1. The Effects of Online Mathematics Homework on Learning, Attitude, and Efficacy in a College Calculus Class -- A Case Study

Abstract

This case study examines how online mathematics homework impacts student learning, attitude, and efficacy in a college Calculus I class. This research is important because it provides data on student perceptions for how to effectively implement online homework. Participants for this study completed homework using a blend of online and paper formats. We use a mixed methods approach to analyze quantitative survey data and qualitative data collected in focus groups and interviews. Our findings indicate students benefited from using a combination of paper homework and online homework. Recommendations are made for how instructors can utilize the benefits of both approaches to support student learning, attitude, and efficacy.

Abstract

We started this paper with questioning the living conditions and considerations of undocumented unaccompanied minor asylum seekers living in the Netherlands. These undocumented youngsters are excluded from formal employment as well as from the provisions of the welfare state. By far the largest group of the undocumented (former) unaccompanied minors has never been involved in criminal activities and only one third of our respondents work in the informal economy. The sectors in which these youngsters perform informal work vary from cleaning and construction to catering and personal services. The work is characterised by uncertain working hours. There are few hours available and the work provided is often last minute. The pay is meagre and few respondents can survive exclusively on their earnings. The undocumented (former) unaccompanied minors are mainly supported by friends and private organisations for their living and housing. It is because of this support that the youngsters are not sleeping in the streets and are able to continue their illegal stay in the Netherlands. The strong focus of the youngsters on a future lawful residence in the Netherlands causes them to fear the risk of getting arrested while working, so they settle for the limited support of private organisations and friends. The support of private organisations and the focus of the youngsters on obtaining legal residence status thus constitute a buffer against exploitation. One could argue that all too often ‘ordinary crime’ is confused with ‘organised crime’. Authorities often assume too quickly that they are dealing with organised crime which obviously should be dealt with in policies accordingly and leads to disproportionally measures. The image of ‘disappeared’ former UMAs living illegally in the Netherlands as victims of brutal and internationally organised human traffickers fits remarkably well with this fallacy. In the evaluation of the pilot scheme titled ‘protected reception for UMAs at risk’, mentioned in the introduction of this chapter, the authors concluded not only that there is no legal basis for the placement of youngsters at risk in ‘protected reception’ but also that the number of UMAs who have actually been found in a situation of exploitation and even more so, exploitaiton by ‘organised criminals’, has been limited. Our research shows, there is very little empirical evidence to substantiate the concerns of Dutch politicians and policy makers with respect to the connection between UMAs and human traffickers and exploitation in the sex industry. The image of the (former) UMAs and the international organized human traffickers poorly matches reality. For the major part, these (former) UMAs 'just' went underground and stayed illegally in the Netherlands in the hope for a legal status.

32. ACE-Hemmer und Ödeme im Kopf-Hals-Bereich: Daten der Univ.-HNO Klinik Magdeburg von 2002 bis 2007

Abstract

Einleitung: ACE-Hemmer werden in der Behandlung der Hypertonie derzeit bei ca. 40 Mio. Menschen weltweit verwendet. Eine Nebenwirkung sind Angioödeme, welche an Haut und Schleimhäuten auftreten. Die Pathogenese ist noch nicht abschließend geklärt, wobei jedoch Bradykinin eine Schlüsselrolle darstellt. Material / Ergebnisse: Es wurden die Daten der 75746 behandelten Patienten (2002–2007) auf Ödem bzw. Hypertonie assoziierte Diagnosen geprüft. Dabei ergaben sich 486 Patienten mit Ödemen sowie 3962 mit Hypertonie. Nach Sichtung der Akten konnten 52 Patienten (28 Frauen, 24 Männer) mit ACE-Hemmer bedingten Ödemen ermittelt werden. Das Durchschnittsalter lag bei 70 ± 10,3 Jahren (Frauen 67 Jahre, Männer 73 Jahre). Die stationäre Verweildauer lag bei 3,0 ± 1,3 Tagen. Ursache waren verschiedenste ACE-Hemmer (Enalapril, Ramipril, Lisinopril, etc.). Es zeigten sich 4 Ödeme unter AT1-Antagonisten (Sartane). Lokalisiert waren die Ödeme an Zunge (34), Mundboden (17) und Larynx (15). 49 Patienten wurden nach konservativer Therapie (Prednisolon 290 ± 210 mg; Fenistil 6 ± 5 mg; Ranitic 80 ± 80 mg) bei kompletter Remission entlassen. 3 Patienten mussten schwellungsbedingt notintubiert werden. Allergien, weitere Medikamente (Polypragmasie mit 3 ± 2 Medikamenten) oder ein C1-Esterase-Inhibitor Mangel wurden als Ursachen ausgeschlossen. Schlussfolgerung: ACE-Hemmer sowie AT1-Blocker bedingte Ödeme sind weiterhin von zunehmender Häufigkeit und Relevanz. Prädiktive Faktoren (Alter, Geschlecht, Allergien, Medikamentenkogenese, etc.) lassen sich bisher nicht erkennen. Unter konservativer Therapie sind derzeit fast alle Patienten zufriedenstellend zu behandeln. Inwieweit neuere Medikamente (z. Bsp. Abstract

We describe HIDDEL (Health Information Disclosure, Description and Evaluation Language), formerly known as medPICS (platform for Internet content selection in medicine), a metadata vocabulary designed to enhance transparency, trust and quality of health information on the web. The vocabulary may be used (1) by webmasters to self-describe their contents and policies; (2) by infomediaries (e.g. Healthfinder, NHS Direct/NeLH), e.g. third party evaluators, rating or portal services, to annotate other websites; (3) and by users, to describe their preferences. As an XML application it conforms to the W3C's RDF Specification. The metadata vocabulary is primarily intended to enable descriptions of whole health websites or health information providers. The vocabulary is designed to provide a computer-readable electronic "label" of a health website, telling users who is behind the website, how the website is sponsored, what the con-tent, aim and target audience is, how the information was compiled, what risks the service bears, or what people say about the resource. Client-software can "read" this label automatically, compare it to the user s own set of preferences and needs, and alert and advise users.
