dioxygen toward and from the atmosphere (photosynthesis and respiration) as well as exchanges with the stratosphere. When measured in fossil air trapped in ice cores, the relative concentration of 16O, 17O, and 18O of O2 can be used for several applications such as ice core dating and past global productivity reconstruction. However, there are still uncertainties about the accuracy of these tracers as they depend on the integrated isotopic discrimination of different biological processes of dioxygen production and uptake, for which we currently have very few independent estimates. Here we determined the respiration and photosynthesis fractionation factors for atmospheric dioxygen from experiments carried out in a replicated vegetation–soil–atmosphere analogue of the terrestrial biosphere in closed chambers with growing Festuca arundinacea. The values for 18O discrimination during soil respiration and dark respiration in leaves are equal to -12.3±1.7 ‰ and -19.1±2.4 ‰, respectively. In these closed biological chambers, we also found a value attributed to terrestrial photosynthetic isotopic discrimination equal to +3.7±1.3 ‰. This last estimate suggests that the contribution of terrestrial productivity in the Dole effect may have been underestimated in previous studies.
