Increased nitrogen and acidifying deposition negatively affect biogeochemical cycles and nutrient stoichiometry, particularly in oligotrophic habitats. In heathlands, management aims to mitigate effects of deposition by topsoil removal (sod‐cutting) or by liming to increase soil pH. However, these management efforts may further exacerbate macro‐ and micronutrient stoichiometric mismatch, with cascading effects on heathland insects.Here, we investigate the physiological mechanisms by which deposition and management affect insects, focusing on nutrient uptake and excretion. We combined a phosphorus (P) addition and liming experiment in previously sod‐cut heathland with laboratory‐rearing experiments using the field cricket (Gryllus campestris L., 1) as a model species. We hypothesized that P addition would benefit cricket performance by reducing food N:P ratio. Conversely, we hypothesized that liming would reduce performance by decreasing food Mn:Mg and/or Fe:Mg ratios.Elemental uptake efficiency, consumption and reproduction, as well as cricket field density, were significantly higher under increased P availability, confirming insect P limitation in the field. Liming decreased food Mn:Mg ratio and reduced reproductive success, eliminating any beneficial effects of P addition. Moreover, cricket stoichiometry better explained growth rates than the amount of food consumed. The best model highlighted cricket N and Mn content, with increasing N content negatively influencing growth, while the opposite was true for Mn. We found no support for liming‐induced Fe limitation.We propose that both P and Mn limit crickets independently. Specifically, P limitation affects growth via reduced ribosomal content, and Mn limitation impacts growth by limiting arginase activity and hence restricting the recycling of amino acids.Our study shows that restoration management can fail to restore habitat quality for insects and may even amplify mismatches in macro and micronutrient stoichiometry. To address this, the addition of not only P but also Mn may be required as follow‐up management, but reducing N‐emission remains imperative as this removes the need for disruptive management interventions. Groundwater-fed fens are known sources of methane ( CH4) emissions to the atmosphere, and these are known to be mediated by the vegetation. In a fen located in the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia, we assessed the effects of a cushion plant ( Eriocaulon schimperi) and a sedge ( Carex monostachya) on rhizosphere biogeochemistry., Methane and CO2 concentrations and pH were measured in pore-water at different depths in the profile. Redox potentials and NaCl-extractable element concentrations were analysed in soil samples from sites dominated by either E. schimperii or C. monostachya. Nutrient and element concentration were analysed in plant tissues., At Carex-dominated sites, CH4 concentrations increased from 70 μmol·l−1 at a depth of 10 cm to 130 μmol·l−1 at a depth of 100 cm. CH4 concentrations at Eriocaulon-dominated sites were almost zero (<1 μmol·l−1) to a depth of 100 cm. Simultaneously, soil redox potentials and CO2 concentrations were higher at Eriocaulon-dominated sites, indicating a low potential for CH4 production and a high potential for CH4 oxidation., Eriocaulon schimperi displayed a root investment strategy to cope with the harsh environment, similar to the cushion plant Astelia pumila in Patagonian bogs. This strategy is characterised by high root/shoot ratios, high root porosity and density under high redox conditions. Enhanced soil ammonium () concentrations in wetlands often lead to graminoid dominance, but species composition is highly variable. Although is readily taken up as a nutrient, several wetland species are known to be sensitive to high concentrations or even suffer toxicity, particularly at low soil pH. More knowledge about differential graminoid responses to high availability in relation to soil pH can help to better understand vegetation changes. The responses of two wetland graminoids, Juncus acutiflorus and Carex disticha, to high (2 mmol·l−1) versus control (20 μmol·l−1) concentrations were tested in a controlled hydroponic set up, at two pH values (4 and 6). A high concentration did not change total biomass for these species at either pH, but increased C allocation to shoots and increased P uptake, leading to K and Ca limitation, depending on pH treatment. More than 50% of N taken up by C. disticha was invested in N-rich amino acids with decreasing C:N ratio, but only 10% for J. acutiflorus. Although both species appeared to be well adapted to high loadings in the short term, C. disticha showed higher classic detoxifying responses that are early warning indicators for decreased tolerance in the long term. In general, the efficient aboveground biomass allocation, P uptake and N detoxification explain the competitive strength of wetland graminoids at the expense of overall biodiversity at high loading. Peatlands play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle due to their large C storage potential. Their C sequestration rates, however, highly vary depending on climatic and geohydrological conditions. Transitional mires are often characterised by floating peat with infiltration of buffered groundwater or surface water. Sphagnum mosses grow on top, producing recalcitrant organic matter and fuelling large C stocks. As Sphagnum species strongly differ in their tolerance to the higher pH in these mires, their species composition can be expected to influence C dynamics in transitional mires. We therefore experimentally determined growth and net C sequestration rates for four different Sphagnum species (Sphagnum squarrosum, S. palustre, S. fallax and S. magellanicum) in aquaria, with floating peat influenced by the infiltration of buffered water. Surprisingly, even though the first three species increased their biomass, the moss-covered peat still showed a net efflux of CO2 that was up to 3 times higher than that of bare peat. This species-dependent C release could be explained by Sphagnum's active lowering of the pH, which triggers the chemical release of CO2 from bicarbonate. Our results clearly illustrate that high Sphagnum biomass production may still coincide with high C emission. These counterintuitive C dynamics in mire succession seem to be the result of both species- and biomass-dependent acidification and buffered water infiltration. In a laboratory experiment, different iron salts (FeCl2, FeCl3, FeSO4) and Fe2O3 were added to a phosphate enriched silty loam sediment in order to study their effect on phosphate mobilisation. Phosphate concentrations in sediment pore water were not reduced by the addition of Fe2O3. Addition of both iron chlorides, however, resulted in a strong decrease of phosphate levels in sediment pore water. A similar but less pronounced effect was caused by the addition of iron as iron(II) sulphate. Sulphate appears to counteract the immobilisation of phosphate brought about by iron(II). Phosphate release from the sediment appeared to be determined by the iron/phosphate ratio in thesediment pore water. The addition of Fe2O3 barely affected the phosphate release from the sediment whereas the addition of iron salts was effective in preventing phosphate release. In recent decades, SO42- concentrations have increased in groundwater and surface water of freshwater wetlands. For many minerotrophic peatlands, S originating from SO42--polluted groundwater and surface water is a more significant source of SO42- than the actual atmosphericdeposition of S compounds. Lowered groundwater tables in wetlands, as a result of either natural or anthropogenic desiccation, may cause acidification because of concomitant geochemical oxidation processes.The impact of the enhanced availability of reduced S compounds, due to preceding SO42- pollution, on these processes was tested in a mesocosm experiment, using soil cores including vegetation from a mesotrophic wet meadow. The soils had been maintained in waterlogged condition for seven months, using two environmentally relevant SO42- concentrations (2 and 4 mmol L-1). The groundwater table was reduced in two successive steps: 10 cm below soil surface, and complete desiccation.Control pretreated soils did not show a decrease in soil pH during desiccation, due to adequate buffering by bicarbonate. However, both SO42--pretreated groups showed a significant drop in pH (from 6.5 to 4.5) caused by additional sulfide oxidation, leading to high SO42- concentrations (10 and 16 mmol L-1, respectively). Cation exchange and acidification-related solubilization processes induced the mobilization of base cations and potentially phytotoxic metals like Al. Nutrientconcentrations in soil moisture were influenced strongly by SO42- pretreatment, showing distinct patterns for P, N and K. Therefore, S polluted groundwater and surface water may severely increase the sensitivity of wetlands to desiccation. The results are discussed in relation to wetland management. Seagrasses have declined at a global scale due to light reduction and toxicity events, caused by eutrophication and increased sediment loading. Although several studies have tested effects of light reduction and toxicants on seagrasses, there is at present no information available on their interacting effects. In a full-factorial 5-day laboratory experiment, we studied short-term interactive effects of light conditions, pH and reduced nitrogen (NH(x)) in the water layer, mimicking pulses of river discharge, on the tropical early successional species Halodule uninervis and the late successional species Thalassia hemprichii. In contrast to recent results reported for the temperate species Zostera marina, increased NH(x) supply did not affect leaf mortality or photochemical efficiency in H. uninervis and in 7 out of 8 treatments for T. hemprichii. However, both tropical species demonstrated striking differences in nitrogen accumulation, free amino acid composition and free NH₃ accumulation. The increase in tissue nitrogen content was two times higher for H. uninervis than for T. hemprichii. Nitrogen stored as free amino acids (especially asparagine) only increased in H. uninervis. High pH only affected T. hemprichii, but only when not shaded, by doubling its free NH₃ concentrations, concomitantly decreasing its photosynthetic efficiency. Our results indicate that the early successional H. uninervis has higher tolerance to high NH(x) loads as compared to the late successional T. hemprichii. H. uninervis was better able to avoid toxic internal NH(x) levels by further assimilating glutamine into asparagine in contrast to T. hemprichii. Moreover, both tropical species seem to cope much better with high NH(x) than the temperate Z. marina. In remote, tropical areas human influences increase, potentially threatening pristine seagrass systems. We aim (i) to provide a bench-mark for a near-pristine seagrass system in an archipelago in East Kalimantan, by quantifying a large spectrum of abiotic and biotic properties in seagrass meadows and (ii) to identify early warning indicators for river sediment and nutrient loading, by comparing the seagrass meadow properties over a gradient with varying river influence. Abiotic properties of water column, pore water and sediment were less suitable indicators for increased sediment and nutrient loading than seagrass properties. Seagrass meadows strongly responded to higher sediment and nutrient loads and proximity to the coast by decreasing seagrass cover, standing stock, number of seagrass species, changing species composition and shifts in tissue contents. Our study confirms that nutrient loads are more important than water nutrient concentrations. We identify seagrass system variables that are suitable indicators for sediment and nutrient loading, also in rapid survey scenarios with once-only measurements., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
