Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided radiation therapy (RT) is enhancing head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment through superior soft tissue contrast and longitudinal imaging capabilities. However, manual tumor segmentation remains a significant challenge, spurring interest in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven automation. To accelerate innovation in this field, we present the Head and Neck Tumor Segmentation for MR-Guided Applications (HNTS-MRG) 2024 Challenge, a satellite event of the 27th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention. This challenge addresses the scarcity of large, publicly available AI-ready adaptive RT datasets in HNC and explores the potential of incorporating multi-timepoint data to enhance RT auto-segmentation performance. Participants tackled two HNC segmentation tasks: automatic delineation of primary gross tumor volume (GTVp) and gross metastatic regional lymph nodes (GTVn) on pre-RT (Task 1) and mid-RT (Task 2) T2-weighted scans. The challenge provided 150 HNC cases for training and 50 for testing, hosted on Grand Challenge using a Docker submission framework. In total, 19 independent teams from across the world qualified by submitting both their algorithms and corresponding papers, resulting in 18 submissions for Task 1 and 15 submissions for Task 2. Evaluation using the mean aggregated Dice Similarity Coefficient showed top-performing AI methods achieved scores of 0.825 in Task 1 and 0.733 in Task 2. Evidence of chirality was observed at the Fe metal center in Fe(III) spin crossover coordination salts [Fe(qsal)2][ Ni(dmit)2] and [Fe(qsal)2](TCNQ)2 from X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Fe 2p3/2 core threshold. Hemoglobin (Hb) is a multifaceted protein, classified as a metalloprotein, chromoprotein, and globulin. It incorporates iron, which plays a crucial role in transporting oxygen within red blood cells. Hb functions by carrying oxygen from the respiratory organs to diverse tissues in the body, where it releases oxygen to fuel aerobic respiration, thus supporting the organism's metabolic processes. Hb can exist in several forms, primarily distinguished by the oxidation state of the iron in the heme group, including Methemoglobin (MetHb). Measuring the concentration of MetHb is crucial because it cannot transport oxygen, hence higher concentration of MetHb in the blood causes methemoglobinemia. Here, we use optically detected magnetic relaxometry of paramagnetic iron spins in MetHb drop-casted onto nanostructured diamond doped with shallow high density nitrogen vacancy (NV) spin qubits. We modify the MetHb concentration in the range of 6 x 10^6 - 1.8 x 10^7 adsorbed Fe+3 spins per um^2 and observe an increase of the NV relaxation rate G1 (= 1/T1, T1 is NV spin lattice relaxation time) up to 2 x 10^3 s^-1. NV magnetic relaxometry of MetHb in phosphate-buffered saline solution shows a similar effect with an increase of G1 to 6.7 x 10e3 s^-1 upon increasing the MetHb concentration to 100 uM. The increase of NV G1 is explained by the increased spin noise coming from the Fe+3 spins present in MetHb proteins. Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) magnetometry offers an alternative tool to detect paramagnetic centers in cells with a favorable combination of magnetic sensitivity and spatial resolution. Here, we employ NV magnetic relaxometry to detect cytochrome C (Cyt-C) nanoclusters. Cyt-C is a water-soluble protein that plays a vital role in the electron transport chain of mitochondria. Under ambient conditions, the heme group in Cyt-C remains in the Fe3+ state, which is paramagnetic. We vary the concentration of Cyt-C from 6 to 54 uM and observe a reduction of the NV spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) from 1.2 ms to 150 us, which is attributed to the spin noise originating from the Fe3+ spins. NV T1 imaging of Cyt-C drop-casted on a nanostructured diamond chip allows us to detect the relaxation rates from the adsorbed Fe3+ within Cyt-C.

[Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) (Fe-triazole) spin crossover molecules show thermal, electrical, and optical switching between high spin (HS) and low spin (LS) states, making them promising candidates for molecular spintronics. The LS and HS transitions originate from the electronic configurations of Fe(II), and are considered to be diamagnetic and paramagnetic respectively. The Fe(II) LS state has six paired electrons in the ground states with no interaction with the magnetic field and a diamagnetic behavior is usually observed. While the bulk magnetic properties of Fe-triazole compounds are widely studied by standard magnetometry techniques their properties at the individual level are missing. Here we use nitrogen vacancy (NV) based magnetometry to study the magnetic properties of the Fe-triazole LS state of nanoparticle clusters and individual nanorods of size varying from 20 to 1000 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy are performed to determine the size of the nanoparticles/nanorods and to confirm their respective spin state. The magnetic field patterns produced by the nanoparticles/nanorods are imaged by NV magnetic microscopy as a function of applied magnetic field (up to 350 mT) and correlated with SEM and Raman. We found that in most of the nanorods the LS state is slightly paramagnetic, possibly originating from the surface oxidation and/or the greater Fe(III) presence along the nanorod edges. NV measurements on the Fe-triazole LS state nanoparticle clusters revealed both diamagnetic and paramagnetic behavior. Our results highlight the potential of NV quantum sensors to study the magnetic properties of spin crossover molecules and molecular magnets.

Strangeon star model has passed various observational tests, such as the massive pulsars and the tidal deformability during binary mergers. Pulsar glitch, as a useful probe for studying the interior structure of pulsars, has also been studied in strangeon star model in our previous papers, including the recovery coefficient, the waiting time of glitches and glitch activity. In this paper, the recovery process of a glitch is described in the strangeon star model, based on the starquake picture established in Paper I. After the starquake, the inner motion of the stellar matter would reduce the tangential pressure in the cracked places at the equatorial plane. The recovery (increase) of the tangential pressure would be achieved by a viscous flow towards the cracked places at equatorial plane, which leads to the exponential recovery of the spin frequency. A uniform viscous flow can reproduce the single exponential decay observed in some glitches, and the viscous time-scale $\tau$ and the depth $h$ of the cracking place below the surface can be fitted by the recovery data. It is found that $h$ increases with glitch size $\Delta\nu/\nu$, which is expected in the glitch scenario of strangeon stars. The magnitude of the recovery predicted in this recovery model is also consistent with that derived from observations. The single exponential decay reproduced by a uniform viscous flow can be generalized to two or more exponentials by the multi-component of viscous flows., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. The state of supranuclear matter in compact stars remains puzzling, and it is argued that pulsars could be strangeon stars. The consequences of merging double strangeon stars are worth exploring, especially in the new era of multi-messenger astronomy. To develop the "strangeon kilonova" scenario proposed in Paper I, we make a qualitative description about the evolution of ejecta and light curves for merging double strangeon stars. In the hot environment of the merger, the strangeon nuggets ejected by tidal disruption and hydrodynamical squeezing would suffer from evaporation, in which process particles, such as strangeons, neutrons and protons, are emitted. Taking into account both the evaporation of strangeon nuggets and the decay of strangeons, most of the strangeon nuggets would turn into neutrons and protons, within dozens of milliseconds after being ejected. The evaporation rates of different particles depend on temperature, and we find that the ejecta could end up with two components, with high and low opacity respectively. The high opacity component would be in the directions around the equatorial plane, and the low opacity component would be in a broad range of angular directions. The bolometric light curves show that even if the total ejected mass would be as low as $\sim 10^{-4} M_\odot$, the spin-down power of the long-lived remnant would account for the whole emission of kilonova AT2017gfo associated with GW 170817. The detailed picture of merging double strangeon stars is expected to be tested by future numerical simulations.

Image-based tracking of medical instruments is an integral part of surgical data science applications. Previous research has addressed the tasks of detecting, segmenting and tracking medical instruments based on laparoscopic video data. However, the proposed methods still tend to fail when applied to challenging images and do not generalize well to data they have not been trained on. This paper introduces the Heidelberg Colorectal (HeiCo) data set - the first publicly available data set enabling comprehensive benchmarking of medical instrument detection and segmentation algorithms with a specific emphasis on method robustness and generalization capabilities. Our data set comprises 30 laparoscopic videos and corresponding sensor data from medical devices in the operating room for three different types of laparoscopic surgery. Annotations include surgical phase labels for all video frames as well as information on instrument presence and corresponding instance-wise segmentation masks for surgical instruments (if any) in more than 10,000 individual frames. The state of supranuclear matter in compact star remains puzzling, and it is argued that pulsars could be strangeon stars. What if binary strangeon stars merge? This kind of merger could result in the formation of a hyper-massive strangeon star, accompanied by bursts of gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation (and even strangeon kilonova explained in the paper). The tidal polarizability of binary strangeon stars is different from that of binary neutron stars, because a strangeon star is self-bound on surface by fundamental strong force while a neutron star by the gravity, and their equations of state are different. Our calculation shows that the tidal polarizability of merging binary strangeon stars is favored by GW170817. Three kinds of kilonovae (i.e., of neutron, quark and strangeon) are discussed, and the light curve of the kilonova AT 2017gfo following GW170817 could be explained by considering the decaying strangeon nuggets and remnant star spin-down. Additionally, the energy ejected to the fireball around the nascent remnant strangeon star, being manifested as a Gamma-ray burst (GRB), is calculated. It is found that, after a promote burst, an X-ray plateau could follow in a timescale of $10^{2-3}$ s. Certainly, the results could be tested also by further observational synergies between gravitational wave detectors (e.g., aLIGO) and X-ray telescopes (e.g., Chinese HXMT and eXTP), and especially if the detected gravitational wave form is checked by peculiar equation of state provided by the numerical relativistical simulation., Comment: Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 18, 24 (2018)

We provide approximate analytic expressions for above-threshold ionization (ATI) transition probabilities and photoelectron angular distributions (PADs). These analytic expressions are more general than those existing in the literature and include the residual binding potential in the electron continuum propagation. They successfully reproduce the ATI side lobes and specific holographic structures such as the near-threshold fan-shaped pattern and the spider-like structure that extends up to relatively high photoelectron energies. We compare such expressions with the Coulomb quantum orbit strong-field approximation (CQSFA) and the full solution of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for different driving-field frequencies and intensities, and provide an in-depth analysis of the physical mechanisms behind specific holographic structures. Our results shed additional light on what aspects of the CQSFA must be prioritized in order to obtain the key holographic features, and highlight the importance of forward scattered trajectories. Furthermore, we find that the holographic patterns change considerably for different field parameters, even if the Keldysh parameter is kept roughly the same., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. Pulsar-like compact stars provide us a unique laboratory to explore properties of dense matter at supra-nuclear densities. One of the models for pulsar-like stars is that they are totally composed of "strangeons", and in this paper we studied the pulsar glitches in a strangeon star model. Strangeon stars would be solidified during cooling, and the solid stars would be natural to have glitches as the result of starquakes. Based on the starquake model established before, we proposed that when the starquake occurs, the inner motion of the star which changes the moment of inertia and has impact on the glitch sizes, is divided into plastic flow and elastic motion. The plastic flow which is induced in the fractured part of the outer layer, would move tangentially to redistribute the matter of the star and would be hard to recover. The elastic motion, on the other hand, changes its shape and would recover significantly. Under this scenario, we could understand the behaviors of glitches without significant energy releasing, including the Crab and the Vela pulsars, in an uniform model. We derive the recovery coefficient as a function of glitch size, as well as the time interval between two successive glitches as the function of the released stress. Our results show consistency with observational data under reasonable ranges of parameters. We study experimentally and theoretically the steady-state dynamics of a simple stochastic electronic system featuring two resistor-capacitor circuits coupled by a third capacitor. The resistors are subject to thermal noises at real temperatures. The voltage fluctuation across each resistor can be compared to a one-dimensional Brownian motion. However, the collective dynamical behavior, when the resistors are subject to distinct thermal baths, is identical to that of a Brownian gyrator, as first proposed by R. Filliger and P. Reimann in Physical Review Letters 99, 230602 (2007). The average gyrating dynamics is originated from the absence of detailed balance due to unequal thermal baths. We look into the details of this stochastic gyrating dynamics, its dependences on the temperature difference and coupling strength, and the mechanism of heat transfer through this simple electronic circuit.
