Abstract: International audience; Recompaction of tilled layers, under the effect of rainfall or irrigation only (i.e. without any external loading), was called slumping by Mullins et al. (1990). It has been observed in various soil types with negative effects on plant production. Our objective was to characterise the dynamics of slumping at the ploughed layer scale in a sandy soil of North East Thailand. An experimental field was tilled to two depths (20 and 40 cm) with or without ridges and furrows and was submitted i) to natural rainfall during two months (214mm in June and July 2007) or ii) to experimental flood irrigation (100 or 200 mm over some hours). Changes in bulk density with time were observed, particularly under flooding and after heavy daily rainfall. Final bulk density of 1.60 Mg m 3 has been measured over 20 cm depth while initial bulk density after tillage was 1.25 Mg m 3. Bulk density profiles were often characterised with two maximum values, either in the top layer (0-5 cm) or at the bottom of the ploughed layer (15-20 or 35-40 cm). We demonstrated that several processes occurred simultaneously: i) a redistribution of sand particles from the top of ridges to the bottom of furrows that decreased soil roughness, ii) a 2 to 5 cm topsoil collapse when water infiltrated, iii) a soil collapse at greater depths due to overburden pressure. These phenomena agree with the theory of granular material and the decrease in capillary forces between sand grains during wetting. The specific changes in bulk density profiles induced by rainfall should allow the occurrence of slumping to be predicted or identified as a function of soil, climate and tillage conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Rubber tree plantations (Hevea brasiliensis) cover large areas in the tropics. In historical producing regions like South Thailand, rubber has been planted by smallholders for three successive rotations lasting a total of 75 years. Despite possible consequences on topsoil, the long-term impacts of repeated rubber plantations on soil quality remain unknown. This study aims to better understand how various factors linked to long-term rubber land use and land use change affect topsoil physico-chemical properties and soil organic carbon (SOC) thermal stability. We focus on the effects of three factors: i. deforestation (change from forest to first rubber plantation); ii. the age of the rubber stand (immature vs. mature); and iii. long-term rubber cultivation (first, second or third successive rotation) over a chronosequence in farmers plots. Our results show that soil was deeply degraded after deforestation to a rubber plantation. Long-term rubber cultivation is also detrimental for the soil and has a more negative impact on soil physico-chemical properties and carbon dynamics, than the age of the rubber stand (e.g., on average, decrease of 50% of SOC content between forest and third rotation). At the third rotation, after 50 years of rubber cultivation, the quality of the 0-10 cm soil layer was very low, with an increase in SOC thermal stability. At this stage, logging practices upset the sustainability of the system. These impacts could be limited by less destructive practices during planting.

Abstract: International audience; The assessment of the impacts of land management on soil quality is crucial in the current environmental context. Among the many approaches available to assess soil quality, most of studies or monitoring programs consist in the measurement of stocks using an additive approach of physical, chemical and biological, parameters. More recently, functional methods have been developed to provide tools which better account the abioticbiotic interactions. The objective of our study was to evaluate and compare the capacity of physico-chemical, biological and functional parameters to assess the effect of land management on soil quality over a gradient of disturbance based on rubber tree plantations in Chachoengsao province, Thailand. Three sets of indicators were applied based on i. soil physico-chemical analyses, ii. biological analyses, based on soil free-living nematode indices iii. functional analyses, with Biofunctool (R) indicators linked to three main soil functions (carbon transformation, nutrient cycling, soil structure maintenance). A soil quality index resulting from the aggregation of each set of indicators into a single score showed that functional assessment was the most sensitive to the gradient of disturbance. Co-inertia analysis between sets revealed a significant relationship between functional analysis and both physico-chemical and biological sets of indicators, whereas the two latter were not related. Our results validated the ability of the functional method to better reflect the complexity of the abiotic-biotic interactions of the soil system.Highlights:• Three sets of soil quality indicators were compared.• Functional indicators were the most sensitive to the gradient of disturbance.• Functional set of indicators was significantly linked to physico-chemical and biological sets.• The functional method Biofunctool® integrate both soil biotic and abiotic components.

Abstract: International audience; In a context of global soil biodiversity loss, we need to findeffective way to measure the functions supported by biodiversity. Thisconstitutes the main challenge of soil health assessments,particularly in the agroecological transition context. The most shareddefinition of soil health is based on the ability of soil to function(Karlen et al., 1997) and to provide ecosystem services. However, mostmethods focus on stock measurements rather than functions. Also,measurements are usually performed in the laboratory, reflecting thepotential level of soil functions rather than true field performance.To overcome these methodological limitations, a new framework isproposed to assess soil health based on functional methods thatconsiders the links between abiotic and biotic soil compartments. Thismethod, called Biofunctool®, incorporates nine rapid, cost-effective,and in-field indicators to evaluate three main soil functions: Ctransformation, nutrient cycling, structure maintenance. The capacityof the set of indicators to assess the impact of land management onsoil health will be illustrated in various agroecological contexts inthe tropics. Biofunctool® allows to better understand the impacts ofagricultural practices on soil functions driven by soil biodiversityand could be in the future included in environmental analyses.

Abstract: International audience; Pradoo wood biochar has been tested in order to explore sustainable solutions to the development of agriculture on poor sandy soils in marginal areas in Northeast Thailand. Some basic physicochemical properties of biochar, for example pore size distribution, cation exchange capacity (CEC), specific surface area (SSA), and water and nutrient adsorption, were determined and compared to soil properties in order to determine appropriate biochar application to soil. Pradoo wood biochar showed important adsorption properties with high SSA, CEC and nutrient adsorption. The water retention properties were also improved on the dry end of the water retention curve. Phosphorous and ammonium adsorption-desorption isotherms were established and their respective affinity for the biochar surface was quantified, by the means of a retention index and thermodynamical parameters. We found that despite excellent retention properties, biochar needs to be added in large amounts (between 10 and 70 kg m(-2)) to soil to be able to modify noticeably the resulting soil properties.

Abstract: Due to high rainfall erosivity and rapid land-use changes, South-East Asia is one of the hot spots of soil degradation worldwide. In recent decades, several studies showed that the expansion of rubber tree (RT) plantations into previously forested areas has caused a major increase in soil erosion. However, the effects of cropland conversion to RT plantations on surface runoff and soil detachment are still unclear. Here we show that mature RT plantations considerably increase runoff and soil detachment compared to annual crops or young RT plantations with intercrop, mostly due to the absence of understorey. Monitoring 1 m2 microplots over four years in mountainous Northern Thailand, we found that runoff and detachment increased with time since the onset of the rainy season and with rainfall height, but more so in mature RT plantations than in young RT plantations and maize. This led to much higher annual soil detachment in mature RT plantations (5.7 kg/m2 on average) than in maize and young RT plantations with intercrop (0.36 kg/m2). We identified two main factors explaining this difference: first, rubber tree leaf litter, although abundant, seemed ineffective in reducing runoff at the end of the rainy season. Secondly, the cover by low-growing plants in mature rubber tree plantation was usually sparse and provided little protection. In particular we showed that increasing the cover by low-growing plants from quasi-null cover to >31% cover decreased runoff coefficient by 32%. Our results demonstrate that afforestation by RT, at least under current management practices and on steep slopes, is overall detrimental to soil conservation but that its effects could be mitigated by the adoption of less intense weeding practices.

Abstract: This study evaluated the influences of biochar made from local agricultural wastes on sandy soils in farmer fields where biochar has been used as a soil amendment for more than three years. The major objective of this study was to gain insight into the effects of long-term biochar application on properties of sandy soil. Unamended soil properties were compared to biochar-amended soils properties using the paired samples t-test (p < 0.05). The statistical results of the study indicated that cation exchange capacity, exchangeable potassium, available phosphorus, field capacity, plant available water, water-stable aggregate size fractions (> 1 and < 0.25 mm), median aggregate size and aggregate stability were significantly different at p < 0.05. Clearly, biochar present for 3 or more years can improve soil physicochemical properties. We conclude that sandy soil properties, especially soil physical properties, are very strongly affected by biochar application combined with conservative soil management. Biochars affect both physical and biological mechanisms of soil aggregate formation because the biochar particle sizes influence the arrangement of clay on biochar and biochar grains provide a favorable microbial habitat and food source for fungi creating microorganism-biochar-soil associations which enhance water-stable aggregates and water holding capacity.

Abstract: The assessment of the impacts of land-use and management on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics is a major environmental concern, as the soil carbon cycle underpins key ecosystem services. However, assessments based on short-term SOC dynamics face methodological and experimental difficulties. Hurisso et al. (2016) proposed a method to assess SOC dynamics by coupling two methods: Permanganate Oxidizable Carbon (POXC) and Basal Soil Respiration (BSR). This method has been used in laboratory on dried and re-wetted soil samples from temperate regions mainly. In our study, we adapted this method to the field and proposed a cost-effective in-field indicator combining the POXC and in situ Basal Soil Respiration (SituResp (R) method). We tested the indicator at four study sites (n = 169 points) within various tropical land-use and management contexts based on rubber, soybean and oil palm cropping systems respectively in Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia. The results demonstrated the relevance, sensitivity and robustness of the POXC-SituResp (R) indicator to characterize the impact of a gradient of disturbance on SOC dynamics. The results also highlighted the potential of conservation agriculture (no-tillage and crops residues) and compost amendments to accumulate SOC. Rock-Eval (R) analysis showed that POXC-SituResp (R) indicator is negatively linked to excess of potentially mineralizable labile carbon. Carbon pools targeted by the POXC were specified by Rock-Eval (R) pyrolysis measurements to be a rather thermal resistant pool of SOC. Our study confirms that the integrated indicator based on POXC and BSR assess a relative carbon stabilization of SOC pools. This indicator can be measured in the field by a rapid and cost-effective method.

Abstract: (IF 3.95; Q1); International audience; The rapid expansion of perennial crops is a major threat to biodiversity in Southeast Asia. The biodiversity losses related to the conversion of forest lands to oil palm or rubber plantations (RP) are well documented by recent studies. However, the impact of the conversion from intensively managed annual crops to perennial crops on soil biodiversity has not yet been addressed. This study aims at assessing the impact on soil biodiversity of a) the short-term effect of land use conversion from cassava crop to RP, and b) the long-term effect of RP ageing. Soil biodiversity (bacterial, fungal and macrofaunal), microbial activities and pedoclimatic characteristics were measured over a chronosequence of 1–25 years old of RP compared to cassava fields, the former crop, in Thailand. The conversion from cassava to young RP (1–3 yr) had a significant effect on microbial biomass and activities and fungal composition, but did not impact the bacterial and macrofaunal diversity. This effect of land use conversion could be explained by the change in land management due to the cultivation of pineapple in the inter-row of the young RP. Canopy closure appeared to be the main driver of soil biota shifts, as most of the biotic parameters, composition, abundance and activities were significantly modified after 7 years of RP. The changes of composition in older rubber plantations originated from the dominance of Trichoderma (fungi), Firmicutes (bacteria), and earthworms. Old rubber plantations (23–25 yr) harboured the highest microbial and macrofaunal biomass; however, they were also characterised by a significant decrease in bacterial richness. The change in pedoclimatic conditions across the rubber chronosequence, i.e. increase in soil moisture, litter and organic carbon content, was a stronger driver of soil biota evolution than land use conversion. The macrofaunal composition was more resistant to land use conversion than the bacterial composition, whereas the microbial biomass was sensitive to land use conversion, but showed resilience after 20 years. However, bacterial, fungal and macrofaunal diversity, macrofaunal and microbial biomass and microbial activities were all sensitive to RP ageing.

Abstract: International audience; In South-East Asia, rapid land use changes in recent decades have raised concerns for biodiversity and soil conservation. Weeds provide many ecosystemic services for soil protection and support biodiversity, and could mitigate the negative effects of intensification. We investigated the changes in weed assemblages and weed-soil interactions on a chronosequence from annual crops to mature rubber tree plantations. We sampled five fields for each of four land uses in mountainous northern Thailand (rainfed upland rice, maize, young rubber tree (RT) intercropped with maize, and mature RT). We characterized weed assemblages (abundance, richness) and soil properties (bulk density, water, carbon and nitrogen content). Rice had the most diverse and abundant weed assemblages. Weed assemblages differed between (i) rice, (ii) maize and young RT with maize and (iii) mature RT. Soil water content was the highest in mature RT. Other soil properties varied strongly within and among fields, and did not vary significantly among land uses. Water and nitrogen content increased overall with living soil cover but decreased with weed species richness in mature RT. Such interactions could provide a basis for sustainable weeding practices favourable to soil and biodiversity conservation.

Abstract: International audience; The expansion of rubber cultivation into drought prone areas calls for innovative management to increase the drought resistance of the trees. The competition for water exerted by an intercrop in the upper soil layers will likely stimulate the growth of young rubber tree roots into deeper soil layers where water availability is more stable. This study examined the effects of a legume (Pueraria phaseoloides) and a grass (Vetiveria zizanoides) intercrop, on the fine root traits of young rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis Müll. Arg.) established along a toposequence covering a range of soil depths in northeast Thailand. Two plots with and without the intercrops were set up in a 3-year-old rubber plantation. Tree girth, mortality rate, nutrient content in the leaves, predawn leaf water potential, and soil water content profiles were monitored over four successive years. Fine root length density, specific root length, fine root biomass, and fine root diameter of the rubber trees were measured in the fourth year. In shallow soils, the trees with the legume intercrop had a higher growth rate, a higher leaf nutrient content, and a higher fine root length density in the deepest soil layers than the controls, supporting the hypothesis of an adaptive root response, increasing drought resistance. However, the trees with the grass intercrop did not show this effect. In deep soils, specific root length was highest without the intercrops, and the soil water profile and predawn leaf water potential suggested that trees with intercrops benefited from increased water extraction below 110 cm depth. We showed, for the first time, that rubber tree root traits can be manipulated through intercropping to improve drought resistance. However, our results suggest intercropping might not reduce risks of tree mortality caused by drought in the shallowest soils of the subhumid area of northeast Thailand.

13. Transient thermal dissipation method of xylem sap flow measurement: multi-species calibration and field evaluation

Abstract: Summary The transient thermal dissipation (TTD) method developed by Do and Rocheteau (2002b )i s ac lose evolution of the original constant thermal dissipation (CTD) method of Granier (1985). The TTD method has the advantage of limiting the influence of passive natural temperature gradients and of yielding more stable zero-flux references at night. By analogy with the CTD method, the transient method was first calibrated on synthetic porous material (sawdust) on the assumption that the relationship was independent of the woody species. Here, our concern was to test the latter hypothesis with a 10-min heating time in three tropical species: Hevea brasiliensis Mull. Arg., Mangifera indica L. and Citrus maxima Merr. A complementary objective was to compare the field estimates of daily transpiration for mature rubber trees with estimates based on a simplified soil water balance in the dry season. The calibration experiments were carried out in the laboratory on cut stems using an HPFM device and gravimetric control of water flow up to 5 L dm −2 h −1 .N ineteen response curves were assessed on fully conductive xylem, combining 11 cut stems and two probes. The field evaluation comprised five periods from November 2007 to February 2008. Estimates of daily transpiration from the measurement of sap flow were based on the 41 sensors set up on 11 trees. Soil water depletion was monitored by neutron probe and 12 access tubes to a depth of 1.8 m. The calibrations confirmed that the response of the transient thermal index to flow density was independent of the woody species that were tested. The best fit was a simple linear response (R 2 =0 .88,n =2 76 and P < 0.0001). The previous calibration performed by Do and Rocheteau (2002b) on sawdust fell within the variability of the multi-species calibration; however, there were substantial differences with the average curve at extreme flow rates. Field comparison with soil water depletion in the dry season validated to a reasonable extent the absolute estimates of transpiration acquired with the 10-min TTD method. In conclusion, evidence for the independence of calibration from woody species and the simple linear response of the thermal index strengthen the interest of the TTD method with 10-min heating.

Email: patsae1@kku.ac.th; International audience; Organic amendment is a traditional practice for rehabilitating saline patches in north-east Thailand, but organic matter is known to enhance methane emission. However, a high degree of salinity might mitigate methane emission. The objective of the present study was to quantify the effects of salinity and organic amendments on methane emission from rain-fed paddy fields exposed to increasing salinity. A paddy field on a salt-affected Typic Natraqualfs was selected. Eighteen experimental plots were located in two randomized complete block designs placed inside and outside a saline patch. Each design of nine plots presented three replicates of two different organic amendments and a control treatment without organic amendment. During the rainy season the soil electrical conductivity, measured with an electromagnetic conductivity meter (ECEM), was greater than 300 mS m−1 inside the saline patch, whereas outside the saline patch the values were lower than 200 mS m−1. Rice straw (6.25 t ha−1) and cow manure (8.99 t ha−1), representing similar amounts of carbon, were incorporated. Methane emission from the soil, EC1:5 and soil redox potential (Eh) were monitored during the rice-growing season. High methane emission was mostly associated with low Eh, 48% of the Eh measurements were between −100 mV and −200 mV. In the saline patch, the average methane emission ranged from 251 to 334 mg CH4 m−2 day−1; outside the saline patch the values had a wider range from 209 to 544 mg CH4 m−2 day−1. The addition of rice straw or cow manure significantly enhanced methane emission by an approximate factor of 2.5 outside the saline patch, but did not significantly increase methane emission inside the saline patch. The attenuating effect of salinity on methane emission was particularly strong at the beginning of flooding during the first 20 days after transplanting and at the end of flooding (from 54 days after transplanting). When applied to saline patches, organic amendment did not significantly enhance methane emission in the first year.

Abstract: Compaction of tilled layers under the single effect of rainfall or irrigation was called slumping. Slumping affects strongly root development and plant biomass production. It has been observed in different soil types, but sandy soils appear particularly prone to this physical degradation. Our objectives in this study were (i) to measure in the field the changes in soil structure and water status simultaneously, (ii) to study the effects of rainfall and management practices on slumping, and (iii) to propose a conceptual model for sandy soil slumping. An experimental site was selected in Northeast Thailand and we studied the effect of tillage depth and initial water content on slumping dynamic. Plots (9 m × 15 m each) were tilled at (i) two depths (20 and 40 cm, called S and D respectively) in dry conditions, (ii) at 20 cm depth in dry or wet conditions (called Y and W respectively). These plots were submitted to natural rainfall for 20 or 61 days to get different total rainfall amounts (114 and 212 mm respectively). In addition, smaller plots (0.24 m 2 each) were used for experimental flooding irrigation (similar to measured rainfalls, i.e. 100 and 200 mm). Soil bulk density, soil surface elevation, soil water content and matric potential were measured. A decrease in soil elevation was observed in all treatments. In the absence of erosion it was interpreted as a loss of porosity which resulted from slumping. Bulk density increased in all layers of the tilled profile (from 1.38 to 1.57 g cm −3 ). In the surface layer (0–5 cm) this increase was systematically higher compared to deeper layer. No significant difference in final bulk density was found between the S and W treatments, and between the Y and W treatments. Bulk density increased more rapidly in the Y and W treatments than in the S and D treatments, even though the cumulative rainfall was lower. After the flooding experiments, bulk density was higher than after natural rainfall despite similar amounts of water added to the soil.

Abstract: International audience; In the sandy soils of northeast Thailand, root development is generally limited to the topsoil (0–20 cm depth) but a simple slotting intervention (20–40 cm) significantly increased the root frequency in the slotted material (Eslot) compared with the undisturbed subsoil (E horizon). The aim of this study was to investigate the consequences of slotting on the soil structure by analysing at different scales the pore characteristics of the original soil profile and of the soil material inside the slot. These characteristics were studied using bulk density measurements, image analysis of thin sections and mercury porosimetry. Our results showed that the total porosity of the E horizon and Eslot material was similar when measured in 100 cm3 cylinders, but that the pore size distribution had been changed by slotting. The unaltered E horizon contained mainly small pores characterized by a narrow distribution related to close packing of the sand grains, associated with some biological macropores probably with poor continuity as they did not contain roots despite their size. On average, pores were larger in the Eslot material, with a broader distribution resulting from looser packing of the sand grains but with fewer biological macropores. Although slotting reduced the number of biological pores, the looser packing appeared to be more favourable to root development than the presence of macropores in the E horizon. Finally, the comparison of the porosity in the different horizons with the porosity of the Eslot material, indicated the significance of the closeness of the sand packing on root development.

Abstract: Legacy soil data have been produced over 70 years in nearly all countries of the world. Unfortunately, data, information and knowledge are still currently fragmented and at risk of getting lost if they remain in a paper format. To process this legacy data into consistent, spatially explicit and continuous global soil information, data are being rescued and compiled into databases. Thousands of soil survey reports and maps have been scanned and made available online. The soil profile data reported by these data sources have been captured and compiled into databases. The total number of soil profiles rescued in the selected countries is about 800,000. Currently, data for 117, 000 profiles are compiled and harmonized according to GlobalSoilMap specifications in a world level database (WoSIS). The results presented at the country level are likely to be an underestimate. The majority of soil data is still not rescued and this effort should be pursued. The data have been used to produce soil property maps. We discuss the pro and cons of top-down and bottom-up approaches to produce such maps and we stress their complementarity. We give examples of success stories. The first global soil property maps using rescued data were produced by a top-down approach and were released at a limited resolution of 1 km in 2014, followed by an update at a resolution of 250 m in 2017. By the end of 2020, we aim to deliver the first worldwide product that fully meets the GlobalSoilMap specifications.
