The patient cohort was assessed for resolution of epithelial defects, ocular surface inflammation, and best-corrected visual acuity pre- and posttreatment. Measurements of ocular surface inflammation and epithelial defect size were assessed using AOS digital imaging software, a validated tool for objective grading of bulbar conjunctival redness and measurement of corneal epithelial defects.Results: A total of 47 applications of sutureless HAMDM on 46 eyes of 46 patients (25 male, 21 female, age 9– 94 years) were assessed across various etiologies for an average of 24.0± 14.1 days. Patients with limbal stem-cell deficiency (n=17), persistent epithelial defects (n=16), neurotrophic corneal disease (n=7), filamentary keratitis (n=2), corneal erosion (n=1), corneal thinning (n=1), ocular surface inflammation (n=1), and traumatic corneal laceration (n=1) were included in the study. Across all patents, 63% of eyes showed complete healing of epithelial defects and 32.6% of eyes showed partial resolution. The average rate of healing (wound closure) was 0.36 mm2 per day across the overall patient cohort, and the rate of healing in cases with complete resolution of epithelial defects was 0.41 mm2 per day. Inflammation across all four quadrants of the ocular surface remained stable. Visual acuity across the patient cohort remained stable (61%) and improved in 26% of patients (0.06± 0.51 logMAR).Conclusion: Sutureless HAMDM application can be accomplished in just a few minutes and effectively treat a range of ocular surface disease in a clinical, nonsurgical setting. Abstract: The sub-luminal phase velocity of electromagnetic waves in free space is generally unobtainable, being closely linked to forbidden faster than light group velocities. The requirement of effective sub-luminal phase-velocity in laser-driven particle acceleration schemes imposes a fundamental limit on the total acceleration achievable in free-space, and necessitates the use of dielectric structures and waveguides for extending the field-particle interaction. Here we demonstrate a new travelling-source and free space propagation approach to overcoming the sub-luminal propagation limits. The approach exploits the relative ease of generating ultrafast optical sources with slow group velocity propagation, and a group-to-phase front conversion through non-linear optical interaction near a material-vacuum boundary. The concept is demonstrated with two terahertz generation processes, non-linear optical rectification and current-surge rectification. The phase velocity is tunable, both above and below vacuum speed of light $c$, and we report measurements of longitudinally polarized electric fields propagating between $0.77c$ and $1.75c$. The ability to scale to multi-MV/m field strengths is demonstrated. Our approach paves the way towards the realization of cheap and compact particle accelerators with unprecedented femtosecond scale control of particles.

The main outcome measures were healing response of PED and time to heal after application of AMDDM.Results: A total of 106 applications of AMDDM were recorded for 81 patients (52 males, 29 females) with a spectrum of different etiologies. Fifty-eight percent of the eyes showed complete healing, and 28% showed partial decrease of the size of PEDs with average treatment length recorded as 22.4± 12.3 days. In patients with limbal stem cell deficiency (n=44; aniridia=12, chemical injury=9, Stevens–Johnson syndrome=10), 50% of PEDs showed complete healing and 27% showed partial healing. In patients with microbial keratitis (n=21) (bacterial: 13, fungal: 4, herpetic: 3, acanthamoeba: 1) 57% of PEDs showed complete healing and 33% were partially healed. In patients with keratoplasty (n=16), 56% of PEDs showed complete healing and 31% were partially healed. Vision remained stable in 59% and improved in 27% of the study the population.Conclusion: AMDDM can be easily applied in the clinical setting and has demonstrated its efficiency as a new tool to treat persistent epithelial defects.Keywords: persistent epithelial defects, amniotic membrane derived dry matrix, suture less amniotic membrane

Patients with pre-existing glaucoma, transient increased IOP within the first 48 hours post-graft, additional post-transplant surgery, or failed to complete one year follow-up were excluded from the study. Ocular hypertension was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation > 21mmHg or ≥ 6mmHg from baseline at any postoperative visit. The study looked at the incidence, risk factors, response to anti-glaucoma treatment, graft failure and best corrected visual acuity.Results: The incidence of post-DSAEK ocular hypertension and glaucoma was 51.9% and 13.6%, respectively. Steroid-induced IOP elevation was the most frequent cause, with an incidence of 38.3%. Risk factors such as pseudophakia (p=0.024) and preoperative IOP> 16 (p=0.003) were found to be associated with post-DSAEK ocular hypertension. Preoperative IOP> 16 had 5.27 times risk of IOP elevation. Eyes with graft dislocation and/or detachment were significantly associated with post-DSAEK glaucoma (p=0.038). There was no negative effect of OHT on visual acuity and graft status.Conclusion: Glaucoma and OHT are common postoperative complications of DSAEK. Although steroid-induced IOP elevation was the most frequent cause, there are other reasons associated with development of post-DSAEK glaucoma, including graft dislocation and detachment. Eyes with preoperative IOP> 16 mm Hg may require a close monitoring of IOP. Abstract: Magnetometry and magnetoresistance measurements in MnSi thin films and rigorous analytical solutions of the micromagnetic equations show that the field-induced unwinding of confined helicoids occurs via discrete steps. A comparison between the magnetometry data and theoretical results shows that finite size effects confine the wavelength and lead to a quantization of the number of turns in the helicoid. We demonstrate a prototypical spintronic device where the magnetic field can push or pull individual turns into a magnetic spring that can be read by electrical means.

METHODS: Here we phenotyped 28 individuals from 17 families with pathogenic FOXP2-only variants (12 loss-of-function, five missense variants; 14 males; aged 2 to 62 years). Health and development (cognitive, motor, social domains) were examined, including speech and language outcomes with the first cross-linguistic analysis of English and German. RESULTS: Speech disorders were prevalent (23/25, 92%) and CAS was most common (22/25, 88%), with similar speech presentations across English and German. Speech was still impaired in adulthood, and some speech sounds (eg, 'th', 'r', 'ch', 'j') were never acquired. Language impairments (21/25, 84%) ranged from mild to severe. Comorbidities included feeding difficulties in infancy (10/26, 38%), fine (13/26, 50%) and gross (13/26, 50%) motor impairment, anxiety (5/27, 19%), depression (6/27, 22%) and sleep disturbance (10/24, 42%). Physical features were common (22/27, 81%) but with no consistent pattern. Cognition ranged from average to mildly impaired and was incongruent with language ability; for example, seven participants with severe language disorder had average non-verbal cognition. CONCLUSIONS: Although we identify an increased prevalence of conditions like anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance, we confirm that the consequences of FOXP2 dysfunction remain relatively specific to speech disorder, as compared with other recently identified monogenic conditions associated with CAS. Thus, our findings reinforce that FOXP2 provides a valuable entry point for examining the neurobiological bases of speech disorder.

10. Faculty experiences and motivations in design thinking teaching and learning

Abstract: Introduction: Design thinking (DT) is a creative, iterative approach to generating solutions that are desirable, feasible, and viable. Given its role in fostering creativity and innovation, a growing number of higher education instructors are teaching DT. Exploring how and what instructors know about DT and why they might teach it could provide critical insight into the ways in which DT is operationalized in higher education teaching and learning. Materials and methods: A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used for data collected from online surveys administered to faculty teaching DT. The survey included items about DT practices, outcomes from DT, demographic characteristics, and course characteristics. Five open-text survey items queried participants about their definition of DT, why they teach DT, and what additional outcomes they observed. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze quantitative items and thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative items. Results: Participants (n = 49) represented various academic ranks, disciplines, types of institutions, and geographic locations. Analyses indicated clear congruence between quantitative and qualitative data. Definitions of DT aligned with well-known models of DT. Motivations for teaching DT included the promotion of personal development, DT proficiency, impact, and interpersonal skill development. Other positive student outcomes observed included increases in enthusiasm, self-awareness, empowerment, optimism, and a sense of belonging. Negative student outcomes included time constraints, teamwork conflicts, and student frustration. Conclusion: Faculty believe that DT leads to highly valuable social innovation skill sets for students. This cross-institutional, multi-disciplinary study provides critical insight into faculty experiences and motivations for teaching DT, offering various strategies for instructors and institutions interested in fostering the uptake of DT within higher education.
