3. A Lottery-Based Admissions Process for Faculties of Nursing: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Abstract

Nursing programs across North America are typically significantly oversubscribed, resulting in inflated admitting averages thus making it an unattainable profession for many qualified students. This article proposes a lottery-based admissions process, whereby students who meet established selected criteria for entry would be selected at random until all seats are filled. This would allow all qualified applicants equal chance of admission, and may address issues related to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and may lessen some of the significant burden on prospective applicants.

13. Determining deposits on knit fabrics, yarns, and fibers, from sensor-related treatments.

Abstract

Creation of a knit fabric-based, stable sensor using dipping and encapsulation processes is feasible, but where deposition occurs in the structure is not yet well understood. Using two graphene treatments and three encapsulants applied to single jersey (100% wool, 100% cotton), relative merits of a range of surface characterization tools (e.g., photographic - optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, image analysis (pixel intensity, fiber dimensions), change in lightness (L*, ΔL*, ΔE),) and chemical tools (e.g. vibrational spectroscopy - infrared and Raman) were applied to determine evidence of the treatments. Fabrics, yarns extracted from the treated fabrics and fibers from yarns were each examined. Structure of the fabric, yarns in the fabric, and fibers in the yarns remained clearly identifiable using microscopic methods, suggesting these physical features were largely unchanged. With respect to probable chemical composition, Raman analysis was found preferable to FTIR. Conferring electrical conductivity directly on knit fabric by simple dipping and stabilizing is feasible. Deposition sites of graphene-related treatments and encapsulants have been identified, with some observed differences dependent on structure, whether fabric, yarn, or fiber. Abstract

The nuSTORM facility has been designed to deliver beams of electron and muon neutrinos from the decay of a stored muon beam with a central momentum of 3.8 GeV/c and a momentum spread of 10%. The facility is unique in that it will: serve the future long- and short-baseline neutrino-oscillation programmes by providing definitive measurements of electron-neutrino- and muon-neutrino-nucleus cross sections with percent-level precision; allow searches for sterile neutrinos of exquisite sensitivity to be carried out; and constitute the essential first step in the incremental development of muon accelerators as a powerful new technique for particle physics. Of the world's proton-accelerator laboratories, only CERN and FNAL have the infrastructure required to mount nuSTORM. Since no siting decision has yet been taken, the purpose of this Expression of Interest (EoI) is to request the resources required to: investigate in detail how nuSTORM could be implemented at CERN; and develop options for decisive European contributions to the nuSTORM facility and experimental programme wherever the facility is sited. Abstract

We consider repairable threshold schemes (RTSs), which are threshold schemes that enable a player to securely reconstruct a lost share with help from their peers. We summarise and, where possible, refine existing RTSs and introduce a new parameter for analysis, called the repair metric. We then explore using secure regenerating codes as RTSs and find them to be immediately applicable. We compare all RTS constructions considered and conclude by presenting the best candidate solutions for when either communication complexity or information rate is prioritised.
