Firefighters are exposed via multi-route exposure to a multitude of chemicals (PAHs, VOCs, flame retardants, dioxins, etc.) that may cause acute and long-term health effects. The dermal absorption of contaminants is a major contributor to the overall exposure and can be reduced by wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. As leather firefighters’ gloves cannot be decontaminated regularly by wet cleaning, many Belgian firefighters wear supplementary undergloves made of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) to protect against the accumulation of toxicants. However, the safety of this practice has been questioned. In this commentary, the current practice and risks are outlined for the first time, assessed by an interdisciplinary working group of the Belgian Superior Health Council. As NBR sticks to the skin more at high temperatures, the contact time on removal will be prolonged, posing an additional risk for deeper burns. However, based on the physicochemical properties of NBR and the existing experience of firefighters and burn centers, it is estimated that such incidents occur relatively rarely in practice. On the other hand, the risk of repeated exposure to contaminated gloves if no undergloves are worn is unacceptable. Despite the slightly increased risk for deeper burns, it is concluded that wearing disposable NBR gloves under regular firefighters’ gloves is an appropriate and effective preventive measure against toxic contamination. This report sheds light on the size and composition of the digital economy in Finland and its impact on the tax gap and tax system. No generally agreed definition of digital economy exists, and only a few prior studies have assessed the size of the digital economy quantitatively. We measured the size of the digital economy by the value added generated by digitally produced goods and services. We first replicated the analysis of the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) using Finnish data by assessing the value added of fully digital products. Secondly, we also took into account in our calculations the value added of partly digital products. Our analysis shows that the share of value added generated by the digital economy in Finland has grown at a relatively slow pace during the 2010s. Our calculations indicate that the digital economy comprised 10.9% of the GDP in Finland in 2017, or over EUR 21 billion euros. We further aimed at assessing the size of the corporate income tax (CIT), the value added tax (VAT) and the personal income tax (PIT) gaps generated by the digital economy in Finland. An attempt to make a full CIT gap analysis failed due to the unavailability of industry-level national accounts data. Data on the accrued VAT from the most recent years was not available but the observations from the earlier years did not reveal tax gaps. Our data collected via a survey targeted at digital freelance workers hints that, in general, Finnish digital freelancers comply with taxation rather well and no notable PIT tax gap is generated.

Tässä oppaassa annetaan ohjeita asuntopalokohteissa työskentelevien ja vierailevien ihmisten kemikaalialtistumisen vähentämiseksi. Ohjeistus perustuu VTT:n ja Työterveyslaitoksen toteuttamaan Palokohteiden savu-, noki- ja kemikaalijäämät ja niiden vaikutukset työturvallisuuteen -tutkimushankkeeseen, jossa selvitettiin asuntopalopaikoilla esiintyviä terveydelle haitallisia yhdisteitä sekä palosaneeraajien, palontutkijoiden, vahinkotarkastajien ja kiinteistön edustajien altistumista niille. Oppaassa kuvataan tulipaloissa syntyviä yhdisteitä, palopaikoilla työskentelevien mahdollisia altistumisreittejä näille kemikaaleille sekä niiden terveydellisiä haittavaikutuksia. Kemikaalialtistumista voidaan vähentää oppaassa esitettävin teknisin keinoin ja henkilösuojaimin. Palokohteissa työskenteleville annetaan suojautumissuositukset, jotka määräytyvät palovahinkojen laajuuden ja työtehtävien laadun mukaan.

VTT ja Työterveyslaitos toteuttivat vuosina 2007-2009 kaksiosaisen hankekokonaisuuden "Palokohteiden savu-, noki- ja kemikaalijäämät ja niiden vaikutukset työturvallisuuteen". Hankekokonaisuudessa tutkittiin asuntopalokohteissa palon jälkeen työskentelevien ihmisten altistumista terveydelle haitallisille yhdisteille ja etsittiin tarkoituksenmukaisia keinoja altistumiselta suojautumiseen. Tulosten perusteella on kehitetty suojavaatetusta ja -varustusta koskeva ohjeistus. Hankekokonaisuuden ensimmäisessä vaiheessa tarkasteltiin palosaneeraajien altistumista ja suojautumiskeinoja laboratoriokokeissa. Ensimmäisen vaiheen tulokset on julkaistu erillisessä raportissa. Tässä raportissa kuvataan hankekokonaisuuden jälkimmäinen vaihe, jossa suoritettiin kaksi täyden mittakaavan palokoetta laboratorio-olosuhteissa sekä kaksi case-tutkimusta. Laboratoriokokeiden tarkoituksena oli arvioida palokohteessa ennen saneeraustyötä vierailevien ihmisten altistumista ja suojautumiskeinoja. Case-tutkimukset toteutettiin todellisten tulipalojen jälkisaneeraustyömailla. Case-tutkimusten tavoitteena oli todentaa hankekokonaisuuden ensimmäisessä vaiheessa suoritettujen laboratoriokokeiden tuloksia käytännön olosuhteissa ja tarkistaa ensimmäisen vaiheen perusteella annetun suojautumissuosituksen tarkoituksenmukaisuus.

Työssä tutkittiin palosaneeraajien altistumista terveydelle haitallisille yhdisteille. Laboratorio-olosuhteissa toteutettiin kaksi mahdollisimman samankaltaista asuntopaloa jäljittelevää palokoetta, joiden jälkeen poltetut tilat saneerattiin normaaleja palosaneerausmenetelmiä käyttäen. Ensimmäinen palo jälkisiivottiin hankkeessa mukana olevien palosaneerausyritysten normaalia suojautumistasoa käyttäen. Toisen palon jälkisiivouksessa käytettiin parannettua, työsuorituksen kannalta tarkoituksenmukaista suojautumistekniikkaa. Saneeraustyön aikana suoritettiin hengitystie-, iho- ja kokonaisaltistumismittauksia. Tutkimustulokset osoittivat, että palon jälkeen palokohteessa työskentelevät ja vierailevat ihmiset voivat altistua syöpävaarallisille PAH-yhdisteille, vaikka huoneistossa olisi suoritettu asianmukainen jälkituuletus. Mitä aiemmin palon jälkeen kohteeseen mennään, sitä tärkeämpää on hengityksensuojaimen käyttö. Hiukkas- ja höyrymäisten PAH-yhdisteiden havaittiin altistavan myös ihon kautta. Käsien kautta tulevan altistumisen vähentämiseksi suojakäsineiden käyttö saneeraustyössä on ehdottoman tarpeellista. Tämän lisäksi käsien pesulla voidaan vähentää altistumista ja käsien kautta välittyvää kontaminaatiota. Lyhytaikahaalarin käytön ei näissä kokeissa havaittu vähentävän koko kehon kautta tapahtuvaa ihoaltistumista, mutta sillä voidaan estää vaatteiden nokeentuminen. Vaatteissa siirtyvien epäpuhtauksien kontaminaatiovaikutukselle voivat altistua paitsi saneeraajat itse myös ulkopuoliset. Tulosten perusteella saneeraajille suositellaan puhaltimella varustettua hengityksensuojainta, jossa on A2P3-luokan suodatin. Keho tulee suojata vähintään puuvillaisella pitkähihaisella ja -lahkeisella suojahaalarilla tai lyhytaikahaalarilla kontaminaatioriskin vähentämiseksi. Korvien suojaamiseksi hengityksensuojaimen kasvonsuojaimessa tai haalarissa tulisi olla huppu. Kädet on syytä suojata kuivatyövaiheessa tiiviillä käsineillä, jotka estävät noen pääsyn käsineiden sisään, ja märkätyövaiheessa kemikaalikäsineillä, jotka suojaavat pesuaineilta ja pesuveteen liuenneilta epäpuhtauksilta

Fire, explosions, and other special effects are often created with particle systems. In real-time applications the particle systems must be very fast to evaluate since otherwise the application cannot maintain reasonable frame rate. One part of this challenge is the collision detection between particles and the objects in the scene. We present a new approach to collision detection and surface flow effects for particle systems. In pre-processing phase we rasterize a 3D model into a distance/normal grid. The grid can be used for collision avoidance, to create surface drag and to simulate fluid flow around non-deforming objects. This method is not physically accurate, but it provides visually plausible results. The primary benefit of this method is that it is efficient and its performance is independent of the complexity of the model. This methods works well in real-time, in some cases surpassing the rendering speed of modern graphics hardware by order of magnitude.

In Yersinia pseudotuberculosis complex, the O-antigen of LPS is used for the serological characterization of strains, and 21 serotypes have been identified to date. The O-antigen biosynthesis gene cluster and corresponding O-antigen structure have been described for 18, leaving O:8, O:13 and O:14 unresolved. In this study, two O:8 isolates were examined. The O-antigen gene cluster sequence of strain 151 was near identical to serotype O:4a, though a frame-shift mutation was found in ddhD, while No. 6 was different to 151 and carried the O:1b gene cluster. Structural analysis revealed that No. 6 produced a deeply truncated LPS, suggesting a mutation within the waaF gene. Both ddhD and waaF were cloned and expressed in 151 and No. 6 strains, respectively, and it appeared that expression of ddhD gene in strain 151 restored the O-antigen on LPS, while waaF in No. 6 resulted in an LPS truncated less severely but still without the O-antigen, suggesting that other mutations occurred in this strain. Thus, both O:8 isolates were found to be spontaneous O-antigen-negative mutants derived from other validated serotypes, and we propose to remove this serotype from the O-serotyping scheme, as the O:8 serological specificity is not based on the O-antigen.
