The objectives of the present study were to determine the concentrations of heavy metals and metalloids in water, sediment and Osteochilus vittatus fish, and to assess chromosome aberrations, serum biochemical changes and histopathological alterations in O. vittatus from the Nam Kok river near the Sepon gold-copper mine, Lao People&rsquo, s Democratic Republic compared with the reference area. The results showed that Fe, Mn and Ni in water, As and Cd in sediment as well as As, Cd, Cr, Mn and Ni in O. vittatus muscle samples near the gold-copper mine exceeded standard values. Furthermore, the chromosome assessment in O. vittatus revealed seven types of chromosome aberrations, and the highest total number of chromosome aberrations was a centromere gap. The total number of chromosome aberrations, cell number with chromosome aberrations and percentage of chromosome aberrations in O. vittatus as well as serum liver enzymes between the studied areas were significantly different (p &lt, 0.05). The liver histopathological alterations of the fish near the gold-copper mine revealed atypical cellular structures as nuclear membrane degeneration, rough endoplasmic reticulum disintegration and abnormal cytoplasmic mitochondria. The results of this study suggested that heavy metal and metalloid contaminations from the Sepon gold-copper mine area negatively affect O. vittatus fish in terms of chromosomal defects, serum biochemical changes and liver histopathological appearances.

This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of Cr, Cd and Pb in the water, sediment and experimental hybrid catfish muscles, and to compare the genetic differentiation and the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl) between the catfish from the contaminated reservoir near a municipal landfill and the reference area after chronic exposure. The concentrations of all metals in the water and the concentration of Cd in the sediment exceeded Thailand&rsquo, s surface water quality and soil quality standards, respectively, whereas the concentrations of these metals in fish muscles did not exceed Thailand&rsquo, s food quality standards. Dendrogram results in terms of genetic similarity values of the catfish from the reference and the landfill areas were 0.90 to 0.96 and 0.79 to 0.86, respectively, implying that the genetic differentiation of the fish from the landfill was greater than of those from the reference area. The fish in the landfill reservoir had slightly increased protein carbonyl levels. The results indicate that chronic heavy metal exposure can cause genotoxicity of the hybrid catfish and induce protein carbonyl as an oxidative stress biomarker in the reservoir near a municipal landfill.

This study aimed to investigate contamination by heavy metals including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), and manganese (Mn) and to conduct a cytotoxic assessment of Esomus metallicus from a gold mine area compared with that from the non-affected area. This study aimed to determine toxic element concentrations in aquatic environments, including water and sediment, and in the Hampala macrolepidota fish, and to evaluate chromosome abnormalities, serum liver enzyme changes and liver histopathological alterations in H. macrolepidota from the Nam Kok River near the Sepon gold–copper mine, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, as compared with a control area without mining activity. The results revealed significant differences (p &lt, 0.05) in As, Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Se and Zn in water, in all of the studied potentially toxic elements in sediment, and in As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Se, and Zn in the fish between the study and control areas. A chromosome assessment demonstrated 6 types of chromosome abnormalities, among which centric gap had the highest total number of chromosome abnormalities. Percentage of chromosome abnormalities, percentage of cells with chromosome abnormalities and serum liver enzymes in H. macrolepidota were significantly different (p &lt, 0.05) between the two studied areas and were higher in the contaminated fish than in the control fish. The observation of liver histopathological changes revealed cellular degeneration, such as nuclear damage, abnormal cytoplasmic mitochondria and the disintegration of rough endoplasmic reticulum. The results indicate that the contamination of potentially toxic elements in the Nam Kok River near the Sepon gold–copper mine area negatively affected chromosomes, serum liver enzymes and liver cell structures in H. macrolepidota.

This study was conducted to assess the water quality and arsenic (As) concentrations in water, sediment, aquatic plants and animals near a municipal landfill. The As concentration in the samples was analysed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Thirty-six aquatic plants of four species were collected. The highest As concentration was found in Limnocharis flava (0.78 ± 0.31 mg/kg). The aquatic animals included 31 fish of four species and 27 freshwater snails of three species. The highest As concentrations in the fish and freshwater snails were found in Oreochromis niloticus (0.16 ± 0.16 mg/kg) and Filopaludina sumatrensis (0.18 ± 0.06 mg/kg), respectively. The highest bioaccumulation factor of As in the aquatic plants, fish and freshwater snails were found in L. flava (131.30 ± 15.35), O. niloticus (228.21 ± 26.99) and F. sumatrensis (33.04 ± 10.58), respectively. This study aims to determine the heavy metals concentrations in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, correlates with genetic differentiation in a fish cultured farm and a stabilization pond. The heavy metals including cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) concentrations were analyzed using induction coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Genetic differentiation was studied by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) with dendrogram construction and analysis of genetic similarity (S). The results showed that the Cr and Pb concentrations in O. niloticus samples ranged from not detected to 0.025 ± 0.001 and not detected to 0.050 ± 0.002 mg/kg, in a fish cultured farm and a stabilization pond, respectively. The Cd concentrations not detected in all fish samples. RAPD was successfully applied to produce 877 total bands used for dendrogram construction and analysis of S. The dendrogram separated O. niloticus into two clusters corresponding to their studied area. The group of O. niloticus sample correlated with Cr and Pb concentrations. The Cr and Pb concentration in O. niloticus was low, it may still affect the genetic differentiation of fish. The genetic differentiation values within the individual fish samples ranged from 0.167 to 0.251 for samples from the fish cultured farm and 0.148–0.207 for samples from the stabilization pond. The genetic differentiation values of each individual fish sample ranged from 0.148 to 0.355. The genetic differentiation may be due to changes in the environment and genetic inheritance from parents of the fish in each sample.

This research was conducted to assess the contamination of heavy metals in the water, sediment, aquatic plants and animals around a municipal landfill. To improve bioremediation of arsenic (As) contamination in soil, the use of microorganisms to efficiently reduce As and their assessment of genetic erosion by DNA damage using genomic template stability (GTS) evaluation and using RAPD markers were investigated. The five sites examined for microorganisms and contaminated soils were collected from affected gold mining areas. The highest As concentration in gold mining soil is 0.72 mg/kg. Microorganism strains isolated from the gold mining soil samples were tested for As removal capacity. Two bacterial isolates were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and morphological characteristics as Brevibacillus reuszeri and Rhodococcus sp. The ability to treat As in nutrient agar (NA) at 1,600 mg/L and contaminated soil samples at 0.72 mg/kg was measured at 168 h, revealing more efficient As removal by B. reuszeri than Rhodococcus sp. (96.67% and 94.17%, respectively). Both species have the capacity to remove As, but B. reuszeri shows improved growth compared to the Rhodococcus sp. B. reuszeri might be suitable for adaptation and use in As treatment. The results are in agreement with their genetic erosion values, with B. reuszeri showing very little genetic erosion (12.46%) of culture in As concentrations as high as 1,600 mg/L, whereas 82.54% genetic erosion occurred in the Rhodococcus sp., suggesting that Rhodococcus sp. would not survive at this level of genetic erosion. Therefore, B. reuszeri has a high efficiency and can be used for soil As treatment, as it is capable to tolerate a concentration of 0.72 mg/kg and as high as 1,600 mg/L in NA.

This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to determine the blood levels of zinc (B-Zn), chromium (B-Cr), and lead (B-Pb) and to identify the factors influencing these levels in the blood of residents of the Nam Pong River. Quantitative data collection was utilized, and systematic random sampling was conducted to obtain 420 samples for measuring serum heavy metals, including B-Zn, B-Cr, and B-Pb. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify factors influencing the accumulation of heavy metals in the population, reported mean differences, 95% confidence intervals, and p values. The average levels of heavy metals were 74.38 ± 14.00 µg/dL (95% confidence interval [CI]: 73.03–75.72) for zinc, 0.28 ± 0.23 µg/L (95% CI: 0.26–0.30) for chromium, and 2.80 ± 1.60 µg/dL (95% CI: 2.64–2.95) for lead, which all were within normal limits. The objectives of this study were to investigate chromosomal aberrations in rice field frogs (Fejervarya limnocharis) from gold mine area compared to those from non-affected area. Three frogs were collected from each site, and chromosomal aberrations were studied in their bone marrow. Arsenic (As) was also measured in water and sediment from both areas. The average As concentrations in samples from the gold mine and the non-affected areas were 0.03 ± 0.003 mg/L and not detected in water and 351.59 ± 5.73 and 1.37 ± 1.07 mg/kg in sediment, respectively. The values in the gold mine were still higher than that allowed by the water and soil quality standards; however, the As concentrations in the samples from the non-affected area were acceptable. The average concentrations of As in the frog samples from the gold mine and the non-affected areas were 0.35 ± 0.33 and 0.07 ± 0.01 mg/kg, respectively, which were both lower than the standard of As contamination in food. The diploid chromosome number of frogs in both areas was 2n = 26, and the percentage of chromosomal aberrations in rice field frogs in the gold mine area was higher than in the non-affected area. The objectives of this study were to investigate cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) concentrations in water and sediment as well as the muscle, gill, and liver of snakehead fish (Channa striata) and to reveal chromosomal aberrations, changes in serum biochemical parameters, and histopathological alterations of fish from a reservoir near an electronic waste dumping area. Cd, Cr, and Pb concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Chromosomal aberrations were studied in kidney cells using a conventional technique. The biochemical parameters were measured using an automated analyzer, and histopathological photographs were obtained using a transmission electron microscope. The results showed that heavy-metal concentrations in water and sediment did not exceed the standards, whereas Cd and Pb concentrations in the gill and liver exceeded the standards. The accumulation pattern of heavy metals in organ tissues was exhibited according to the following order: gill > liver > muscle. Five types of chromosomal aberrations were a centromere gap, single chromatid break, deletion, single chromatid gap, and fragmentation. The average percentages of chromosomal aberrations in polluted and reference C. striata were 4.60% and 1.00%, respectively. The statistical analyses of chromosomal aberration and biochemical parameters indicated that total protein, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase significantly differed between the polluted and reference C. striata (p < 0.05). Standardized karyotype and idiogram of the blackspot snapper (Lutjanus ehrenbergii) and Spanish flag snapper (L. carponotatus) were studied. The renal tissue samples were taken from the male and female fish in each species. The metaphase chromosomes were prepared by the standard protocol. Giemsa’s and Ag-NOR staining techniques were applied to stain the chromosomes. The results showed that L. ehrenbergii and L. carponotatus had the same diploid chromosome number of 2n = 48, besides the fundamental number of these two species (NF) was 48 in both male and female. The types of autosomes were 28 large and 20 medium telocentric in L. ehrenbergii and there were 36 large and 12 medium telocentric chromosomes in L. carponotatus. Interestingly, L. ehrenbergii had the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) adjacent to the subcentromere of only one of each chromosome pair 10 and 21 (heteromorphic), while for L. carponotatus the NORs were found in chromosome pair 5. The karyotype formula could be deduced as: 2n (diploid) 48 = Lt 28 + Mt 20 and Lt 36 + Mt 12 for L. ehrenbergii and L. carponotatus, respectively.

The standardized karyotype and idiogram of the titan triggerfish, Balistoides viridescens (Bloch & Schneider 1801) from Phuket Province, Thailand, were obtained from the present study. Kidney cell samples were taken from five male and five female fish. The mitotic chromosome preparations were conducted directly from the kidney cells. Conventional staining and Ag-NOR banding techniques were applied to stain the chromosomes. The results indicated that the diploid chromosome number of B. viridescens was 2n=44, and the fundamental number (NF) was 60 in both sexes. The chromosome types consist of 2 large metacentric, 4 large acrocentric, 2 large telocentric, 8 medium acrocentric, 10 medium telocentric, 2 small acrocentric, and 16 small telocentric chromosomes. No strange-sized chromosomes related to sex was observed. The region adjacent to the subtelomeric of short arm of chromosome pair 3 showed clearly observable secondary constriction/NORs.
