Search

Materials composed of spin-1 antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains are known to adopt complex ground states which are sensitive to the single-ion-anisotropy (SIA) energy ($D$), and intrachain ($J_{0}$) and interchain ($J'_{i}$) exchange energy scales. While theoretical and experimental studies have extended this model to include various other energy scales, the effect of the lack of a common SIA axis is not well explored. Here we investigate the magnetic properties of Ni(pyrimidine)(H$_{2}$O)$_{2}$(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$, a chain compound where the tilting of Ni octahedra leads to a 2-fold alternation of the easy-axis directions along the chain. Muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate a transition to long-range order at $T_{\text{N}}=2.3$\,K and the magnetic structure is initially determined to be antiferromagnetic and collinear using elastic neutron diffraction experiments. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were used to find $J_{0} = 5.107(7)$\,K, $D = 2.79(1)$\,K, $J'_{2}=0.18(3)$\,K and a rhombic anisotropy energy $E=0.19(9)$\,K. Mean-field modelling reveals that the ground state structure hosts spin canting of $\phi\approx6.5^{\circ}$, which is not detectable above the noise floor of the elastic neutron diffraction data. Monte-Carlo simulation of the powder-averaged magnetization, $M(H)$, is then used to confirm these Hamiltonian parameters, while single-crystal $M(H)$ simulations provide insight into features observed in the data., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation ($\mu^{+}$SR) measurements of the van der Waals magnet NiI$_2$, which probe magnetic phase transitions at $T_{\mathrm{N1}}=73$K and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}=60$K. Supporting density functional theory (DFT) calculations allow the determination of a single muon stopping site whose magnetic environment is consistent with the proposed ground-state magnetic structure. $\mu^{+}$SR measurements of the dynamics reveal behavior consistent with spin-wave excitations below $T_{\mathrm{N2}}$, with an additional contribution from a nonmagnetic component of the material. We investigate the magnetic properties of $S=1$ antiferromagnetic diamond lattice, Ni$X_{2}$(pyrimidine)$_{2}$ ($X$ = Cl, Br), hosting a single-ion anisotropy (SIA) orientation which alternates between neighbouring sites. Through neutron diffraction measurements of the $X$ = Cl compound, the ordered state spins are found to align collinearly along a pseudo-easy-axis, a unique direction created by the intersection of two easy planes. Similarities in the magnetization, exhibiting spin-flop transitions, and the magnetic susceptibility in the two compounds imply that the same magnetic structure and a pseudo-easy-axis is also present for $X$ = Br. We estimate the Hamiltonian parameters by combining analytical calculations and Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations of the spin-flop and saturation field. The MC simulations also reveal that the spin-flop transition occurs when the applied field is parallel to the pseudo-easy-axis. Contrary to conventional easy-axis systems, there exist field directions perpendicular to the pseudo-easy-axis for which the magnetic saturation is approached asymptotically and no symmetry-breaking phase transition is observed at finite fields., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Centrosymmetric GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits a variety of multi-Q magnetic states as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field, including a square skyrmion-lattice phase. The material's behavior is strongly dependent on the direction of the applied field, with different phase diagrams resulting for fields applied parallel or perpendicular to the crystallographic $c$ axis. Here, we present the results of muon-spin relaxation ($\mu^+$SR) measurements on single crystals of GdRu$_2$Si$_2$. Our analysis is based on the computation of muon stopping sites and consideration of zero-point motion effects, allowing direct comparison with the underlying spin textures in the material. Using transverse-field $\mu^+$SR with fields applied along either the [001] or [100] crystallographic directions, we distinguish between the magnetic phases in this system via their distinct muon response, providing additional evidence for the skyrmion and meron-lattice phases, while also suggesting the existence of RKKY-driven muon hyperfine coupling. Zero-field $\mu^+$SR provides clear evidence for a transition between two distinct magnetically-ordered phases at 39 K., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Skyrmions are particle-like vortices of magnetization with non-trivial topology, which are usually stabilized by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) in noncentrosymmetric bulk materials. Exceptions are centrosymmetric Gd- and Eu-based skyrmion-lattice (SkL) hosts with net-zero DMI, where both the SkL stabilization mechanisms and magnetic ground states remain controversial. We address these by investigating both static and dynamic spin properties of the centrosymmetric SkL host Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$ using muon spectroscopy ($\mu$SR). We find that spin fluctuations in its non-coplanar SkL phase are highly anisotropic, implying that spin anisotropy plays a prominent role in stabilizing this phase. We also observe strongly-anisotropic spin dynamics in the ground-state (IC-1) incommensurate magnetic phase of the material, indicating that it is a meron-like multi-$q$ structure. Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ is a member of a family of orthorhombic nonsymmorphic rare-earth intermetallics that combines large localized magnetic moments and itinerant exchange with a low carrier density and perpendicular glide planes. This may result in special topological crystalline (wallpaper fermion) or axion insulating phases. Recent studies of Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ single crystals have revealed colossal negative magnetoresistance and multiple magnetic phase transitions. Here, we clarify this ordering process using neutron scattering, resonant elastic X-ray scattering, muon spin-rotation, and magnetometry. The nonsymmorphic and multisite character of Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ results in coplanar noncollinear magnetic structure with an Ising-like net magnetization along the $a$ axis. A reordering transition, attributable to competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings, manifests as the onset of a second commensurate Fourier component. In the absence of spatially resolved probes, the experimental evidence for this low-temperature state can be interpreted either as an unusual double-$q$ structure or in a phase separation scenario. The net magnetization produces variable anisotropic hysteretic effects which also couple to charge transport. The implied potential for functional domain physics and topological transport suggests that this structural family may be a promising platform to implement concepts of topological antiferromagnetic spintronics.

A glance at recent research on magnetism turns up a curious set of articles discussing, or claiming evidence for, a state of matter called a quantum spin liquid (QSL). These articles are notable in their invocation of exotic notions of topological physics, quantum entanglement, fractional quantum numbers, anyon statistics and gauge field theories. So what is a QSL and why do we need this complicated technical vocabulary to describe it? Our aim in this article is to introduce some of these concepts and provide a discussion of what a QSL is, where it might occur in Nature and why it is of interest. As we'll see, this is a rich subject which is still in development, and unambiguous evidence for the realisation of the QSL state in a magnetic material remains hotly debated. However, the payoff in terms of the special nature of quantum entanglement in the QSL, and its diverse spectrum of unusual excitations and topological status will (at least to some extent) justify the need to engage with some powerful, occasionally abstract, technical material.

We present the magnetic and structural properties of [Cu(pyrazine)$_{0.5}$(glycine)]ClO$_4$ under applied pressure. As previously reported, at ambient pressure this material consists of quasi-two-dimensional layers of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic dimers which undergo Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet excitations between two magnetic field-induced quantum critical points (QCPs). The molecular building blocks from which the compound is constructed give rise to exchange strengths that are considerably lower than those found in other $S = 1/2$ dimer materials, which allows us to determine the pressure evolution of the entire field-temperature magnetic phase diagram using radio-frequency magnetometry. We find that a distinct phase emerges above the upper field-induced transition at elevated pressures and also show that an additional QCP is induced at zero-field at a critical pressure of $p_{\rm c} = 15.7(5)$ kbar. Pressure-dependent single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations indicate that this QCP arises primarily from a dimensional crossover driven by an increase in the interdimer interactions between the planes. While the effect of quantum fluctuations on the lower field-induced transition is enhanced with applied pressure, quantum Monte Carlo calculations suggest that this alone cannot explain an unconventional asymmetry that develops in the phase diagram., Comment: To appear in Phys. The technique of muon spin rotation ({\mu}SR) has emerged in the last few decades as one of the most powerful methods of obtaining local magnetic information. To make the technique fully quantitative, it is necessary to have an accurate estimate of where inside the crystal structure the muon implants. This can be provided by density functional theory calculations using an approach that is termed DFT+{\mu}, density functional theory with the implanted muon included. This article reviews this approach, describes some recent successes in particular {\mu}SR experiments, and suggests some avenues for future exploration., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

We present a first-principles study of the effect of 3$d$ transition metal intercalation on the magnetic properties of the 2H-NbS$_2$ system, using spin-resolved density functional theory calculations to investigate the electronic structure of $N_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ ($N$ = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni). We are able to accurately determine the magnetic moments and crystal field splitting, and find that the magnetic properties of the materials are determined by a mechanism based on filling rigid bands with electrons from the intercalant. We predict the dominant magnetic interaction of these materials by considering Fermi surface nesting, finding agreement with experiment where data are available.

We present a first-principles investigation of the spin-ice state in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ using a magnetic source-free exchange and correlation functional, implemented in the Castep electronic-structure code. By comparing results from the conventional local spin-density approximation, we show that a spin-ice state in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ can be reliably obtained by removing the magnetic sources from the exchange and correlation contributions to the potential, and we contrast this against the computed ground states of other frustrated pyrochlore magnets.

Skyrmion-hosting multilayer stacks are promising avenues for applications, although little is known about the depth dependence of the magnetism. We address this by reporting the results of circular dichroic resonant elastic x-ray scattering (CD-REXS), micromagnetic simulations, and low-energy muon-spin rotation (LE-$\mu^+$SR) measurements on a stack comprising [Ta/CoFeB/MgO]$_{16}$/Ta on a Si substrate. Energy-dependent CD-REXS shows a continuous, monotonic evolution of the domain-wall helicity angle with incident energy, consistent with a three-dimensional hybrid domain-wall-like structure that changes from N\'eel-like near the surface to Bloch-like deeper within the sample. LE-$\mu^+$SR reveals that the magnetic field distribution in the trilayers near the surface of the stack is distinct from that in trilayers deeper within the sample. Our micromagnetic simulations support a quantitative analysis of the $\mu^+$SR results. By increasing the applied magnetic field, we find a reduction in the volume occupied by domain walls at all depths, consistent with a crossover into a region dominated by skyrmions above approximately 180 mT., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We report the manifestation of field-induced Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) correlations in the weakly coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg layers of the molecular-based bulk material [Cu(pz)$_2$(2-HOpy)$_2$](PF$_6$)$_2$. Due to the moderate intralayer exchange coupling of $J/k_\mathrm{B} = 6.8$ K, the application of laboratory magnetic fields induces a substantial $XY$ anisotropy of the spin correlations. Crucially, this provides a significant BKT regime, as the tiny interlayer exchange $J^\prime / k_\mathrm{B} \approx 1$ mK only induces 3D correlations upon close approach to the BKT transition with its exponential growth in the spin-correlation length. We employ nuclear magnetic resonance and $\mu^{+}$SR measurements to probe the spin correlations that determine the critical temperatures of the BKT transition as well as that of the onset of long-range order. Further, we perform stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo simulations based on the experimentally determined model parameters. Finite-size scaling of the in-plane spin stiffness yields excellent agreement of critical temperatures between theory and experiment, providing clear evidence that the nonmonotonic magnetic phase diagram of [Cu(pz)$_2$(2-HOpy)$_2$](PF$_6$)$_2$ is determined by the field-tuned $XY$ anisotropy and the concomitant BKT physics., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Strong quantum zero-point motion (ZPM) of light nuclei and other particles is a crucial aspect of many state-of-the-art quantum materials. However, it has only recently begun to be explored from an $\textit{ab initio}$ perspective, through several competing approximations. Here we develop a unified description of muon and light nucleus ZPM and establish the regimes of anharmonicity and positional quantum entanglement where different approximation schemes apply. Via density functional theory and path-integral molecular dynamics simulations we demonstrate that in solid nitrogen, $\alpha\unicode{x2013}$N$_2$, muon ZPM is both strongly anharmonic and many-body in character, with the muon forming an extended electric-dipole polaron around a central, quantum-entangled [N$_2\unicode{x2013}\mu\unicode{x2013}$N$_2$]$^+$ complex. By combining this quantitative description of quantum muon ZPM with precision muon quadrupolar level-crossing resonance experiments, we independently determine the static $^{14}$N nuclear quadrupolar coupling constant of pristine $\alpha\unicode{x2013}$N$_2$ to be $-5.36(2)$ MHz, a significant improvement in accuracy over the previously-accepted value of $-5.39(5)$ MHz, and a validation of our unified description of light-particle ZPM., Comment: Main text: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. We present magnetization and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements of N\'{e}el skyrmion-host GaV$_4$S$_8$ under the application of hydrostatic pressures up to $P=2.29$ GPa. Our results suggest that the magnetic phase diagram is altered with pressure via a reduction in the crossover temperature from the cycloidal (C) to ferromagnetic-like state with increasing $P$, such that, by 2.29 GPa, the C state appears to persist down to the lowest measured temperatures. With the aid of micromagnetic simulations, we propose that the driving mechanism behind this change is a reduction in the magnetic anisotropy of the system, and suggest that this could lead to an increase in stability of the skyrmion lattice., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Significant progress has recently been made in calculating muon stopping sites using density functional theory. The technique aims to address two of the most common criticisms of the muon-spin spectroscopy ($\mu^+$SR) technique, namely, where in the sample does the muon stop, and what is its effect on its local environment. We have designed and developed a program called MuFinder that enables users to carry out these calculations through a simple graphical user interface (GUI). The procedure for calculating muon sites by generating initial muon positions, relaxing the structures, and then clustering and analysing the resulting candidate sites, can be done entirely within the GUI. The local magnetic field at the muon site can also be computed, allowing the connection between the muon sites obtained and experiment to be made. MuFinder will make these computations significantly more accessible to non-experts and help to establish muon site calculations as a routine part of $\mu^+$SR experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We present here a study of the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic dimer material CuVOF$_4$(H$_2$O)$_6\cdot$H$_2$O, in which the dimer unit is composed of two different $S = 1/2$ species, Cu(II) and V(IV). An applied magnetic field of $\mu_0H_{\rm c1} = 13.1(1)~\rm T$ is found to close the singlet-triplet energy gap, the magnitude of which is governed by the antiferromagnetic intradimer, $J_0 \approx 21~\rm K$, and interdimer, $J' \approx 1~\rm K$, exchange energies, determined from magnetometry and electron-spin resonance measurements. The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations are consistent with the experimental results and predicts antiferromagnetic coupling along all nearest-neighbor bonds, with the magnetic ground state comprising spins of different species aligning antiparallel to one another, while spins of the same species are aligned parallel. The magnetism in this system cannot be accurately described by the overlap between localized V orbitals and magnetic Cu orbitals lying in the Jahn-Teller (JT) plane, with a tight-binding model based on such a set of orbitals incorrectly predicting that interdimer exchange should be dominant. DFT calculations indicate significant spin density on the bridging oxide, suggesting instead an unusual mechanism in which intradimer exchange is mediated through the O atom on the Cu(II) JT axis., Comment: Main - 12 pages, 11 figures. Muons implanted into ionic fluorides often lead to a so-called F-mu-F state, in which the time evolution of the muon spin contains information about the geometry and nature of the muon site. Nuclei more distant from the muon than the two nearest-neighbor fluorine ions result in decoherence of the F-mu-F system and this can yield additional quantitative information about the state of the muon. We demonstrate how this can be applied to the determination of muon sites within the ionic fluorides alpha-PbF2 and YF3 which contain fluoride ions in different crystallographic environments. Our results can be used to distinguish between different crystal phases and reveal the presence of anion Frenkel defects in alpha-PbF2., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present a systematic investigation of muon-stopping states in superconductors that reportedly exhibit spontaneous magnetic fields below their transition temperatures due to time-reversal symmetry breaking. These materials include elemental rhenium, several intermetallic systems and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We demonstrate that the presence of the muon leads to only a limited and relatively localized perturbation to the local crystal structure, while any small changes to the electronic structure occur several electron volts below the Fermi energy leading to only minimal changes in the charge density on ions close to the muon. Our results imply that the muon-induced perturbation alone is unlikely to lead to the observed spontaneous fields in these materials, whose origin is more likely intrinsic to the time-reversal symmetry broken superconducting state., Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 3 figures. The helimagnets Cr$_{1/3}M$S$_2$ ($M$ = Nb or Ta) have attracted renewed attention due to the discovery of a chiral soliton lattice (CSL) stabilized in an applied magnetic field, but reports of unusual low-temperature transport and magnetic properties in this system lack a unifying explanation. Here we present electronic structure calculations that demonstrate the materials are half-metals. There is also a gap-like feature (width in range 40-100 meV) in the density of states of one spin channel. This electronic structure explains the low-temperature electronic and magnetic properties of Cr$_{1/3}M$S$_2$ ($M$ = Nb or Ta), with the gap-like feature particularly important for explaining the magnetic behavior. Our magnetometry measurements confirm the existence of this gap. Dynamic spin fluctuations driven by excitations across this gap are seen over a wide range of frequencies (0.1 Hz to MHz) with AC susceptibility and muon-spin relaxation ($\mu^+$SR) measurements. We show further how effects due to the CSL in Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$, as detected with $\mu^+$SR, dominate over the gap-driven magnetism when the CSL is stabilized as the majority phase., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report muon spin relaxation and magnetometry studies of bulk Mn$_{1.4}$Pt$_{0.9}$Pd$_{0.1}$Sn and MnNiGa, two materials which have recently been proposed to host topological magnetic states in thin lamella (antiskyrmions for Mn$_{1.4}$Pt$_{0.9}$Pd$_{0.1}$Sn and biskyrmions for MnNiGa), and show spin reorientation transitions in bulk. These measurements shed light on the magnetic dynamics surounding the two magnetic phase transitions in each material. In particular, we demonstrate that the behaviour approaching the higher temperature transition in both samples is best understood by considering a slow decrease in the frequency of dynamics with temperature, rather than the sharp critical slowing down typical of second order transitions. Furthermore, at low temperatures the two samples both show spin dynamics over a broad range of frequencies that persist below the spin reorienation transition. The dynamic behavior we identify gives new insight into the bulk magnetism of these materials that may help underpin the stabilization of the topologically non-trivial phases that are seen in thin lamellae., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present longitudinal-field muon-spin relaxation (LF $\mu$SR) measurements on two systems that stabilize a skyrmion lattice (SkL): Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, and Co$_x$Zn$_y$Mn$_{20-x-y}$ for $(x,y)~=~(10,10)$, $(8,9)$ and $(8,8)$. We find that the SkL phase of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ exhibits emergent dynamic behavior at megahertz frequencies, likely due to collective excitations, allowing the SkL to be identified from the $\mu$SR response. From measurements following different cooling protocols and calculations of the muon stopping site, we suggest that the metastable SkL is not the majority phase throughout the bulk of this material at the fields and temperatures where it is often observed. The dynamics of bulk Co$_8$Zn$_9$Mn$_3$ are well described by $\simeq~2$ GHz excitations that reduce in frequency near the critical temperature, while in Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ we observe similar behavior over a wide range of temperatures, implying that dynamics of this kind persist beyond the SkL phase., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We report the results of muon-spin spectroscopy ($\mu^+$SR) measurements on the staggered molecular spin chain [pym-Cu(NO$_3$)$_2$(H$_2$O)$_2$] (pym = pyrimidine), a material previously described using sine-Gordon field theory. Zero-field $\mu^+$SR reveals a long range magnetically-ordered ground state below a transition temperature $T_\mathrm{N}=0.22(1)$ K. Using longitudinal-field (LF) $\mu^+$SR we investigate the dynamic response in applied magnetic fields $0< B < 500$ mT and find evidence for ballistic spin transport. Our LF $\mu^+$SR measurements on the chiral spin chain [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6 \cdot $H$_2$O instead demonstrate one-dimensional spin diffusion and the distinct spin transport in these two systems likely reflects differences in their magnetic excitations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We report a comprehensive muon spectroscopy study of the Zn-barlowite series of $S={\frac{1}{2}}$ kagom\'e antiferromagnets, Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr, for $x=0.00$ to $0.99(1)$. By combining muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements with state-of-the-art density-functional theory muon-site calculations, we observe the formation of both $\mu$--F and $\mu$--OH complexes in Zn-barlowite. From these stopping sites, implanted muon spins reveal the suppression of long-range magnetic order into a possible quantum spin liquid state upon increasing concentration of Zn-substitution. In the parent compound ($x=0$), static long-range magnetic order below $T_{\mathsf{N}}=15$ K manifests itself in the form of spontaneous oscillations in the time-dependent muon asymmetry signal consistent with the dipolar fields expected from the calculated muon stopping sites and the previously determined magnetic structure of barlowite. Meanwhile, in the $x=1.0$ end-member of the series---in which antiferromagnetic kagom\'e layers of Cu$^{2+}$ $S={\frac{1}{2}}$ moments are decoupled by diamagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ ions---we observe that dynamic magnetic moment fluctuations persist down to at least 50 mK, indicative of a quantum disordered ground state. We demonstrate that this crossover from a static to dynamic magnetic ground state occurs for compositions of Zn-barlowite with $x>0.5$, which bears resemblance to dynamical behaviour of the widely studied Zn-paratacamite series that contains the quantum spin liquid candidate herbertsmithite., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, supplementary information

We report on a comprehensive characterization of the newly synthesized Cu$^{2+}$-based molecular magnet [Cu(pz)$_2$(2-HOpy)$_2$](PF$_6$)$_2$ (CuPOF), where pz = C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$ and 2-HOpy = C$_5$H$_4$NHO. From a comparison of theoretical modeling to results of bulk magnetometry, specific heat, $\mu^+$SR, ESR, and NMR spectroscopy, this material is determined as an excellent realization of the 2D square-lattice $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a moderate intraplane nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of $J/k_\mathrm{B} = 6.80(5)$ K, and an extremely small interlayer interaction of about 1 mK. At zero field, the bulk magnetometry reveals a temperature-driven crossover of spin correlations from isotropic to $XY$ type, caused by the presence of a weak intrinsic easy-plane anisotropy. A transition to long-range order, driven by the low-temperature $XY$ anisotropy under the influence of the interlayer coupling, occurs at $T_\mathrm{N} = 1.38(2)$ K, as revealed by $\mu^+$SR. In applied magnetic fields, our $^1$H-NMR data reveal a strong increase of the magnetic anisotropy, manifested by a pronounced enhancement of the transition temperature to commensurate long-range order at $T_\mathrm{N} =2.8$ K and 7 T., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, as well as 10 pages and 18 figures of supplemental material

We present an investigation of the effect of randomizing exchange strengths in the $S=1/2$ square lattice quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QuinH)$_2$Cu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_{4}\cdot$2H$_2$O (QuinH$=$Quinolinium, C$_9$H$_8$N$^+$), with $0\leq x \leq 1$. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements allow us to estimate an effective in-plane exchange strength $J$ in a regime where exchange fosters short-range order, while the temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ at which long range order (LRO) occurs is found using muon-spin relaxation, allowing us to construct a phase diagram for the series. We evaluate the effectiveness of disorder in suppressing $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ and the ordered moment size and find an extended disordered phase in the region $0.4 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.8$ where no magnetic order occurs, driven by quantum effects of the exchange randomness., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We present an investigation of the influence of low-levels of chemical substitution on the magnetic ground state and N{\' e}el skyrmion lattice (SkL) state in GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$, where $y =0, 0.1, 7.9$, and $8$. Muon-spin spectroscopy ($\mu$SR) measurements on $y=0$ and 0.1 materials reveal the magnetic ground state consists of microscopically coexisting incommensurate cycloidal and ferromagnetic environments, while chemical substitution leads to the growth of localized regions of increased spin density. $\mu$SR measurements of emergent low-frequency skyrmion dynamics show that the SkL exists under low-levels of substitution at both ends of the series. Skyrmionic excitations persist to temperatures below the equilibrium SkL in substituted samples, suggesting the presence of skyrmion precursors over a wide range of temperatures., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The ground state of the simple Heisenberg nearest-neighbor quantum kagome antiferromagnetic model is a magnetically disordered spin liquid, yet various perturbations may lead to fundamentally different states. Here we disclose the origin of magnetic ordering in the structurally-perfect kagome material YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, which is free of the widespread impurity problem. {\it Ab-initio} calculations and modeling of its magnetic susceptibility reveal that, similar to the archetypal case of herbertsmithite, the nearest-neighbor exchange is by far the dominant isotropic interaction. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) magnetic anisotropy deduced from electron spin resonance and specific-heat measurements is, however, significantly larger than in herbertsmithite. By enhancing spin correlations within kagome planes, this anisotropy is essential for magnetic ordering. We present the results of muon-spin relaxation ($\mu^{+}$SR) measurements on antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin chains. In antiferromagnetic CuF$_{2}$(pyz) we identify a transition to long range magnetic order taking place at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 0.6(1)$ K, allowing us to estimate a ratio with the intrachain exchange of $T_{\mathrm{N}}/|J| \approx 0.1$ and the ratio of interchain to intrachain exchange coupling as $|J'/J| \approx 0.05$. The ferromagnetic chain [Sm(hfac)$_{3}$(boaDTDA)]$_{n}$ undergoes an ordering transition at $T_{\mathrm{c}}=2.8(1)$ K, seen via a broad freezing of dynamic fluctuations on the muon (microsecond) timescale and implying $T_{\mathrm{c}}/|J| \approx 0.6$. The ordered radical moment continues to fluctuate on this timescale down to 0.3 K, while the Sm moments remain disordered. In contrast, the radical spins in [La(hfac)$_{3}$(boaDTDA)]$_{n}$ remain magnetically disordered down to $T=0.1$ K suggesting $T_{\mathrm{c}}/|J| < 0.17$., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the low-temperature magnetic properties of the molecule-based chiral spin chain [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6\cdot$H$_2$O (pym = pyrimidine). Electron-spin resonance, magnetometry and heat capacity measurements reveal the presence of staggered $g$ tensors, a rich low-temperature excitation spectrum, a staggered susceptibility and a spin gap that opens on the application of a magnetic field. These phenomena are reminiscent of those previously observed in non-chiral staggered chains, which are explicable within the sine-Gordon quantum-field theory. In the present case, however, although the sine-Gordon model accounts well for the form of the temperature-dependence of the heat capacity, the size of the gap and its measured linear field dependence do not fit with the sine-Gordon theory as it stands. We propose that the differences arise due to additional terms in the Hamiltonian resulting from the chiral structure of [Cu(pym)(H$_2$O)$_4$]SiF$_6\cdot$H$_2$O, particularly a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling and a four-fold periodic staggered field., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures and supplemental information

We present the results of x-ray scattering and muon-spin relaxation ($\mu^{+}$SR) measurements on the iron-pnictide compound FeCrAs. Polarized non-resonant magnetic x-ray scattering results reveal the 120$^\circ$ periodicity expected from the suggested three-fold symmetric, non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure. $\mu^+$SR measurements indicate a magnetically ordered phase throughout the bulk of the material below $T_\mathrm{N}$=105(5) K. There are signs of fluctuating magnetism in a narrow range of temperatures above $T_\mathrm{N}$ involving low-energy excitations, while at temperatures well below $T_\mathrm{N}$ behaviour characteristic of freezing of dynamics is observed, likely reflecting the effect of disorder in our polycrystalline sample. Using density functional theory we propose a distinct muon stopping site in this compound and assess the degree of distortion induced by the implanted muon.

The layered honeycomb iridate $\alpha$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ displays an incommensurate magnetic structure with counterrotating moments on nearest-neighbor sites, proposed to be stabilized by strongly-frustrated anisotropic Kitaev interactions between spin-orbit entangled Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moments. Here we report powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements that observe sharply dispersive low-energy magnetic excitations centered at the magnetic ordering wavevector, attributed to Goldstone excitations of the incommensurate order, as well as an additional intense mode above a gap $\Delta\simeq2.3$ meV. Zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements show clear oscillations in the muon polarization below the N\'{e}el temperature $T_{\rm N}\simeq15$ K with a time-dependent profile consistent with bulk incommensurate long-range magnetism. Pulsed field magnetization measurements observe that only about half the saturation magnetization value is reached at the maximum field of 64 T. A clear anomaly near 25 T indicates a transition to a phase with reduced susceptibility. The transition field has a Zeeman energy comparable to the zero-field gapped mode, suggesting gap suppression as a possible mechanism for the field-induced transition., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Previous observations of metastable magnetic skyrmions have shown that close to the equilibrium pocket the metastable state has a short lifetime, and therefore rapid cooling is required to generate a significant skyrmion population at low temperatures. Here, we report that the lifetime of metastable skyrmions in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ is extended by a factor of 50 with the introduction of only 2.5% zinc doping, allowing over 50% of the population to survive when field-cooling at a rate of just 1 K/min. Our systematic study suggests that the lifetime enhancement is due to the removal of spins by the non-magnetic dopant, which entropically limits the number of skyrmion decay pathways. We expect that doping can be exploited to control the lifetime of the metastable SkL state in other chiral magnets, offering a method of engineering skyrmion materials towards application in future devices., Comment: 9 Pages, 7 Figures, submission in progress

Magnetic doping with transition metal ions is the most widely used approach to break timereversal symmetry in a topological insulator, a prerequisite for unlocking the TIs exotic potential. Recently, we reported the doping of Bi2Te3 thin films with rare earth ions, which, owing to their large magnetic moments, promise commensurately large magnetic gap openings in the topological surface states. However, only when doping with Dy has a sizable gap been observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, which persists up to room-temperature. Although disorder alone could be ruled out as a cause of the topological phase transition, a fundamental understanding of the magnetic and electronic properties of Dy:Bi2Te3 remained elusive. Here, we present an X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, polarized neutron reflectometry, muon spin rotation, and resonant photoemission study of the microscopic magnetic and electronic properties. We find that the films are not simply paramagnetic but that instead the observed behavior can be well explained by the assumption of slowly fluctuating, inhomogeneous magnetic patches with increasing volume fraction as the temperature decreases. At liquid helium temperatures, a large effective magnetization can be easily introduced by the application of moderate magnetic fields, implying that this material is very suitable for proximity coupling to an underlying ferromagnetic insulator or in a heterostructure with transition metal-doped layers. However, the introduction of some charge carriers by the dopants cannot be excluded at least in these highly doped samples. Nevertheless, we find that the magnetic order is not mediated via the conduction channel in these rare earth doped samples and therefore magnetic order and carrier concentration are expected to be independently controllable. We present an investigation into the structural and magnetic properties of Zn-substituted Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$, a system in which the skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase in the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram was previously seen to split as a function of increasing Zn concentration. We find that splitting of the SkL is only observed in polycrystalline samples and reflects the occurrence of several coexisting phases with different Zn content, each distinguished by different magnetic behaviour. We present the results of muon-spin spectroscopy ($\mu^{+}$SR) measurements on the molecular spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$, [Hpip=(C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)]. Using transverse field $\mu^{+}$SR we are able to identify characteristic behaviour in each of the regions of the phase diagram of the $x=0$ strong-rung spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$. Comparison of our results to those of the dimer-based molecular magnet Cu(pyz)(gly)(ClO$_{4}$) shows several common features. We locate the crossovers in partially disordered (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$ ($x=0.05$), where a region of behaviour intermediate between quantum disordered and Luttinger liquid-like is identified. Our interpretation of the results incorporates an analysis of the probable muon stopping states in (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$ based on density functional calculations and suggests how the muon plus its local distortion can lead to a local probe unit with good sensitivity to the magnetic state. Using longitudinal field $\mu^{+}$SR we compare the dynamic response of the $x=1$ strong-rung material (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ to that of the strong-leg material (C$_{7}$H$_{10}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ (known as DIMPY) and demonstrate that our results are in agreement with predictions based on interacting fermionic quasiparticle excitations in these materials., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Cu(pyz)(NO3)2 is a quasi one-dimensional molecular antiferromagnet that exhibits three dimensional long-range magnetic order below TN=110 mK due to the presence of weak inter-chain exchange couplings. Here we compare calculations of the three largest exchange coupling constants in this system using two techniques based on plane-wave basis-set density functional theory: (i) a dimer fragment approach and (ii) an approach using periodic boundary conditions. The calculated values of the large intrachain coupling constant are found to be consistent with experiment, showing the expected level of variation between different techniques and implementations. However, the interchain coupling constants are found to be smaller than the current limits on the resolution of the calculations. This is due to the computational limitations on convergence of absolute energy differences with respect to basis set, which are larger than the inter-chain couplings themselves. Our results imply that errors resulting from such limitations are inherent in the evaluation of small exchange constants in systems of this sort, and that many previously reported results should therefore be treated with caution., Comment: 10 Pages, 6 figures

We report a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction studies, Mossbauer spectroscopy and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements to probe the structure and magnetic properties of the semiconducting beta-Ce2O2FeSe2 oxychalcogenide. We report a new structural description in space group Pna21 which is consistent with diffraction data and second harmonic generation measurements and reveal an order-disorder transition on one Fe site at TOD ~ 330 K. Susceptibility measurements, Mossbauer and muSR reveal antiferromagnetic ordering below TN = 86 K and more complex short range order above this temperature. 12 K neutron diffraction data reveal a modulated magnetic structure with q = 0.444 bN*., Comment: 29 pages

Coupling between a crystal of di(phenyl)-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)iminoazanium radicals and a superconducting microwave resonator is investigated in a circuit quantum electrodynamics (circuit QED) architecture. The crystal exhibits paramagnetic behavior above 4~K, with antiferromagnetic correlations appearing below this temperature, and we demonstrate strong coupling at base temperature. The magnetic resonance acquires a field angle dependence as the crystal is cooled down, indicating anisotropy of the exchange interactions. These results show that multispin modes in organic crystals are suitable for circuit QED, offering a platform for their coherent manipulation. They also utilize the circuit QED architecture as a way to probe spin correlations at low temperature.

We present the results of resonant x-ray scattering measurements and electronic structure calculations on the monoarsenide FeAs. We elucidate details of the magnetic structure, showing the ratio of ellipticity of the spin helix is larger than previously thought, at 2.58(3), and reveal both a right-handed chirality and an out of plane component of the magnetic moments in the spin helix. We find that electronic structure calculations and analysis of the spin-orbit interaction are able to qualitatively account for this canting., Comment: 11 pages, 12 Figures

We present the magnetic and thermal properties of the bosonic-superfluid phase in a spin-dimer network using both quasistatic and rapidly-changing pulsed magnetic fields. The entropy derived from a heat-capacity study reveals that the pulsed-field measurements are strongly adiabatic in nature and are responsible for the onset of a significant magnetocaloric effect (MCE). In contrast to previous predictions we show that the MCE is not just confined to the critical regions, but occurs for all fields greater than zero at sufficiently low temperatures. We explain the MCE using a model of the thermal occupation of exchange-coupled dimer spin-states and highlight that failure to take this effect into account inevitably leads to incorrect interpretations of experimental results. In addition, the heat capacity in our material is suggestive of an extraordinary contribution from zero-point fluctuations and appears to indicate universal behavior with different critical exponents at the two field-induced critical points. We demonstrate that quantum-critical spin dynamics can be probed in high magnetic fields using muon-spin relaxation ($\mu^{+}$SR). Our model system is the strong-leg spin ladder bis(2,3-dimethylpyridinium) tetrabromocuprate (DIMPY). In the gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase we observe finite-temperature scaling of the $\mu^{+}$SR $1/T_1$ relaxation rate which allows us to determine the Luttinger parameter $K$. Pressure-induced ordering close to a $z=1$ quantum critical point is studied in the presence of bond disorder in the quantum spin system (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_{x}$)$_6$ (PHCX) by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation. As for the pure system (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$, pressure allows PHCX with small levels of disorder ($x\leq 7.5\%$) to be driven through a quantum critical point separating a low-pressure quantum paramagnetic phase from magnetic order at high pressures. However, the pressure-induced ordered state is highly inhomogeneous for disorder concentrations $x>1\%$. This behavior might be related to the formation of a quantum Griffiths phase above a critical disorder concentration $7.5\%

We report magnetization, heat capacity, 7Li - nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and muSR (muon spin roration) measurements on the honeycomb 4d5 spin liquid candidate Li2RhO3. The magnetization in small magnetic fields provides evidence of the partial spin-freezing of a small fraction of Rh4+ -moments at 6 K, whereas the Curie-Weiss behavior above 100 K suggests a pseudo-spin-1/2 paramagnet with a moment of about 2.2 muB. The magnetic specific heat (Cm) exhibits no field dependence and demonstrates the absence of long range magnetic order down to 0.35 K. Cm/T passes through a broad maximum at about 10 K and Cm=T^2 at low temperatures. Measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) reveal a gapless slowing down of spin fluctuations upon cooling with 1/T1=T^2.2. The results from NMR and muSR are consistent with a scenario in which a minority of Rh4+ moments are in a ahort-range correlated frozen state and coexist with a majority of moments in a liquid-like state that continue to fluctuate at low temperatures.

We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations we identify a candidate muon stopping site within the unit cell, which dipole field simulations show to be consistent with the proposed magnetic structure. The possibility of incommensurate magnetic ordering is discussed for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=53~{\rm K}$ and 25~K for Sr$_{2}$YOsO$_6$ and Sr$_{2}$InOsO$_6$, respectively.

We present the results of transverse-field muon-spin rotation measurements on an epitaxially grown 40 nm-thick film of MnSi on Si(111) in the region of the field-temperature phase diagram where a skyrmion phase has been observed in the bulk. We identify changes in the quasistatic magnetic field distribution sampled by the muon, along with evidence for magnetic transitions around $T\approx 40$ K and 30 K.
