A virtual ward service was piloted to deliver “hospital-at-home” services by community nurses and geriatricians to frail older patients immediately after their discharge from hospital to reduce emergency services utilization.Objectives: This study examined the impacts of the virtual ward service on changes in the patients’ emergency attendance and medical readmissions, and their quality of life (QOL).Methods: A matched-control quasi-experimental study was conducted at four hospitals, with three providing the virtual ward service (intervention) and one providing the usual community nursing care (control). Subjects in the intervention group were those who are at high risk of readmission and who are supported by home carers recruited from the three hospitals providing the virtual ward service. Matched control patients were those recruited from the hospital providing usual care. Outcome measures include emergency attendance and medical readmission in the past 90 days as identified from medical records, and patient-reported QOL as measured by the modified Quality-of-Life Concerns in the End of Life Questionnaire (Chinese version). Wilcoxon signed-rank tests compared the changes in the outcome variables between groups.Results: A total of 39 patients in each of the two groups were recruited. The virtual ward group showed a greater significant reduction in the number of unplanned emergency hospital readmissions (-1.41±1.23 versus -0.77±1.31; P=0.049) and a significant improvement in their overall QOL (n=18; 0.60±0.56 versus 0.07±0.56; P=0.02), but there was no significant difference in the number of emergency attendances (-1.51±1.25 versus -1.08±1.48; P=0.29).Conclusion: The study results support the effectiveness of the virtual ward service in reducing unplanned emergency medical readmissions and in improving the QOL in frail older patients after discharge. RATIONALE: The influence of obesity on the perception of respiratory discomfort during acute bronchoconstriction in asthma is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that the respiratory impairment associated with an increased body mass index (BMI) would predispose to greater perceived symptom intensity during acute airway narrowing. We therefore compared relationships between induced changes in dyspnea intensity and lung function during methacholine (MCh) bronchoprovocation in obese (OBA) and normal-weight (NWA) individuals with asthma of mild to moderate severity. METHODS: High-dose MCh challenge tests to a maximum 50% decrease in FEV(1) were conducted in 51 NWA (BMI, 18.5-24.9 kg/m(2); 29% male) and 45 OBA (BMI, 30.1-51.4 kg/m(2); 33% male) between 20 and 60 years of age. Serial spirometry, inspiratory capacity (IC), plethysmographic end-expiratory lung volume (EELV) and dyspnea intensity using the Borg scale were measured throughout bronchoprovocation. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Spirometry and airway sensitivity were similar in both groups; baseline EELV was lower (P < 0.0005) and IC was higher (P = 0.007) in OBA compared with NWA. From baseline to PC(20), EELV increased more in OBA (20% predicted) than NWA (13% predicted) (P = 0.008) with concomitant greater reductions in IC (P < 0.0005). Dyspnea ratings were not different for a given FEV(1) or IC across groups. By mixed effects regression analysis, relationships between induced dyspnea and changes in lung function parameters were not influenced by BMI, sex, or their interaction. CONCLUSIONS: Perceptual responses to MCh-induced bronchoconstriction and lung hyperinflation were similar in obese and normal-weight individuals with asthma despite significant group differences in baseline lung volumes. Achieving rapid, cost effective, and intelligent identification and quantification of flavonoids is challenging. For fast and uncomplicated flavonoid determination, a sensing platform of smartphone-coupled colorimetric sensor arrays (electronic noses) was developed, relying on the differential competitive inhibition of hesperidin, nobiletin, and tangeretin on the oxidation reactions of nanozymes with a 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine substrate. First, density functional theory calculations predicted the enhanced peroxidase-like activities of CeO 2 nanozymes after doping with Mn, Co, and Fe, which was then confirmed by experiments. The self-designed mobile application, Quick Viewer, enabled a rapid evaluation of the red, green, and blue values of colorimetric images using a multi-hole parallel acquisition strategy. The sensor array based on three channels of CeMn, CeFe, and CeCo was able to discriminate between different flavonoids from various categories, concentrations, mixtures, and the various storage durations of flavonoid-rich Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium through a linear discriminant analysis. Furthermore, the integration of a "segmentation-extraction-regression" deep learning algorithm enabled single-hole images to be obtained by segmenting from a 3 × 4 sensing array to augment the featured information of array images. The MobileNetV3-small neural network was trained on 37,488 single-well images and achieved an excellent predictive capability for flavonoid concentrations (R 2  = 0.97). Finally, MobileNetV3-small was integrated into a smartphone as an application (Intelligent Analysis Master), to achieve the one-click output of three concentrations. Conventional methods for detecting unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) pose challenges for rapid analyses due to the need for complex pretreatment and expensive instruments. Here, we developed an intelligent platform for facile and low-cost analysis of UFAs by combining a smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensor array (CSA) based on MnO 2 nanozymes with "image segmentation-feature extraction" deep learning (ISFE-DL). Density functional theory predictions were validated by doping experiments using Ag, Pd, and Pt, which enhanced the catalytic activity of the MnO 2 nanozymes. A CSA mimicking mammalian olfactory system was constructed with the principle that UFAs competitively inhibit the oxidization of the enzyme substrate, resulting in color changes in the nanozyme-ABTS substrate system. Through linear discriminant analysis coupled with the smartphone App "Quick Viewer" that utilizes multihole parallel acquisition technology, oleic acid (OA), linoleic acid (LA), α-linolenic acid (ALA), and their mixtures were clearly discriminated; various edible vegetable oils, different camellia oils (CAO), and adulterated CAOs were also successfully distinguished. Furthermore, the ISFE-DL method was combined in multicomponent quantitative analysis. The sensing elements of the CSA (3 × 4) were individually segmented for single-hole feature extraction containing information from 38,868 images of three UFAs, thereby allowing for the extraction of more features and augmenting sample size. After training with the MobileNetV3 small model, the determination coefficients of OA, LA, and ALA were 0.9969, 0.9668, and 0.7393, respectively. The model was embedded in the smartphone App "Intelligent Analysis Master" for one-click quantification. We provide an innovative approach for intelligent and efficient qualitative and quantitative analysis of UFAs and other compounds with similar characteristics.

Materials with electromechanical coupling are essential for transducers and acoustic devices as reversible converters between mechanical and electrical energy 1-6 . High electromechanical responses are typically found in materials with strong structural instabilities, conventionally achieved by two strategies-morphotropic phase boundaries 7 and nanoscale structural heterogeneity 8 . Here we demonstrate a different strategy to accomplish ultrahigh electromechanical response by inducing extreme structural instability from competing antiferroelectric and ferroelectric orders. Guided by the phase diagram and theoretical calculations, we designed the coexistence of antiferroelectric orthorhombic and ferroelectric rhombohedral phases in sodium niobate thin films. These films show effective piezoelectric coefficients above 5,000 pm V -1 because of electric-field-induced antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transitions. The ability to perceive color by the retina can be attributed to both its trichromatic photoreceptors and the antagonistic neural wiring known as the opponent process. While neuromorphic sensors have been shown to demonstrate memory and adaptation capabilities, color perception is still challenging due to the intrinsic lack of spectral selectivity in narrow bandgap semiconductors. Furthermore, research on emulating neural wiring is severely lacking. The combination of halide perovskite materials with a tunable bandgap and a novel bipolar photodetector design emulates the efficiency of the retina in processing color information. The stimuli-responsive material is also responsible for maintaining partial color constancy-an adaptation feature. Leveraging the unique enhancement of color contrasts, an in-sensor data compression and edge detection can also be demonstrated. The color perception, chromatic adaptation, and color contrast enhancement make perovskite bipolar photodetectors a unique example where the sensor and neural wiring can be co-developed in conjunction., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) has emerged as a kind of multi-functional green oxidants with extensive industrial utility. Oxidized carbon materials exhibit promises as electrocatalysts in the two-electron (2e - ) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for H 2 O 2 production. However, the precise identification and fabrication of active sites that selectively yield H 2 O 2 present a serious challenge. Herein, a structural engineering strategy is employed to synthesize oxygen-doped carbon quantum dots (o-CQD) for the 2e - ORR. The surface electronic structure of the o-CQDs is systematically modulated by varying isomerization precursors, thereby demonstrating excellent electrocatalyst performance. Notably, o-CQD-3 emerges as the most promising candidate, showcasing a remarkable H 2 O 2 selectivity of 96.2% (n = 2.07) at 0.68 V versus RHE, coupled with a low Tafel diagram of 66.95 mV dec -1 . In the flow cell configuration, o-CQD-3 achieves a H 2 O 2 productivity of 338.7 mmol g catalyst -1 h -1 , maintaining consistent production stability over an impressive 120-hour duration. Utilizing in situ technology and density functional theory calculations, it is unveil that edge sites of o-CQD-3 are facilely functionalized by C-O-C groups under alkaline ORR conditions. Supported nonprecious metal catalysts such as copper (Cu) are promising replacements for Pt-based catalysts for a wide range of energy-related electrochemical reactions. Direct electrochemical deposition is one of the most straightforward and versatile methods to synthesize supported nonprecious metal catalysts. However, further advancement in the design of supported nonprecious metal catalysts requires a detailed mechanistic understanding of the interplay between kinetics and thermodynamics of the deposition phenomena under realistic reaction conditions. Here, we study the electrodeposition of Cu on carbon nanotubes and graphene derivatives under electrochemical conditions using in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By combining real-time imaging, electrochemical measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and finite-element analysis (FEA), we show that low-dimensional support materials, especially carbon nanotubes, are excellent for generating uniform and finely dispersed platinum group metal-(PGM)-free catalysts under mild electrochemical conditions. The electrodeposited Cu on graphene and carbon nanotubes is also observed to show good electrochemical activity toward nitrate reduction reactions (NO 3 RRs), further supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Nitrogen doping plays an important role in guiding nonprecious metal deposition, but its low electrical conductivity may give rise to lower NO 3 RR activity compared to its nondoped analogue. The development of supported nonprecious metals through interfacial and surface engineering for the design of supported catalysts will substantially reduce the demand for precious metals and generate robust catalysts with better durability, thereby presenting opportunities for solving the critical problems in energy storage and electrocatalysis.

Background: Wearable devices have been used extensively both inside and outside of the hospital setting. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in some contexts, there was an increased need to remotely monitor pulse and saturated oxygen for patients due to the lack of staff and bedside monitors., Objective: A prototype of a remote monitoring system using wearable pulse oximeter devices was implemented at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from August to December 2021. The aim of this work was to support the ongoing implementation of the remote monitoring system., Methods: We used an action learning approach with rapid pragmatic methods, including informal discussions and observations as well as a feedback survey form designed based on the technology acceptance model to assess the use and acceptability of the system. Based on these results, we facilitated a meeting using user-centered design principles to explore user needs and ideas about its development in more detail., Results: In total, 21 users filled in the feedback form. The mean technology acceptance model scores ranged from 3.5 (for perceived ease of use) to 4.4 (for attitude) with behavioral intention (3.8) and perceived usefulness (4.2) scoring in between. Those working as nurses scored higher on perceived usefulness, attitude, and behavioral intention than did physicians. Dialysis is an artificial process to remove excess urea toxins from the body through adsorption or conversion. Urea adsorption by emergent 2D materials such as MXenes is one probable approach. Based on density functional theory (DFT) studies, the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x (T = -O- and -OH) MXenes is not optimum for urea adsorption. Therefore, functionalization with 3d metal dopants (Cu, Co, and Ni) is proposed to improve their urea adsorption ability. DFT calculations indicate that oxygen-terminated Ti 3 C 2 O 2 has a much better urea adsorption ability when doped with Cu, Co, and Ni, with adsorption energy ( E ads ) values of -2.11 eV, -1.90 eV and -1.72 eV, respectively. These adsorption energies are much more favourable than that of the undoped one ( E ads = -0.52 eV). To verify the calculation results, MILD Ti 3 C 2 T x , or MXenes synthesized via the safer and easier minimally intensive layer delamination (MILD) method, were utilized to simulate Ti 3 C 2 O 2 since they have -O- termination as the dominant species. Experimentally, the adsorption studies found that low concentration of Cu, Co, and Ni on MILD Ti 3 C 2 T x showed a urea removal efficiency of 21.9%, 6.0% and 0.2%, respectively, much better than 0% removal efficiency of unfunctionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x . Therefore, both DFT calculations and experiments showed that various metal functionalized MXenes have a similar trend for urea adsorption, highlighting the feasibility of using the computational approach to predict urea adsorption and further opening a new promising direction for the urea adsorption. Finally, this study is also the first to examine synergistic effects of metal dopants and surface terminations on MXenes for urea adsorption.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) hydrolase enzymes show promise for enzymatic PET degradation and green recycling of single-use PET vessels representing a major source of global pollution. Their full potential can be unlocked with enzyme engineering to render activities on recalcitrant PET substrates commensurate with cost-effective recycling at scale. Thermostability is a highly desirable property in industrial enzymes, often imparting increased robustness and significantly reducing quantities required. To date, most engineered PET hydrolases show improved thermostability over their parental enzymes. Here, we report engineered thermostable variants of Ideonella sakaiensis PET hydrolase enzyme (IsPETase) developed using two scaffolding strategies. The first employed SpyCatcher-SpyTag technology to covalently cyclize IsPETase, resulting in increased thermostability that was concomitant with reduced turnover of PET substrates compared to native IsPETase. The second approach using a GFP-nanobody fusion protein (vGFP) as a scaffold yielded a construct with a melting temperature of 80°C. This was further increased to 85°C when a thermostable PETase variant (FAST PETase) was scaffolded into vGFP, the highest reported so far for an engineered PET hydrolase derived from IsPETase. Thermostability enhancement using the vGFP scaffold did not compromise activity on PET compared to IsPETase. Multifunctional fiber materials play a key role in the field of smart textiles. Temperature sensing and active thermal management are two important functions of smart fabrics, but few studies have combined both functions in a single fiber material. In this work, we demonstrate a temperature-sensing and in situ heating functionalized conductive polymer microfiber by exploiting its high electrical conductivity and thermoelectric properties. The conductive polymer microfibers were prepared by wet-spinning the PEDOT:PSS aqueous dispersion with ionic liquid additives, which was used to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the final microfibers. The thermoelectric properties of these microfibers were further studied. Due to their excellent flexibility and mechanical properties, these fibers can be easily integrated into commercial fabrics for the manufacture of smart textiles through knitting. We further demonstrated a smart glove with integrated temperature-sensing and in situ heating functions, and further explored thermoelectric fiber-based temperature-sensing array fabric. These works combine the thermoelectric properties and heating function of conductive polymer fibers, providing new insights that enable further development of high-performance, multifunctional wearable smart textiles.

Semi-transparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs) have attracted enormous attention recently due to their potential in building-integrated photovoltaic. To obtain adequate average visible transmittance (AVT), a thin perovskite is commonly employed in ST-PSCs. While the thinner perovskite layer has higher transparency, its light absorption efficiency is reduced, and the device shows lower power conversion efficiency (PCE). In this work, a combination of high-quality transparent conducting layers and surface engineering using 2D-MXene results in a superior PCE. In situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction provides direct evidence that the MXene interlayer retards the perovskite crystallization process and leads to larger perovskite grains with fewer grain boundaries, which are favorable for carrier transport. The interfacial carrier recombination is decreased due to fewer defects in the perovskite. Consequently, the current density of the devices with MXene increased significantly. Also, optimized indium tin oxide provides appreciable transparency and conductivity as the top electrode. The semi-transparent device with a PCE of 14.78% and AVT of over 26.7% (400-800 nm) was successfully obtained, outperforming most reported ST-PSCs. The unencapsulated device maintained 85.58% of its original efficiency after over 1000 h under ambient conditions. This work provides a new strategy to prepare high-efficiency ST-PSCs with remarkable AVT and extended stability.

Singlet fission (SF) materials have been applied in various types of solar cells to pursue higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) beyond the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit. SF implementation in perovskite solar cells has not been successfully realized yet due to the insufficient understanding of the SF/perovskite heterojunctions. In this work, we attempt to elucidate the charge dynamics of an SF/perovskite system by incorporating a well-known SF molecule, TIPS-pentacene, and a triple-cation perovskite Cs 0.05 (FA 0.85 MA 0.15 ) 0.95 PbI 2.55 Br 0.45 , owing to their well-matched energy structures. The transient absorption spectra and kinetic fitting plots suggest an electron-transfer process from the triplet state of TIPS-pentacene to perovskite in the picosecond regime, which increases the carrier density by 20% in the perovskite layer. This work confirms the existence of an electron-transfer process between the SF material and perovskite, providing a pathway to SF-enhanced perovskite solar cells.

Post-combustion flue gas (mainly containing 5-40% CO 2 balanced by N 2 ) accounts for about 60% global CO 2 emission. Rational conversion of flue gas into value-added chemicals is still a formidable challenge. Herein, this work reports a β-Bi 2 O 3 -derived bismuth (OD-Bi) catalyst with surface coordinated oxygen for efficient electroreduction of pure CO 2 , N 2, and flue gas. During pure CO 2 electroreduction, the maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of formate reaches 98.0% and stays above 90% in a broad potential of 600 mV with a long-term stability of 50 h. Additionally, OD-Bi achieves an ammonia (NH 3 ) FE of 18.53% and yield rate of 11.5 µg h -1 mg cat -1 in pure N 2 atmosphere. Noticeably, in simulated flue gas (15% CO 2 balanced by N 2 with trace impurities), a maximum formate FE of 97.3% is delivered within a flow cell, meanwhile above 90% formate FEs are obtained in a wide potential range of 700 mV. In-situ Raman combined with theory calculations reveals that the surface coordinated oxygen species in OD-Bi can drastically activate CO 2 and N 2 molecules by selectively favors the adsorption of *OCHO and *NNH intermediates, respectively. Organic-inorganic halide perovskites are interesting candidates for solar cell and optoelectronic applications owing to their advantageous properties such as a tunable band gap, low material cost, and high charge carrier mobilities. Despite making significant progress, concerns about material stability continue to impede the commercialization of perovskite-based technology. In this article, we investigate the impact of environmental parameters on the alteration of structural properties of MAPbI 3 (CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 ) thin films using microscopy techniques. These characterizations are performed on MAPbI 3 thin films exposed to air, nitrogen, and vacuum environments, the latter being possible by using dedicated air-free transfer setups, after their fabrication into a nitrogen-filled glovebox. We observed that even less than 3 min of air exposure increases the sensitivity to electron beam deterioration and modifies the structural transformation pathway as compared to MAPbI 3 thin films which are not exposed to air. Similarly, the time evolution of the optical responses and the defect formation of both air-exposed and non-air-exposed MAPbI 3 thin films are measured by time-resolved photoluminescence. The formation of defects in the air-exposed MAPbI 3 thin films is first observed by optical techniques at longer timescales, while structural modifications are observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements and supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Based on the complementarity of TEM, XPS, and time-resolved optical measurements, we propose two different degradation mechanism pathways for air-exposed and non-air-exposed MAPbI 3 thin films. We find that when exposed to air, the crystalline structure of MAPbI 3 shows gradual evolution from its initial tetragonal MAPbI 3 structure to PbI 2 through three different stages. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles have highly versatile structural properties that are suitable for a plethora of applications including catalysis, separation, and nanotherapeutics. We report a one-pot synthesis strategy that generates bimodal mesoporous silica nanoparticles via coassembly of a structure-directing Gemini surfactant (C 16-3-16 ) with a tetraethoxysilane/(3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane-derived sol additive. Synthesis temperature enables control of the nanoparticle shape, structure, and mesopore architecture. Variations of the aminosilane/alkylsilane molar ratio further enable programmable adjustments of hollow to core-shell and dense nanoparticle morphologies, bimodal pore sizes, and surface chemistries. The resulting Gemini-directed aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles have excellent carbon dioxide adsorption capacities and antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli . Our results provide an enhanced understanding of the structure formation of multiscale mesoporous inorganic materials that are desirable for numerous applications such as carbon sequestration, water remediation, and biomedical-related applications.

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to ethanol is a promising strategy for global warming mitigation and resource utilization. However, due to the intricacy of C─C coupling and multiple proton-electron transfers, CO 2 -to-ethanol conversion remains a great challenge with low activity and selectivity. Herein, it is reported a P-doped graphene aerogel as a self-supporting electrocatalyst for CO 2 reduction to ethanol. High ethanol Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 48.7% and long stability of 70 h are achieved at -0.8 V RHE . Meanwhile, an outstanding ethanol yield of 14.62 µmol h -1 cm -2 can be obtained, outperforming most reported electrocatalysts. In situ Raman spectra indicate the important role of adsorbed *CO intermediates in CO 2 -to-ethanol conversion. Furthermore, the possible active sites and optimal pathway for ethanol formation are revealed by density functional theory calculations. The graphene zigzag edges with P doping enhance the adsorption of *CO intermediate and increase the coverage of *CO on the catalyst surface, which facilitates the *CO dimerization and boosts the EtOH formation. In addition, the hierarchical pore structure of P-doped graphene aerogels exposes abundant active sites and facilitates mass/charge transfer. Scarcity of natural resources, shifting demographics, climate change, and increasing waste are four major challenges in the quest to feed the exploding world population. These challenges serve as the impetus to harness novel technologies to improve agriculture, productivity, and sustainability. Urban farming has several advantages over conventional farming: higher productivity, improved sustainability, and the ability to provide fresh food all year round. Novel materials are key to accelerating the evolution of urban farming - with their ability to facilitate controlled release of nutrients and pesticides, improved seed health, substrates with better water retention capability, more efficient recycling of agricultural waste, and precise plant health monitoring. Materials science enables environmental sustainability and higher harvest yields in urban farms. Here, Singapore is used as an example of a land-scarce city where urban farming may be the solution for future food production. Potential research directions and challenges in urban farming are highlighted, and how material optimization and innovation drive the development of urban farming to meet national and global food demands is briefly discussed. Background: Liver stiffness (LS) assessed by transient elastography is associated with adverse events in patients with heart failure. However, the predictive value of LS for adverse outcome is uncertain in patients undergoing tricuspid annuloplasty (TA). This study sought to evaluate the prognostic value and reversibility of LS in patients undergoing TA during left-sided valve surgery., Methods and Results: A total of 158 patients who underwent TA were prospectively evaluated. Patients were divided into three groups according to tertile of LS. Adverse outcome was defined as heart failure that required hospital admission or all-cause mortality following TA. The median LS was 13.9 (inter-quartile range 8.1-22.3) kPa and independently correlated positively with tricuspid regurgitation (TR) severity, inferior vena cava diameter and negatively with tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion. During a median follow-up of 31 months, 49 adverse events occurred. Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that LS was an independent predictor of adverse events. Significant improvement in LS at 1-year post-TA (13.1-7.8 kPa, P < 0.01) was noted only in patients who had no adverse events, not in those who experienced heart failure (17.1-14.2 kPa, P = 0.87) and seems to be linked to an absence of TR recurrence., Conclusions: This study demonstrated that LS is predictive of adverse outcome and is reversible in patients undergoing TA without TR recurrence at 1 year. We extracted one-year genomic data (August 2020-July 2021) from GISAID EpiCoV™ database and estimated monthly proportions of 11 SARS-CoV-2 variants in various geographical regions. From continental perspective, Delta VOC predominated in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania, with proportions of 67.58-98.31% in July 2021. In South America, proportion of Delta VOC (23.24%) has been approaching the predominant yet diminishing Gamma VOC (56.86%). We further analyzed monthly data on new COVID-19 cases, new deaths, vaccination status and variant proportions of 6 countries. Delta VOC predominated in all countries except Brazil (Gamma VOC) in July 2021. In most occasions, rise and predominance of Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Zeta variants were accompanied with surges of new cases, especially after the time point of major lineage interchange. The ascending phases of new cases lasted for 1-5 months with 1.69- to 40.63-fold peak growth, whereas new death tolls varied with regional vaccination status. Our data suggested surges of COVID-19 cases might be predicted from variant surveillance data. Despite vaccine breakthroughs by Delta VOC, death tolls were more stable in countries with better immunization coverage. Heavy metal or metalloid contamination is a common problem in soils of urban environments. Their introduction can be due to unpremeditated anthropogenic activities like atmospheric deposition produced by diffuse sources, construction activities and landscape maintenance. Phytoremediation is a rapidly evolving, sustainable approach to remediate the contaminated lands where metals and metalloids are highly persistent in the environment. The present work sets out to determine the level of 12 heavy metals and metalloids (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn) in soil and their accumulation by plant foliage found in nature parks and industrial sites in Singapore. The latter also involve the investigation of the remediation capacity of selected tropical plant species found at the sampling sites. The study is done using digestion and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. Eleven soil sampling sites across Singapore with 300 sampling points were selected, where soil (0-10 cm) and plant foliage samples were collected. Bioconcentration factors were determined to assess the phytoremediation potential of the collected plant species. Toxicity risk of heavy metals were assessed by comparing the target and intervention values from the soil quality guidelines by the Dutch Standard. Results of the study revealed there were regions where levels of heavy metals and metalloids were relatively high and could affect the environment and the health of flora and fauna in Singapore. Our study discovered that there were available tropical plant species (e.g., wildflowers, ferns and shrubs) which could potentially play a significant role in the remediation of contaminated lands that could open up a huge possibility of developing a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way of managing this emerging urban problem. Background: The presence of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is very common in patients with concomitant left-sided valve disease. Recent studies have advocated an additional grading of massive TR that is beyond severe. The present study sought to characterize the spectrum of TR in patients undergoing tricuspid annuloplasty (TA) and to evaluate the prognostic value of TR severity for post-operative outcome following TA., Methods: A total of 176 patients who underwent TA with combined left-sided valve surgery, secondary to rheumatic valvular heart disease, were prospectively evaluated. The severity of TR was quantified by effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA) using the proximal isovelocity surface area method. Patients were categorized as having non-massive TR (EROA < 0.6 cm 2 ) or massive TR (EROA ≥ 0.6 cm 2 ). Adverse outcome was defined as all-cause mortality or heart failure requiring hospital admission following TA., Results: A total of 55 (31%) patients were considered to have massive TR. Patients with massive TR had a greater right ventricular dimension but a smaller left ventricular dimension compared with those with non-massive TR. After a median follow-up of 39 months, 35 adverse events occurred. Cox-regression analysis showed that both continuous EROA and dichotomized EROA (massive vs. non-massive TR) were independently associated with adverse events even after multivariable adjustment. Further, Harrell C index demonstrated that the addition of massive TR provided better discrimination ability of a prediction model to known prognosticators following TA., Conclusions: Massive TR is common and up to 31% of study population had massive TR. Massive TR was associated with adverse outcome in patients undergoing TA. Double-chain amphiphilic compounds, including surfactants and lipids, have broad significance in applications like personal care and biology. A study on the phase structures and their transitions focusing on dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC), used inter alia in hair conditioners, is presented. The phase behaviour is dominated by two bilayer lamellar phases, L β and L α , with "solid" and "melted" alkyl chains, respectively. In particular, the study is focused on the effect of additives of different polarity on the phase transitions and structures. The main techniques used for investigation were differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS). From the WAXS reflections, the distance between the alkyl chains in the bilayers was obtained, and from SAXS, the thicknesses of the surfactant and water layers. The L α phase was found to have a bilayer structure, generally found for most surfactants; a L β phase made up of bilayers with considerable chain tilting and interdigitation was also identified. Depending mainly on the polarity of the additives, their effects on the phase stabilities and structure vary. Compounds like urea have no significant effect, while fatty acids and fatty alcohols have significant effects, but which are quite different depending on the nonpolar part. In most cases, L β and L α phases exist over wide composition ranges; certain additives induce transitions to other phases, which include cubic, reversed hexagonal liquid crystals and bicontinuous liquid phases. For a system containing additives, which induce a significant lowering of the L β -L α transition, we identified the possibility of a triggered phase transition via dilution with water.

The regulation of permeance and selectivity in membrane systems may allow effective relief of conventional energy-intensive separations. Here, pressure-responsive ultrathin membranes (≈100 nm) fabricated by compositing flexible two-dimensional metal-organic framework nanosheets (MONs) with graphene oxide nanosheets for CO 2 separation are reported. By controlling the gas permeation direction to leverage the pressure-responsive phase transition of the MONs, CO 2 -induced gate opening and closing behaviors are observed in the resultant membranes, which are accompanied with the sharp increase of CO 2 permeance (from 173.8 to 1144 gas permeation units) as well as CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivities (from 4.1 to 22.8 and from 4 to 19.6, respectively). The flexible behaviors and separation mechanism are further elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations. Trophoblast stem cell (TSC) is crucial to the formation of placenta in mammals. Histone demethylase JMJD2 (also known as KDM4) family proteins have been previously shown to support self-renewal and differentiation of stem cells. However, their roles in the context of the trophoblast lineage remain unclear. Here, we find that knockdown of Jmjd2b resulted in differentiation of TSCs, suggesting an indispensable role of JMJD2B/KDM4B in maintaining the stemness. Through the integration of transcriptome and ChIP-seq profiling data, we show that JMJD2B is associated with a loss of H3K36me3 in a subset of embryonic lineage genes which are marked by H3K9me3 for stable repression. By characterizing the JMJD2B binding motifs and other transcription factor binding datasets, we discover that JMJD2B forms a protein complex with AP-2 family transcription factor TFAP2C and histone demethylase LSD1. The JMJD2B-TFAP2C-LSD1 complex predominantly occupies active gene promoters, whereas the TFAP2C-LSD1 complex is located at putative enhancers, suggesting that these proteins mediate enhancer-promoter interaction for gene regulation. We conclude that JMJD2B is vital to the TSC transcriptional program and safeguards the trophoblast cell fate via distinctive protein interactors and epigenetic targets.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been a catastrophic burden to global healthcare systems. The fast spread of the etiologic agent, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), highlights the need to identify unknown coronaviruses rapidly for prompt clinical and public health decision making. Moreover, owing to the high mutation rate of RNA viruses, periodic surveillance on emerging variants of key virus components is essential for evaluating the efficacy of antiviral drugs, diagnostic assays and vaccines. These 2 knowledge gaps formed the basis of this study. In the first place, we evaluated the feasibility of characterizing coronaviruses directly from respiratory specimens. We amplified partial RdRP gene, a stable genetic marker of coronaviruses, from a collection of 57 clinical specimens positive for SARS-CoV-2 or other human coronaviruses, and sequenced the amplicons with Nanopore Flongle and MinION, the fastest and the most scalable massively-parallel sequencing platforms to-date. Partial RdRP sequences were successfully amplified and sequenced from 82.46% (47/57) of specimens, ranging from 75 to 100% by virus type, with consensus accuracy of 100% compared with Sanger sequences available (n = 40). In the second part, we further compared 19 SARS-CoV-2 RdRP sequences collected from the first to third waves of COVID-19 outbreak in Hong Kong with 22,173 genomes from GISAID EpiCoV™ database. No single nucleotide variants (SNVs) were found in our sequences, and 125 SNVs were observed from global data, with 56.8% being low-frequency (n = 1-47) missense mutations affecting the rear part of RNA polymerase. Among the 9 SNVs found on 4 conserved domains, the frequency of 15438G > T was highest (n = 34) and was predominantly found in Europe. Our data provided a glimpse into the sequence diversity of a primary antiviral drug and diagnostic target. Further studies are warranted to investigate the significance of these mutations.

We describe a new approach for preparing organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells for electron beam-induced current (EBIC) measurements in plan-view geometry. This method substantially reduces sample preparation artefacts, provides good electrical contact and keeps the preparation steps as close as possible to those for real devices. Our EBIC images were acquired simultaneously with annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy images using a home-made highly sensitive EBIC amplifier. High-angle annular dark-field images and energy dispersive X-ray maps were recorded from the same area immediately afterwards. This allowed the EBIC contrast to be correlated with regions containing N and a deficiency of O. The EBIC contrast was also found to be similar to secondary electron contrast recorded with a scanning electron microscope. By identifying the generation and absorption electron processes, we determine that EBIC cannot be separated from the secondary electron and absorbed currents. Cost-effective material with a rational design is significant for both sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Herein, we report an elaborate yolk-shell FeS 2 @C nanocomposite as a promising material for application in both SIBs and EMW absorption. When applied as an anode material in SIBs, the yolk-shell structure not only facilitates a fast electron transport and shortens Na ion diffusion paths but also eases the huge volume change of FeS 2 during repeated discharge/charge processes. The as-developed FeS 2 @C exhibits a high specific capacity of 616 mA h g -1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g -1 with excellent rate performance. Furthermore, owing to the significant cavity and interfacial effects enabled by yolk-shell structuring, the FeS 2 @C nanocomposite delivers excellent EMW absorption properties with a strong reflection loss (-45 dB with 1.45 mm matching thickness) and a broad 15.4 GHz bandwidth. This work inspires the development of high-performance bifunctional materials.

This study sets out to investigate the effect of the presence of small water-soluble additives on the tunability of the surfactant gel-to-liquid crystalline (L β -L α ) phase transition temperature ( T m ) for a bilayer-forming cationic surfactant and the phase behavior of such surfactant systems on dilution. This is strongly driven by the fact that this type of cationic surfactant has many interesting unanswered scientific questions and has found applications in various areas such as consumer care, the petrochemical industry, food science, etc. The underlying surfactant/additive interactions and the interfacial behavior of lamellar surfactant systems including the surfactant deposition on surfaces can provide new avenues to develop novel product formulations. We have examined dioctadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (DODAC) in the presence of small polar additives, with respect to the phase behavior upon dilution and the deposition on silica. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is used to track the transition temperature, T m , and synchrotron and laboratory-based small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) were used to determine the self-assembled surfactant structure below and above the T m . DSC scans showed that upon dilution the additives could be removed from the surfactant bilayer which in turn tuned the T m . A spontaneous transition from a liquid crystalline (L α ) phase to a gel (L β ) phase on dilution was demonstrated, which indicated that additives could be taken out from the L α phase. By means of in situ null ellipsometry, the deposition of a diluted surfactant L β phase upon replacement of bulk solution by deionized water was followed. This technique enables time-resolved monitoring of the deposited surfactant layer thickness and adsorbed amount, which allows us to understand the deposition on surfaces. Robust layers at least one bilayer-thick were deposited onto the surface and shown to be irreversibly adsorbed due to poor surfactant solvency in water. Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality representing significant financial burden on the health-care system. Early identification and intervention is crucial to maximizing positive outcomes. We studied a quality improvement initiative with the aim of reviewing the initial management of patients with sepsis in Canadian community emergency departments, to identify areas for improving the delivery of sepsis care. We present a retrospective, multicenter, observational study during 2011 to 2015 in the community setting., Methods: We collected data on baseline characteristics, clinical management metrics (triage-to-physician-assessment time, triage-to-lactate-drawn time, triage-to-antibiotic time, and volume of fluids administered within the first 6 hours of triage), and outcomes (intensive care unit [ICU] admission, in-hospital mortality) from a regional database., Results: A total of 2056 patients were analyzed. The median triage-to-physician-assessment time was 50 minutes (interquartile range [IQR]: 25-104), triage-to-lactate-drawn time was 50 minutes (IQR: 63-94), and triage-to-antibiotics time was 129 minutes (IQR: 70-221). The median total amount of fluid administered within 6 hours of triage was 2.0 L (IQR: 1.5-3.0). The ICU admission rate was 36% and in-hospital mortality was 25%. We also observed a higher ICU admission rate (51% vs 24%) and in-hospital mortality (44% vs 14%) in those with higher lactate concentration (≥4 vs ≤2 mmol/L), independent of other sepsis-related parameters., Conclusion: Time-to-physician-assessment, time-to-lactate-drawn, time-to-antibiotics, and fluid resuscitation in community emergency departments could be improved. Future quality improvement interventions are required to optimize management of patients with sepsis. The histone lysine demethylase KDM5 family is implicated in normal development and stem cell maintenance by epigenetic modulation of histone methylation status. Deregulation of the KDM5 family has been reported in various types of cancers, including hematological malignancies. However, their transcriptional regulatory roles in the context of leukemia remain unclear. Here, we find that KDM5B is strongly expressed in normal CD34 + hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cells. Knockdown of KDM5B in K562 CML cells reduced leukemia colony-forming potential. Transcriptome profiling of KDM5B knockdown K562 cells revealed the deregulation of genes involved in myeloid differentiation and Toll-like receptor signaling. Through the integration of transcriptome and ChIP-seq profiling data, we show that KDM5B is enriched at the binding sites of the GATA and AP-1 transcription factor families, suggesting their collaborations in the regulation of transcription. Even though the binding of KDM5B substantially overlapped with H3K4me1 or H3K4me3 mark at gene promoters, only a small subset of the KDM5B targets showed differential expression in association with the histone demethylation activity. By characterizing the interacting proteins in K562 cells, we discovered that KDM5B recruits protein complexes involved in the mRNA processing machinery, implying an alternative epigenetic action mediated by KDM5B in gene regulation. One of key factors to design applicable electron transport layers (ETLs) for perovskite solar cells is the morphology of ETLs since a good morphology would help to facilitate the carrier transport at two interfaces (perovskite\ETL and ETL\cathode). However, one drawback of most organic ETL small molecules is the internal undesired accumulation, which would cause the formation of inappropriate morphology and rough ETL surface. Here, by elaborately designing the side chains of NDI derivatives, the molecular interaction could be modified to achieve the aggregation in different degrees, which would eventually affect the accumulation of molecules and surface qualities of ETLs. By speculating from the comparison between the absorption spectra of solutions and films, the sequence of extent of molecule interaction and aggregation was built among three NDI derivatives, which is further confirmed by direct evidence of atomic force microscopy (AFM) images. Then, carrier exaction abilities are simply studied by steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy. The carrier transport process is also discussed based on cyclic voltammetry, time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and mobility. NDIF1 are proven to have the appropriate internal aggregation to smooth the contact with cathode and low series resistance, and a device performance of 15.6 % is achieved. With the ability of preventing the thermal diffusion of Ag towards the perovskite surface due to the strong interaction between molecules, NDIF2 at high concentration shows the highest fill factor (80 %)., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Background: After primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) in patients with acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is recommended to continue for 1 year. Occasionally, DAPT interruption may be required due to bleeding issues or unplanned surgical procedures., Objective: To systematically evaluate the incidence of DAPT interruption within 1 year after PPCI., Methods and Results: This was a single-centre, retrospective registry study. Consecutive patients with STEMI who underwent PPCI from 2013 to 2017 (N=538) were recruited into the analysis. The primary outcome was the incidence of interruption of DAPT within 1 year from the index PPCI. Secondary outcomes included incidence of bleeding in 1 year and prevalence of high bleeding risk (HBR) criteria at index presentation. Within 1 year, 17.1% (84/490) of post-PPCI survivors needed DAPT interruption and 7.1% (35/490) had major bleeding (Bleeding Academic Research Consortium type 3 or 5). At index presentation, HBR criteria were present in 36.1% (194/538) of patients. On univariate analysis, age, female gender, anaemia, anticoagulation, diabetes, hypertension and being a non-smoker were associated with DAPT interruption. On multivariate analysis, age was the only independent factor to predict DAPT interruption., Conclusion: DAPT interruption was not uncommon after PPCI in patients with STEMI particularly in the elderly.
