1. Gentiana micans C.B. Clarke (1883: 112). Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. “ Sikkim ad 15,000 ped. alt.” (CAL, barcode CAL0000018215!, (Fig. 1). Isolectotypes: K, barcode K000872040, digital image!, GH, barcode GH00073946, digital image!; L, QRcode L.2696217, digital image!; P, barcode P00350434, digital image!). Residual Syntypes: BHUTAN. “ Phullong, alt. 15000 ft., J.D. H ” (K, individual specimen on blue folder (without any unique identifier number) on the sheet with barcode K000872040, digital image!). — Clarke (1875), based on the collections of Gentiana elements from India, in J.D. Hooker and T.Thomson’s herbarium; treated “G. sp. no. 19, Hook.f. et Th. ” as an unnamed variety “ss” under G. argentea (Royle ex D.Don) Royle ex D.Don which have slightly longer corolla than the latter and cited the locality as “ Sikkim ad 15,000 ped. alt.”. Subsequently, he validated that variety “ss” of G. argentea or “G. sp. no 19, Hook.f. et Th. ” as a new species, G. micans C.B. Clarke, in The Flora of British India (Clarke 1883) directly referring to his 1875 publication. Therefore, the specimens (“ Sikkim ad 15,000 ped. alt.”) cited in his 1875 publication are to be treated as original materials (vide Art. 9.4 Shenzhen Code), associated with this name along with the newly cited gathering from “Phullong” [in Bhutan] collected by J.D. Hooker. Ho & Liu’s designation (2001: 319), “K! – holotype; GH! P! –isotypes” for the name Gentiana micans C.B.Clarke, do not stand on any ground according to the rules of ICN (Turland et al. 2018) vide Art. 7.11, 9.1, 9.3 & 9.10. Amongst the traced original materials associated with this name all of which were collected by J.D. Hooker; one each, housed at CAL (CAL0000018215!), GH (GH00073946 digital image!), L (L.2696217 digital image!) and P (P00350434 digital image!). The herbarium sheet housed in K (K000872040 digital image!) is admixture of two different species from three gatherings— Gentiana leucomelaena Maxim. from “Thibet” [Tibet] (K barcode 000872039, digital image!) separated from rest of the specimens of G. micans C.B.Clarke from Sikkim and Phullong [in Bhutan], on the sheet by Clarke himself. It was very difficult to separate individuals of “Phullong” [in Bhutan] from Sikkim, (K barcode 000872040, digital image!); though it is assumed that the individual specimen on the blue voucher folder without any unique identifier number to be from Phullong [in Bhutan]. Therefore, to avoid this confusion, the specimen housed in CAL (CAL0000018215!) with original remarks of C.B. Clarke collected from 15,000 ft of Sikkim by J.D. 3. Swertia hookeri C.B. Clarke (1883: 127). Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. “ Sikkim Himalaya, alt. 12-13,000 ft. ” (CAL, barcode CAL0000018334! (Fig. 3). Isolectotypes: K, barcode K000854378, K000854381; L, QRcode L.2693413, digital image!; P, barcode P00524815 digital images!. Residual Syntypes: INDIA. Sikkim: “Lachen & Choongtam, J.D. H. ” (K, barcode K000854381, K000854379, digital image!); ibid., Sikkim Himalaya: “ King ” (K, barcode K000854383, K000854382, K000854384, digital images!). — Clarke (1883) based on J.D. Hooker and T. Thomson’s collections of Gentiana elements (an unnamed species as Gentiana sp. n. 41) from Sikkim Himalaya, India, described a new species Swertia hookeri C.B.Clarke and cited specimens as “ Sikkim Himalaya, alt. 12-13,000 ft.; Lachen & Choongtam, J.D.H., King ”. Ho & Liu (2015: 165), regarding the type of the name S. hookeri C.B.Clarke, cited “J. D. Hooker s.n. (CAL – holotype, not seen; GH!, K! – isotypes)” which do not stand on any ground according to the rules of ICN (vide Art. 7.11, 9.1, 9.3 & 9.10) even in this case as well. Nine original specimens associated with this name were traced (1 in CAL [CAL0000018334], 6 in K [K000854378, K000854379, K000854381, K000854383, K000854382, K000854384, digital images!], 1 in L [QRcode L.2693413] and 1 in P [P00524815]) possessing authentic labels. However, we have been unable to locate any specimens from GH. Amongst the traced original specimens, CAL0000018334! bear original notes written on the sheet and agrees well with the protologue; hence selected here as the lectotype.

2. Gentiana phyllocalyx C.B. Clarke (1883: 116). Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. “ Sikkim Himalaya, alt. 13‒15,000 ft. ” (CAL, barcode CAL0000018107! (Fig. 2). Isolectotypes: K, barcode K000872001, three individuals beside the colour plate on the sheet above barcode of this number, digital image!; L, QRcode L.2695807, digital image!; P, barcode P00506810, P00506811, P00506816, digital images!). Residual Syntypes: INDIA. Sikkim: “Kankola and Lachen, J.D. H ” (K, barcode K000844000, K000872002, digital images!). — Clarke (1875) described an unnamed species of Gentiana (sp. no. 26), which he mentioned being distributed under the name G. venusta Wall. by J.D. Hooker and Thomson (“sub nomine G. venusta, Wall., ab Hook.f. et Th. distributa) collected from “ Sikkim ad 13,000 -15,000 ped. alt., coll. Hook. f. et Th. ”. Subsequently, he validated this unnamed species as G. phyllocalyx C.B.Clarke in The Flora of British India (Clarke 1883) directly referring to his 1875 publication. Therefore the specimens (“ Sikkim ad 13,000 -15,000 ped. alt., coll. Hook. f. et Th. ”) cited in his 1875 publication are to be treated as original materials (vide Art. 9.4 Shenzhen Code), associated with this name along with the newly cited gatherings from “Kankola and Lachen” collected by J.D. Hooker. Ho & Liu’s statement (2001: 233) “ J. D. Hooker s.n. (K! – holotype; BM! GH! –isotypes)” regarding the types of the name Gentiana phyllocalyx C.B.Clarke and usage of the terms “ holotype ” and “isotype” do not stand on any ground according to the rules of ICN (vide Art. 7.11, 9.1, 9.3 & 9.10) in this case as well. During our study, nine specimens were traced which were distributed by the name Gentiana venusta Wall., of which six collected from Sikkim in between 13,000 -15,000 ft., and two particularly from “Kankola” and one from “Lachen”, all collected by J.D. Hooker. The specimen deposited in CAL (barcode CAL0000018107) is selected here as the lectotype for the name Gentiana phyllocalyx C.B.Clarke for having original remarks by C.B. Clarke regarding the characters how it differs from G. venusta and unambiguously corresponding with the protologue. No original specimen associated with the name Gentiana phyllocalyx C.B.Clarke could be traced in GH and BM; however, in BM one specimen (barcode BM001014679, digital image!) is located, which bears an annotation slip of T.N. Ho designated as the type of G. phyllocalyx f. lutescens, a name could not be traced, is not collected from Sikkim or by J.D.
