Abstract

An asymmetric moissanite anvil cellis used to study aqueous solutionsof ammonium iodide at pressures up to 10 kbar. The index of refractionis measured using the rotating Fabry–Perot technique, withan accuracy of approximately 1%. The mass density and molar volumeof the solutions are estimated using the measured index values, andthe molar volume is used to predict the pressure dependence of thesolubility. The solubility derived from the index of refraction measurementsis shown to agree with that which is determined by direct observationof the onset of crystallization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Fire Retardant Halogen−Antimony−Clay Synergism in Polypropylene Layered Silicate Nanocomposites

Abstract

Nanocomposites of polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride with organically modified clays have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Their combustion behavior has been evaluated using oxygen consumption cone calorimetry. Synergy is observed between the nanocomposite formed and conventional vapor phase fire retardants, such as the combination of decabromodiphenyloxide and antimony oxide. The presence of bromine and antimony does not affect the heat release rate curves of the virgin polymer.

37. Fire Properties of Polystyrene−Clay Nanocomposites

Abstract

Polystyrene−clay nanocomposites have been prepared using a bulk polymerization technique. Three new “onium” salts have been used to prepare the nanocomposites, two are functionalized ammonium salts while the third is a phosphonium salt. By TGA/FTIR, both ammonium and phosphonium treatments have been shown to degrade by a Hofmann elimination mechanism at elevated temperatures. TGA/FTIR showed that the phosphonium treatment is the most thermally stable treatment when compared to the two ammonium salts. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, strength and elongation at break, as a measure of the mechanical properties, thermogravimetric analysis, and cone calorimetry. The onset temperature of the degradation is increased by about 50 °C and the peak heat release rate is reduced by 27−58%, depending upon the amount of clay that is present. The mass loss rates are also significantly reduced in the presence of the clay.

39. Comparison of SnBr4and di‐n‐butyl tin diacetate as laser‐assisted chemical vapor deposition precursors for SnO2‐based gas sensors

Abstract

Laser‐assisted chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) was utilized to produce SnO2films from SnBr4plus air, O2or N2O. SnO2films were successfully generated using either 222 or 308 nm laser pulses but there was evidence for film contamination when using less than 60 mJ/pulse laser energies at 222 nm. Films were characterized using ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy; the spectra of films with impurities resembled the spectrum of SnBr4. AFM images were obtained which indicated that this LCVD route produced small and fairly uniform SnO2grains which were 50–100 nm in size. Multiphoton ionization spectroscopy was used to verify that the dissociation of a film dopant precursor, copper(II) acetate, produced gas‐phase copper atoms under conditions similar to those used in film deposition experiments. The deposition of SnO2from SnBr4plus an oxidant was found to be more efficient than from di‐n‐butyl tin diacetate but films produced via this new LCVD route, including those doped with copper, were found to be much less sensitive in preliminary gas‐sensing screening. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
