Abstract: We report the development of a gas preconcentrator based on carbon nanotubes for an efficient detection of benzene. The carbon nanotubes are spray coated on the preconcentrating support and their concentration factor is being determined. The results confirmed the adsorption of benzene in different tested CNT samples with different degrees of affinity. Among these materials, MWCNTs fabricated by Arc discharge method provided a sharp desorption peak at 250°C with a practical concentration factor of 70. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Penicillium glabrum, P. purpurescens, P. decumbens, P. expansum, P. chrysogenum, P. crustosum and P. aurantiogriseum are responsible for some of the alterations noticed on Moroccan table grapes cold stored. Contamination of these table grapes with Penicillium species occurs in the vineyard and inside the cooling station where other fruits which are often fungus-contaminated are also kept. All of these Penicillium species were able to grow at 0°C apart from P. glabrum and P. purpurescens. Consequently, refrigeration of grapes during long-term storage is not sufficient in itself in preserving their initial qualities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Visceral leishmaniasis is a notifiable parasitic disease that had increased in incidence in our region on the past few years. It is common in children. In adults, it occurs more on a background of immunodeficiency, and frequently with incomplete clinical manifestations, making the diagnosis complicated. Findings The aim of our study is to reveal different features of visceral leishmaniasis in adults, through the analysis of its epidemiological, clinical and biological parameters, in a group of 26 patients. No one was infected with HIV or under immunosuppressive therapy Clinical presentation was generally conservative, but there was few differences in adults compared to children, concerning both the clinical symptoms and the laboratory parameters. Diagnosis was provided by direct examination of bone marrow smears in 24 cases (sensitivity 92%), and anti-leishmanial serology in the others. Conclusion We should think to the diagnosis of VL even if the patient is not known immunocompromised, and even if the clinical is incomplete, to avoid a delay of care which can lead to serious complications.

Consistent with their essential role in cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix, integrins and their associated signaling pathways have been shown to be involved in cell proliferation, migration, invasion and survival, processes required in both tumorigenesis and metastasis. β1-integrins represent the predominantly expressed integrins in mammary epithelial cells and have been proven crucial for mammary gland development and differentiation. Here we provide an overview of the studies that have used transgenic mouse models of mammary tumorigenesis to establish β1-integrin as a critical mediator of breast cancer progression and thereby as a potential therapeutic target for the development of new anticancer strategies. The sensory cells that transduce the signals for hearing and balance are highly specialized mechanoreceptors called hair cells that together with supporting cells comprise the sensory epithelia of the inner ear. Loss of hair cells from toxin exposure and age can cause balance disorders and is essentially irreversible due to the inability of mammalian vestibular organs to regenerate physiologically active hair cells. Here, we show substantial regeneration of hair cells in a mouse model of vestibular damage by treatment with a combination of glycogen synthase kinase 3β and histone deacetylase inhibitors. The drugs stimulated supporting cell proliferation and differentiation into hair cells. The new hair cells were reinnervated by vestibular afferent neurons, rescuing otolith function by restoring head translation-evoked otolith afferent responses and vestibuloocular reflexes. Drugs that regenerate hair cells thus represent a potential therapeutic approach to the treatment of balance disorders.

The conformational preferences of three azadipeptides Ac-Pro-azaXaa-NHMe [Xaa = Asn (1), Asp (2), Ala (3)] have been carried out in gas phase and solution (water) using the density functional method B3LYP/6-311 +  + G(d,p) to explore the effect of the change of side chain of azaamino acids at the i + 2 position on the stability of these components. The most stable conformations of compounds (1), (2), and (3) have an amid bond oriented trans, trans, and cis, respectively, in gas phase, whereas the orientation of amid bond in water solvent of compounds (2) and (3) has changed to cis and trans, respectively. We have also noticed the importance of backbone-side chain hydrogen bonds in the stabilization of the β turn motif in gas phase since this motif is more stable in the case of compounds (1) and (2) and less stable in the case of compound (3) in which these hydrogen bonds are absent. Furthermore, the βII(βII') turn structure is more stable than βI turn for all conformations of the three compounds in gas phase, while it is not true in the case of some conformations in solution. Moreover, the stability of β turn increases from azaAsn to azaAsp which could be due to the side chain's basic nature of azaAsn. In general, hydrogen bonds were found to play a key role in the stabilization of these compounds since most of conformers are lower in energy when they have more than two hydrogen bond interactions while conformations with one or no hydrogen bonds are higher in energy and thus less stable., (© 2021. We analyzed transcriptomic data from otic sensory cells differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) by a previously described method to gain new insights into the early human otic neurosensory lineage. We identified genes and biological networks not previously described to occur in the human otic sensory developmental cell lineage. These analyses identified and ranked genes known to be part of the otic sensory lineage program (SIX1, EYA1, GATA3, etc.), in addition to a number of novel genes encoding extracellular matrix (ECM) (COL3A1, COL5A2, DCN, etc.) and integrin (ITG) receptors (ITGAV, ITGA4, ITGA) for ECM molecules. The results were confirmed by quantitative PCR analysis of a comprehensive panel of genes differentially expressed during the time course of hiPSC differentiation in vitro. Immunocytochemistry validated results for select otic and ECM/ITG gene markers in the in vivo human fetal inner ear. Our screen shows ECM and ITG gene expression changes coincident with hiPSC differentiation towards human otic neurosensory cells. Our findings suggest a critical role of ECM-ITG interactions with otic neurosensory lineage genes in early neurosensory development and cell fate determination in the human fetal inner ear.

Auditory neuropathy is caused by the loss of afferent input to the brainstem via the components of the neural pathway comprising inner hair cells and the first order neurons of the spiral ganglion. Recent work has identified the synapse between cochlear primary afferent neurons and sensory hair cells as a particularly vulnerable component of this pathway. Loss of these synapses due to noise exposure or aging results in the pathology identified as hidden hearing loss, an initial stage of cochlear dysfunction that goes undetected in standard hearing tests. We show here that repulsive axonal guidance molecule a (RGMa) acts to prevent regrowth and synaptogenesis of peripheral auditory nerve fibers with inner hair cells. Treatment of noise-exposed animals with an anti-RGMa blocking antibody regenerated inner hair cell synapses and resulted in recovery of wave-I amplitude of the auditory brainstem response, indicating effective reversal of synaptopathy.
