This article follows chronologically the changes in the public perception of Laibach in Slovenia, Yugoslavia and the post-Yugoslav countries, Laibach's relation to the Slovenian state, and the group's status of informal (and occasionally formal) cultural ambassadors of Slovenia in the post-Yugoslav context. Because the state (in abstract terms) and Slovenian cultural identity play such an important role in Laibach's artistic output, their formal and informal representation of the Slovenian state and national identity are often misperceived by the media and cultural commentators. The aim of this article is to establish on which occasions and in which contexts Laibach have actually and formally represented Slovenia at international events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Laibach and Neue Slowenische Kunst: Deconstruction of Political Memory through Art.

In the 1980s, the art group Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) employed postmodernist artistic techniques, eclecticism and pastiche, with which they evoked political and artistic memories through music, painting, design, theatre and statements and deconstructed these political memories. For Laibach in particular, the treatment of National Socialist iconography and totalitarian rhetoric was central, but not in service of politics. The totalitarianism they imitated was a simulacrum. In their manifesto the artists claimed to strive towards politically independent artistic activity. However, in the second half of the 1980s, the collective operated with the support of the Socialist Youth League of Slovenia, the youth sector of the Communist Party. In the article, the author examines the complex relationships between art and politics or how the performances of Laibach and NSK in the 1980s were related to the political situation in Slovenia. She is interested in the social integration of Laibach and also NSK, their rhetoric, appearances and artistic-political interventions in Slovenia in the 1980s, especially in relation to the development of events related to Slovene nationality. Laibach and NSK evoked a repressed but essentially present self-image of the Slovene nation's ever-present subordination to other nations, which co-created a collective political complex about Slovene subservience and inadequacy. The evocation of this political representation by the artistic collective, especially Laibach, in the way of reviving and dismantling iconography and rhetoric was not pleasant, but triggered a revision of collective remembering and an assessment of Slovenia's current position, as well as the Slovene nation's potential for national liberation. In summer 2015 for the first time in its history the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea welcomed a western rock band, making an unexpected gesture of inviting the Slovene art group Laibach. Laibach’s credentials for this type of cultural diplomacy may be best observed in the sociopolitical context of the 1980s, when they operated within a broader alternative cultural scene of civil society movements in Slovenia (then socialist Yugoslavia). Laibach have since uniquely employed different media and approaches to inspect relations between art, politics, processes of nation-building and popular culture. In the Western media they are mainly presented as a highly controversial music group originating from the former communist East and disturbing the audiences with their totalitarian imagery and ambiguous political messages. Across the globe they were seen as going to North Korea to entertain a brainwashed and utterly unpredictable audience in the most totalitarian and isolated society in the world. This unusual and well documented journey to the far end of what has remained of the former communist East provides interesting material for analyzing the media interpretations of the East/West divide in the contemporary context. However, this paper focuses on the media debate in Slovenia informed by the local knowledge of Laibach’s significance and history which was largely lacking in the international coverage of this out-of-the-ordinary voyage.

Summary This paper reflects a study in how the Slovenian Performance Art collective the NSK (Neue Slowenische Kunst), and more specifically its sub-group Laibach, functioned as a ‘Memory machine’ in re-enacting historical European trauma in an apparent re-staging of the totalitarian ritual. In this way, Laibach demonstrate history as a contemporary active political agency of Eastern and Central Europe. Shaped by the break-up of Yugoslavia, the NSK was a multi-disciplinary Gesamtkunstwerk primarily comprising three groups: IRWIN (visual arts), Noordung (theatre), and its most influential delivery system, Laibach (music). Championed by Slavoj Žižek, Laibach are Slovenia’s most famous cultural export, and are widely considered Europe’s most controversial music group. In 2017, Laibach caused further controversy for being the first ‘Western’ group to play North Korea. With the strategy of Retrogardism, an aesthetic system unique to Eastern European aesthetic praxis, Laibach and the NSK re-mythologised totalitarian iconography associated with Nazi Kunst and Socialist Realism, which contemporary capitalism can only relate to as offensive kitsch.

11. Canon law and civil law on the eve of the Reformation.

Witte, John
- Abstract
In his 1520 manifesto, To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation Concerning the Reform of the Christian Estate, Martin Luther described the law of Germany as a “wilderness” of confusion. Confronted by the masses of “rambling and farfetched” laws that prevailed in his day, Luther threw up his hands in frustration as he sought to map out appropriate legal reforms. He scratched a couple of quick lines about the superiority of civil law to canon law, and of territorial law to imperial law. He spoke of the need to tailor laws to the “gifts and peculiar characteristics” of local polities. But then, uncharacteristically, Luther gave up. He recommended simply that “wise rulers, side by side with Holy Scripture, would be law enough,” and expressed hope that others would give “more thought and attention to the matter.” Luther himself would soon return to the matter of law reform with a vengeance, but for the moment his mind was on more pressing questions – not least the growing perils to his own body and soul occasioned by the papal bull calling for his excommunication. Luther had ample reason to be frustrated in his attempts to take the measure of the German law of his day. In 1520, the German-speaking lands of the Holy Roman Empire had no fewer than 364 registered polities, most with their own local legal systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the Laibach group activities, which connects politics and music, as well as art and ideology through their work. It focuses on the music and aesthetics of the Laibach, and its criticism of political power. The diploma thesis presents the politically engaged work of the Laibach and in this way analyzes musical creation as a paradigm of rebellion against power and ideology. Laibach and its ideological provocations first appear at the time of serious economic and political crises in the former Yugoslavia. Later on, Laibach finds its opponent in the West and capitalism, therefore the group’s provocation culminates in 2015 with a North Korea tour. Manipulation of totalitarian symbols, provocative performances and avant-garde art are the main means of resistance, the way of which does not change, regardless of the ruling ideology, political system and time period. The goal of the group members remains the same, namely, to analyze the relationship between culture and politics, which is still the basic starting point. Laibach is not politically ideologically oriented, although at certain moments of its operation it is more difficult to understand, as it uses totalitarian symbols to provoke the political system in power at the time.

This paper is about changing cultural contexts for resistance and the way that cultural practices that are resistant to power at one moment become, at the next, implicated in power. The hegemony of certain forms of personal experience also constitutes certain kinds of margins and certain kinds of resistance. Contemporary practices of the self are underpinned by the assumption that there is a frailty of social relations in contemporary society that is homologous to a frailty of the self, a frailty that is addressed by and perpetuated by therapeutic modes of self-management and professional intervention. Qualitative researchers concerned with representations of subjectivity are often engaged in the elaboration of these therapeutic discourses as an alternative to positivist traditions of research in psychology. The interventions described are marked by what can be termed 'knowing emotional illiteracy' that disturbs what we know about the self and identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The writings of Slavoj Zizek have a disorienting effect on readers, and attempts to understand and utilize his ideas in cultural theory have often come to grief. One way into an interpretation of what Zizek is up to is to trace the cultural-political interventions of some fellow travellers still active in the production and disturbance of our ideological enjoyment. This commentary follows some of the contours of the landscape of Slovenian theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this bachelor thesis, I deal with a phenomenon of the more recent Slovene art movement, the multimedia artist group Laibach. It first surfaced in the 1980s in Yugoslavia, and later also made a name for itself abroad, mainly by playing the role of a constant disruptive presence in the Slovene social discourse. Laibach gained general acceptance and global popularity with the album Opus Dei which also represented a deviation from the band's initial principles. In my research, I mainly focused on the group's relation to literary and art movements of the 20th century, and the roles of individual lyrics, which can be original works or contain popular music adaptations, even be political speeches or partisan poems. The only thing most pre-existing texts have in common is the fact that their meaning is often transformed in the context of the Laibach Kunst and their artistic merit can, as a consequence, be altered significantly, as I will try to establish in this thesis.

Djela NSK kolektiva, uključujući javne iskaze, manifeste, kodeks odijevanja i ponašanja svjedoče o glavnoj preokupaciji kolektiva – državi koju nazivaju apstraktnim organizmom čije granice nisu teritorijalne nego umne. NSK država napušta koncept društva kao zajednice ljudi i usvaja koncept države bez nacije, čime imitira institucionalne manifestacije današnjih država, istovremeno parodirajući svojom deklaracijom što vjernije oponašajući ono što parodira.

The 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's year of birth in 1983 gave rise to a critical examination of his time and the developments he had begun that had changed the world so sustainably. The Reformation has also made a significant impact in the southeast of Europe. In order to make the Word of God directly accessible to as many people as possible, translations were made and distributed in print to churches and communities. Many smaller languages, including Slovene, were written in this way. This act is due to the Slovenes Primus Trüber (1508-1586). He played a central role in the Reformation in his home in Krainer, and thus came into ever closer contact with Protestant Germany, especially with the Duchy of Württemberg, which gradually became the outpost of German Lutheranism., Die 500.

Jejich pouť z jámy smrti do řeřavé bažiny a naopak zastupuje nikdy nekončící příběh života a smrti, tvorby a destrukce, těla a duše, světla a tmy. Všechny symboly jsou zároveň užívány ironickým i vážným způsobem., The work is connecting well-known symbols of alchemy and various esoteric traditions and giving them visual and narrative form. There is deconstruction and glorification of this type of philosophy in the same time. The characters of the story are symbolizing the german and slavic archetypes. Their voyage from the pit of death to the glowing swamp and vice versa is representing the ageless story of life and death, creation and destruction, body and soul, light and darkness. All the symbols are used in the ironic and serious way in the same time.
