Abstract Plastic poses a significant environmental impact due to its chemical resilience, leading to prolonged and degradation times and resulting in widespread adverse effects on global flora and fauna. Cutinases are essential enzymes in the biodegradation process of synthetic polymers like polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which recognized organisms can break down. Here, we used molecular dynamics and binding free energy calculations to explore the interaction of nine synthetic polymers, including PET, with Cutinase from Fusarium oxysporum (FoCut). According to our findings, the polymers poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) can bind to the Cutinase enzyme from F. oxysporum, indicating potential biodegradation activity for these polymers. PET exhibited the highest binding affinity (− 34.26 kcal/mol). Besides PET, the polymers PHBH, PBS, PBAT, and PCL also demonstrated significant affinities for the FoCut enzyme, with binding values of − 18.44, − 29.71, − 22.78, and − 22.26 kcal/mol, respectively. Additionally, analysis of the phylogenetic tree of cutinases produced by different organisms demonstrated that even though the organisms belong to different kingdoms, the cutinase from F. oxysporum (FoCut) showed biological similarity in its activity in degrading polymers with the cutinase enzyme from the bacterium Kineococcus radiotolerans and the fungus Moniliophthora roreri. Furthermore, the phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the PETase enzyme has a very high similarity with the bacterial cutinase enzyme than with the fungal cutinase, therefore demonstrating that the PETase enzyme from Ideonella sakaiensis can easily be a modified bacterial cutinase enzyme that created a unique feature in biodegrading only the pet polymer through an evolutionary process due to its environment and its biochemical need for carbon. Our data demonstrate that bacterial cutinase enzymes have the same common ancestor as the PETase enzyme. Therefore, cutinases and PETase are interconnected through their biological similarity in biodegrading polymers. We demonstrated that important conserved regions, such as the Ser-Asp-His catalytic triad, exist in the enzyme’s catalytic site and that all Cut enzymes from different organisms have the same region to couple with the polymer structures.

Despite the huge potential of aquaculture in the Amazon, several producers have abandoned the activity due to a lack of assistance, technology, and innovation. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify factors that have contributed to the withdrawal of aquaculturists from the municipality of ‘Vigia de Nazaré’, state of Pará (Northern Region of Brazil). This case study took place in 2022 through a quanti-qualitative survey, applying structured questionnaires to former aquaculturists. A total of 30 fish farms were investigated, with 11 of them being abandoned. They are distributed across 10 rural communities that have developed fish farming, with ‘Vila de Itapuá’ (18.2%) being the most representative. When active, fish farming was practiced by men (100%) aged between 51 to 60 years (54.5%) with an incomplete primary education (100%), who carried out the activity for an average of 5 years (81.8%), quitting fish farming between the years 2019 and 2020 (72.7%). All former aquaculturists owned small properties, with excavated ponds in an extensive system and used family labor. The absence of technical assistance and the high cost of feed were pointed out as the main problems in the production chain. It is worth noting that the monoculture of Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) accounted for 63.6% of the species produced in rural communities. In conclusion, former aquaculturists express the desire to return to fish farming due to its socio-economic importance. For this, government actions supporting technical assistance and advanced studies in fish nutrition by educational, research, and extension institutions are necessary.

Introduction Post-COVID-19 condition, or syndrome, also known as long COVID, is an infection-associated chronic condition that can develop after a SARS-CoV-2 infection and last at least 3 months to years. Despite representing a high burden for the Unified Health System (SUS), which has affected millions of Brazilians, it has received limited attention in Brazil. Prevalence studies to date have failed to include a broad representation of the population, and there has been insufficient exploration of the impact on people’s lives and the burden of and barriers to accessing health services. This article presents the research protocol for the quantitative component of a mixed methods project to produce evidence to inform SUS’s provision of care for long COVID. The protocol was designed to study long COVID in SUS patients hospitalised for COVID-19 in a large city in Southeast Brazil to capture symptoms and factors associated with the syndrome, effects on quality of life and employment, health needs, use of health services and barriers to accessing necessary healthcare.Methods and analysis An ambidirectional cohort study to capture data retrospectively and prospectively from adults previously discharged from SUS hospitals for COVID-19. The study involves up to two telephone surveys with the patients or proxies selected from a sampling plan for population estimates. Survey questions include baseline and follow-up data on demographic, socioeconomic, comorbidities, work status, health-related quality of life, vaccination status, long COVID symptoms, healthcare needs, use and barriers to access. Descriptive and appropriate multivariable analyses will be employed.Ethics and dissemination The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committees of participant institutions and by the Brazilian National Research Ethics Commission. All participants provided verbal consent. We plan to publish articles in scientific journals and multimedia resources for SUS professionals and the general population.

Este estudo busca caracterizar a violência contra idosos na Região Metropolitana de Belém, Pará. Trata-se de uma pesquisa quantitativa, exploratória, descritiva e documental, realizada a partir de dados da Secretaria de Inteligência e Análise Criminal do estado do Pará, no período de 2016 a 2020, com a análise de oito variáveis, considerando pessoas com ≤ 60 anos. A violência financeira foi a mais praticada, representando 40,01% dos casos; 2019 foi o ano em que mais se teve notificações, com 1.196 denúncias; segunda-feira (17,70%), terça-feira (15,18%) e quarta-feira (15,36%), foram os dias da semana de mais registros de violência; a parte da manhã foi o turno de maior ocorrência (40,64%); a via pública foi o principal local onde a violência foi cometida (44,58%), seguida pela residência (31,99%). O estudo indica que existe a necessidade de investigar mais sobre o problema na capital, pois é onde há maior ocorrência de denúncias e casos de violência.

Introdução: O alongamento tem sido comumente utilizado para incrementar a amplitude de movimento articular e a força muscular. Algumas evidências mostram que o alongamento pode promover efeitos deletérios no desempenho da força muscular. Entretanto, alguns estudos elucidam que o alongamento, quando aplicado nos músculos antagonistas, pode incrementar o desempenho da força dos agonistas. Objetivo: Investigar os efeitos agudos de diferentes volumes (duração de aplicação) de alongamento estático (AE) de músculos antagonistas, inter-séries, no volume total de repetições no exercício remada aberta sentada, em homens treinados. Métodos: Participaram 10 voluntários e selecionados por conveniência. Foram realizadas seis visitas com intervalos de 48 horas entre elas. A entrada nos protocolos experimentais, antes da execução da remada aberta sentada, foi aleatória e realizada em quatro dias; 1) Grupo método tradicional (GTRAD) – sem alongamento prévio; 2) AE com duração de 20s (G20); 3) AE com duração de 40s (G40) e 4) AE com duração de 60s (G60). Resultados: Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os métodos de AE aplicados sobre o volume total de repetições (p=0,257; =1,476). Conclusão: A utilização dos exercícios de alongamento estático de músculos antagonistas, entre as séries, independentemente do volume, parece não promover efeitos deletérios no desempenho de força de músculos agonistas. Portanto, baseado em tais achados, especula-se que essa pode ser uma boa estratégia a ser utilizada quando o objetivo for treinar força e flexibilidade na mesma sessão de treino, sem efeitos deletérios no desempenho da força muscular e gasto adicional de tempo da sessão.

Abstract Africa’s paleo-climate change represents an “ecological black-box” along the evolutionary timeline of spoken language; a vocal hominid went in and, millions of years later, out came a verbal human. It is unknown whether or how a shift from forested, dense habitats towards drier, open ones affected hominid vocal communication, potentially setting stage for speech evolution. To recreate how arboreal proto-vowels and proto-consonants would have interacted with a new ecology at ground level, we assessed how a series of orangutan voiceless consonant-like and voiced vowel-like calls travelled across the savannah. Vowel-like calls performed poorly in comparison to their counterparts. Only consonant-like calls afforded effective perceptibility beyond 100 m distance without requiring repetition, as is characteristic of loud calling behaviour in nonhuman primates, typically composed by vowel-like calls. Results show that proto-consonants in human ancestors may have enhanced reliability of distance vocal communication across a canopy-to-ground ecotone. The ecological settings and soundscapes experienced by human ancestors may have had a more profound impact on the emergence and shape of spoken language than previously recognized.

Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa realizada em 2021 que teve como objetivo analisar a aprendizagem gerada pela leitura de História em Quadrinhos (HQ) sobre o assunto Números Irracionais com alunos de Ensino Médio. O processo metodológico envolveu um Experimento Didático por meio da aplicação de uma leitura em HQ com uma amostra de 6 alunos do Ensino Médio, juntamente com testes de verificação (pré-teste e pós-teste) para constatar a eficácia do recurso na aprendizagem dos estudantes quanto aos Números Irracionais. A análise dos resultados (desempenho dos alunos em suas respostas) ocorreu pela comparação entre os dados do pré-teste com os dados do pós-teste. A comparação indicou que o Experimento Didático, por meio da leitura da HQ em questão, conseguiu promover a aprendizagem de Números Irracionais, pois o desempenho dos alunos teve um aumento bastante significativo após a aplicação do mesmo.

Introdução: A ocorrência de doença renal crônica (DRC) vem aumentando no mundo em decorrência dos processos de transição demográfica e epidemiológica, da expectativa de vida e do não controle de doenças crônicas, como o diabetes mellitus (DM). Assim o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a prevalência e os fatores associados à DRC em pacientes diabéticos. Método: Trata-se de um estudo transversal realizado com diabéticos cadastrados nas Estratégias de Saúde da Família (ESF), na zona urbana de Rio Branco, Acre, em 2019. A DRC foi definida por TFG < 60 ml/1,72m², estimada a partir da fórmula Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), ou presença de albuminúria > 29 mg/g. Medidas de associação foram estimadas por regressão logística, com grau de confiança de 95%. Resultados: A prevalência de DRC foi de 40,0% nos diabéticos. Observou-se associação estatisticamente significativa nos pacientes diabéticos entre DRC e tempo de tratamento superior da 10 anos (1,74; IC95%: 1,01; 3,02) e de diagnóstico de DM (1,87; IC95%: 1,05; 3,33), após ajuste. Conclusão: A DRC apresenta alta prevalência nos diabéticos, evidenciando a necessidade de medidas em saúde pública para detecção precoce e prevenção da sua progressão.

Animal communication has long been thought to be subject to pressures and constraints associated with social relationships. However, our understanding of how the nature and quality of social relationships relates to the use and evolution of communication is limited by a lack of directly comparable methods across multiple levels of analysis. Here, we analysed observational data from 111 wild groups belonging to 26 non-human primate species, to test how vocal communication relates to dominance style (the strictness with which a dominance hierarchy is enforced, ranging from 'despotic' to 'tolerant'). At the individual-level, we found that dominant individuals who were more tolerant vocalized at a higher rate than their despotic counterparts. This indicates that tolerance within a relationship may place pressure on the dominant partner to communicate more during social interactions. At the species-level, however, despotic species exhibited a larger repertoire of hierarchy-related vocalizations than their tolerant counterparts. Findings suggest primate signals are used and evolve in tandem with the nature of interactions that characterize individuals' social relationships.

Recursive procedures that allow placing a vocal signal inside another of a similar kind provide a neuro-computational blueprint for syntax and phonology in spoken language and human song. There are, however, no known vocal sequences among nonhuman primates arranged in self-embedded patterns that evince vocal recursion or potential incipient or evolutionary transitional forms thereof, suggesting a neuro-cognitive transformation exclusive to humans. Here, we uncover that wild flanged male orangutan long calls feature rhythmically isochronous call sequences nested within isochronous call sequences, consistent with two hierarchical strata. Remarkably, three temporally and acoustically distinct call rhythms in the lower stratum were not related to the overarching rhythm at the higher stratum by any low multiples, which suggests that these recursive structures were neither the result of parallel non-hierarchical procedures nor anatomical artifacts of bodily constraints or resonances. Findings represent a case of temporally recursive hominid vocal combinatorics in the absence of syntax, semantics, phonology, or music. Second-order combinatorics, ‘sequences within sequences’, involving hierarchically organized and cyclically structured vocal sounds in ancient hominids may have preluded the evolution of recursion in modern language-able humans.

Homógrafos interlinguísticos são palavras que possuem ortografia idêntica, mas significados distintos entre duas ou mais línguas. Estes estímulos são frequentemente utilizados para avaliar o processamento léxico-semântico em bilíngues e multilíngues. Entretanto, um desafio das pesquisas sobre este tema consiste na preparação das listas de estímulos, havendo carência de materiais disponíveis para avaliar trilíngues com combinações de línguas específicas. O presente estudo teve como objetivo elaborar duas listas de estímulos contendo homógrafos interlinguísticos entre as línguas Inglês-Alemão e Inglês-Português para investigar a coativação semântica-lexical por meio de uma tarefa de julgamento semântico. Os estímulos foram caracterizados quanto à sua frequência por milhão, concretude e número de letras. Por meio de escala likert de 7 pontos, 32 indivíduos bilíngues português-inglês julgaram a associação semântica entre pares de palavras em inglês contendo primes homógrafos e primes controles não-homógrafos e palavras alvo não-homógrafas, associadas ou não semanticamente com os primes. Como resultado, obtivemos um total de 258 pares de palavras em inglês, sendo: 50% de pares associados e 50% de pares não-associados semanticamente na língua inglesa. Entre eles, 46 pares apresentam primes homógrafos Inglês-Alemão, 40 homógrafos Inglês-Português e 162 consistem de pares-controles (primes não-homógrafos). Descrevemos o processo de preparação da tarefa e a disponibilizamos para investigações em estudos com trilíngues português-inglês-alemão tendo como língua alvo da tarefa o inglês.
