Sad1 and UNC84 (SUN) and Klarsicht, ANC‐1, and Syne homology (KASH) proteins interact at the nuclear periphery to form the linker of nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton (LINC) complex, spanning the nuclear envelope (NE) and connecting the cytoskeleton with the nuclear interior. It is now well‐documented that several cellular functions depend on LINC complex formation, including cell differentiation and migration. Intriguingly, recent studies suggest that SUN proteins participate in cellular processes where their association with KASH proteins may not be required. Building on this recent research, we elaborate on the hypothesis that SUN proteins may perform LINC‐independent functions and discuss the modalities that may allow SUN proteins to function at the INM when they are not forming LINC complex. We have developed a finite element model to simulate the penetration of nanoneedles into the cellular nucleus. It is found that the nuclear lamina, the primary supporting structure of the nuclear membrane, plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the nuclear envelope and enhancing stress concentration in the nuclear membrane. Notably, nuclear lamina A exhibits a more pronounced effect compared to nuclear lamina B. Subsequently, we further conducted experiments by controlling the time of osteopontin (OPN) treatment to modify the nuclear lamina density, and the results showed that an increase in nuclear lamina density enhances the probability of nanoneedle penetration into the nuclear membrane. Through employing both simulation and experimental techniques, we have gathered compelling evidence indicating that an augmented density of nuclear lamina A can enhance the penetration of nanoneedles into the nuclear membrane. The vertebral column (spinal column, spine, or backbone) forms the central axis of the body's skeleton. It supports the skull superiorly and participates in the formation of the pelvis inferiorly. The vertebral column comprises the following five regions in cephalocaudal sequence: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal. The vertebral column contains the spinal cord within the vertebral canal, protecting the spinal cord from external trauma. Optimal medical and surgical management of spinal disease is crucially dependent on accurate clinical and radiological diagnosis, which in turn are reliant on a sound understanding of the structural and functional anatomy of the vertebral column. In this article a general description of the articulated vertebral column is followed by a description of the morphology of representative vertebrae from the vertebral regions. ABSTRACTIn eukaryotic cells, the nuclear envelope (NE) is a membrane partition between the nucleus and the cytoplasm to compartmentalize nuclear contents. It plays an important role in facilitating nuclear functions including transcription, DNA replication and repair. In mammalian cells, the NE breaks down and then reforms during cell division, and in interphase it is restored shortly after the NE rupture induced by mechanical force. In this way, the partitioning effect is regulated through dynamic processes throughout the cell cycle. A failure in rebuilding the NE structure triggers the mixing of nuclear and cytoplasmic contents, leading to catastrophic consequences for the nuclear functions. Whereas the precise details of molecular mechanisms for NE reformation during cell division and NE restoration in interphase are still being investigated, here, we mostly focus on mammalian cells to describe key aspects that have been identified and to discuss the crosstalk between them.

Background and Objective: The most common injuries to upper cervical spine are fractures of the second cervical vertebrae. The study aims to evaluate the morphometry of the neural arch of the second cervical vertebrae in the South Indian population. Materials and Methods: Sixty-three second cervical vertebrae of undetermined gender and age without any gross defect were used for the study. The dimensions of neural arch, including superior articular facet, inferior articular facet, pediculoisthmic component, lamina, spinous process, foramen transversarium, and vertebral foramen, were measured by two independent observers using digital vernier caliper accurate to 0.1 mm and the data was analyzed. Descriptive statistics were obtained for the variables. Paired t-test was done to compare the measurements between right and left sides. Results: There was no statistical difference between the right and left sides of the dimensions of superior articular facets, foramen transversarium, and the transverse diameter of inferior articular facet. The anteroposterior diameter of the inferior articular facets was more on the right side (P = 0.009). The width of the pediculoisthmic component in both the superior and inferior aspects was found to be less on the right side than that of the left (P = 0.006 and P = 0.031, respectively). The thickness in the middle one-third of laminae was optimum for bilateral safe screw insertion (=4.0 mm) in 77% specimens. Conclusion: In summary, measurements of the transverse diameter of superior articular facet and thickness of lamina differed significantly from those reported in literature. Recent biochemical and microscopic measurements have revealed fluctuating chromatin structures of 10–7 to 10–5 m. These structures are intrinsically related to DNA transcription and replication; therefore, elucidating the physical principles of chromatin structural dynamics is essential for understanding cell functions. A three-dimensional computational model of the whole human genome was developed through the physics-based bottom-up approach, which quantitatively explained various genomic and microscopic data on chromatin. The model suggests that the difference in the functional activity among chromatin domains leads to the heterogeneous domain movement in the genome, which entropically drives chromatin phase separation to form A and B compartments. The deep shale of the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in the southern Sichuan Basin has high gas potential. The development characteristics of lamination could significantly impact reservoir property. Samples were investigated using microscopic observation, element analysis, organic petrology analysis, mineralogy analysis, and pore structure analysis to determine the types of laminae and laminasets, clarify the formation conditions of argillaceous lamina and silty lamina as well as their relationships with the sedimentary environment, and explore the influence of laminae on shale reservoir property. Results indicate that the Wufeng Formation shale exhibits weak development of laminae due to bioturbation, while the Longmaxi Formation shale develops continuous, parallel, and plate-like laminae. Compared with light silty lamina-rich shale, dark argillaceous lamina-rich shale usually develops in an anoxic reduction environment, with higher total organic carbon content, porosity, pore volume, specific surface area, and more developed organic matter pores, which can provide greater space for shale gas adsorption and storage. Shales in the middle section of the Longmaxi Formation are characterized by the development of silty-argillaceous interbedded type laminaset, which have good reservoir performance, making them the primary target for deep shale gas exploration and development. Introduction: Bone regenerations are common procedures used to restore the required bone width or height for adequate implant placement. Among the wide variety of materials developed for this purpose, the soft collagenated porcine membrane known as cortical lamina (OsteoBiol® Lamina, Tecnoss®, Giaveno, Italy) has provided promising clinical and histological results. It was used along with equine-derived bone particles (OsteoBiol® Gen-Os®, Tecnoss®, Giaveno, Italy) in a series of horizontal bone augmentations to clinically, radiologically and histologically evaluate the lateral bone augmentation, and to measure the vertical gain, if present, at the site of implant placement. Methods: Fifteen healthy patients with ridges < 4mm needing implant placement were included. The area was augmented using equine bone and the cortical lamina was immobilised using fixation screws. Six months later, at implant placement, a biopsy was taken for non-demineralised histology. Radiological superimposition of the pre and post-operative CBCT scans was made to calculate the radiological bone gain at the site of implant placement. Bone gain was also studied using histomorphometrical analysis. Results: At 6 months, implant placement was possible in all cases except one, where a total of 26 implants were placed in 14 patients. CBCT superimposition showed that the mean horizontal width had increased significantly at the level 0 mm, 2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm of the implant sites. Histology showed signs of bone remodelling and vital bone formation. Histomorphometric results showed a higher bone percentage in the deep part of the biopsy compared to the superficial one. Conclusions:The porcine cortical lamina membrane used with the equine xenograft particles seems to be a promising technique for the horizontal bone augmentation. Randomized controlled clinical trials are still needed to evaluate the superiority of this membrane compared to the conventional regeneration techniques along with long term follow up of the regenerated bone. How our brain generates diverse neuron types that assemble into precise neural circuits remains unclear. Using Drosophila lamina neuron types (L1-L5), we show that the primary homeodomain transcription factor (HDTF) brain-specific homeobox (Bsh) is initiated in progenitors and maintained in L4/L5 neurons to adulthood. Bsh activates secondary HDTFs Ap (L4) and Pdm3 (L5) and specifies L4/L5 neuronal fates while repressing the HDTF Zfh1 to prevent ectopic L1/L3 fates (control: L1-L5; Bsh-knockdown: L1-L3), thereby generating lamina neuronal diversity for normal visual sensitivity. Subsequently, in L4 neurons, Bsh and Ap function in a feed-forward loop to activate the synapse recognition molecule DIP-β, thereby bridging neuronal fate decision to synaptic connectivity. Expression of a Bsh:Dam, specifically in L4, reveals Bsh binding to the DIP-β locus and additional candidate L4 functional identity genes. We propose that HDTFs function hierarchically to coordinate neuronal molecular identity, circuit formation, and function. Hierarchical HDTFs may represent a conserved mechanism for linking neuronal diversity to circuit assembly and function.

Notch signaling is an evolutionarily conserved pathway for specifying binary neuronal fates, yet how it specifies different fates in different contexts remains elusive. In our accompanying paper, using the Drosophila lamina neuron types (L1-L5) as a model, we show that the primary homeodomain transcription factor (HDTF) Bsh activates secondary HDTFs Ap (L4) and Pdm3 (L5) and specifies L4/L5 neuronal fates. Here we test the hypothesis that Notch signaling enables Bsh to differentially specify L4 and L5 fates. We show asymmetric Notch signaling between newborn L4 and L5 neurons, but they are not siblings; rather, Notch signaling in L4 is due to Delta expression in adjacent L1 neurons. While Notch signaling and Bsh expression are mutually independent, Notch is necessary and sufficient for Bsh to specify L4 fate over L5. The NotchON L4, compared to NotchOFF L5, has a distinct open chromatin landscape which allows Bsh to bind distinct genomic loci, leading to L4-specific identity gene transcription. We propose a novel model in which Notch signaling is integrated with the primary HDTF activity to diversify neuron types by directly or indirectly generating a distinct open chromatin landscape that constrains the pool of genes that a primary HDTF can activate.

Background. The adaptive changes during the distribution of Prunus armeniaca L. in Dagestan are important for understanding microevolution, structural and functional differentiation processes of populations along environmental gradients based on the organism’s reaction norm. They can be examined by studying leaf anatomical features, having ecologically differentiating significance in natural populations with contrasting growth conditions. Materials and methods. The material for the study of leaf anatomical features was taken from 7 apricot trees in 3 growing areas of Mountainous Dagestan. Comparative analysis was carried out for 42 morphological, anatomical and index parameters of the lamina and petiole. Results. The anocytic structure type of the stomatal apparatus was found in all apricot samples. The differences were determined by the degree of stomata submergence depending on the cuticle’s development. Trees from greater heights had more trichomes on the leaf’s upper side than on its underside. Significant differences between the extreme height reference points were recorded for the number of stomata, cells of the lower epidermis, layers of the sclerenchyma, and xylem thickness. Most of the traits of the lamina decreased, and those of the petiole increased with the altitude. Conclusion. The traits corresponding to the lower and upper altitude limits of P. armeniaca were identified on the basis of the lamina and petiole anatomical features. More xerophytic leaf traits were recorded for the altitudes of 550 m and 1900 m, and mesophytic ones for 1700 m and 1800 m. Endoderm thickness, number of endosperm layers, petiole index, and stomatal index were identified as stable indicators according to the reaction norm within the scope of altitudes: The differences were proved for more plastic traits (number of cells of the upper and lower epidermis, number of stomata, thickness of the lamina and cuticle, and the petiole’s long axis diameter).

Laminated rocks, which are composed of two types of laminae (referred to as 'strong lamina' (SL) and 'weak lamina' (WL)), are prevalent in rock engineering construction. Determining their mechanical parameters is crucial, yet obtaining them separately through conventional physical experiments is challenging. While specialized techniques like Nano-indentation testing can be employed, they are often costly (Li et al., Mar Pet Geol 143:105740, 2022), and the relationship between these test results and macroscopic mechanical properties remains uncertain. In this study, a method for estimating the mechanical parameters of SL and WL based on uniaxial tests is proposed. The elastic moduli and Poisson ratios for both materials are derived first, followed by equations estimating their compression and tensile strengths. The internal friction angles and cohesive forces are obtained through correlations of rock mechanics parameters. Two numerical simulations were conducted and compared to physical tests, and the comparison results show that the proposed method is validated. A necessary evaluation method and suggestions for further parameter adjustments are provided. Overall, this method offers significant guidance for engineering projects involving laminated rocks and is worth popularizing. Objective Patients with basilar invagination (BI) had high incidences of vertebral variations and high-riding vertebral artery (HRVA) that might restrict the use of pedicle or pars screw and increase the use of translaminar screw on axis. Here, we conducted a radiographic study to investigate the feasibility of translaminar screws and the bone quality of C2 laminae in patients with BI, which were compared with those without BI as control to provide guidelines for safe placement. Methods In this study, a total of 410 patients (205 consecutive patients with BI and 205 matched patients without BI) and 820 unilateral laminae of the axis were included at a 1:1 ratio. Comparisons with regard to insertion parameters (laminar length, thickness, angle, and height) for C2 translaminar screw placement and Hounsfield unit (HU) values for the assessment of the appropriate bone mineral density of C2 laminae between BI and control groups were performed. Besides, the subgroup analyses based on the Goel A and B classification of BI, HRVA, atlas occipitalization, and C2/3 assimilation were also carried out. Furthermore, the factors that might affect the insertion parameters and HU values were explored through multiple linear regression analyses. Results The BI group showed a significantly smaller laminar length, thickness, height, and HU value than the control group, whereas no significant difference was observed regarding the laminar angle. By contrast, the control group showed significantly higher rates of acceptability for unilateral and bilateral translaminar screw fixations than the BI group. Subgroup analyses showed that the classification of Goel A and B, HRVA, atlas occipitalization, and C2/3 assimilation affected the insertion parameters except the HU values. Multiple linear regression indicated that the laminar length was significantly associated with the male gender (B = 0.190, p < 0.001), diagnoses of HRVA (B = -0.109, p < 0.001), Goel A (B = -0.167, p < 0.001), and C2/3 assimilation (B = -0.079, p = 0.029); the laminar thickness was significantly associated with the male gender (B = 0.353, p < 0.001), diagnoses of HRVA (B = -0.430, p < 0.001), Goel B (B = -0.249, p = 0.026), and distance from the top of odontoid to the Chamberlain line (B = -0.025, p = 0.003); laminar HU values were significantly associated with age (B = -2.517, p < 0.001), Goel A (B = -44.205, p < 0.001), Goel B (B = -25.704, p = 0.014), and laminar thickness (B = -11.706, p = 0.001). Conclusion Patients with BI had narrower and smaller laminae with lower HU values and lower unilateral and bilateral acceptability for translaminar screws than patients without BI. Preoperative 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography were needed for BI patients.

This study investigates the impact of adhesive spread rates and lamina assembly patterns on the physical and mechanical properties of glue laminated lumber (glulam) manufactured from Kelempayan wood (Neolamarckia cadamba (Roxb.) Bosser). For this purpose, lab-scale 3-ply homogenous glulams were manufactured using low-MOE, average-MOE, and high-MOE laminas, and 3-ply mixed glulams of low-high-low-MOE and high-low-high-MOE lamina, with an adhesive spread rate of 100 g/m² applied on both sides of the lamina. A 3-ply homogenous glulam was also manufactured using the average-MOE lamina with an adhesive spread rate of 200 g/m². The physical and mechanical properties of the glulam, including moisture content, density, modulus of rupture (MOR), and modulus of elasticity (MOE), were examined and compared to the Japanese Industrial Standards (JAS) for glulam. The results found that the adhesive spread rates did not have a significant effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the glulam. However, the lamina assembly patterns had a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the glulam. The highest MOR and MOE were observed in the homogenous glulam manufactured from the high-MOE laminas, followed by the mixed glulam manufactured from the high-low-high-MOE laminas. These assembly patterns meet the MOR and MOE requirements specified in the 3-ply homogeneous structural grade glulam standard, indicating that Kelempayan wood can be a feasible option for glulam production. How the nuclear architectonic is influencing gene expression programs is a fast developing area of research. In this review we track the accumulated data about interphase nucleus architectonic and how it is changing in various cellular populations of eukaryotes. We also discuss in details how major structural components of chromosomes - centromeres and telomeres - are organized. They consist of tandem repeats and transposons, closely related with each other. Mobile genetic elements play a key role in creating ectopic chromosomal contacts and laminal attachments of genomic elements. We note that retrotransposons autonomous long repeats LINE and non-autonomous short repeats SINE are localized differently over chromosomes. LINEs are preferably located in heterochromatin while SINEs are associated with euchromatin. They are involved in nuclear architectonic dynamic while gene expression programs are changing. We also consider the data about retrotransposons' high evolutionary rate and their involvement into decreasing reproduction of inter-species hybrids. The relationship between genomic 'resistance' toward retrotransposition and the success insertion rate of several viruses is also discussed. The relationship between the variability of retrotranspositions, morphogenesis and speciation, as well as resistance to natural selection is a big question in contemporary medicine and biology given recent pandemic. Abstract Background A retrospective study compared the results of a lamina with spinous process (LSP) and an iliac graft (IG) as bone grafts in single-segment lumbar pyogenic spondylodiscitis (LPS) through one-stage-posterior-only approach with radical debridement and instrumentation. Methods A LSP was placed in 17 patients (group A), and an IG was implemented in 20 patients (group B). The surgery time, surgery hemorrhage, hospital stay, drainage, and follow-up (FU) were recorded and compared. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) level, visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), segmental angle, intervertebral height and bony fusion time were compared preoperatively and at the final FU. Results All patients were followed-up for a mean of 27.94 ± 2.35 months in group A and 30.29 ± 1.89 months in group B, without a difference. The mean age was younger in group A than in group B (P

Introduction: The knowledge of morphometric parameters of laminae of cervical vertebrae is indispensable in surgical procedures and developing instrumentation for surgical processes. Literature reports ethnic and geographical variations reported in these dimensions. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included analysis of laminae of 212 cervical vertebrae (C3–C6). The length of superior border of lamina and inferior border of lamina was measured on the right and left sides using vernier caliper. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was done with the help of Microsoft Excel version 2021. Results: The length of the superior border of lamina on both sides increases from C3 to C5. The length of the inferior border of the lamina on both sides decreases from C3 to C4, then on the right side, it increases from C4 to C5 and then decreases from C5 to C6, and on the left side, it increases from C4 to C6. At C4, the length of superior border of lamina on the right side differed statistically from the length of superior border of lamina on the left side (P = 0.042). A significant difference between lengths of the inferior border of laminae on the right and left sides was also found at the C5 vertebra (P = 0.001) and C6 vertebra (P = 0.012). No significant difference in thickness and height of lamina was observed between right and left sides. Conclusion: The present study indicates morphometric parameters of laminae of typical cervical vertebrae in the North West Indian population differ from the same parameters in Brazilian as well as South Indian populations. The length of superior border as well as inferior border of lamina has significant differences between right and left sides. However, there is no significant difference in height and thickness of laminae between right and left sides.

Introduction. Fractures of the distal radius epiphysis are the most common fractures of the upper limb, present both in the general population active following major trauma and in the elderly population in minimal trauma due to osteoporosis. Among the adjuvant therapies for orthopedic treatment of distal radius epiphyseal fracture we can list Super Inductive System (SIS), a therapy based on the interaction between the electric field and the human body with the improvement of the healing process by acting on the pathophysiological stages of bone callus. Material and method. A clinical case study was performed on a 28-year-old patient, hospitalized and treated in the neurosurgery department of the Constanta County and Emergency Hospital for a polytrauma by road accident (passenger) with amyelotic cervical vertebral trauma, thoracic trauma and trauma to the right upper limb, subsequently performing 12 SIS therapy sessions at the Balneal and Rehabilitation Sanatorium of Techirghiol. CT examination of the cervical spine reveals fractures of C4 vertebra (the blade and pedicle) and C5 vertebra (vertebral body, lamina and pedicle). Right forearm radiography reveals fracture of the right radial styloid. After conservative treatment of the cervical injury and orthopedic treatment of the upper limb injury, the clinical evolution is favorable, allowing the patient to be discharged and allowed to do 12 sessions of SIS therapy, 3 times a week, within 4 weeks. The subsequent clinical and paraclinical evolution was favorable for the outpatient orthopedic ambulatory reevaluation performed at 5 weeks. Results and discussions. Due to the type of fracture of the radial distal epiphysis (linear fracture without displacement), absence of comorbidities and young age, led to the indication of orthopedic treatment with immobilization in the antebrachio-palmarcast, which allowed subsequent physiotherapy.

The idea of columns as an organizing cortical unit emerged from physiologic studies in the sensory systems. Connectional studies and molecular markers pointed to widespread presence of modular label that necessitated revision of the classical concept of columns. The general principle of cortical systematic variation in laminar structure is at the core of cortical organization. Systematic variation can be traced to the phylogenetically ancient limbic cortices, which have the simplest laminar structure, and continues through eulaminate cortices that show sequential elaboration of their six layers. Connections are governed by relational rules, whereby columns or modules with a vertical organization represent the feedforward mode of communication from earlier-to later processing cortices. Conversely, feedback connections are laminar-based and connect later-with earlier processing areas; both patterns are established in development. Based on studies in primates, the columnar/modular pattern of communication appears to be newer in evolution, while the broadly based laminar pattern represents an older system. The graded variation of cortices entails a rich variety of patterns of connections into modules, layers, and mixed arrangements as the laminar and modular patterns of communication intersect in the cortex. This framework suggests an ordered architecture poised to facilitate seamless recruitment of areas in behavior, in patterns that are affected in diseases of developmental origin. Simple Summary: Serotonin is ubiquitously expressed in vertebrates and invertebrates, where it regulates specific behavioural patterns. Though the specific effects of serotonin release in the optic lobe are not entirely known, increasing evidence associates the serotonergic system with optic lobe-mediated behaviours. In this study, the localization of serotonin transporter (SERT) was immunohistochemically analysed in the optic lobes of moderate, docile and aggressive worker honeybees. SERT-immunoreactive fibres were stratified in the optic lobe and distributed in the three visual neuropils: lamina, medulla and lobula. Interestingly, SERT immunoreactivity was inversely related to aggressive behaviour. The present study indicates that low levels of serotonin in the optic lobe are associated with aggressive behaviour. Visual information is processed in the optic lobes, which consist of three retinotopic neuropils. These are the lamina, the medulla and the lobula. Biogenic amines play a crucial role in the control of insect responsiveness, and serotonin is clearly related to aggressiveness in invertebrates. Previous studies suggest that serotonin modulates aggression-related behaviours, possibly via alterations in optic lobe activity. The aim of this investigation was to immunohistochemically localize the distribution of serotonin transporter (SERT) in the optic lobe of moderate, docile and aggressive worker honeybees. SERT-immunoreactive fibres showed a wide distribution in the lamina, medulla and lobula; interestingly, the highest percentage of SERT immunoreactivity was observed across all the visual neuropils of the docile group. Although future research is needed to determine the relationship between the distribution of serotonin fibres in the honeybee brain and aggressive behaviours, our immunohistochemical study provides an anatomical basis supporting the role of serotonin in aggressive behaviour in the honeybee. Background: Cortical visual prostheses often use penetrating electrode arrays to deliver microstimulation to the visual cortex. To optimize electrode placement within the cortex, the neural responses to microstimulation at different cortical depths must first be understood. Objective: We investigated how the neural responses evoked by microstimulation in cortex varied with cortical depth, of both stimulation and response. Methods: A 32-channel single shank electrode array was inserted into the primary visual cortex of anaesthetized rats, such that it spanned all cortical layers. Microstimulation with currents up to 14 μA (single biphasic pulse, 200 μs per phase) was applied at depths spanning 1600 μm, while simultaneously recording neural activity on all channels within a response window 2.25–11 ms. Results: Stimulation elicited elevated neuronal firing rates at all depths of cortex. Compared to deep sites, superficial stimulation sites responded with higher firing rates at a given current and had lower thresholds. The laminar spread of evoked activity across cortical depth depended on stimulation depth, in line with anatomical models. Conclusion: Stimulation in the superficial layers of visual cortex evokes local neural activity with the lowest thresholds, and stimulation in the deep layers evoked the most activity across the cortical column. In conjunction with perceptual reports, these data suggest that the optimal electrode placement for cortical microstimulation prostheses has electrodes positioned in layers 2/3, and at the top of layer 5.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.Objective: (a) Compare operative variables, complications, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with an upper instrumented vertebrae (UIV) of C2 versus C3/4, and (b) assess outcomes based on C2 screw type.Summary Of Background Data: When performing elective posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion (PCLF), spine surgeons must choose the upper instrumented vertebrae (UIV) at the subaxial cervical spine (C3/4) versus C2. Differences in long-term complications and PROs remain unknown.Methods: A single-institution, retrospective cohort study from a prospective registry was conducted. All patients undergoing elective, degenerative PCLF from December 2010 to June 2018 were included. Patients were divided into a UIV of C2 versus C3/4. Groups were 2:1 propensity matched for fusion extending to the thoracic spine. Demographics, operative, perioperative, complications, and 1-year PRO data were collected.Results: One hundred seventeen patients underwent elective PCLF and were successfully propensity matched (39 C2 vs. 78 C3/4). Groups were similar in fusion extending to the thoracic spine (P = 0.588). Expectedly, the C2 group had more levels fused (5.63 ± 1.89) compared with the C3/4 group (4.50 ± 0.91) (P = 0.001). The C2 group had significantly longer operative time (P < 0.001), yet no differences were seen in estimated blood loss (EBL) (P = 0.494) or length of stay (LOS) (P = 0.424). Both groups significantly improved all PROs at 1-year (EQ-5D; NRS-NP/AP; NDI). Both groups had the same percentage of surgical adverse events at 6.8% (P = 1.00). Between C2 screw type, no differences were seen in operative time, EBL, LOS, complications, or PROs.Conclusion: In patients undergoing elective PCLF, those instrumented to C2 had only longer operative times compared with those stopping at C3/4. No differences were seen in EBL, LOS, 1-year PROs, and complications. Type of C2 screw had no impact on outcomes. Purpose The hypothesis of this study was that the pedicle axis (PA) is almost perpendicular to the interlaminar line (ILL) in the sagittal plane of the thoracic vertebrae. The objective of the current study was to define the thoracic lamina–PA inclination in order to verify the right-angle concept and to estimate the safety zones for sagittal inclination during pedicle screw insertion. The authors, to the best of their knowledge, are unaware of previous similar studies. Overview of Literature Based on the study’s observations of different spinal disorders, including deformities, it was noted that following a sagittal cranial–caudal trajectory perpendicular to the ILL and joining the two adjacent thoracic vertebrae would work well at most vertebral levels. Methods This was a retrospective study on the computed tomography (CT) chest scans of patients with no spinal pathologies. The ILL–PA, superior and inferior safe angles of the pedicle screw trajectories, and the exit zone of the screw perpendicular to the ILL were reviewed by two observers via three-dimensional multiplanar reconstruction mode of the Horos DICOM software (https://horosproject.org/ ). Results The CT chest images of 30 consecutive patients (20 males and 10 females) with a mean age of 49.87±15.48 years (range, 24–74 years) were evaluated. The mean ILL–PA angle was almost orthogonal for all levels. This angle ranged between 86.21°±3.01° at D5 and 90.59°±2.72° at D10. The safety zones of the sagittal inclination of the pedicle screws were demonstrated. The results revealed that the least safe angle was when the screw was directed cranially along the middle part of the pedicle between 4.43°±0.75° at D8 and 6.94°±1.19° at D11. Conclusions The results of this study confirmed the ILL–PA angle perpendicularity in the thoracic spine at all levels. The ILL is a useful guide for pedicle screw sagittal inclination.

Introducción y objetivos: Polystichum en Argentina y Chile, comprende 11 especies originadas de los linajes: Sudamericano Austral y Andino. La taxonomía del género es conflictiva debido a la frecuente hibridación, asociada a patrones de especiación reticulada. El presente estudio tiene como objetivos: definir caracteres morfo-anatómicos que contribuyan a la diferenciación de los linajes y a la delimitación de nueve de los taxones que comprenden. M&M: Se realizaron mediciones exomorfológicas y análisis de la anatomía defrondes y rizomas de nueve especies de Polystichum (siete del clado Austral Sudamericano y dos del Andino), usando microscopía óptica. En las especies Australes Sudamericanas se estudiaron 13 caracteres cuantitativos empleando 77 especímenes de herbario, mediante análisis multivariados. Resultados: Los caracteres morfológicos que separan el clado Sudamericano Austral de Polystichum de las especies Andinas analizadas, son: los indusios, las espínulas foliares y el margen de las escamas de rizomas y pecíolos. La forma y división de la lámina, el número de pares de pinnas y la cantidad de ellas con soros, la longitud de las pinnas basales y características anatómicas como: pelos glandulares del indusio, banda circumendodermal y número de meristelas del pecíolo, son rasgos informativos a nivel específico del clado Sudamericano Austral. Conclusiones: Por primera vez, una combinación de atributos anatómicos, morfológicos y morfométricos han permitido separar de manera confiable los nueve Polystichum estudiados, demostrando su valor taxonómico.

Overview of Literature Based on our observations in different spinal disorders including deformities, we noted that following a sagittal (cranial–caudal) trajectory perpendicular to the interlaminar line joining the two adjacent vertebrae would work well in most of the vertebral levels. Methods This was a retrospective study on normal lumbar spine lateral radiographs of patients who presented with low back pain and were reviewed by two observers. Different inclination angles were constructed to estimate the safety zones of the pedicle screws’ sagittal inclination. Results Radiographs of 30 consecutive patients, 25 females and five males, with a mean age of 39.43±11.18 years, were studied. The mean angle of the interlaminar line and the pedicle axis was almost orthogonal at all the levels, with a range of 89.16°–94.63°, which was not affected by the lumbar sagittal profile. The safety zones of the pedicle screws were measured, and they revealed a safe sagittal range of 19.73°–24.40° if the screw was inserted from the pedicle axis, 21.03°–22.59° if inserted from the most cephalic part, and 13.31°–17.03° if inserted from the most caudal part. Conclusions Our results confirmed the perpendicularity of the interlaminar line with the pedicle axis in the lumbar spine at all the levels. The interlaminar line is a useful guide for pedicle screw sagittal inclination.

Study Design This is an observational study of computed tomography (CT) data. Purpose The C1 and C2 laminas in the Malaysian Malay population were analyzed for the feasibility of fitting 3.5-mm laminar screws in a cross configuration. Overview of Literature Morphometric analysis of the C1 and C2 laminas has been performed for various populations but not for the Malaysian Malay population. Methods A total of 330 CT cervical images were measured to establish the bicortical diameter of the C1 and C2 laminas as well as their height and length. The C1 posterior tubercle bicortical diameter and height were also determined from these images. All parameters were measured up to 0.1 mm, and statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 24.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). An independent t -test and the Pearson chi-square test were used to determine the mean difference and screw acceptance. Results The means of the C1 lamina measurements were 5.79±1.19 mm in diameter, 9.76±1.51 mm in height, and 20.70±1.86 mm in length. The means of the measurements of the posterior tubercle were 7.20±1.88 mm in diameter and 10.51±1.68 mm in height. The means of the C2 lamina measurements were 5.74±1.31 mm in diameter, 11.76±1.69 mm in height, and 24.96±2.56 mm in length. The NE possesses universal features: a double lipid bilayer membrane, nuclear pore complexes (NPCs), and continuity with the endoplasmic reticulum, indicating common evolutionary origin. However, levels of specialization between lineages remains unclear, despite distinct mechanisms underpinning various nuclear activities. Several distinct modes of molecular evolution facilitate organellar diversification and to understand which apply to the NE, we exploited proteomic datasets of purified nuclear envelopes from model systems for comparative analysis. We find enrichment of core nuclear functions amongst the widely conserved proteins to be less numerous than lineage-specific cohorts, but enriched in core nuclear functions. This, together with consideration of additional evidence, suggests that, despite a common origin, the NE has evolved as a highly diverse organelle with significant lineage-specific functionality.

Background: A retrospective study compared the results of a lamina with spinous process (LSP) and an iliac graft (IG) as bone grafts in single-segment lumbar pyogenic spondylodiscitis (LPS) through one-stage-posterior-only approach with radical debridement and instrumentation.Methods: A LSP was placed in 17 patients (group A), and an IG was implemented in 20 patients (group B). The surgery time, surgery hemorrhage, hospital stay, drainage, and follow-up (FU) were recorded and compared. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) level, visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), segmental angle, intervertebral height and bony fusion time were compared preoperatively and at the final FU.Results: All patients were followed-up for a mean of 27.94 ± 2.35 months in group A and 30.29 ± 1.89 months in group B, without a difference. The mean age was younger in group A than in group B (P < 0.05). The surgery time, surgery hemorrhage, and hospitalization cost were lower in group A than in group B (P < 0.05), except for the hospital stay and drainage time. 10 patients in group A had fever and 12 patients in group B. The ESR, CRP level, VAS and ODI scores were significantly decreased, and no significant differences were found between the groups at the final FU. The distribution of bacterial agents in blood culture was 1 case of Aerobacter cloacae, 2 of Staphylococcus aureus, 2 of Escherichia coli, and 1 of Streptococcus viridis in group A and 1 of S. aureus, 1 of Staphylococcus warneri and 2 of Klebsiella pneumoniae in group B. Pyogenic infection was observed in the pathological findings of all patients. No significant difference was found in the mean segmental angle or mean intervertebral height preoperation and at the final FU.Conclusion: The use of LSP could be an effective bone grafting for surgical management for the LPS while surgery is proposed as a good management strategy for single-segment LPS in carefully selected patients. The main area of the Jiaoshiba anticline of the Fuling shale gas field was taken as the research object, laboratory rock mechanical experiments and direct shear experiments were conducted to clarify the mechanical anisotropy characteristics and parameters of rock samples with rich beddings. Based on the experimental results, a 3D fracture propagation model of the target reservoir taking mechanical anisotropy, weak bedding plane and vertical stress difference into account was established by the discrete element method to analyze distribution patterns of hydraulic fractures under different bedding densities, mechanical properties, and fracturing engineering parameters (including perforation clusters, injection rates and fracturing fluid viscosity). The research results show that considering the influence of the weak bedding plane and longitudinal stress difference, the interlayer stress difference 3–4 MPa in the study area can control the fracture height within the zone of stress barrier, and the fracture height is less than 40 m. If the influence of the weak bedding plane is not considered, the simulation result of fracture height is obviously higher. Although the opening of high-density bedding fractures increases the complexity of hydraulic fractures, it significantly limited the propagation of fracture height. By reducing the number of clusters, increasing the injection rate, and increasing the volume and proportion of high-viscosity fracturing fluid in the pad stage, the restriction on fracture height due to the bedding plane and vertical stress difference can be reduced, and the longitudinal propagation of fractures can be promoted. The fracture propagation model was used to simulate one stage of Well A in Fuling shale gas field, and the simulation results were consistent with the micro-seismic monitoring results.

In eukaryotic cells, the nuclear envelope (NE) is a membrane partition between the nucleus and the cytoplasm to compartmentalize nuclear contents. It plays an important role in facilitating nuclear functions including transcription, DNA replication and repair. In mammalian cells, the NE breaks down and then reforms during cell division, and in interphase it is restored shortly after the NE rupture induced by mechanical force. In this way, the partitioning effect is regulated through dynamic processes throughout the cell cycle. A failure in rebuilding the NE structure triggers the mixing of nuclear and cytoplasmic contents, leading to catastrophic consequences for the nuclear functions. Whereas the precise details of molecular mechanisms for NE reformation during cell division and NE restoration in interphase are still being investigated, here, we mostly focus on mammalian cells to describe key aspects that have been identified and to discuss the crosstalk between them.

The cell nucleus is best known as the container of the genome. Its envelope provides a barrier for passive macromolecule diffusion, which enhances the control of gene expression. As its largest and stiffest organelle, the nucleus also defines the minimal space requirements of a cell. Internal or external pressures that deform a cell to its physical limits cause a corresponding nuclear deformation. Evidence is consolidating that the nucleus, in addition to its genetic functions, serves as a physical sensing device for critical cell body deformation. Nuclear mechanotransduction allows cells to adapt their acute behaviors, mechanical stability, paracrine signaling, and fate to their physical surroundings. This review summarizes the basic chemical and mechanical properties of nuclear components, and how these properties are thought to be utilized for mechanosensing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on thin-section, argon-ion polished large-area imaging and nano-CT scanning data, the reservoir characteristics and genetic mechanisms of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi shale layers with different laminae and laminae combinations in the Sichuan Basin were examined. It is found that the shale has two kinds of laminae, clayey lamina and silty lamina, which are different in single lamina thickness, composition, pore type and structure, plane porosity and pore size distribution. The clayey laminae are about 100 μm thick each, over 15% in organic matter content, over 70% in quartz content, and higher in organic pore ratio and plane porosity. They have abundant bedding fractures and organic matter and organic pores connecting with each other to form a network. In contrast, the silty laminae are about 50 μm thick each, 5% to 15% in organic matter content, over 50% in carbonate content, higher in inorganic pore ratio, undeveloped in bedding fracture, and have organic matter and organic pores disconnected from each other. The formation of mud lamina and silt lamina may be related to the flourish of silicon-rich organisms. The mud lamina is formed during the intermittent period, and silt lamina is formed during the bloom period of silicon-rich organisms. The mud laminae and silt laminae can combine into three types of assemblages: strip-shaped silt, gradating sand-mud and sand-mud thin interlayers. The strip-shaped silt assemblage has the highest porosity and horizontal/vertical permeability ratio, followed by the gradating sand-mud assemblage and sand-mud thin interlayer assemblage. The difference in the content ratio of the mud laminae to silt laminae results in the difference in the horizontal/vertical permeability ratio.

The results of the study of English oak (Quercus robur L.) plus trees based on the morphological features of their leaves, acorns, and peduncles are presented. Samples were collected from both plus trees in forest stands and clones in clonal archive of English oak in Vinnytsia Region. In total, 41 trees were analyzed by 7 features of their leaves and 30 of those trees – by 9 morphological features of their acorns and peduncles. A point assessment was used for nonmetric indicators. To compare plus trees by morphological features, the graphical method of morphotypes image representation with the usage of radar charts is suggested. Given that absolute indicators may depend on the year’s weather conditions, only relative indicators assessed in points were used to plot charts. The average indices for the trees as well as the variability level between them are determined. The most variable features were identified and offered to use for clone identification. It has been suggested that 8 plus trees whose leaves’ base is rounded are the hybrids of English and sessile oaks. It is confirmed that all the studied plus trees of Vinnytsia origin differed in one or several morphological features of their leaves, acorns, or peduncles. However, two plus trees of Odesa origin were similar in their leaves’ characteristics and two clones of Vinnytsia origin were similar in their acorns and peduncles’ features. It is noted that the use of morphological indicators of leaves and reproductive organs, taken as a whole, allows obtaining a rather complete description of a plus tree or its clone, and the usage of the graphical method allows determining the difference and similarity of individuals and their groups. Graphic images of morphotypes given as radar charts can be used to compare individuals, their groups, populations, variants in both progeny test and provenance trial, so to identify clones in clonal seed orchards.

The functional organization of the plant nuclear envelope is gaining increasing attention through new connections made between nuclear envelope-associated proteins and important plant biological processes. Animal nuclear envelope proteins play roles in nuclear morphology, nuclear anchoring and movement, chromatin tethering and mechanical signaling. However, how these roles translate to functionality in a broader biological context is often not well understood. A surprising number of plant nuclear envelope-associated proteins are plant-unique, suggesting that separate functionalities evolved after the split of Opisthokonta and Streptophyta. Significant progress has now been made in discovering broader biological roles of plant nuclear envelope proteins, increasing the number of known plant nuclear envelope proteins, and connecting known proteins to chromatin organization, gene expression, and the regulation of nuclear calcium. The interaction of viruses with the plant nuclear envelope is another emerging theme. Here, we survey the recent developments in this still relatively new, yet rapidly advancing field.
