Abstract

Buckling control of space structures using piezoelectric actuators is an emerging area of research. In particular, cylindrical shells present several challenges as they exhibit multiple buckling modes. This work focuses on placement of ring actuators on cylindrical shells exhibiting axisymmetric buckling. A new method based on the characteristic wavelength of the cylindrical shell is proposed for actuator placement. It is shown by means of numerical studies that passive control of these shells shows a distinct advantage over the conventional actuator placement. It is possible to obtain a stiffer load– axial shortening response as well as a peak load enhancement of the shell using the present approach. The results obtained give important insights into the actuator placement problem for cylindrical shells undergoing axisymmetric buckling.

26. Electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis on alpha/beta and theta/beta ratios due to Shirodhara

Abstract

Shirodharais a brain relaxation therapy. The treatment induces a relaxed state with awareness that results in treating neurological conditions like mental stress (depression/anxiety/hypertension) and some of its beneficial side effects are soothing the central nervous system. In this study, Shirodhara with “Ksheerabala thailam” medicinal oil was conducted on 16 subjects and pre-post treatment brain signals were collected using an EEG acquisition tool and it was found that treatment induced relaxation aspects were observed among subjects. Welch's Fast Fourier transform (FFT) was used to analyze the EEG signals in order to obtain power spectral density (PSD) features, which indicated a signal's power dispersed across a range of frequencies. The effectiveness of treatment has been evaluated by examining the spectral power ratios of Alpha/Beta, Theta/Beta in the frontal region of the brain and physiological and psychological parameters.

Abstract

It is difficult to accurately size the defects that are oriented at an angle (that is not normal to the wave) using conventional amplitude based ultrasonic techniques. Since Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is based on the diffraction of ultrasound at defect edges, defect sizing using this technique is amplitude independent. However, most of the TOFD based assessment relies on manual sizing, whose accuracy depends on quality of image and the operator’s experience. Also, the utilization of TOFD for sections less than 15 mm has reportedly several difficulties. In this paper, we report our attempts to size the vertical and inclined defects using an in-house TOFD system built to inspect thin sections (6–10 mm). To improve sizing, automated defect sizing techniques termed Embedded Signal Identification Technique (ESIT) and Point Source Correlation Technique (PSCT) were developed. A ray tracing based model was also developed for a) optimizing the experimental parameters for thin sections, b) interpreting the received signals. Experiments were conducted on 10 mm thick samples with EDM defects and 6–7 mm welded maraging steel samples. The results obtained using manual and automated techniques were compared. Our comparisons lead us to believe that the automated defect sizing techniques can provide accurate and reliable results for thin sections. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents a methodology of design for a circular flexural plate PVDF hydrophone taking into consideration the various design parameters such as acoustical parameters, structural requirement and electromechanical properties of the PVDF. Little attention has been paid in the past on a systematic design of a hydrophone considering the various design parameters. Sensitivity and static pressure capability curves obtained in this work will help the designer in selecting an appropriate design for a given application with specific design constraints. Since the support conditions affect the sensitivity drastically, two bounding conditions, namely, the simply supported and the clamped boundary conditions were considered for the design. Experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the hydrophones constructed using the proposed design methodology. Experimental results of testing the hydrophones both in air and underwater are presented. Results obtained show superiority of the hydrophones constructed using the proposed design methodology. In addition, theoretical calculations made on the designed hydrophone correlate well with the experimental observations. This demonstrates that the proposed methodology can be directly used for design of a hydrophone given the design considerations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
