The aim of this study was to qualify and compare the secondary cancer risk (SCR) after intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. Patients and methods: We analyzed the treatment plans of a cohort of 10 NPC patients originally treated with IMRT or VMAT. Dose distributions in these plans were used to calculate the organ equivalent dose (OED) with Schneider’s full model. Analyses were applied to the brain stem, spinal cord, oral cavity, pharynx, parotid glands, lung, mandible, healthy tissue, and planning target volume. Results: We observed that the OED-based risks of SCR were slightly higher for the oral cavity and mandible when VMAT was used. No significant difference was found in terms of the doses to other organs, including the brain stem, parotids, pharynx, submandibular gland, lung, spinal cord, and healthy tissue. In the NPC cohort, the lungs were the organs that were most sensitive to radiation-induced cancer. Conclusion: VMAT afforded superior results in terms of organ-at-risk-sparing compared with IMRT. Most OED-based second cancer risks for various organs were similar when VMAT and IMRT were employed, but the risks for the oral cavity and mandible were slightly higher when VMAT was used. Highly selective extraction of uranium from seawater is currently extremely challenging. Although the amidoxime group (HAO) is the commonly used ligand in seawater uranium extraction, it also has strong binding capacity for vanadium ion. It has been shown that the introduction of phosphate groups into amidoxime-based adsorbents can improve the adsorption performance of materials through a synergistic effect between functional groups. In this work, we have systematically investigated the selective extraction behavior of the phosphate ligand (methylphosphonic acid, HL 1 ) for uranyl cation and the synergistic effect with amidoxime using density functional theory (DFT). The electron-donor-substituted derivatives of HL 1 (aminomethylphosphonic acid (HL 2 ) and methyl phosphate (HL 3 )) were also considered. Not unexpectedly, the results show that introduction of HL 1 into the amidoxime-based adsorbents improves the extraction and selectivity for uranyl cations. This is mainly due to the fact that HL 1 is more likely to deprotonate, which promotes the dissociation of [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4- , and the presence of the phosphate groups in the synergistic complexes alters the optimal coordination mode of VO 2 + . In addition, the HL 2 and HL 3 ligands further improve the uranium extraction performance, especially for HL 3 . This work provides guidelines for the rational design of sequestering ligands for uranium extraction from seawater.

The chemistry of molten salts has attracted great research interest owing to their wide applications in diverse fields. In the pyrochemical reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel or molten salt nuclear reactors, lanthanide elements as the principal fission products bring about changes in the composition and properties of molten salts. Herein, we report a comprehensive study on the coordination chemistry of the representative trivalent lanthanide ions (La 3+ /Nd 3+ ) in LiCl-KCl-CsCl using a multiscale strategy combining Raman spectroscopy, deep learning, and large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The neural network potential (NNP)-based MD and Raman spectroscopy studies revealed that La 3+ /Nd 3+ ions prefer to form persistent octahedron complexes with the six-coordinated species as the dominant species at high temperatures. Compared to LaCl 6 3- , NdCl 6 3- shows higher stability with obviously longer lifetimes in LiCl-KCl-CsCl, as confirmed by the observed stronger interaction of Nd 3+ -Cl - pairs. The total and partial structure factors further indicated the formation of a more stable network structure in LiCl-KCl-CsCl containing NdCl 3 . Besides, the temperature exerts a larger influence on the local structures of the La 3+ species compared to the Nd 3+ analogues. According to the potential mean force calculations, the bond dissociation energies follow the order Ln-Cl > Li-Cl > K-Cl > Cs-Cl in LiCl-KCl-CsCl-LnCl 3 . The NNP-based large-scale MD simulations have been verified to be an efficient and powerful way in molten salt chemistry research.

Inter-metalloid clusters in Zintl chemistry have been extensively studied due to their unique electronic structures and potential applications. In this work, we explored a series of actinide endohedral inter-metalloid clusters of the group 15 elements [An@Bi 12 ] 4- (An = Th-U) and [An@Sb 12 ] 4- using density functional theory (DFT). [Th@Bi 12 ] 4- and [U@Bi 12 ] 4- exhibit C s symmetry, while [Pa@Bi 12 ] 4- and [An@Sb 12 ] 4- (An = Th-U) have C 1 structures. Bonding analyses such as bond order, molecular orbitals (MO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) show covalent An-Bi/An-Sb bonding in the clusters. All these clusters are highly stable according to the studied formation reactions and may be accessible experimentally. Compared with [An@Bi 12 ] 4- , [An@Sb 12 ] 4- possesses stronger bonding interactions, mainly arising from the higher electrostatic interaction energy. For clusters with the same group 15 elements, the bonding interactions increase gradually from Th to U, which is mainly determined by the covalent interactions of An-Bi/An-Sb bonding. This work is expected to provide potential avenues for the construction of robust inter-metalloid clusters of the group 15 elements.

Phosphate deficiency and drought are significant environmental constraints that impact both the productivity and quality of wheat. The interaction between phosphorus and water facilitates their mutual absorption processes in plants. Under conditions of both phosphorus deficiency and drought stress, we observed a significant upregulation in the expression of wheat MYB-CC transcription factors through the transcriptome analysis. 52 TaMYB-CC genes in wheat were identified and analyzed their evolutionary relationships, structures, and expression patterns. The TaMYB-CC5 gene exhibited specific expression in roots and demonstrated significant upregulation under phosphorus deficiency and drought stress compared to other TaMYB-CC genes. The overexpression of TaMYB-CC5A in Arabidopsis resulted in a significant increase of root length under stress conditions, thereby enhancing tolerance to phosphate starvation and drought stress. The wheat lines with silenced TaMYB-CC5 genes exhibited reduced root length under stress conditions and increased sensitivity to phosphate deficiency and drought stress. In addition, silencing the TaMYB-CC5 genes resulted in altered phosphorus content in leaves but did not lead to a reduction in phosphorus content in roots. Enrichment analysis the co-expression genes of TaMYB-CC5 transcription factors, we found the zinc-induced facilitator-like (ZIFL) genes were prominent associated with TaMYB-CC5 gene. The TaZIFL1, TaZIFL2, and TaZIFL5 genes were verified specifically expressed in roots and regulated by TaMYB-CC5 transcript factor. Our study reveals the pivotal role of the TaMYB-CC5 gene in regulating TaZIFL genes, which is crucial for maintaining normal root growth under phosphorus deficiency and drought stress, thereby enhanced resistance to these abiotic stresses in wheat., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. Objective: To investigate clinical efficacy of parasacral perforator flap (PPF) on postoperative wound healing in pilonidal sinus diseases (PSDs). Methods: The surgery steps were as follows: (1) To preoperatively detect parasacral perforator arteries with the handhold Doppler probe and mark them; (2) To remove the infected and necrotic tissues of PSDs completely; (3) To design the PPF according to the wound size and the parasacral perforator arteries' localization; (4) To harvest the flap from the gluteus maximus muscle surface and transfer it to the wound without tension. Several data were documented, including surgical duration, flap length, flap width, drainage tube placement duration, hospital stay, duration from operation to stitch removal, postsurgical complications and recurrence. Results: There were six patients with PSDs whose postoperative wound healing was repaired by PPF, admitted in our department from March 2021 to March 2023. Of them, five were male and one was female. Their median age was 24 (range: 18-33) years old. Their median surgical duration was 165 (range: 134-207) minutes, median length of PPF was 8 (range: 7-11) cm, median width of PPF was 3 (range: 3-4) cm, mean duration of drainage tube placement was 8 (range: 4-17) days, mean hospital stay was 13 (range: 6-23) days, mean duration from operation to stitch removal was 14 (range: 14-17) days, median follow-up time was 6-16 months. Incisions of all six cases achieved first-intention healing without early- or late-stage complications. No recurrence occurred during follow-up. All patients involved were satisfied with their clinical efficacy. Conclusion: The utility of PPF in postoperative wound healing of PPDs was effective, safe and reliable.

Excellent "CHON" compatible ligands based on a heterocyclic skeleton for the separation of trivalent actinides [An(III)] from lanthanides [Ln(III)] have been widely explored, the aim being spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. The combination mode of a soft/hard (N/O) donor upon the coordination chemistry of An(III) and Ln(III) should play a vital role with respect to the performance of ligands. As such, in this work, two typical experimentally available phenanthroline-derived tetradentate ligands, CyMe 4 -BTPhen ( L 1 ) and Et-Tol-DAPhen ( L 4 ), and two theoretically designed asymmetric tetradentate heterocyclic ligands, L 2 and L 3 , with various N/O donors were investigated using scalar relativistic density functional theory. We have evaluated the electronic structures of L 1 - L 4 and their coordination modes, bonding properties, and extraction reactions with Am(III) and Eu(III). We found that the Am/Eu-N interactions play a more important role in the orbital interactions between the ligand and Am(III)/Eu(III) ions. Compared with those of L 1 , the coordinated O atoms of L 2 and L 4 weaken the metal-N bonds. The Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity follows the order L 1 > L 2 > L 4 based on the change in Gibbs free energy, reflecting the fact that the Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity of the ligand is affected by the number of coordinated N atoms. In addition, L 3 displays the strongest binding ability for Am(III)/Eu(III) ions and the smallest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity among the four ligands, due to its structural preorganization. This work clarifies the influence of the number of coordinated N and O atoms of ligands on Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, which provides valuable fundamental information for the design of efficient ligands with N and O donors for An(III)/Ln(III) separation.

Background: Kidney transplantation is the optimal treatment for end-stage renal disease. However, highly sensitized patients (HSPs) have reduced access to transplantation, leading to increased morbidity and mortality on the waiting list. The Canadian Willingness to Cross (WTC) program proposes allowing transplantation across preformed donor specific antibodies (DSA) determined to be at a low risk of rejection under the adaptive design framework. This study collected patients' perspectives on the development of this program., Methods: Forty-one individual interviews were conducted with kidney transplant candidates from three Canadian transplant centers in 2022. The interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed for subsequent analyses., Results: Despite limited familiarity with the adaptive design, participants demonstrated trust in the researchers. They perceived the WTC program as a pathway for HSPs to access transplantation while mitigating transplant-related risks. HSPs saw the WTC program as a source of hope and an opportunity to leave dialysis, despite acknowledging inherent uncertainties. Some non-HSPs expressed concerns about fairness, anticipating increased waiting times and potential compromise in kidney graft longevity due to higher rejection risks. Participants recommended essential strategies for implementing the WTC program, including organizing informational meetings and highlighting the necessity for psychosocial support., Conclusion: The WTC program emerges as a promising strategy to enhance HSPs' access to kidney transplantation. While HSPs perceived this program as a source of hope, non-HSPs voiced concerns about distributive justice issues. Separation of lanthanide (Ln) and minor actinide (MA) elements and mutual separation between minor actinide elements ( e.g. Am(III) and Cm(III)) represent a crucial undertaking. However, separating these elements poses a significant challenge owing to their highly similar physicochemical properties. Asymmetric N-heterocyclic ligands such as N -ethyl-6-(1 H -pyrazol-3-yl)- N -( p -tolyl)picolinamide (Et- p -Tol-A-PzPy) and N -ethyl- N -( p -tolyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxamide (ETPhenAm) have recently received considerable attention in the separation of MAs over Ln from acid solutions. By changing the central skeleton structures of these ligands and introducing substituents with different properties on the side chains, their complexation behavior with Am(III), Cm(III), and Eu(III) may be affected. In this work, we explore four different asymmetric N-containing heterocyclic ligands, namely Et- p -Tol-A-PzPy (L 1 ), N -ethyl-6'-(1 H -pyrazol-3-yl)- N -( p -tolyl)-[2,2'-bipyridine]-6-carboxamide (L 2 ), N -ethyl-9-(1 H -pyrazol-3-yl)- N -( p -tolyl)-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxamide (L 3 ), and ETPhenAm (L 4 ) using density functional theory (DFT). The calculated results demonstrate the potential of ligands L 1 -L 4 for the extraction and separation of Am(III), Cm(III), and Eu(III). Ligand analysis shows that ligand L 3 binds more easily to the central metal atom, in line with the stronger extraction capacity of L 3 . In spite of the higher covalence between the side chain and the central metal atom for complexes with L 1 -L 3 , the main chain seems to control the stability of the extraction complexes. The preorganized 1,10-phenanthroline backbone also further enhances the extraction performance of L 3 and L 4 . The difference in coordination ability between the side chain donors of these ligands and metal ions may affect their separation efficiency. This work presents theoretical insights into synthesizing novel ligands for separating trivalent actinides by adjusting N-heterocyclic ligands.

The optimal immunosuppression management in patients with a failed kidney transplant remains uncertain. This study analyzed the association of class II HLA eplet mismatches and maintenance immunosuppression with allosensitization after graft failure in a well characterized cohort of 21 patients who failed a first kidney transplant. A clinically meaningful increase in cPRA in this study was defined as the cPRA that resulted in 50% reduction in the compatible donor pool measured from the time of transplant failure until the time of repeat transplantation, death, or end of study. The median cPRA at the time of failure was 12.13% (interquartile ranges = 0.00%, 83.72%) which increased to 62.76% (IQR = 4.34%, 99.18%) during the median follow-up of 27 (IQR = 18, 39) months. High HLA-DQ eplet mismatches were significantly associated with an increased risk of developing a clinically meaningful increase in cPRA ( p = 0.02) and de novo DQ donor-specific antibody against the failed allograft ( p = 0.02). We did not observe these associations in patients with high HLA-DR eplet mismatches. Most of the patients (88%) with a clinically meaningful increase in cPRA had both a high DQ eplet mismatch and a reduction in their immunosuppression, suggesting the association is modified by immunosuppression. Blood testing is a crucial application in the field of clinical studies for disease diagnosis and screening, biomarker discovery, organ function assessment, and the personalization of medication. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to collect precise data in a short time. In this study, we utilized Raman spectroscopy to analyze blood samples for the extraction of comprehensive biological information, including the primary components and compositions present in the blood. Short-wavelength (532 nm green light) Raman scattering spectroscopy was applied for the analysis of the blood samples, plasma, and serum for detection of the biological characteristics in each sample type. Our results indicated that the whole blood had a high hemoglobin content, which suggests that hemoglobin is a major component of blood. The characteristic Raman peaks of hemoglobin were observed at 690, 989, 1015, 1182, 1233, 1315, and 1562-1649 cm -1 . Analysis of the plasma and serum samples indicated the presence of β-carotene, which exhibited characteristic peaks at 1013, 1172, and 1526 cm -1 . This novel 3D silicon micro-channel device technology holds immense potential in the field of medical blood testing. It can serve as the basis for the detection of various diseases and biomarkers, providing real-time data to help medical professionals and patients better understand their health conditions. Changes in biological data collected in this manner could potentially be used for clinical diagnosis.

Introduction: The immune responses of kidney transplant recipients against SARS-CoV-2 remains under studied., Methods: In this prospective pilot study, we performed comprehensive immune profiling using cellular, proteomic, and serologic assays on a cohort of 9 kidney transplant recipients and 12 non-transplant individuals diagnosed with COVID-19., Results: Our data show that in addition to having reduced SARS-CoV-2 specific antibody levels, kidney transplant recipients exhibited significant cellular differences including a decrease in naïve-but increase in effector T cells, a high number of CD28+ CD4 effector memory T cells, and increased CD8 T memory stem cells compared with non-transplant patients. Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) has transformed clinical histocompatibility laboratories through its capacity to provide accurate, high-throughput, high-resolution typing of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genes, which is critical for transplant safety and success. As this technology becomes widely used for clinical genotyping, histocompatibility laboratories now have an increased capability to identify novel HLA alleles that previously would not be detected using traditional genotyping methods. Standard guidelines for the clinical verification and reporting of novelties in the era of NGS are greatly needed. Here, we describe the experience of a clinical histocompatibility laboratory's use of NGS for HLA genotyping and its management of novel alleles detected in an ethnically-diverse population of British Columbia, Canada. Over a period of 18 months, 3,450 clinical samples collected for the purpose of solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation were sequenced using NGS. Overall, 29 unique novel alleles were identified at a rate of ∼1.6 per month. The majority of novelties (52%) were detected in the alpha chains of class II (HLA-DQA1 and -DPA1). Novelties were found in all 11 HLA classical genes except for HLA-DRB3, -DRB4, and -DQB1. All novelties were single nucleotide polymorphisms, where more than half led to an amino acid change, and one resulted in a premature stop codon. Missense mutations were evaluated for changes in their amino acid properties to assess the potential effect on the novel HLA protein. All novelties identified were confirmed independently at another accredited HLA laboratory using a different NGS assay and platform to ensure validity in the reporting of novelties. The novel alleles were submitted to the Immuno Polymorphism Database-Immunogenetics/HLA (IPD-IMGT/HLA) for official allele name designation and inclusion in future database releases. A nationwide survey involving all Canadian HLA laboratories confirmed the common occurrence of novel allele detection but identified a wide variability in the assessment and reporting of novelties. In summary, a considerable proportion of novel alleles were identified in routine clinical testing. Moisture harvesters with favourable attributes such as easy synthetic availability and good processability as alternatives for atmospheric moisture harvesting (AWH) are desirable. This study reports a novel nonporous anionic coordination polymer (CP) of uranyl squarate with methyl viologen (MV 2+ ) as charge balancing ions (named U-Squ-CP) which displays intriguing sequential water sorption/desorption behavior as the relative humidity (RH) changes gradually. The evaluation of AWH performance of U-Squ-CP shows that it can absorb water vapor under air atmosphere at a low RH of 20 % typical of the levels found in most dry regions of the world, and have good cycling durability, thus demonstrating the capability as a potential moisture harvester for AWH. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on non-porous organic ligand bridged CP materials for AWH. Moreover, a stepwise water-filling mechanism for the water sorption/desorption process is deciphered by comprehensive characterizations combining single-crystal diffraction, which provides a reasonable explanation for the special moisture harvesting behaviour of this non-porous crystalline material., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The separation of plutonium (Pu) from spent nuclear fuel was achieved by effectively adjusting the oxidation state of Pu from +IV to +III in the plutonium uranium reduction extraction (PUREX) process. Acetaldoxime (CH 3 CHNOH) as a free salt reductant can rapidly reduce Pu(IV), but the reduction mechanism remains indistinct. Herein, we explore the reduction mechanism of two Pu(IV) ions by one CH 3 CHNOH molecule, where the second Pu(IV) reduction is the rate-determining step with the energy barrier of 19.24 kcal mol -1 , which is in line with the experimental activation energy (20.95 ± 2.34 kcal mol -1 ). Additionally, the results of structure and spin density analyses demonstrate that the first and second Pu(IV) reduction is attributed to hydrogen atom transfer and hydroxyl ligand transfer, respectively. Analysis of localized molecular orbitals unveils that the reduction process is accompanied by the breaking of the Pu-O OH bond and the formation of the O OH -H and C-O OH bonds. The reaction energies confirm that the reduction of Pu(IV) by acetaldoxime is both thermodynamically and kinetically accessible. In this work, we elucidate the reduction mechanism of Pu(IV) with CH 3 CHNOH, which provides a theoretical understanding of the rapid reduction of Pu(IV).

Adaptation to drought and salt stresses is a fundamental part of plant cell physiology and is of great significance for crop production under environmental stress. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones that play a crucial role in folding, assembling, translocating, and degrading proteins. However, their underlying mechanisms and functions in stress tolerance remain elusive. Here, we identified the HSP TaHSP17.4 in wheat by analyzing the heat stress-induced transcriptome. Further analysis showed that TaHSP17.4 was significantly induced under drought, salt, and heat stress treatments. Intriguingly, yeast-two-hybrid analysis showed that TaHSP17.4 interacts with the HSP70/HSP90 organizing protein (HOP) TaHOP, which plays a significant role in linking HSP70 and HSP90. We found that TaHSP17.4- and TaHOP-overexpressing plants have a higher proline content and a lower malondialdehyde content than wild-type plants under stress conditions and display strong tolerance to drought, salt, and heat stress. Additionally, qRT-PCR analysis showed that stress-responsive genes relevant to reactive oxygen species scavenging and abscisic acid signaling pathways were significantly induced in TaHSP17.4- and TaHOP-overexpressing plants under stress conditions. Separation of minor actinides from lanthanides is one of the biggest challenges in spent fuel reprocessing due to the similar physicochemical properties of trivalent lanthanides (Ln(III)) and actinides (An(III)). Therefore, developing ligands with excellent extraction and separation performance is essential at present. As an excellent pre-organization platform, calixarene has received more attention on Ln(III)/An(III) separation. In this work, we systematically explored the complexation behaviors of the diglycolamide (DGA)/dimethylacetamide (DMA)-functionalized calix[4]arene extractants for Eu(III) and Am(III) using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). These calix[4]arene-derived ligands were obtained by functionalization with two or four binding units at the narrow edge of the calix[4]arene platform. All bonding nature analyses suggested that the Eu-L complexes possess stronger interaction compared to Am-L analogues, resulting in the higher extraction capacity of the these calix[4]arene ligands toward Eu(III). Thermodynamic analysis demonstrates that these pre-organized ligands on the calix[4]arene platform with four binding units yield better extraction abilities than the single ligands. Although DMA-functionalized ligands show stronger complexation stability for metal ions, in acidic solutions, the calix[4]arene ligands with DGA binding units have better extraction performance for Eu(III) and Am(III) due to the basicity of the DMA ligand. This work enabled us to gain a deeper understanding of the bonding properties between supramolecular ligands and lanthanides/actinides and afford useful insights into designing efficient supramolecular ligands for separating Ln(III)/An(III).

An efficient approach to Np separation in the Plutonium Uranium Reduction EXtraction (PUREX) process is to adjust Np(VI) to Np(V) by free-salt reductants, such as hydrazine and its derivatives. Recently, carbohydrazide (CO(N 2 H 3 ) 2 ), a derivative of hydrazine and urea, has received much attention, which can reduce Np(VI) to Np(V) in the extraction reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. Herein, according to the experimental observations, we examine the reduction mechanism of four Np(VI) by one carbohydrazide molecule using multiple theoretical calculations. The fourth Np(VI) reduction with a 22.26 kcal mol -1 energy barrier is the rate-determining step, which is in accordance with the experimental observations (20.54 ± 1.20 kcal mol -1 ). The results of spin density reflect that the reduction of the first and third Np(VI) ion is an outer-sphere electron transfer, while that of the second and fourth Np(VI) ion is the hydrogen transfer. Localized molecular orbitals (LMOs) uncover that the breaking of the N-H bond and formation of the O yl -H bond are accompanied by the reaction from initial complexes (ICs) to intermediates (INTs). This work offers basic perspectives for the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) to Np(V) by CO(N 2 H 3 ) 2 , which is also expected to design excellent free-salt Np(VI) reductants for the separation of Np in the advanced PUREX process.

Background: The Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) is a percentile score summarizing the likelihood of allograft failure: A KDPI ≥85% is associated with shorter allograft survival, and 50% of these donated kidneys are not currently used for transplantation. Preemptive transplantation (transplantation without prior maintenance dialysis) is associated with longer allograft survival than transplantation after dialysis; however, it is unknown whether this benefit extends to high-KDPI transplants. The objective of this analysis was to determine whether the benefit of preemptive transplantation extends to recipients of transplants with a KDPI ≥85%., Methods: This retrospective cohort study compared the post-transplant outcomes of preemptive and nonpreemptive deceased donor kidney transplants using data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. 120,091 patients who received their first, kidney-only transplant between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2017, were studied, including 23,211 with KDPI ≥85%. Of this cohort, 12,331 patients received a transplant preemptively. Time-to-event models for the outcomes of allograft loss from any cause, death-censored graft loss, and death with a functioning transplant were performed., Results: Compared with recipients of nonpreemptive transplants with a KDPI of 0%-20% as the reference group, the risk of allograft loss from any cause in recipients of a preemptive transplant with KDPI ≥85% (hazard ratio [HR], 1.51; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39 to 1.64) was lower than that in recipients of nonpreemptive transplant with a KDPI ≥85% (HR, 2.39; 95% CI, 2.21 to 2.58) and similar to that of recipients of a nonpreemptive transplant with a KDPI of 51%-84% (HR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.52 to 1.70)., Conclusions: Preemptive transplantation is associated with a lower risk of allograft failure, irrespective of KDPI, and preemptive transplants with KDPI ≥85% have comparable outcomes with nonpreemptive transplants with KDPI 51%-84%., (Copyright © 2023 by the American Society of Nephrology.)

Background: We aimed to investigate perineal nerve block versus periprostatic block in pain control for men undergoing a transperineal prostate biopsy., Methods: In this prospective, randomised, blinded and parallel-group trial, men in six Chinese hospitals with suspected prostate cancer were randomly assigned (1:1) at the point of local anaesthesia to receive a perineal nerve block or periprostatic block and followed by a transperineal prostate biopsy. Centres used their usual biopsy procedure. Operators who performed anaesthesia were trained in both techniques before the trial and were masked to the randomised allocation until the time of anaesthesia and were not involved in the subsequent biopsy procedure and any assessment or analysis. Other investigators and the patients were masked until trial completion. The primary outcome was the level of the worst pain experienced during the prostate biopsy procedure. Secondary outcomes included pain (post-biopsy at 1, 6 and 24 h), changes in blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate during the biopsy procedure, external manifestations of pain during biopsy, anaesthesia satisfaction, the detection rate of PCa and clinically significant PCa. This trial is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04501055., Findings: Between August 13, 2020, and July 20, 2022, 192 men were randomly assigned to perineal nerve block or periprostatic block, 96 per study group. Perineal nerve block was superior for the relief of pain during the biopsy procedure (mean 2.80 for perineal nerve block and 3.98 for periprostatic block; adjusted difference in means -1.17, P < 0.001). Although the perineal nerve block had a lower mean pain score at 1 h post-biopsy compared with the periprostatic block (0.23 vs 0.43, P = 0.042), they were equivalent at 6 h (0.16 vs 0.25, P = 0.389) and 24 h (0.10 vs 0.26, P = 0.184) respectively. For the change in vital signs during biopsy procedure, perineal nerve block was significantly superior to periprostatic block in terms of maximum value of systolic blood pressure, maximum value of mean arterial pressure and maximum value of heart rate. There are no statistical differences in average value of systolic blood pressure, average value of mean, average value of heart rate, diastolic blood pressure and breathing rate. Perineal nerve block was also superior to periprostatic block in external manifestations of pain (1.88 vs 3.00, P < 0.001) and anaesthesia satisfaction (8.93 vs 11.90, P < 0.001). The separation of lanthanides and actinides has attracted great attention in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing up to date. In addition, liquid-liquid extraction is a feasible and useful way to separate An(III) from Ln(III) based on their relative solubilities in two different immiscible liquids. The hydrophilic bipyridine- and phenanthroline-based nitrogen-chelating ligands show excellent performance in separation of Am(III) and Eu(III) as reported previously. To profoundly explore the separation mechanism, herein, we first of all designed four hydrophilic sulfonated and phosphorylated ligands L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , and L 4 based on the bipyridine and phenanthroline backbones. In addition, we studied the structures of these ligands and their neutral complexes [ML(NO 3 ) 3 ] (M = Am, Eu) as well as the thermodynamic properties of complexing reactions through the scalar relativistic density functional theory. According to the changes of the Gibbs free energy for the back-extraction reactions, the phenanthroline-based ligands L 2 and L 4 have stronger complexing capacity for both Am(III) and Eu(III) ions while the phosphorylated ligand L 3 with the bipyridine framework has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. In addition, the charge decomposition analysis revealed a higher degree of charge transfer from the ligand to Am(III), suggesting stronger donor-acceptor interactions in the Am(III) complexes. This study can provide theoretical insights into the separation of actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) using hydrophilic sulfonated and phosphorylated N-donor ligands.

Separation of trivalent actinides (An(III)) and lanthanides (Ln(III)) poses a huge challenge in the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel due to their similar chemical properties. N , N '-Diethyl- N , N '-ditolyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (Et-Tol-DAPhen) is a potential ligand for the extraction of An(III) from Ln(III), while there are still few reports on the effect of its substituent including electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on An(III)/Ln(III) separation. Herein, the interaction of Et-Tol-DAPhen ligands modified by the electron-withdrawing groups (CF 3 , Br) and electron-donating groups (OH) with Am(III)/Eu(III) ions was investigated using scalar relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The analyses of bond order, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and molecular orbital (MO) indicate that the substitution groups have a slight effect on the electronic structures of the [M( L-X )(NO 3 ) 3 ] (X = CF 3 , Br, OH) complexes. However, the thermodynamic results suggest that a ligand with the electron-donating group ( L-OH ) improves the extraction ability of metal ions, and the ligand modified by the electron-withdrawing group ( L-Br ) has the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. This work could render new insights into understanding the effect of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups in tuning the selectivity of Et-Tol-DAPhen derivatives and pave the way for designing new ligands modified by substituted groups with better extraction ability and An(III)/Ln(III) selectivity.

Similar to graphene and fullerene, metal-doping has been considered to be an effective approach to the construction of highly stable boron clusters. In this work, a series of actinide metal-doped boron clusters AnB 36 (An = Pa, Np, Pu, Am, Cm, Bk, and Cf) have been explored using extensive first-principles calculations. We found that the quasi-planar structure of B 36 transforms to an endohedral borospherene An@B 36 after actinide metal doping. Actinoborospherenes exhibit C 2h symmetry with Pa, Np, and Pu dopants and for Am, Cm, Bk and Cf dopants with larger atomic radii, the symmetry of An@B 36 is reduced to C i . Bonding property analyses such as bond order, molecular orbital (MO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis show that the covalency of the An-B bonds in C 2h An@B 36 (An = Pa, Np, and Pu) is higher than that in C i An@B 36 (An = Am, Cm, Bk, and Cf). These endohedral borospherenes are robust according to thermodynamic and dynamic analyses. As expected, the C i An@B 36 clusters are less stable compared to C 2h An@B 36 , which is consistent with the stronger covalent bonds of the latter. These results indicate that the existence of the actinide-boron bonding is essential for the high stability of the An@B 36 clusters, confirming that the fullerene-like boron cages can be stabilized by actinide encapsulation. This work is expected to provide potential routes for the construction of robust borospherenes.

Implementation of the kidney allocation system in 2014 greatly reduced access disparity due to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) sensitization. To address persistent disparity related to candidate ABO blood groups, herein we propose a novel metric termed "ABO-adjusted cPRA," which simultaneously considers the impact of candidate HLA and ABO sensitization on the same scale. An ethnic-weighted ABO-adjusted cPRA value was computed for 190 467 candidates on the kidney waitlist by combining candidate's conventional HLA cPRA with the remaining fraction of HLA-compatible donors that are ABO-incompatible. Consideration of ABO sensitization resulted in higher ABO-adjusted cPRA relative to conventional cPRA by HLA alone, except for AB candidates since they are not ABO-sensitized. Within cPRA Point Group = 99%, 43% of the candidates moved up to ABO-adjusted cPRA Point Group = 100%, though this proportion varied substantially by candidate blood group. Nearly all O and most B candidates would have elevated ABO-adjusted cPRA values above this policy threshold for allocation priority, but relatively few A candidates displayed this shift. Overall, ABO-adjusted cPRA more accurately measures the proportion of immune-compatible donors compared with conventional HLA cPRA, especially for highly sensitized candidates. The single antigen bead (SAB) assay is the most used test for the identification of HLA specific antibodies pre- and post-transplant. Nevertheless, detection of spurious reactivities remains a recognized assay limitation. In addition, the presence of weak reactivity patterns can complicate unacceptable antigen assignment. This work presents the evaluation of the adsorption with crossmatch cells and elution (AXE) technique, which was designed to help differentiate weak HLA specific antibodies targeting native antigens from spurious and background SAB assay reactivity. The AXE protocol uses selected donor cells to adsorb HLA specific antibodies from sera of interest. Bound antibodies are then eluted off washed cells and identified using the SAB assay. Only antibodies targeting native HLA are adsorbed. Assay evaluation was performed using five cell donors and pooled positive control serum. AXE efficiency was determined by comparing SAB reactivity of adsorbed/eluted antibody to that of the antibodies in unadsorbed sera. A robust efficiency was seen across a wide range of original MFI for donor specific antibodies (DSA). A higher absorption/elution recovery was observed for HLA class I antigens vs. class II. Locus-specific variation was also observed, with high-expression HLA loci (HLA-A/B/DR) providing the best recovery. Importantly, negligible reactivity was detected in the last wash control, confirming that AXE eluates were not contaminated with HLA antibody carry-over. Donor cells incubated with autologous and DSA-containing allogeneic sera showed that AXE selectively adsorbed HLA antibodies in a donor antigen-specific manner. Importantly, antibodies targeting denatured epitopes or other non-HLA antigens were not detected by AXE. AXE was particularly effective at distinguishing weak HLA antibodies from background reactivity. When combined with epitope analysis, AXE enhanced precise identification of antibody-targeted eplets and even facilitated the characterization of a potential novel eplet. Comparison of AXE to flow cytometric crossmatching further revealed that AXE was a more sensitive technique in the detection of weak DSA. Spurious reactivities on the current SAB assay have a deleterious impact on the assignment of clinically relevant HLA specificities. Separation of trivalent actinide (An(III)) and lanthanide (Ln(III)) is a worldwide challenge of nuclear waste treatment. Designing ligands with efficient An(III)/Ln(III) separation performance is still one of the key issues for the disposal of accumulated radioactive waste and the recovery of minor actinides. Recently, N-heterocyclic ligands modified with amide groups have shown excellent An(III)/Ln(III) separation performance. The preorganized structure of the ligands has a great impact on the An(III)/Ln(III) separation performance. We theoretically investigated the extraction behaviors of Am(III) and Eu(III) using phenanthroline (L1 and L2) and bipyridine (L3 and L4) based ligands with a completely or partially preorganized structure. The properties of these ligands and their coordination structures, bonding nature and thermodynamic behaviors with the Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes have been systematically studied in a theoretical fashion. The analyses of the bonding nature suggest that the Am-N bonds possess more covalence than the Eu-N bonds. The thermodynamic results indicate that L2 with a completely preorganized structure has the strongest extraction ability and the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, while L3 with the most flexible skeleton appears to have the weakest extraction ability and the lowest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. And L1 and L4 have similar performances with regard to Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. The results suggest that a certain degree of preorganization of the ligand structure can enhance the extraction ability and Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity. This work provides valuable information for designing efficient ligands for An(III)/Ln(III) separation by the preorganization strategy.

The bistriazinyl-phenanthroline representative ligand, BTPhen, shows excellent extraction and separation ability for trivalent actinides and lanthanides. Herein, we first designed three phenanthroline-based nitrogen-donor ligands (L 1 , L 2 , and L 3 ), and then studied the structural and bonding properties as well as thermodynamic properties of the probable complexes, ML(NO 3 ) 3 (M = Am or Eu and L = L 1 , L 2 , or L 3 ), using scalar relativistic density functional theory. Our charge decomposition analysis revealed an obviously higher charge transfer from the ligand to Am(III) compared with the Eu(III) case for the studied complexes. Spin density analysis further showed a more significant degree of Am-to-ligand spin delocalization and the corresponding spin polarization on the ligands. According to the thermodynamic analysis, ligand L 3 has the strongest complexation capacity for both Am(III) and Eu(III) ions, while ligand L 1 has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity in binary octanol/water solutions. We expected that this work can provide valuable theoretical support for the design of effective ligands for actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) separation in high level liquid waste.

Rationale & Objective: In 2014 the wait-time calculation for deceased donor kidney transplantation in the United States was changed from the date of first waitlisting to the date of first maintenance dialysis treatment with the aim of minimizing disparities in access to transplantation. This study examined the impact of this policy on access to transplantation, patient survival, and transplant outcomes among patients treated with maintenance dialysis for a prolonged duration before waitlisting., Study Design: Retrospective cohort study., Setting & Participants: Patients identified in the US Renal Data System between 2008 and 2018 aged 18-70 years and in the 95th percentile of dialysis treatment duration (≥6.5 years) before waitlisting., Exposure: Waitlisting for transplantation before versus after implementation of the policy., Outcome: Time from date of waitlisting to deceased donor transplantation and death, and from date of transplantation to all cause graft loss., Analytical Approach: Univariate and multivariable time to event analyses., Results: Patients waitlisted after the policy change had a higher likelihood of deceased donor transplantation (HR, 3.12 [95% CI, 2.90-3.37]) and lower risk of death (HR, 0.74 [95% CI, 0.63-0.87]). The risk of graft loss was lower in the post-kidney allocation system (KAS) cohort (HR, 0.66 [95% CI, 0.55-0.80]). The proportion of adult patients treated with dialysis ≥6.5 years who were never waitlisted for transplantation remained high (73%) and did not decrease after the policy implementation., Limitations: Cannot determine causality in this observational study., Conclusions: The policy change was associated with an increase in deceased donor transplantation and marked improvement in patient survival for patients waitlisted after long periods of dialysis treatment without decreasing the utility of available deceased donor kidney supply. The competition of uranium and vanadium ions is a major challenge in extracting uranium from seawater. In-depth exploration of the complexation of uranium and vanadium ions with promising ligands is essential to design highly efficient ligands for selective recovery of uranium. In this work, we systematically explored the uranyl and vanadium extraction complexes with three tetradentate N,O-mixed donor analogues including the rigid backbone ligands 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid (PDA, L 1 ) and 5 H -cyclopenta[2,1- b :3,4- b ']dipyridine-2,8-dicarboxylate acid (L 3 ), as well as the flexible ligand [2,2'-bipyridine]-6,6'-dicarboxylate acid (L 2 ) using density functional theory (DFT). These ligands coordinate to the uranyl cation in a tetradentate fashion, while L 1 and L 3 act as tridentate ligands toward VO 2 + due to the smaller ionic radius of VO 2 + and larger cleft sizes of L 1 and L 3 . Bonding analyses show that the metal-ligand bonding orbitals of the uranyl complexes [UO 2 L(CO 3 )] 2- , [UO 2 L(OH)] - , and [UO 2 L(H 2 O)] mainly arise from the interactions of the U 5f, 6d orbitals and N, O 2p orbitals. Because of the rigid structure and more suitable chelate ring size, the L 1 ligand possesses a stronger complexing ability for uranyl ions than other ligands, while the L 3 ligand has weaker binding affinity than L 1 and L 2 . All these ligands prefer to coordinate with the uranyl cation rather than vanadium ion, indicating the selectivity of these ligands to [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4- over H 2 VO 4 - and HVO 4 2- in seawater. This is mainly attributed to the metal ion size-based selectivity and structural preorganization of the ligands. These results demonstrate that the backbone of these ligands affect their extraction behaviors. It is expected that this work might prove useful in designing efficient ligands for uranium extraction from seawater.

Effectively adjusting and controlling the valence state of neptunium (Np) is essential in its separation during spent fuel reprocessing. Hydrazine and its derivatives as free-salts can selectively reduce Np(VI) to Np(V). Reduction mechanisms of Np(VI) with hydrazine and four derivatives have been explored using multiple theoretical methods in our previous works. Herein, we examine the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) with hydrazinopropionitrile (NCCH 2 N 2 H 3 ) which exhibits faster kinetics than most other hydrazine derivatives probably due to its σ-π hyperconjugation effect. Free radical ion pathways I, II and III involving the three types of hydrazine H atoms were found that correspond to the experimentally established mechanism of reduction of two Np(VI) via initial oxidation to [NCCH 2 N 2 H 3 ] + ˙, followed by conversion to NCCH 2 N 2 H (+2H 3 O + ) and ultimately to CH 3 CN + N 2 . Potential energy profiles suggest that the second redox stage is rate-determining for all three pathways. Pathway I with water-mediated proton transfer is energetically preferred for hydrazinopropionitrile. Analyses using the approaches of localized molecular orbitals (LMOs), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) elucidate the bonding evolution for the structures on the reaction pathways. The results of the spin density reveal that the reduction of the first Np(VI) ion is the outer-sphere electron transfer, while that of the second Np(VI) ion is the hydrogen transfer. This work offers new insights into the nature of reduction of Np(VI) by hydrazinopropionitrile via water-mediated proton transfer, and provides a basis for designing free-salt reductants for Np separations.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) always runs in the forefront of the global burden when it comes to infectious diseases. Tuberculosis, which can lead to impairment of quality of life, financial hardship, discrimination, marginalization, and social barriers, is a major public health problem. The assessment of TB burden and trend can provide crucial information for policy decision and planning, and help countries in the world to achieve the goal of sustainable development of ending the epidemic of TB in 2030., Methods: All data are from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD 2019) database, which analyzed the burden trend of age-standardized incidence, DALYs, and deaths rate in TB and HIV/AIDS-infected TB over the past 30 years. Also, GBD 2019 not only analyzed the burden distribution of TB in 204 countries and main regions of the world but also analyzed the relationship between the burden of global TB and the socio-demographic Index (SDI)., Results: The age-standardized incidence, age-standardized disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and age-standardized deaths rate for HIV-negative TB were 10,671.45 (9,395.60-12,194.10), 59,042.45 (53,684.78-64,641.53), and 1,463.62 (1,339.24-1,602.71) (95% CI, per 100,000 person-years) in 2019, respectively. Age-standardized incidence, age-standardized DALYs, and age-standardized deaths rate of HIV/AIDS-XDR-TB (95% CI, per 1,000 person-years) were 2.10 (1.51-2.90), 64.23 (28.64-117.74), and 1.01 (0.42-1.86), respectively. We found that TB is inversely proportional to SDI, the age-standardized incidence, DALYs, and deaths rate low burden countries were in high SDI areas, while high burden countries were in low SDI areas. The global TB showed a slow decline trend, but the age-standardized incidence of HIV-positive TB was increasing, and mainly distributed in sub-Saharan Africa., Conclusion: Age-standardized incidence, age-standardized DALYs, and age-standardized deaths rate of TB is related to SDI, and the burden of low SDI countries is lighter than that of high SDI countries. Without effective measures, it will be difficult for countries around the world to achieve the goal of ending the TB epidemic by 2030. Metal doping has been considered to be an effective approach to stabilize various boron clusters. In this work, we constructed a series of largest metal-centered double-ring tubular boron clusters An@B 24 (An = Th, Pa, Pu, and Am). Extensive global minimum structural searches combined with density functional theory predicted that the global minima of An@B 24 (An = Th, Pu, and Am) are double-ring tubular structures. Formation energy analysis indicates that these boron clusters are highly stable, especially for Th@B 24 and Pa@B 24 . Detailed bonding analysis shows that the significant stability of An@B 24 is determined by the covalent character of the An-B bonding, which stems from the interactions of An 5f and 6d orbitals and B 2p orbitals. These results show that actinide metal doping is a feasible route to construct stable large metal-centered double-ring tubular boron clusters, offering the possibility to design boron nanomaterials with special physiochemical properties.

Designing ligands with efficient actinide (An(III))/lanthanide (Ln(III)) separation performance is still one of the key issues for the disposal of accumulated radioactive waste and the recovery of minor actinides. Recently, the hydrophilic ligands as promising extractants in the innovative Selective ActiNide Extraction (i-SANEX) process show excellent selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III), such as hydroxylated-based ligands. In this work, we investigated the selective back-extraction toward Am(III) over Eu(III) with three hydrophilic hydroxylated triazolyl-based ligands (the skeleton of pyridine L a , bipyridine L b , and phenanthroline L c ) using scalar-relativistic density functional theory. The properties of three hydrophilic hydroxylated ligands and the coordination structures, bonding nature, and thermodynamic properties of the Am(III) and Eu(III) complexes with three ligands have been evaluated using multiple theoretical methods. The results of molecular orbitals (MOs), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIMs), and natural bond orbital (NBO) reveal that Am-N bonds possess more covalent character compared to Eu-N bonds. The thermodynamic results indicate that the complexing ability of L b and L c with metal ions is almost the same, which is stronger than that of L a . However, L a has the best Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity among three ligands, which is attributed to the largest difference in covalency between Am-N trzl and Eu-N trzl bonds in M L a (NO 3 ) 3 . This work provides an in-depth understanding of the preferential selectivity of the hydrophilic hydroxylated ligands with An(III) over Ln(III) and also provides theoretical support for designing potential hydrophilic ligands with excellent separation performance of Am(III)/Eu(III).

TIFY proteins play crucial roles in plant abiotic and biotic stress responses. Our transcriptome data revealed several TIFY family genes with significantly upregulated expression under drought, salt, and ABA treatments. However, the functions of the GmTIFY family genes are still unknown in abiotic stresses. We identified 38 GmTIFY genes and found that TIFY10 homologous genes have the most duplication events, higher selection pressure, and more obvious response to abiotic stresses compared with other homologous genes. Expression pattern analysis showed that GmTIFY10e and GmTIFY10g genes were significantly induced by salt stress. Under salt stress, GmTIFY10e and GmTIFY10g transgenic Arabidopsis plants showed higher root lengths and fresh weights and had significantly better growth than the wild type (WT). In addition, overexpression of GmTIFY10e and GmTIFY10g genes in soybean improved salt tolerance by increasing the PRO, POD, and CAT contents and decreasing the MDA content; on the contrary, RNA interference plants showed sensitivity to salt stress. Overexpression of GmTIFY10e and GmTIFY10g in Arabidopsis and soybean could improve the salt tolerance of plants, while the RNAi of GmTIFY10e and GmTIFY10g significantly increased sensitivity to salt stress in soybean. Further analysis demonstrated that GmTIFY10e and GmTIFY10g genes changed the expression levels of genes related to the ABA signal pathway, including GmSnRK2 , GmPP2C , GmMYC2 , GmCAT1 , and GmPOD . Effective separation and recovery of chemically similar transplutonium elements from adjacent actinides is extremely challenging in spent fuel reprocessing. Deep comprehension of the complexation of transplutonium elements and ligands is significant for the design and development of ligands for the in-group separation of transplutonium elements. Because of experimental difficulties of transplutonium elements, theoretical calculation has become an effective means of exploring transplutonium complexes. In this work, we systematically investigated the coordination mechanism between transplutonium elements (An = Am, Cm, Bk, Cf) and two crown ether macrocyclic ligands [ N , N '- bis[(6-carboxy-2-pyridyl)methyl]-1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 (H 2 bp18c6) and N , N '-bis[(6-methylphosphinic-2-pyridyl)methyl]-1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 (H 2 bpp18c6)] through quasi-relativistic density functional theory. The extraction complexes of [Anbp18c6] + and [Anbpp18c6] + possess similar geometrical structures with actinide atoms located in the cavity of the ligands. Bonding nature analysis indicates that the coordination ability of the coordinating atoms in pendent arms is stronger than that in the crown ether macrocycle because of the limitation of the macrocycle. Most of the coordination atoms of the H 2 bp18c6 ligand have a stronger ability to coordinate with metal ions than those of the H 2 bpp18c6 ligand. In addition, the bonding strength between the metal ions and ligands gradually weakens from Am to Cf, which is mainly attributed to the size selectivity of the ligands. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the H 2 bp18c6 ligand has a stronger extraction capacity than the H 2 bpp18c6 ligand, while the H 2 bpp18c6 ligand is superior in terms of the in-group separation ability. The extraction capacity of the two ligands for metal ions gradually decreases across the actinide series, indicating that these crown ether macrocycle ligands have size selectivity for these actinide cations as a result of steric constraint of the crown ether ring. We hope that these results offer theoretical clues for the development of macrocycle ligands for in-group transplutonium separation.

Background and Objectives: The optimal induction treatment in low-immune risk kidney transplant recipients is uncertain. We therefore investigated the use and outcomes of induction immunosuppression in a low-risk cohort of patients who were well matched with their donor at HLA-A, -B, -DR, -DQB1 on the basis of serologic typing., Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: Our study was an observational study of first adult kidney-only transplant recipients in the United States recorded by the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network., Results: Among 2976 recipients, 57% were treated with T cell-depleting antibodies, 28% were treated with an IL-2 receptor antagonist, and 15% were treated without induction. There was no difference in allograft survival, death-censored graft survival, or death with function between patients treated with an IL-2 receptor antagonist and no induction therapy. In multivariable models, patients treated with T cell-depleting therapy had a similar risk of graft loss from any cause, including death (hazard ratio, 1.19; 95% confidence interval, 0.98 to 1.45), compared with patients treated with an IL-2 receptor antagonist or no induction. The findings were consistent in subgroup analyses of Black recipients, patients grouped by calculated panel reactive antibody, and donor source. The incidence of acute rejection at 1 year was low (≤5%) and did not vary between treatment groups., Conclusions: Use of induction therapy with T cell-depleting therapy or IL-2 receptor antagonists in first kidney transplant recipients who are well matched with their donor at the HLA-A, -B, -DR, -DQB1 gene loci is not associated with improved post-transplant outcomes., (Copyright © 2022 by the American Society of Nephrology.)

Extraction of uranium from seawater is one of the important ways to solve the shortage of terrestrial uranium resources. Thereinto, the competition between uranyl and vanadium cations is a significant challenge in the commonly used amidoxime-based adsorbents for extracting uranium from seawater. An in-depth understanding of the extraction behaviors of modified amidoxime groups with uranyl and vanadium ions is one of the effective means to design and develop efficient adsorbents for selective uranium sequestration. In this work, we have designed and systematically investigated the alkyl and amino functionalized amidoxime, ( Z )-2-amino- N' -hydroxy- N,N -dimethylbenzimidamide (L 1 ), and its phenyl and methoxy derivatives (( Z )-3-amino- N' -hydroxy- N,N -dimethyl-2-naphthimidamide (L 2 ) and ( Z )-2-amino- N '-hydroxy-4-methoxy- N,N -dimethylbenzimidamide (L 3 )) by quantum chemistry calculations. In the uranyl complexes, the amidoxime groups prefer to act as η 2 -coordinated ligands as the amidoximes increase, and there exist substantial hydrogen bond interactions, which are different from the vanadium complexes. Various bonding analyses show that the L 1 ligand possesses a stronger binding affinity to UO 2 2+ , and the -C 6 H 5 and -CH 3 O substituent groups seem to have no effect on the improvement of extraction ability. Thermodynamic analysis confirms that the L 1 ligand has a stronger extraction capability to uranyl ion compared to L 2 and L 3 . According to the calculations of the vanadium (V) (VO 2 + and VO 3+ ) complexes with the L 1 ligand, L 1 is more likely to react with [H 2 VO 4 ] - and [HVO 4 ] 2- to form VO 2 + complexes. Expectantly, thermodynamic analysis displays a higher extraction capacity for uranyl ions than vanadium ions. Therefore, these alkyl and amino functionalized amidoxime ligands demonstrate high selectivity for uranyl over vanadium ions, which is mainly due to the coordination mode changes of these ligands toward vanadium in conjunction with the considerable hydrogen bonds in the uranyl complexes. These results are expected to afford useful clues for the design of efficient adsorbents for uranium extraction from seawater.

Calmodulin-binding protein 60 (CBP60) members constitute a plant-specific protein family that plays an important role in plant growth and development. In the soybean genome, nineteen CBP60 members were identified and analyzed for their corresponding sequences and structures to explore their functions. Among GmCBP60A-1, which primarily locates in the cytomembrane, was significantly induced by drought and salt stresses. The overexpression of GmCBP60A-1 enhanced drought and salt tolerance in Arabidopsis , which showed better state in the germination of seeds and the root growth of seedlings. In the soybean hairy roots experiment, the overexpression of GmCBP60A-1 increased proline content, lowered water loss rate and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, all of which likely enhanced the drought and salt tolerance of soybean seedlings. Under stress conditions, drought and salt response-related genes showed significant differences in expression in hairy root soybean plants of GmCBP60A-1 -overexpressing and hairy root soybean plants of RNAi. The present study identified GmCBP60A-1 as an important gene in response to salt and drought stresses based on the functional analysis of this gene and its potential underlying mechanisms in soybean stress-tolerance.

The exploration of metal-doped boron clusters has a great significance in the design of high coordination number (CN) compounds. Actinide-doped boron clusters are probable candidates for achieving high CNs. In this work, we systematically explored a series of actinide metal atom (U, Np, and Pu) doped B 20 boron clusters An@B 20 (An = U, Np, and Pu) by global minimum structural searches and density functional theory (DFT). Each An@B 20 cluster is confirmed to be a twenty-coordinate complex, which is the highest CN obtained in the chemistry of actinide-doped boron clusters so far. The predicted global minima of An@B 20 are tubular structures with actinide atoms as centers, which can be considered as boron molecular drums. In An@B 20 , U@B 20 has a relatively high symmetry of C 2 , while both Np@B 20 and Pu@B 20 exhibit C 1 symmetry. Extensive bonding analysis demonstrates that An@B 20 has σ and π delocalized bonding, and the U-B bonds possess a relatively higher covalency than the Np-B and Pu-B bonds, resulting in the higher formation energy of U@B 20 . Therefore, the covalent character of An-B bonding may be crucial for the formation of these high CN actinide-centered boron clusters. These results deepen our understanding of actinide metal doped boron clusters and provide new clues for developing stable high CN boron-based nanomaterials.

Efficient separation of neptunium and plutonium from spent nuclear fuel is essential for advanced nuclear fuel cycles. At present, the development of effective actinide separation ligands has become a top priority. As common adsorbents for extracting uranium from seawater, amidoxime-based adsorbents may also be able to separate actinides from high-level liquid waste (HLLW). In this work, the complexation of Np(IV,V,VI) and Pu(IV) and alkyl chains (R = C 13 H 26 ) modified with amidoximate (AO - ) and carboxyl (Ac - ) functional groups was systematically studied by quantum chemical calculations. For all the studied complexing species, the RAc - and RAO - ligands act as monodentate or bidentate ligands. Complexes with AO - groups show higher covalency of the metal-ligand bonding than the analogues with Ac - groups, in line with the binding energy analysis. Bonding analysis verifies that these amidoxime/carboxyl-based adsorbents possess higher coordination affinity toward Pu(IV) than toward Np(IV), and the Np(VI) complexes have stronger covalent interactions than Np(V). According to thermodynamic analysis, these adsorbents have the ability to separate Np(IV,V,VI) and Pu(IV), and also exhibit potential performance for partitioning Pu(IV) from Np(IV) under acidic conditions. This work can help to deeply understand the interaction between transuranium elements and amidoxime-based adsorbents, and provide a theoretical basis for the separation of actinides with amidoxime-based adsorbents.

In this work, we focused on the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) with four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands ( L ) based on the framework of phenanthroline and bipyridine through scalar relativistic density functional theory. We studied the electronic structures of [M L (NO 3 ) 3 ] (M = Am, Eu) complexes and the bonding nature between metal and ligands as well as evaluated the separation selectivity of Am(III)/Eu(III). The tetrasulfonated ligand L 2 with a bipyridine framework has the strongest complexing ability for metal ions probably because of the better solubility and flexible skeleton. The disulfonated ligand L 1 has the highest Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity, which is attributed to the covalent difference between the Am-N and Eu-N bonds based on the quantum theory of atoms in the molecule analysis. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the four hydrophilic sulfonated ligands are more selective toward Am(III) over Eu(III). In addition, these hydrophilic sulfonated ligands show better complexing ability and Am(III)/Eu(III) selectivity compared to the corresponding hydrophobic nonsulfonated ones. This work provides theoretical support for the separation of Am(III)/Eu(III) using hydrophilic sulfonated ligands.

Effectively adjusting and controlling the valence state of neptunium from the spent fuel reprocessing process is essential to separating neptunium. Hydrazine and its derivatives as free-salt reductants have been experimentally demonstrated to effectively reduce Np(VI) to Np(V). We have theoretically investigated the reduction mechanisms of Np(VI) with hydrazine and three derivatives (HOC 2 H 4 N 2 H 3 , CH 3 N 2 H 3 , and CHON 2 H 3 ) in previous works. Herein, we further explored the reduction reaction of Np(VI) with phenylhydrazine (C 6 H 5 N 2 H 3 ) including the free radical ion mechanism and the free radical mechanism. Potential energy profiles (PEPs) indicate that the rate-determining step of both mechanisms is the first stage. Moreover, for the free radical ion mechanism, phenylhydrazine possesses better reduction ability to Np(VI) compared to HOC 2 H 4 N 2 H 3 , CH 3 N 2 H 3 , and CHON 2 H 3 , which falls completely in line with the experimental results. Additionally, the analyses of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), natural bond orbitals (NBOs), electron localization function (ELF), and localized molecular orbitals (LMOs) have been put forward to elucidate the bonding evolution for the structures of the reaction pathways. This work offers insights into the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) with phenylhydrazine from the theory point of view and contributes to design more high-efficiency reductants for the separation of U/Np and Np/Pu in spent fuel reprocessing.

In the process of spent fuel reprocessing, it is highly difficult to extract transplutonium elements from adjacent actinides. A deep understanding of the electronic structure of transplutonium complexes is essential for development of steady ligands for in-group separation of transplutonium actinides. In this work, we have systematically explored the potential in-group separation ability of transplutonium elements of typical quadridentate N-donor ligands (phenanthroline-derived bis-triazine, BTPhen derivatives) through quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT). Our calculations demonstrate that ligands with electron-donating groups have stronger coordination abilities, and the substitutions of Br and phenol at the 4-position of the 1,10-phenanthroline have a higher effect on the ligand than those at the 5-position. Bonding analysis indicates that the covalent interaction of An 3+ complexes becomes stronger from Am to Cf apart from Cm, which is because the energy of the 5f orbital gradually decreases and becomes energy-degenerate with the 2p orbitals of ligands. The most negative values of binding energies indicate the higher stability of Cf 3+ complexes, in line with the larger covalency in the Cf-L bonds compared with An-L (An = Am, Cm, Bk). In addition, electron-donating group phenol can enhance the covalent interaction between ligands and heavy actinides. Consequently, the extraction ability of ligands with electron-donating substituents for heavy actinides is generally stronger than other ligands. Nevertheless, these ligands exhibit diverse separation abilities to in-group actinide recovery. Therefore, the enhancement of covalency does not necessarily lead to the improvement of separation ability, which may be caused by different extraction abilities. Compared with the tetradentate N, O-donor ligands (2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthrolinel, DAPhen derivatives), species with BTPhen ligands display stronger covalent interaction and higher extraction capacity. In terms of in-group separation ability, the BTPhen ligands seem to have advantages in separation of californium from curium, while the DAPhen ligands possess stronger abilities to separate americium from curium. These results may afford some afflatus for the development of effective agents for in-group separation of transplutonium elements.

Mutual separation of trivalent americium (Am3+) and curium (Cm3+) ions through liquid-liquid extraction is challenging due to the similarity in their chemical properties. Three N, O combined extractants 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid di(N-ethyl-4-fluoroanilide) (Et(pFPh)DPA), diphenyl(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (Ph2PyPO), and alkyldiamide amine with 2-ethylhexylalkyl chains (ADAAM(EH)) have been identified to exhibit selectivity for Am3+ over Cm3+. In this work, the structures, bonding nature, and thermodynamic behaviors of a series of representative Am- and Cm-complexes with these ligands have been systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on our calculations, the ONO angle formed by three donor atoms of the ligand in the Am-complex is slightly larger than that in its Cm-analogue. The studied ligands show their preference toward Am3+ by opening their "mouths" slightly wider. According to the Mayer bond order and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses, the interactions between the O donor atoms of these ligands and Am3+ and Cm3+ ions show some weak partial covalent character, and compared to the Am-O bond, there is relatively more covalency in the Cm-O bond in the corresponding complex. However, opposite results can be found in the Am-N and Cm-N bonding for the first two ligands. Particularly, for the better separation ligand ADAAM(EH), the Am-N and Cm-N interactions are extremely weak and no covalent character exists in the bonding. Nevertheless, the difference between the very weak Am-N and Cm-N interactions still leads to a better performance of ADAAM(EH). Based on the comparison of these ligands, we can find that weakening the binding ability of N atoms in the ligand may increase the difference between the Am-N and Cm-N interactions, thus enhancing the Am3+/Cm3+ separation ability of the ligand. Our study might provide new insights into understanding the selectivity of these three N, O combined ligands toward minor actinides and pave the way for designing efficient Am3+/Cm3+ extraction and separation ligands.

Background and Objectives: Panel reactive antibody informs the likelihood of finding an HLA-compatible donor for transplant candidates, but has historically been associated with acute rejection and allograft survival because testing methods could not exclude the presence of concomitant donor-specific antibodies. Despite new methods to exclude donor-specific antibodies, panel reactive antibody continues to be used to determine the choice of induction and maintenance immunosuppression. The study objective was to determine the clinical relevance of panel reactive antibody in the absence of donor-specific antibodies., Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: Retrospective observational study of kidney allograft survival among 4058 zero HLA-A-, B-, DR-, and DQB1-mismatched transplant recipients without antibodies to donor kidney antigens encoded by these HLA gene loci., Results: Among 4058 first and repeat transplant recipients, patients with calculated panel reactive antibody (cPRA) 1%-97% were not at higher risk of transplant failure, compared with patients with cPRA of 0% (death censored graft loss: hazard ratio, 1.07; 95% confidence interval, 0.82 to 1.41). Patients with cPRA ≥98% had a higher risk of graft loss from any cause including death (hazard ratio, 1.39; 95% confidence interval, 1.08 to 1.79) and death censored allograft failure (hazard ratio, 1.78; 95% confidence interval, 1.27 to 2.49). In stratified analyses, the higher risk of graft loss among patients with cPRA ≥98% was only observed among repeat, but not first, transplant recipients. To evaluate how halogen and actinide atoms affect the electronic structures and bonding nature, we have theoretically investigated a series of the actinide halides An(TRENTIPS)X (An = Th-Pu; X = F-I); several of them have been synthesized by Liddle's group. The An-X bond distances decrease from An = Th to Pu for the same halides, and the harmonic vibrational frequencies for the An-X bonds are more susceptible to being affected by the halogen atoms. The analyses of bonding nature reveal that the An-X bonds have a certain covalency with a polarized character, and the σ-bonding component in the total orbital contribution is greatly larger than the corresponding π-bonding ones based on the analysis of the NOCVs (the natural orbitals for chemical valence). Furthermore, the electronic structures of the thorium complexes are obviously different from those of the uranium and transuranic analogues due to more valence electrons in Th 6d orbitals. In addition, thermodynamic results suggest that the U(TRENTIPS)Br complex is the most stable and U(TRENTIPS)Cl has the highest reactivity based on the halide exchange reaction of U(TRENTIPS)X complexes using Me3SiX. The reduction ability of the tetravalent An(TRENTIPS)X is sensitive to halogen atoms according to the calculated electron affinity of the An(TRENTIPS)X and the reactions An(TRENTIPS)X + K → An(TRENTIPS) + KX. This work presents the effect of the halogen and the actinide atoms on the structures, bonding nature and redox ability of a series of the tetravalent actinide halides with TREN ligand and facilitates our in-depth understanding of f-block elements, which could provide theoretical guidance for experimental work on actinide halides, especially for the synthetic chemistry of transuranic halides.

Herein we present a new viologen-based radical-containing metal-organic framework (RMOF) Gd-IHEP-7, which upon heating in air undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation to generate Gd-IHEP-8. Both RMOFs exhibit excellent air and water stability as a result of favorable radical-radical interactions, and their long-lifetime radicals result in wide spectral absorption in the range 200-2500 nm. Gd-IHEP-7 and Gd-IHEP-8 show excellent activity toward solar-driven nitrogen fixation, with ammonia production rates of 128 and 220 μmol h -1  g -1 , respectively. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that both RMOFs have similar nitrogen fixation pathways. The enhanced catalytic efficiency of Gd-IHEP-8 versus Gd-IHEP-7 is attributed to intermediates stabilized by enhanced hydrogen bonding., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)
