The combined use of moisturizers and topical anti-inflammatory drugs is essential for alleviating atopic dermatitis. We have developed a topical anti-inflammatory drug with a steroid and a moisturizer with heparinoid, both in lamellar structure-based formulations containing synthetic pseudo-ceramides. Here, assessed the efficacy of this combination in the treatment of atopic dermatitis.Methods: We included 22 patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis and subjected them to a seven-week treatment with the test formulations, followed by a four-week post-treatment period.Results: Clinical findings and the quality of life of participants remarkably improved after one week of treatment. Furthermore, skin hydration and transepidermal water loss considerably improved at weeks one and three, respectively. The Cer [NP]/[NS] ratio, an indicator of epidermal turnover, substantially increased during the treatment period and remained elevated even thereafter. The improvement in stratum corneum function was distinctive in participants with lower barrier function.Conclusion: These findings indicated that the combined use of the anti-inflammatory drug and moisturizer, both in lamellar structure-based formulations, is effective in treating atopic dermatitis in patients with fragile barrier function.Keywords: base formulations, lamellar structure, steroid, heparinoid, barrier function, TEWL

Abstract Superwetting aerogel is a promising alternative for the remediation of emulsified oily wastewater for its high porosity combined with extreme wettability enabled high separation performances to emulsion wastewater. However, it remains challenging for superwetting aerogels to accomplish high-performance dual separation to surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions with high stability. Herein, an environmentally benign superamphiphilic composite aerogel was prepared by a green synthesis route that relied on the utilization of natural amphiphilic biomass. Collagen fibers (CFs) were utilized to construct the three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular skeleton of aerogel to provide high storage capacity of water/oil and outstanding capillary effect to boost the mass transfer. The two-dimensional (2D) lamellar structure of gelatin (Gel) was further grown on the skeleton of CFs aerogel to play the role for simultaneously enhanced demulsifying capability and spreading of emulsions. The as-prepared superamphiphilic aerogel enabled the separation of highly stable surfactant-stabilized O/W and W/O emulsions with high separation efficiency and flux. Excellent recycling performances and anti-fouling performance were also confirmed. Our investigations therefore demonstrated that the structural engineering of superamphiphilic aerogel is a promising way to realize high-performance dual separation of surfactant-stabilized O/W and W/O emulsion wastewater. Improving the synergy between strength and ductility of medium carbon steel, a multi-scale lamellar structure was developed via hot water quenching and warm rolling at different temperatures. The multi-scale lamellar structure is composed of banded proeutectoid ferrite phase, fine equiaxed ferrite and cementite. The average sizes of subgrains and grains of warm rolled samples at 550 °C is 0.53 μm and 2.3 μm, respectively. When the rolling temperature went up, the fraction of HAGBs increased while the fraction of LAGBs decreased. It is found that the dislocations gradually localized from uniformity with increasing rolling temperature. When the rolling temperature was 650 °C, an obvious substructure was formed, and a large proportion of cementite was spheroidized. The best combination of strength and uniform elongation was obtained by rolling at 550 °C with tensile strength of about 1.2 GPa. In-situ high-energy X-ray study showed that the loads of ferrites with different orientations were similar in the elastic stage, and the stress distribution after yield was significantly different. It is considered that LAGBs strengthening accounts for more than 35%. The strengthening mechanism was verified by in-situ high energy X-ray, and the accuracy of multiscale-LAGBs strengthening theory was verified.

Abstract A key property of the human cornea is to maintain its curvature and consequently its refraction capability despite daily changes in intraocular pressure. This is closely related to the multiscale structure of the corneal stroma, which consists of 1–3 µm-thick stacked lamellae made of thin collagen fibrils. Nevertheless, the distribution, size, and orientation of these lamellae along the depth of the cornea are poorly characterized up to now. In this study, we use second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy to visualize the collagen distribution over the full depth of 10 intact and unstained human corneas (500–600 µm thick). We take advantage of the small coherence length in epi-detection to axially resolve the lamellae while maintaining the corneal physiological curvature. Moreover, as raw epi-detected SHG images are spatially homogenous because of the sub-wavelength size of stromal collagen fibrils, we use a polarimetric approach to measure the collagen orientation in every voxel. After a careful validation of this approach, we show that the collagen lamellae (i) are mostly oriented along the inferior–superior axis in the anterior stroma and along the nasal-temporal axis in the posterior stroma, with a gradual shift in between and (ii) exhibit more disorder in the anterior stroma. These results represent the first quantitative characterization of the lamellar structure of the human cornea continuously along its entire thickness with micrometric resolution. It also shows the unique potential of P-SHG microscopy for imaging of collagen distribution in thick dense tissues.

A suitable heat treatment in the Mg97Gd2Zn1 (at.%) alloy in the as-cast condition results, after extrusion at high temperature, in a two-phase lamellar microstructure consisting of magnesium grains with thin lamellar shape precipitates and long fibers of the 14H-Long-Period Stacking Ordered (LPSO) phase elongated in the extrusion direction. The magnesium matrix is not fully recrystallized and highly oriented coarse non-dynamically recrystallized (non-DRXed) grains (17% volume fraction) elongated along the extrusion direction remain in the material. The deformation mechanisms of the extruded alloy have been studied measuring the evolution of the internal strains during in situ tension and compression tests using synchrotron diffraction radiation. The data demonstrate that the macroscopic yield stress is governed by the activation of the basal slip system in the randomly oriented equiaxed dynamic recrystallized (DRXed) grains. Non-DRXed grains, due to their strong texture, are favored oriented for the activation of tensile twinning. However, the presence of lamellar-shape precipitates strongly delays the propagation of lenticular thin twins through these highly oriented grains and they have no effect on the onset of the plastic deformation. Therefore, the tension–compression asymmetry is low since the plasticity mechanism is independent of the stress mode.

In this study, the silane coupling agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) was used to cross-link graphene oxide (GO) to large-sized films, and further to prepare nacre-like structure graphene/aluminum (Al) composites. The results show that APS was successfully grafted onto the GO, forming large continuous GO films, which were then attached to the surface of the Al flakes by semi-powder metallurgy. After hot pressing, the graphene/Al composites had a lamellar structure consisted of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and Al. In addition, the interface was well bonded without defects and Al4C3 phase. Compared with the pure Al prepared under the same condition, the compressive strength, maximum compression ratio and hardness of the 0.15 wt.% graphene/Al composites increased by 58%, 23% and 64.8%, respectively. The approach of cross-linking GO through chemical modification can be applied to the design of other bioinspired materials.
