The new multimodal reading ecosystem currently contributes to the proposal of forms of mediation that take into account the hybridization of digital and analog paradigms. In this context, illustrated books intended for children can constitute an area of interest, since their discursive and aesthetic codes contribute to the development of multimodal reading strategies and to the positioning of the child reader before the information, at the same time that they generate pleasant reading and knowledge-building experiences. Accordingly, today's publishing market requires a learning process from the mediator in order to develop the corresponding strategies with which to approach children's books. Previous research has focused on the book trailer as a virtual epitext for the promotion of publications, and it has analyzed the identity of this tool to demonstrate its effectiveness in the promotion of reading. Along these lines, and with the purpose of verifying how this tool behaves in the introduction of future teachers to children's books, an intervention is proposed that is based on the creation of book trailers. A total of 860 students from the Early Childhood and Primary Education teaching degree programs participated in the intervention. It included qualitative research that analyzed the documents/epitexts created by the students, written reflections within the framework of this project and the discourse collected "a posteriori" in interviews and discussion groups on the experience. The results reveal the potential that creating book trailers has for introducing teacher trainees to illustrated children's books within the framework of the digital society.

Hirschsprung’s disease (HSCR) is characterized by congenital absence of ganglion cells in the gastrointestinal tract, which leads to impaired defecation, constipation and intestinal obstruction. The current diagnosis of HSCR is based on Rectal Suction Biopsies (RSBs), which could be complex in newborns. Occasionally, there is a delay in diagnosis that can increase the risk of clinical complications. Consequently, there is room for new non-invasive diagnostic methods that are objective, more logistically feasible and also deliver a far earlier base for a potential surgical intervention. In recent years, microRNA (miRNA) has come into the focus as a relevant early marker that could provide more insights into the etiology and progression of diseases. Therefore, in the search of a non-invasive HSCR biomarker, we analyzed miRNA expression in urine samples of HSCR patients. Results from 5 HSCR patients using microarrays, revealed hsa-miR-378 h, hsa-miR-210-5p, hsa-miR-6876-3p, hsa-miR-634 and hsa-miR-6883-3p as the most upregulated miRNAs; while hsa-miR-4443, hsa-miR-22-3p, hsa-miR-4732-5p, hsa-miR-3187-5p, and hsa-miR-371b-5p where the most downregulated miRNAs. Further search in miRNAwalk and miRDB databases showed that certainly most of these dysregulated miRNAs identified target HSCR associated genes, such as RET, GDNF, BDNF, EDN3, EDNRB, ERBB, NRG1, SOX10; and other genes implied in neuronal migration and neurogenesis. Finally, we could also validate some of these miRNA changes in HSCR urine by RT-qPCR. Altogether, our analyzed HSCR cohort presents a dysregulated miRNA expression presents that can be detected in urine. Our findings open the possibility of using specific urine miRNA signatures as non-invasive HSCR diagnosis method in the future.

The anatomy of the pelvis may obscure differences in pelvic tilt, potentially underestimating its correlation with clinical measures. Measuring the total sagittal range of pelvic movement can serve as a reliable indicator of pelvic function. This study assessed the inter- and intra-examiner reliability of the Kinovea® version 0.9.5 and its agreement with the Qualisys System (3D motion capture) for measuring the total pelvic range of movement (ROM) in the sagittal plane, establishing Kinovea®’s validity in standing and sitting positions with 45° of hip flexion. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 13 asymptomatic participants. Pelvic kinematics were recorded using both systems. Pelvic posture, anterior and posterior tilt, and total pelvic ROM in the sagittal plane were analyzed. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) was used to evaluate reliability and validity. Additionally, the technical error of measurement (TEM), relative TEM, standard error of measurement, and minimal detectable change (MDC) were calculated to establish Kinovea®’s accuracy. Kinovea® demonstrated excellent inter- and intra-examiner reliability for total pelvic ROM in standing and sitting measurements (ICC > 0.90), with relative TEM values below 10% and MDC values between 1.60°and 11.20°. Validity showed good-to-excellent ICC values when comparing Kinovea® and the Qualisys System. This finding suggests that Kinovea® is a valid tool for obtaining reproducible measurements of total pelvic ROM in the sagittal plane in standing and sitting positions, demonstrating excellent-to-good inter- and intra-examiner reliability for pelvic kinematics.

This study investigates electromyography activation and force development differences in key lower limb muscles between female football players with previous anterior cruciate ligament injuries compared with healthy players. Twenty-two semi-professional players were divided into ACL-injured (n = 11) and non-injured groups (n = 11). Participants underwent maximal voluntary isometric contractions while electromyography activation, peak and average, and peak torque of force were measured. Results indicated significant differences in electromyography activation patterns between anterior cruciate ligament players and non-injured players, particularly in biceps femoris and gluteus maximus muscles. These differences were also evident when comparing between limbs within anterior cruciate ligament players. Interestingly, both groups exhibited similar peak torque of force during maximal contractions, suggesting a compensatory neuromuscular strategy that supports a return to sport based on kinetic and kinematic factors. However, these findings underscore persistent muscle integration imbalances potentially contributing to the high rate of anterior cruciate ligament reinjury. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of evaluating electromyography activation alongside force development in understanding neuromuscular adaptations post anterior cruciate ligament injury. These insights emphasize the need for comprehensive rehabilitation strategies that address muscle imbalance to mitigate the risk of recurrent anterior cruciate ligament injuries in female football players.

Pregnancy is a particularly vulnerable period for the growing fetus, when exposure to toxic agents, especially in the early phases, can decisively harm embryo development and compromise the future health of the newborn. The inclusion of various chemical substances in personal care products (PCPs) and cosmetic formulations can be associated with disruption and damage to the nervous system. Microplastics, benzophenones, parabens, phthalates and metals are among the most common chemical substances found in cosmetics that have been shown to induce neurotoxic mechanisms. Although cosmetic neurotoxin exposure is believed to be minimal, different exposure scenarios of cosmetics suggest that these neurotoxins remain a threat. Special attention should be paid to early exposure in the first weeks of gestation, when critical processes, like the migration and proliferation of the neural crest derived cells, start to form the ENS. Importantly, cosmetic neurotoxins can cross the placental barrier and affect the future embryo, but they are also secreted in breast milk, so babies remain exposed for longer periods, even after birth. In this review, we explore how neurotoxins contained in cosmetics and PCPs may have a role in the pathogenesis of various neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases and, therefore, also in congenital enteric aganglionosis as well as in postnatal motility disorders. Understanding the mechanisms of these chemicals used in cosmetic formulations and their role in neurotoxicity is crucial to determining the safety of use for cosmetic products during pregnancy.

Hirschsprung’s disease (HSCR, incidence 1/5000 live births) is caused by the failure of neural crest-derived precursors to migrate, survive, proliferate, or differentiate during the embryonic development of the Enteric Nervous System (ENS), which could be disrupted by many factors, including inflammatory processes. The NF-κB family controls several biological processes, including inflammation, neurogenesis, and cell migration. With the aim of studying the potential role of NF-κB in HSCR, we have analyzed the expression of the NF-κB main subunits and other NF-κB-related genes by RT-qPCR in HSCR tissue samples (sub-divided into ganglionic and aganglionic segments). We found decreased gene expression of the NF-κB main subunit RELA but also of NFKBIA, TNFA, TFGBR2, and ERBB3 in the pathologic distal aganglionic segments compared to the proximal ganglionic segments. Moreover, we could also confirm the lower protein expression of RelA/p65 in the aganglionic distal segments by immunofluorescence staining. Further, we show that the expression of RelA/p65 protein in the proximal segments concurs with lymphocyte infiltration in the bowel tissue, indicating a pro-inflammatory activation of p65 in the proximal ganglionic HSCR tissue in the patients analyzed. All in all, our findings suggest that the modulation of NF-κB signaling in the neuro-enteric system does obviously contribute to the pathological effects of HSCR.

The recent proliferation of environmental children’s literature and the growing interest in this type of books by researchers and proponents of ecocriticism could be deemed a byproduct of contemporary concerns regarding environmental sustainability. Considering books for children as more than mere tools for environmental awareness-raising prompts an approach to canonical picturebooks that reveals their ecocritical nature based on the esthetic, multimodal and literary dimensions of these works. This study proposes the analysis of 25 picturebooks by five influential female authors to identify the keys to their ecocritical reading. Indeed, the elements that define literary discourse construction in children’s books (paratextuality, illustration and design, character development and focalization) are precisely those that have proved to be fundamental in this sense. Interpreting these seminal works from an ecocritical vantage point updates them in step with current ecocentric paradigms by promoting a sense of wonder in young readers that leads them to delight in and reflect on nature and the environment.

Introduction: Impairment of both the central and peripheral nervous system is a major cause of mortality and disability. It varies from an affection of the brain to various types of enteric dysganglionosis. Congenital enteric dysganglionosis is characterized by the local absence of intrinsic innervation due to deficits in either migration, proliferation or differentiation of neural stem cells. Despite surgery, children’s quality of life is reduced. Neural stem cell transplantation seems a promising therapeutic approach, requiring huge amounts of cells and multiple approaches to fully colonize the diseased areas completely. A combination of successful expansion and storage of neural stem cells is needed until a sufficient amount of cells is generated. This must be combined with suitable cell transplantation strategies, that cover all the area affected. Cryopreservation provides the possibility to store cells for long time, unfortunately with side effects, i.e., upon vitality.Methods: In this study we investigate the impact of different freezing and thawing protocols (M1-M4) upon enteric neural stem cell survival, protein and gene expression, and cell function.Results: Freezing enteric nervous system derived neurospheres (ENSdN) following slow-freezing protocols (M1-3) resulted in higher survival rates than flash-freezing (M4). RNA expression profiles were least affected by freezing protocols M1/2, whereas the protein expression of ENSdN remained unchanged after treatment with protocol M1 only. Cells treated with the most promising freezing protocol (M1, slow freezing in fetal calf serum plus 10% DMSO) were subsequently investigated using single-cell calcium imaging. Freezing of ENSdN did not alter the increase in intracellular calcium in response to a specific set of stimuli. Single cells could be assigned to functional subgroups according to response patterns and a significant shift towards cells responding to nicotine was observed after freezing.Discussion: The results demonstrate that cryopreservation of ENSdN is possible with reduced viability, only slight changes in protein/gene expression patterns and without an impact on the neuronal function of different enteric nervous system cell subtypes, with the exception of a subtle upregulation of cells expressing nicotinergic acetylcholine receptors. In summary, cryopreservation presents a good method to store sufficient amounts of enteric neural stem cells without neuronal impairment, in order to enable subsequent transplantation of cells into compromised tissues.

Después de situar en su contexto esta decisión, se analiza uno de los casos en los que el rey se apropió de las rentas eclesiásticas, el breve periodo en que estuvo sin cubrir el cargo de abad de Montearagón (agosto-septiembre de 1284). Las cuentas de los bailes locales permiten observar esta apropiación y la transferencia de una parte importante de los ingresos abaciales en favor de algunos nobles para pagarles los gastos y soldadas de su participación en el asedio de Albarracín en esas fechas. Estas cuentas informan, además, sobre las características del gobierno de la Corona de Aragón en estos años y, en particular, sobre el sistema contable y financiero que sostenía el Estado.

Neck pain can be associated with specific conditions, such as neurological disorders, vascular or inflammatory diseases, fractures, herniated discs, etc. However, the majority of neck pain cases cannot be attributed to a specific cause. The objective of this review is to describe the muscle dysfunctions associated with neck pain, as measured by electromyography, and to determine the effectiveness of dry needling in improving these muscular dysfunctions. The research was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, Alcorze, and Google Scholar. The next conclusions have been extracted after the revision of the 65 selected manuscripts. The current scientific evidence supports electromyographic pathological findings in individuals with chronic neck pain, especially during general upper limb movement, repetitive work, violin playing, cervical force, and cervical movement tasks. Dry needling applied to an active myofascial trigger point in the upper trapezius can be suggested as an intervention to enhance the performance in the cranio-cervical flexion. Dry needling applied to latent myofascial trigger points in the upper trapezius after typing tasks in healthy subjects resulted in decreased upper trapezius activity and fatigue in the short term. In women with trapezius myalgia, dry needling applied to the upper trapezius led to a lower increase in electromyography activity compared to no intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En el marco teórico que definen las investigaciones de Wolf (2020), Delgado y col. (2018) y Gil y col. (2020), entre otros, se impone, en lo que a formación de lectores se refiere, la necesidad de combinar paradigmas digitales y analógicos con el fin de desarrollar el "cerebro bialfabetizado" (WOLF, 2020) que la sociedad digital reclama. Se propone, en este artículo, el análisis de un corpus de treinta libros y álbumes ilustrados de no ficción publicados en los últimos quince años con el objetivo de identificar las principales claves de lectura de estas obras. Así la superación de las fronteras entre ficción y no ficción, la información sesgada, la materialidad como eje de construcción del discurso, la lectura fragmentada y no lineal, la importancia de los peritextos, la hibridación de paradigmas y la dimensión cultural son algunos de los rasgos que se desprenden del análisis efectuado. Estos resultados proponen un lector modelo que se explica desde los parámetros de una nueva práctica letrada.

The consumption of vegetables is one of the fundamentals of a healthy diet. The purposes of the present study were to describe the frequency of consumption of vegetables in the general Spanish population and to explore the relations between the consumption of vegetables and sex, age, cohabitation circumstances, educational level, and body mass index (BMI). Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was accomplished based on data from the European Health Survey in Spain (2020). Results: A total of 20,745 (52.1% women) subjects with a median age of 54 years old were included. Only 2.8% of them ate vegetables at least three times a day. The adjusted generalized linear model showed that being a woman increased the odds of consuming vegetables at least three times a day by 1.666 times (p < 0.001). Not cohabiting as a couple decreased the odds by 0.783 (p < 0.001). Having studied at a university increased the odds by 1.812 times (p < 0.001) and possessing a certificate of higher education by 1.408 (p = 0.030). Being overweight decreased the odds by 0.924 (p = 0.006). For every additional year of age, the odds of consuming vegetables at least three times a day increased by 1.3% (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The vast majority of the general Spanish population did not consume an optimal amount of vegetables. Women, people with higher levels of education, and older individuals reported having a more frequent intake of vegetables. Not cohabiting as a couple and being overweight were related to a less frequent intake of vegetables.
