Boron nitride nano-platelets have been functionalized with oleylamine using a simple method without ultrasonication. The functionalization is effective with the formation of a coordination bonds between the boron nitride nano-platelets and the oleylamine molecules. The oleylamine functionalization allows for the production of 25% by weight loaded polyamide 6 – boron nitride composites having higher mechanical properties (15% tensile strength increase) and better through-plane thermal conductivity (0.85 to 0.99 W/m·K) with respect to the untreated samples. A better particle-matrix interaction is confirmed by SEM imaging and rheological analysis. The injection moulding process determines a filler orientation which influences the thermal conductivity. This work focuses on the replacement of mineral oils with bio-based waste cooking oils in rubber compounding. Two different waste cooking oils from potatoes and chicken frying process were analyzed by means of chemical and rheological tests to evaluate the chemical composition, the oxidative stability and the viscosity. Waste oils have been introduced in elastomeric compounds as substitute for typical processing aids (i.e. lubricants). Cure kinetics of rubber compounds was studied by rheological characterization. Mechanical properties of vulcanized samples were determined by means of tensile tests, hardness tests and dynamic mechanical analysis. The waste oils showed a rheological behavior very similar to the mineral oils conventionally employed in rubber manufacturing leading to almost the same processability of the resulting compound. The waste oils did not significantly affect the vulcanization kinetics of the rubber compound, as expected for conventional lubricants. Waste cooking oils and mineral oil show analogous influence on mechanical properties of cured compounds. At increasing oil content, the elongation at break and the tensile strength increased whereas the values of Elastic Modulus at 100% strain, the Storage Modulus and Shore A Hardness decreased with respect to the oil-free sample. TiO2 coatings on AA6082 aluminium alloy were obtained at low temperature (80 and 100°C) by the sol-gel dip-coating technique starting from titanium tetra-isopropoxide solution in ethyl alcohol. The preparation was carried out in the presence of acetic acid with both functions of catalyst and chelating agent. The curing temperatures used for these coatings are between 80 and 100°C, low enough to make such coatings suitable to incorporate additives such as organic inhibitors or polymeric nanoparticles. The coated samples were characterised by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compact coatings with a thickness of 500 nm, consisting of amorphous and nearly stoichiometric titanium dioxide, were obtained. EIS results revealed an effective corrosion protection of the substrate for more than 120 h of immersion in 3.5 wt-% NaCl aqueous solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Several metals and alloys are susceptible to corrosion attack and this usually implies the accurate selection of a specific material depending on the working conditions and the characteristics of the environment to which it will be exposed to. However, it could represent a restriction at the same time because a limited range of materials can be practically considered. In addition, they could be also characterized by unsuitable properties for the intended application and high costs. To address this issue, polymeric coatings exhibit high potentiality to be a valid alternative to toxic chromates, allowing to deal with the most appropriate metallic materials and affordable deposition procedures. In this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibrous coating was successfully collected onto aluminum alloy-6082 by means of electrospinning technique. The anticorrosion performance of the final system has been evaluated in 3 wt % NaCl solution by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). To avoid PVA disintegration in aqueous environment, several crosslinking procedures were assessed using glyoxal. The two most promising ones (120°C for 60 min and 150°C for 15 min) were then considered for a further investigation. Crosslinked PVA mats showed improved properties as compared to the as-spun case, as demonstrated by mechanical and thermal analyses. Electrochemical tests revealed that crosslinked coatings can protect aluminum substrates against corrosion, especially for the electrospun PVA coating treated at 120°C. ABSTRACT The possibility of using electrospinning to deposit, and simultaneously electrically pole, polymeric mats containing nonlinear optical (NLO) molecules is studied. Disperse Red 1 (DR1) chromophore dispersed into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) fibers is chosen as test system. Aligned fibers of DR1/PMMA are deposited by means of the rotating collector electrospinning technique. The processing parameters are optimized to obtain an oriented texture of fibers and the NLO activity is characterized by means of second harmonic generation measurements. Comparison with spin coating and corona poling samples of the same material is discussed. The results point toward a low efficiency of chromophore orientation for the electrospun samples in comparison to the poled ones. The paper presents the obtention and characterization of Portland cement mortars with limestone filler and nano-calcite additions. The nano-calcite was obtained by the injection of CO2 in a nano-Ca(OH)2 suspension. The resulted nano-CaCO3 presents different morphologies, i.e., polyhedral and needle like crystals, depending on the initial Ca(OH)2 concentration of the suspension. The formation of calcium carbonate in suspensions was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), complex thermal analysis (DTA-TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM and HRTEM). This demonstrates the viability of this method to successfully sequestrate CO2 in cement-based materials. The use of this type of nano-CaCO3 in mortar formulations based on PC does not adversely modify the initial and final setting time of cements; for all studied pastes, the setting time decreases with increase of calcium carbonate content (irrespective of the particle size). Specific hydrated phases formed by Portland cement hydration were observed in all mortars, with limestone filler additions or nano-CaCO3, irrespective of curing time. The hardened mortars with calcium carbonate additions (in adequate amounts) can reach the same mechanical strengths as reference (Portland cement mortar). The addition of nano-CaCO3 in the raw mix increases the mechanical strengths, especially at shorter hardening periods (3 days). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The formulation of innovative transparent hydrorepellent coatings is strongly motivated in order to satisfy the market request and necessity to improve the cleanability of the sanitarywares. A lot of attention is devoted to the use of cheap precursors, low temperature synthesis process and industrial scalability potentiality. In this framework, in the present paper the set-up of the deposition of modified SiO2 coatings on glazed ceramic supports by spraying technique was reported. Several solutions were formulated using as precursor tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and co-precursor methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) in different molar ratios (i.e. 50:50, 25:75, 75:25), in suitable solvents and mixture of solvents (i.e. H2O, ethanol). The influence of the process parameters (i.e. precursors ratio, solvents, catalyser, annealing temperature) on the properties of the produced coatings was deeply investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential analyses (TG–DTA), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Vickers microhardness. Their hydrophobic behaviour was tested by the measurements of the static water contact angles and the chemical and stain resistance by the conformity to some tests of the standard UNI 4543. The obtained coatings were amorphous, homogeneous, uniform, thin (average thickness 300 nm), crack-free, leading to an improved hardness value of the glazed ceramic support (4.47 GPa vs 3.68 GPa for the coated and uncoated substrates, respectively), and allowed to improve both the hydrophobic behaviour and the chemical and stains resistance of the glazed sanitaryware supports, on the basis of the standard UNI 4543. The best hydrophobic performances were revealed in the case of coatings prepared starting from acidic catalysis derived precursor solutions. Moreover, the highest water contact angle values were detected for lower temperatures annealing, due to the methyl groups preservation, in agreement with the FT-IR and TG–DTA findings.
