We summarize the results of numerical simulations of colliding gas-rich disk galaxies in which the impact velocity is set parallel to the spin axes of the two galaxies. The effects of varying the impact speed are studied with particular attention to the resulting gaseous structures and shockwave patterns, and the time needed to produce these structures. The simulations employ an N-body treatment of the stars and dark matter, together with an SPH treatment of the gas, in which all components of the models are gravitationally active. The results indicate that for such impact geometries, collisions can lead to the very rapid formation of a central, rapidly rotating, dense gas disk, and that in all cases extensive star formation is predicted by the very high gas densities and prevalence of shocks, both in the nucleus and out in the galactic disks. As the dense nucleus is forming, gas and stars are dispersed over very large volumes, and only fall back towards the nucleus over long times. Colliding galaxies are excellent laboratories for studying galactic evolution and global star formation. Computer simulations of galaxy collisions, in which at least one galaxy has a significant gaseous component, show the production of density enhancements and shock waves in the interstellar medium. These high-density regions coincide with the locations of recent, large-scale star formation in observations of some real colliding galaxies. Thus, combined n-body/hydrodynamic computer simulations can be used to explore the history and conditions of star forming regions in colliding galaxies. The galaxy system Arp 119 (CPG 29) contains a southern member, Arp 119S (Mrk 984), that has an extremely disturbed appearance, and a northern member, Arp 119N, a gas-poor elliptical. The morphology of both members can be fit well by a simulation in which a gas-rich disk galaxy has been impacted by an equal mass elliptical that had a trajectory approximately perpendicular to the plane of the disk and passed through the disk slightly off-center. We compare multi-wavelength observations of the Arp 119 system with a combined n-body/SPH simulation of colliding galaxies. We present a brief overview of some recent observations of colliding galaxies and relevant numerical simulations. We have obtained CO(1-0) observations for a sample of 37 interacting galaxy systems, chosen from a parent sample of optically-selected interacting galaxies. The sample observed here spans a large range of interaction strengths and star formation rates (SFR). Using the standard CO-to-H2 conversion factor we find that the interacting galaxies are, on average, marginally more rich in molecular gas than a comparison sample of isolated spiral galaxies, having mean H2/LB and H2/HI ratios 20-40% higher than isolated spirals. The interacting galaxies also have a mean LIR/MH2 ratio that is a factor of ~1.3 higher than the isolated galaxies. There is a strong correlation between relative H2 content and SFRs, indicating that the level of interaction-induced star formation activity is very dependent upon the the available gas supply. Some galaxies, however, have moderate amounts of H2 but much lower than normal SFRs. Therefore molecular gas is a necessary, but not sufficient, prerequisite for star formation. There is also a strong correlation between interaction strength and both SFR and relative H2 content. If the increase in H2 content is real, there must be a substantial conversion of HI to H2 gas taking place in the strongest interacting systems. At least some portion of this apparent increase, however, could be due to non-standard CO-to-H2 conversion factors. A reduction in the conversion factor by amounts consistent with that applicable to ultraluminous infrared galaxies would completely account for the systematic increase in derived H2 content as a function of interaction strength. Such a change could not, however, account for the total range of relative H2 content as a function of SFR. In this paper we demonstrate for the first time the connection between the spatial and temporal progression of star formation and the changing locations of the very dense regions in the gas of a massive disk galaxy (NGC 1144) in the aftermath of its collision with a massive elliptical (NGC 1143). These two galaxies form the combined object Arp 118, a collisional ring galaxy system. The results of 3D, time-dependent, numerical simulations of the behavior of the gas, stars, and dark matter of a disk galaxy and the stars and dark matter in an elliptical during a collision are compared with multiwavelength observations of Arp 118. The collision that took place approximately 22 Myr ago generated a strong, non-linear density wave in the stars and gas in the disk of NGC 1144, causing the gas to became clumped on a large scale. This wave produced a series of superstarclusters along arcs and rings that emanate from the central point of impact in the disk. The locations of these star forming regions match those of the regions of increased gas density predicted the time sequence of models. The models also predict the large velocity gradients observed across the disk of NGC 1144. We derive analytic expressions, using the impulse and epicycle approximations, which describe the kinematic response of a disk galaxy following a collision with a second spherical galaxy which collides perpendicular to, but not through the center of, the disk. This model can reporduce the morphologies found in n-body experiments in which distant encounters produce two-armed spiral patterns and more central collisions produce rings in the disk galaxy, thereby confirming that simple kinematics can be used to describe the early evolution of these systems. Application of this procedure provides a convenient method with which to conduct parameter studies of these collisions. Comparison of the kinematic description with a fully self-gravitating, three-dimensional n-body/gasdynamics computer model shows that the disk galaxy's response is initially well represented by the kinematic model but that the self-gravity of the disk becomes important at longer times after the collision. The flows of gas and stars decouple from one another where stellar orbits cross, leaving regions of elevated gas density behind as the stars move freely past each other. If star formation rates are enhanced in these regions of high gas density, active star formation could be taking place where there is no corresponding dense feature in the old stellar population.

We present some results from three dimensional computer simulations of collisions between models of equal mass galaxies, one of which is a rotating, disk galaxy containing both gas and stars and the other is an elliptical containing stars only. We use fully self consistent models in which the halo mass is 2.5 times that of the disk. In the experiments we have varied the impact parameter between zero (head on) and 0.9R (where R is the radius of the disk), for impacts perpendicular to the disk plane. The calculations were performed on a Cray 2 computer using a combined N-body/smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) program. The results show the development of complicated flows and shock structures in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the disk and the propagation outwards of a density wave in both the stars and the gas. The collisional nature of the gas results in a sharper ring than obtained for the star particles, and the development of high volume densities and shocks.
