On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the RDA, and as we approach the end of our Belmont-funded project, PARSEC (www.parsecproject.org), we felt it was time to discuss the practicalities of collaboration, data and code sharing for publication and re-use across the globe. The PARSEC team–from five geographically-dispersed countries–has collaborated for four years on the collation and harmonisation of data and the development of new methods for sharing data and code as we investigate the socio-economic effects of nature conservation initiatives. We have had very profitable partnerships in this endeavour with several leading data infrastructure and research tool providers, including ORCID, DataCite, the RDA itself, and the World Data System. In this session representatives of the key data science infrastructures (ORCID, Scholix, Crossref, DataCite, the WDS, the Environmental Data Initiative) and users (representing the voice of marine conservation, machine learning, data for artificial intelligence, health and life sciences, social inequalities in health, the geoscience community and domain variations in open science and open data) discuss the challenges they face and their vision of the optimum path to the future., This project was conducted as part of the Belmont Forum PARSEC project, funded under the Collaborative Research Action (CRA) on Science-Driven e-Infrastructures Innovation (SEI), with funding from FAPESP, the ANR, JST and the NSF, with collaborators from Australia, and support from the synthesis centre CESAB of the French Foundation for Research on Biodiversity.

PIDs work best when they work together! Join us for this session co-hosted by DataCite, Crossref, ORCID and ROR, where we’ll explore the possibilities for reducing administrative burden and increasing transparency throughout the research lifecycle that open PID systems and metadata enable. Along the way, you’ll hear from experts at each organization about how you can maximize PID connections in your workflows, and how open infrastructure providers are collaborating to make research and the world a PIDder place. Join Crossref and Europe PMC so we can bring you up to speed on why we’re working together with funders to register grant metadata and create global identifiers for grants. *Spoiler alert* connecting grant information and persistent identifiers with research outputs will help researchers, funders, publishers and institutions easily see the outputs that result from individual grants. It makes grant metadata openly available to help identify connections between projects and collaborators. And will avoid duplication of effort in reporting and overlapping grants or repeated projects. Europe PMC were early adopters, registering grants for Wellcome since 2019, and have since been joined by a growing number of other organizations as this initiative scales up. There is increasing awareness of the need to reliably connect articles, data, affiliation, contributor and funding information to expose trends and opportunities in the research ecosystem, enable reliable streamlined reporting to key stakeholders and to ensure transparency and trust in research.To support this, metadata for research objects can’t exist in a vacuum either. It needs to reflect these relationships and incorporate a range of persistent identifiers to do so. And it needs to be open so that it can populate through different systems. DataCite, ROR, Crossref and ORCID have been working together to look at how relationships are asserted between articles, data and other content types, and what connecting research objects to other identifiers helps us see: which outputs resulted from a research grant, which institutions are particularly strong in which areas, where and how are openly available data and software used, and who researchers are collaborating with. We can also use these existing relationships to infer further connections via tools like the PID Graph and the community can (re)use our open metadata to build new services and tools.Join representatives from ORCID, DataCite, ROR and Crossref as we share the kind of information that’s already available, what work we still have to do and our plans to enhance this in collaboration with our communities."

The panel for this session consists of: Catriona MacCallum, Hindawi Daniella Lowenberg, California Digital Library Helena Cousijn, DataCite John Chodacki, California Digital Library (moderator) Martin Fenner, DataCite Rachael Lammey, Crossref The underlying data created (and/or reused and remixed) for research is becoming as crucial as the resulting text-based output - that’s not up for debate. However, what merits discussion is how our various communities can continue to work together to support the sharing, linking and citation of data. Despite all previous efforts and panel discussions, we’re still not there yet. There are a number of key parts to this, and collaboration is key to making these parts work together so that the research community can realise the benefits that accurate, acknowledged article/data linking: education for researchers on data publishing encouragement and support for researchers who want to publish data changes in policies and workflows for publishers and repositories provision of infrastructure to collect and disseminate this information development of initiatives and tools to measure data usage and data citations In that vein, this panel session will dig into the what, the why, and the how of data sharing and data citation. The panel will include representatives from the perspectives of publishers, repositories, infrastructure developers and industry, who will provide an update on how things have developed since the FORCE11 Data Citation Principles first came out, and who will discuss the lessons learned from collaborations within the Data Citation Implementation pilot. We’ll discuss where things stand with data sharing and data citation today, what the issues are, whether we are ready to start taking steps towards data metrics and what we need to do to finally start supporting data with the same rigour as we support other scholarly outputs.

All parties in the research enterprise aim to improve the discoverability of content. Whether they’re funders, authors, preprint servers, publishers, libraries, repositories. Or the numerous tools seeking to add value through search, discovery, annotation, or analyses. So many of these organizations contribute along the way but often important details get mistyped, misrepresented, or missed out entirely. What if we could make it easy to include as much information as possible? All the basic stuff but also license info, funding/grant data, ORCID iDs, organization IDs, clinical trial data, and–along the way–corrections and retractions? What if it was a simple case of entering once, and watching that work–with clean and “complete” metadata–grow and get added to, permeating through other systems, contributing to research throughout the world? It’s in the hands of many. A group of organizations from all over the world (including Crossref, DataCite, ORCID, OpenAIRE, California Digital Library, Wikimedia, OCLC among others) have come together to rally the community around this critical issue in scholarly communications: sharing richer metadata. Working together we can build on existing efforts to make research more discoverable. We will seek input from the relevant audiences, to share user stories about the journey that metadata takes, and to help prioritise goals and tactics for a new metadata advocacy campaign called Metadata 2020. Metadata 2020 is a campaign that is bigger than just one organization or sector, but a collective responsibility shared by us all.
