Abstract

Across the last 150 years, global CO2 emissions have grown at an increasing, exponential pace. Based on the well‐documented tendency to underestimate such exponential growth, we hypothesize and test in three studies (total N = 1796, including one nationally representative US sample) that people would fail to understand the historical, exponential growth of global CO2 emissions. However, we also show that providing a simple rule of thumb can serve as an effective educational boost that helps overcome this biased perception. Participants who were provided with the heuristic that historically, global CO2 emissions have doubled every thirty years provided highly accurate estimates of past emission levels. Compared to participants who relied on intuition, those who applied this doubling heuristic avoided common errors in understanding the current state of the climate change threat and made more realistic expectations of the future consequences of uninterrupted growth. Together, these studies show that overcoming the exponential growth bias helps people form more accurate perceptions of historic CO2 emissions growth and understand the difficulty of curbing future emissions. Abstract

As a political ideology, conservatism is primarily focused on maintaining and restoring past society. This aspect is so central that conservatives' support for policies is increased simply by framing them as a return to the past. Until now, the underlying process of this temporal framing effect is unclear. Drawing on theories of conservatism as motivated social cognition, four preregistered studies (Ntotal = 2,405) test the hypothesis that it results from conservatives' epistemic and existential beliefs about the past. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrate that American conservatives' preference for past-focused political communication is blocked if the past is perceived to be inconsistent with these beliefs. Studies 3 and 4 (a representative UK sample replication) find that the effect is mediated by epistemic and existential beliefs about the past. This research theoretically integrates the earlier-established conservative temporal framing effect into the wider literature of conservatism as motivated social cognition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Political-Ideological Differences in Cultural Pessimism and Nostalgia Reflect People’s Evaluation of Their Nation’s Historical Developments

Abstract

Western conservatives are more focused on the past than are liberals: They experience stronger cultural pessimism and nostalgically yearn back for past society. We test the hypothesis that this ideological difference reflects long-term national-historical developments, by comparing ideological differences in the United States and Türkiye. Using archival data, Study 1 confirms that whereas U.S. society over the last century moved in a liberal direction, Turkish society recently shifted toward greater conservatism. Consistent with predictions, Studies 2 and 3 show that the relationship between political ideology and cultural pessimism is reversed in Türkiye, compared with the United States. Partially consistent with predictions, in both studies, the link between ideology and a nostalgic yearning for the past is attenuated (and essentially blocked) in Türkiye, although not reversed, compared with the United States. Together, these findings suggest that ideological differences in pessimism and nostalgia reflect, at least partially, objective differences in national-historical development.

19. Does framing climate change policies to fit with epistemic needs for predictability reduce conservatives' opposition?

Abstract

A short‐term obstacle to united political action to fight climate change in various countries is opposition to pro‐environmental policies among conservatives. Three preregistered studies test the hypothesis that because conservatives have a higher need for closure than liberals (Hypothesis 1), framing pro‐environmental policies in a way that appeals to the need for closure, reduces conservatives' opposition to these policies (Hypothesis 2). Study 1 confirms Hypothesis 1. Next, two studies test Hypothesis 2 and find that conservatives are less opposed to pro‐environmental policies proposed by a politician (Study 2) or an NGO (Study 3) if these policies are framed in a way that appeals to the need for closure, while the opposite is the case for liberals. Across these two studies, we also test the underlying process but find no evidence for the idea that differences in need for closure mediate the effect (Hypothesis 3a). Instead, the effect is primarily driven by inferences about group membership and ingroup bias (Hypothesis 3b, non‐preregistered). That is, these data suggest that framing policies to appeal to closure needs reduces conservatives' opposition because they infer that the policy is proposed by a fellow conservative. 24. You Can Leave Your Glasses on

Abstract

Abstract.Does wearing glasses hurt or help politicians in elections? Although some research shows that glasses signal unattractiveness, glasses also increase perceptions of competence. In eight studies, participants voted for politicians wearing (photoshopped) glasses or not. Wearing glasses increased politicians’ electoral success in the US (Study 1), independent of their political orientation (Studies 2a and 2b). This positive effect was especially strong when intelligence was important (Study 3), and even occurred if glasses were used strategically (Study 4). However, it did not extend to India (Study 5) due to different cultural associations with glasses (Study 6). Furthermore, while intelligence mediated the effect, warmth did not (Study 7). In summary, wearing glasses can robustly boost electoral success, at least in Western cultures.

Abstract

These two studies aim to answer the question of how framings of responsibility for the climate crisis and frames of fairness in current mitigation action influence attitudes toward individual behaviors (e.g., energy consumption, mobility behavior, dietary choices, general consumption) and collective/political behaviors (e.g., voting behavior, protesting, engagement in NGOs or political parties, civil disobedience). Frames of responsibility are defined as communicative tools to assign responsibility for both the causes and mitigation of the climate crisis to specific people or institutions (Iyengar, 1989). In the studies, responsibility will be either assigned to individuals or to corporations and political stakeholders and then participants’ attitudes towards different climate crisis behaviors will be assessed. Likewise, frames of fairness state whether others are putting in the effort to solve the public good dilemma of the climate crisis (Jamieson, 2009; Markowitz, 2012). Furthermore, the second study will investigate whether the nature of a person's environmental identity and the strength of said identity moderates the effects of different framings. By filling the gaps in the existing literature on responsibility framings, perceptions of fairness, and climate crisis behavior, this study could offer important insights into how the public discourse on the climate crisis affects what individuals perceive as good and efficient to combat the existential threat of the climate crisis. It could further practical implications for scientists, the media, political stakeholders, NGOs, and activists on how to communicate about the climate crisis more efficiently and how to evoke climate crisis behavior in the general public.

Abstract

The present study investigated the role of control as a moderator in reaction to ostracism among male violent offenders diagnosed with ASPD (N = 33) compared to a control sample consisting of males from the normal population without a known history of violence, or diagnosis of ASPD, matched for age and educational level (N = 35). Participants played an altered version of the Cyberball game in which they could control the course of the game or not. The authors predicted and found that having control prior to ostracism would mitigate the effect of ostracism on implicit threat vigilance among violent offenders diagnosed with ASPD, but not among normal individuals. The results suggest that control needs are crucial in the typology of ASPD.

42. Why People Hate Congress but Love Their Own Congressperson: An Information Processing Explanation

Abstract

Citizens in Western democracies often have negative attitudes toward political bodies, yet consistently re-elect their own representatives to these same political bodies. They hate Congress, but love their own congressperson. In contrast to resource-based explanations, we propose that this Paradox of Congressional Support is partly due to the wide availability of negative information about politicians in open societies combined with basic processes of information processing. Five studies found that unrelated negative political information decreases attitudes toward political categories such as U.S. governors but has no effect on attitudes of familiar, individual politicians (e.g., one's own governor); additional studies further identify familiarity as the critical process. Importantly, we demonstrate that this effect generalizes to all U.S. regions and remains when controlling for and is not moderated by political ideology. These results place a presumed macrolevel political paradox within the domain of cognitive mechanisms of basic information processing.

46. Leading and Working From Home in Times of COVID-19: On the Perceived Changes in Leadership Behaviors

Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, managers and employees in many organizations suddenly are forced to work from home. Although working from home (WFH) is not a new phenomenon, it is new in its current scale and scope because of COVID-19. Against this background, we investigate the effect of WFH during the COVID-19 crisis on changes in leadership behaviors, and associated changes in perceived manager quality and productivity, at different hierarchical levels in organizations. Based on the literature, we develop two predictions in opposite directions. On the one hand, implementing WFH may force managers to show less direction and control and especially more delegation. On the other hand, research into the effects of exogenous shocks such as COVID-19, suggests that managers may become more controlling and delegate less. Consistent with the first prediction, we find that managers perceive they execute significantly less control and delegate more. Employees also perceive a significant decrease in control, however they perceive on average no change in delegation. Furthermore, and in line with the second prediction, employees of lower-level managers even report a significant decrease in delegation. Finally, our results show that increased delegation is associated with increased perceived productivity and higher manager quality. Together, these results suggest that in the context of the COVID-19 crisis, the effectiveness of WFH might be hampered by the fact that required changes in leadership behaviors, in particular in delegation, are difficult to realize in times of crisis.
