Abstract

We consider the decay of a polarized top quark into a polarized W-boson plus a bottom quark, followed by the decay of the W-boson into a pair of leptons or quarks. The polar angle distribution of the top spin relative to the W-momentum and the polar angle distribution of the lepton (or quark) in the W-rest frame is governed by three polarized and three unpolarized rate functions which are related to the double density matrix elements of the decay $t \to W^+ + b$. We obtain analytical expressions for the $O(\alpha_s)$ radiative corrections to the three polarized and three unpolarized rate functions. We also provide a comprehensive discussion of the dependence of the longitudinal, transverse and normal polarization of the top quarks produced at $e^+e^-$-colliders on beam polarization parameters., Comment: 13 pages, 3 postscript figures added, file standard.sty included, material on normal polarization added, some misprints corrected

Abstract

We study NLO QCD corrections as relevant to hadronic W decay in W pair production at a future 500 GeV electron-positron linac, with particular emphasis on the determination of triple gauge boson vertices. We find that hard gluon bremstrahlung may mimic signatures of anomalous triple gauge boson vertices in certain distributions. In order to observe a signal of possible CP violation in top-quark couplings, we study top-quark production and decay under the conditions of the Tevatron upgrade. Abstract

We discuss some theoretical uncertainties in the calculation of the cross section for charm production in charged current deep inelastic neutrino scattering related to ambiguities in the treatment of terms which are singular in the limit of a vanishing charm mass. In particular we compare the so-called variable flavour scheme where these terms are absorbed in the parton distribution functions containing the charm as an active flavour, with the so-called fixed flavour scheme with no charm mass subtraction where the charm appears only in the final state of fixed-order scattering matrix elements. Using available parametrizations of parton distribution functions we find that the two schemes lead to largely differing results for separate structure functions whereas the differences cancel to a large extent in the total cross section in that kinematical region which has been measured so far., Comment: 20pages, uuencoded postscript, figures included

11. The $\tau$ neutrino as a Majorana particle

Abstract

A Majorana mass term for the $\tau$ neutrino would induce neutrino - antineutrino mixing and thereby a process which violates fermion number by two units. We study the possibility of distinguishing between a massive Majorana and a Dirac $\tau$ neutrino, by measuring fermion number violating processes in a deep inelastic scattering experiment $\nu p \rightarrow \tau X$. We show that, if the neutrino beam is obtained from the decay of high energetic pions, the probability of obtaining "wrong sign" $\tau$ leptons is suppressed by a factor ${\cal{O}}(m_{\nu_{\tau}}^2 \theta^2/m_{\mu}^2)$ instead of the naively expected suppression factor $\theta^2 m_{\nu_{\tau}}^2/E_{\nu}^2$, where $E_{\nu}$ is the $\tau$ neutrino energy, $m_{\nu_{\tau}}$ and $m_{\mu}$ are the $\tau$-neutrino and muon masses, respectively, and $\theta$ is the $\nu_{\mu}$ - $\nu_{\tau}$ mixing angle. If $m_{\nu_{\tau}}$ is of the order of 10 MeV and $\theta$ is of the order of $0.01 - 0.04$ (the present bounds are ($m_{\nu_{\tau}} < 35 MeV, \theta < 0.04$) the next round of experiments may be able to distinguish between Majorana and Dirac $\tau$-neutrinos., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures (not included), MPI-Ph/93-48

Abstract

The leading heavy-top two-loop corrections to the \Zbb~vertex are determined from a direct evaluation of the corresponding Feynman diagrams in the large \Mt~limit. %The calculation is done in the naive %dimensional regularization scheme with anticommuting $\ga_5$. The leading one-loop top-mass effect is enhanced by $[1+\GF\Mt^2(9-\pi^2/3)/(8\pi^2\sqrt{2})]$. Abstract

Pelvic exenteration is a complex operation performed for locally advanced and recurrent pelvic cancers. The goal of surgery is to achieve clear margins, therefore identifying adjacent or involved organs, bone, muscle, nerves and/or vascular structures that may need resection. While these extensive resections are potentially curative, they can be associated with substantial morbidity. Recently, there has been a move to centralize care to specialized units, as this facilitates better multidisciplinary care input. Advancements in pelvic oncology and surgical innovation have redefined the boundaries of pelvic exenterative surgery. Combined with improved neoadjuvant therapies, advances in diagnostics, and better reconstructive techniques have provided quicker recovery and better quality of life outcomes, with improved survival This article provides highlights of the current management of advanced pelvic cancers in terms of surgical strategy and potential future developments.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Treatment for patients with recurrent ovarian cancer has been mainly based on systemic therapy. The role of secondary cytoreductive surgery is unclear. METHODS We randomly assigned patients with recurrent ovarian cancer who had a first relapse after a platinum-free interval (an interval during which no platinum-based chemotherapy was used) of 6 months or more to undergo secondary cytoreductive surgery and then receive platinum-based chemotherapy or to receive platinumbased chemotherapy alone. Patients were eligible if they presented with a positive Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gynäkologische Onkologie (AGO) score, defined as an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance-status score of 0 (on a 5-point scale, with higher scores indicating greater disability), ascites of less than 500 ml, and complete resection at initial surgery. A positive AGO score is used to identify patients in whom a complete resection might be achieved. The primary end point was overall survival. We also assessed quality of life and prognostic factors for survival. RESULTS A total of 407 patients underwent randomization: 206 were assigned to cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy, and 201 to chemotherapy alone. A complete resection was achieved in 75.5% of the patients in the surgery group who underwent the procedure. The median overall survival was 53.7 months in the surgery group and 46.0 months in the no-surgery group (hazard ratio for death, 0.75; 95% confidence interval, 0.59 to 0.96; P = 0.02). Patients with a complete resection had the most favorable outcome, with a median overall survival of 61.9 months. A benefit from surgery was seen in all analyses in subgroups according to prognostic factors. Quality-of-life measures through 1 year of follow-up did not differ between the two groups, and we observed no perioperative mortality within 30 days after surgery.
