Abstract Background Malnutrition is a significant concern reported in adult critically ill patients, yet there is no gold standard to assess nutritional status in this population. This study examines the association between nutritional status and clinical outcomes in intensive care unit (ICU) patients using nutritional risk assessment tools and aims to look for the best tool. Method In a single-center prospective cohort study among 165 patients, the predictive performance of high or low malnutrition risk assessed by Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS), Modified Nutrition Risk in Critically Ill (m-NUTRIC), Mini-Nutritional-Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF), Controlling Nutritional status (CONUT), and Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) were evaluated and compared for mortality, organ failure, length of hospitalization, and mechanical ventilation (MV). Results Different assessment tools showed various nutritional statuses. m-NUTRIC and NRS-2002 were found to be associated more strongly relative to other tools with mortality (RR = 1.72; 95% CI, 1.42–2.08) and (RR = 1.37; 95% CI, 1.08–1.72), organ failure (RR = 1.69; 95% CI, 1.44–1.96) and (RR = 1.22; 95% CI, 0.99–1.48), MV (RR = 1.46; 95% CI, 1.27–1.65) and (RR = 1.21; 95% CI, 1.04–1.39) respectively. There was no correlation between malnutrition levels assessed by mentioned tools except for NRS-2002 and length of hospitalization. In predicting mortality or illness severity, the cut points were different for some tools like NUTRIC-score and all assessed outcomes (3.5), MNA-SF and mortality (6.5), CONUT with mortality, and MV (6.5). Conclusions A considerable proportion of patients admitted to the ICU are at high risk for malnutrition. Compared to other tools, m-NUTRIC and NRS-2002 proved superior in predicting clinical outcomes in critically ill patients. Other tools overestimated the risk of malnutrition in the ICU so couldn’t predict clinical outcomes correctly.

Abstract Clinical translation of current cancer vaccine research has been hampered by limited antitumor immune responses due to inefficient antigen delivery and presentation, suboptimal DC and T cell activation. Biomaterial‐based nanovaccine offers targeted antigen delivery, protection from degradation in vivo, and prolonged tumor therapeutic efficacy. This study introduces a lipid‐coated deoxycholic acid‐survivin nanoassembly (DA‐L‐DSA). Survivin, overexpressed in several cancer cells and involved in cancer cell growth and immune evasion, is selected as a tumor‐associated antigen. An major histocompatibility complex class I binding epitope of survivin is engineered into the nanoassembly. R848, TLR 7/8 agonist, and SD‐208, TGF‐beta receptor1 kinase inhibitor, are coencapsulated into the nanoassembly as potent adjuvants to boost DC maturation and enhance antigen presentation. The DA‐L‐DSA effectively stimulates the maturation of dendritic cells, migrates into lymph nodes, and enhances T‐cell activation and Th1 response. A substantial influx of cytotoxic T lymphocytes into primary tumors is observed in a murine melanoma model and demonstrates anti‐metastatic effects in a spontaneous breast cancer metastasis model. Furthermore, DA‐L‐DSA exhibits a remarkable synergistic effect in the combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors alleviating immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Taken together, these findings suggest DA‐L‐DSA as a promising immuno‐therapeutic platform that could be applicable to diverse intractable cancers.

Abstract Background The placement of liners near the pulp area is essential for therapeutic effects and maintaining pulp health while stimulating the formation of tertiary dentin. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the calcium release, pH, biocompatibility, solubility, and bioactivity of three resin-modified calcium hydroxide cavity liners. Methods The disc specimens of each cavity liner were prepared using polyethylene molds of 7 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height (n = 10). Three light-cure liners evaluated include Ultra-Blend Plus (UB), Base-it (BI), and Master Dent (MD). The samples were then immersed in flasks containing 10 mL of distilled water. Calcium ion release, pH, and solubility were evaluated in two weeks of incubation. The cytotoxicity of extracts adjacent to the specimens was evaluated by MTT assay using NIH/3T3 cells after 1, 3, and 7 days of incubation. The ability to induce the nucleation of calcium phosphates (CaPs) after 28-day immersion in a simulated body fluid was investigated by SEM-EDX analysis. Nowadays, transparency as one of the indicators of qualified governance is an essential need of governments in almost all aspects of governance. Definitely, transparency in the process of holding elections is one of the ways of holding a healthy election. Accordingly, evaluation of transparency in elections may include observers and executors of elections on one hand, and election candidates on the other hand. In the general policies of elections, as an upper-hand document, the requirements of a transparent electoral system have been illustrated in order to improve the country's electoral system and reach the favorable condition. Based on this, this article, by a descriptive-analytical method, aims to answer this question of, according to the general policies of elections, what are the weaknesses and gaps concerning transparency in the current legal regime governing the parliamentary elections and the solutions to reform it? By examining the general policies of elections, it was found that the lawmaker should reduce the ambiguity of requirements of candidates based on the foundations of Islamic Republic regime. Furthermore, the assets, properties and election costs of candidates should be made transparent to all voters. The executor of elections should employ clear and trustworthy framework in the process of voting and vote counting. Furthermore, legal authorities must respond to the inquiries made as to the approval or rejection of candidates’s qualification in due course and avoid any delays.

Undoubtedly, jus cogens or preemptory norm is always recognized as the highest source of international law. Nevertheless, the judicial review of International Court of Justice caused doubt in the absolute priority of jus cogens when violation of jus cogens and immunity are simultaneously argued in a case. Especially, in the cases concerning the Arrest Warrant (Congo v. Belgium 2002) and the Jurisdictional Immunities (Germany v. Italy 2012), ICJ tried to separate procedural and substantive norms and declared that the norms of immunity and jus cogens are different in nature, thus they couldn’t oppose each other but immunity as a procedural norm could prevent deciding about merits. In this article, by using descriptive – analytic method, the rationale behind the decision of ICJ is analyzed in order to know that if immunity is considered procedural and jus cogens is recognized as substantive norm in international law and how these norms interact. Evaluation of doctrine shows that there is no certainty about the quality of the separation of procedural and substantive norms and their proof in international law. Therefore, the court’s decision in choosing the approach could cause an insecurity in the peremptory place of jus cogens.

ObjectiveAbiotic stresses such as drought and salinity significantly affect plant growth and performance. Plants use strategies to adapt and tolerate drought and salt stress that may threaten their survival during their life cycle, one of which is miRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation.Materials and methodsIn the current research, miRNAs that showed significant expression during salt and drought stress were selected by checking the references to investigate this phenomenon in rapeseed plants. The phylogenetic tree was constructed to analyze and compare the evolutionary relationships and conservation of MicroRNA effective in drought and salinity stress in Brassica napus, Brassica rapa, and Brassica oleracea species. Target genes for selected miRNAs were identified using psRNATarget online software. Categorization and gene ontology of target genes and identification of biological pathways were accomplished; also, proteins were classified based on molecular function and biological processes. The Protein-protein interaction was analyzed to comprehensively interpret the relationships between the target genes. In the present study, 225 target genes for miRNAs were identified.ResultsAfter examining the protein interaction network, it was found that there were the most interactions between ribosomal, proteasome subunits and the ubiquitin-proteasome system. This result determined that drought and salinity stress leads to the activation of various biological systems and pathways and changes in gene expression along with the activation of the protein synthesis machine and alterations in protein content. By activating post-transcriptional gene regulation (PTGR) and post-translational modifications (PTMs), the plant regulates the abundance, activities, intracellular distribution, and transport of regulatory proteins involved in various growth processes as well as stress response. ConclusionThe results of this study will lead to a broader perspective regarding stress and its effect on the pathways involved in cellular processes and will reveal the wide dimensions of the stress response.

Testicular cancer is the most common malignancy in men 20–40 years old and most commonly metastasizes to the lung, liver, and brain. Choroidal metastasis from testicular cancer is exceedingly rare, and only few cases have been described in the literature. We report a patient who presented with painful unilateral vision loss as the initial presenting symptom of metastatic testicular germ cell tumor (GCT). A 22-year-old Latino man presented with a 3-week history of progressive central vision loss and dyschromatopsia, accompanied by intermittent, throbbing ocular, and periocular pain, in the left eye. Associated symptom was remarkable for abdominal pain. Examination of the left eye disclosed light perception vision and a large choroidal mass in the posterior pole involving the optic disk and the macula with associated hemorrhages. Neuroimaging showed a 2.1-cm lesion in the posterior globe of the left eye, and B-scan and A-scan ultrasonography findings were consistent with choroidal metastasis. Systemic workup revealed a mass in the left testicle with metastasis to the retroperitoneum, lungs, and liver. Biopsy of a retroperitoneal lymph node showed a GCT. Visual acuity worsened from light perception to no light perception 5 days following initial presentation. Several cycles of chemotherapy were completed, including salvage therapy; however, these treatments were unsuccessful. While vision loss due to choroidal metastasis as the initial presenting symptom of testicular cancer is rare, clinicians should consider metastatic testicular cancer in the differential diagnoses in patients with choroidal tumors, especially in young men.

Background and Aim: Antibiotic resistance of pathogens responsible for nosocomial infections, has been a growing concern for healthcare system in recent decades. The aim of the current study was to identify the strains responsible for nosocomial infections and determine their frequency rates and antimicrobial resistance profiles in the patients admitted to intensive care units of Hazrat-e Rasool General Hospital in Tehran. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study we collected 936 blood, urine and sputum samples from the patients who had been admitted to the intensive care units of Hazrat-e Rasool General Hospital in Tehran between March 2020 and March 2021. Determination of strains and frequency rates of pathogens were carried out using multiple specific differential cultures. Then, we detected antibiotic resistance profile of each pathogen by using disc diffusion method. Results: Acinetobacter (22.5%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (18.7%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (13.6%), Candida albicans (11.2%) and Escherichia coli (7.2%) were the most common pathogens involved in nosocomial infections in this study. Acinetobacter isolates showed the highest sensitivity to clostin (100%) and cefotaxime (97.2%), respectively, and the highest resistant rate to ampicillin sulbactam (38.9%). Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that in addition to the diversity of different pathogens in causing nosocomial infections in intensive care units, antibiotic resistance of these pathogens which is on the rise should be regarded important. Results of the current study and other similar periodic studies can provide valuable information for monitoring and management of emerging drug resistant infections.

The deficiency of vitamin D amongst Iranian people is high and also is related on hyperglycemia. This study aims to evaluate the association of vitamin D levels with the required dose of insulin prescribed based on an insulin therapy protocol in critical condition patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU), in an investigation based in Iran. This cross-sectional study was performed on patients who required insulin due to hyperglycemia. The relationship between serum vitamin D level and the required dose of insulin prescribed based on insulin therapy protocol in this group of patients was investigated. A total of 172 patients with a mean age of 46.93 ± 31.9 years were included in this study. Across the included participants, 78.8% of patients had vitamin D deficiency, 11.9% had insufficient vitamin D and 9.3% had normal vitamin D levels. There was a significant difference in mean blood sugar between the vitamin D deficiency group and the normal group. Vitamin D levels were also significantly higher in men than women. Furthermore, the HbA1C hemoglobin level in patients with Vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher compared to the group with normal levels of vitamin D. Our findings suggest that decreased vitamin D is associated with increased blood sugar and insulin requirements in patients admitted to ICU. Women are at a higher risk for vitamin D deficiency. We hope that these findings may help inform relevant treatment strategies.

ObjectivePlants are often exposed to a variety of environmental stresses such as drought and salinity, which leads to osmotic stress in the plant and ultimately reduces crop growth and productivity. Identification of effective genes at different treatments of osmotic stress can be very helpful in finding genes that are effective in tolerating plant stresses. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the hub genes of Arabidopsis model plant in osmotic stress and to introduce them for crop breeding under environmental stresses Materials and MethodsIn this study, Arabidopsis microarray data that were exposed to mannitol-induced osmotic stress for 1.5, 3, 12 and 24 hours were analyzed separately by GEO2R online tool. Genes with significant expression were identified and the most important genes at each stress level were identified using bioinformatics tools. Then, the hub genes in osmotic stress were identified and their protein interactions and biological processes were studied and discussed ResultsThe result showed that 26, 79, 138 and 184 genes had significant expression at 1.5, 3, 12 and 24 hours after stress, respectively. Based on protein network analysis and biological processes, SDA1, CRK11, CYP81F2, EDA39, PLA2A, T1K7_24, F6N7_24, AT2G25735 and MRH10_18 genes were reported as hub genes at different levels of osmotic stress. The results of molecular function analysis of hub genes showed that these genes involved in oxidative stress, response to hypoxia, regulation stomata movement, hypersensitive response, response to chitin, induced systemic resistance, indole glucosinolate biosynthetic process, defense response by callose deposition in cell wall, response to cadmium ion, phytochelatin biosynthetic process, arsenite transport, defense response to bacteria, insects, fungi, viruses and other environmental stress responsive biological process. ConclusionsIt seems that the key genes introduced in this study can be used to breed crops under environmental stresses that cause osmotic stress in plants.

Aim and Background: Sleep is one of the important elements in circadian cycles that is associated with the restoration of physical and mental strength and has a great impact on quality of life. Sports activities are among the interfering factors in improving the quality of sleep and quality of life; Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of the effect of aerobic exercise on improving the mental quality of sleep and quality of life of the elderly. Methods and Materials: This is a quasi-experimental study and the subjects of this study were 40 elderly people in 1399. For data analysis, a researcher-made demographic questionnaire was used and the standard questionnaires for measuring Petersburg quality of sleep (PSQI) and quality of life (SF-36) were used. An appropriate training protocol was used for the intervention and data were analyzed. Shapiro-Wilk, dependent parametric t-test and non-parametric Wilcoxon tests were used and statistical calculations were used by SPSS software. Findings: After aerobic exercise, the average score of sleep quality decreased from 8.1 to 6, ie 26% improvement in sleep quality and the average score of quality of life increased from 78.63 to 81.73, ie 4% improvement in quality of life was observed (p≤ 0.05). Conclusions: It seems that the intervention has a significant effect on the studied variables and sports activities improve the level of sleep quality and quality of life of the elderly.

Plant growth and development can be influenced by cold stress. Responses of plants to cold are regulated in part by transcription factors (TFs) and microRNAs, which their determination would be necessary in comprehension of the corresponding molecular cues. Here, transcriptomes of Arabidopsis and rice were analyzed to computationally determine TFs and microRNAs that are differentially responsive to cold treatment, and their co-expression networks were established. Among 181 Arabidopsis and 168 rice differentially expressed TF genes, 37 (26 novel) were up- and 16 (8 novel) were downregulated. Common TF encoding genes were from ERF, MYB, bHLH, NFY, bZIP, GATA, HSF and WRKY families. NFY A4/C2/A10 were the significant hub TFs in both plants. Phytohormone responsive cis-elements such as ABRE, TGA, TCA and LTR were the common cis-elements in TF promoters. Arabidopsis had more responsive TFs compared to rice possibly due to its greater adaptation to ranges geographical latitudes. Rice had more relevant miRNAs probably because of its bigger genome size. The interacting partners and co-expressed genes were different for the common TFs so that of the downstream regulatory networks and the corresponding metabolic pathways. Identified cold-responsive TFs in (A + R) seemed to be more engaged in energy metabolism esp. photosynthesis, and signal transduction, respectively. At post-transcriptional level, miR5075 showed to target many identified TFs in rice. In comparison, the predictions showed that identified TFs are being targeted by diverse groups of miRNAs in Arabidopsis. Novel TFs, miRNAs and co-expressed genes were introduced as cold-responsive markers that can be harnessed in future studies and development of crop tolerant varieties.

Traditionally, there have been two acceptable theories regarding the legitimacy of any phenomenon in international law, inter alia international organizations: acceptability among people and acceptability among States. However, the evolution of international law makes it inevitable to revisit the issue to create a new criterion for considering legitimacy. Nowadays, the level of commitment to international values seems to be the criterion for legitimacy according to which the situation of international organizations could be evaluated and it will make their challenges obvious. Specifically, the case study of the World Bank, the organization which has been criticized for many years could determine the way this pattern is used to address the legitimacy challenges in international law. It also, explains the reasons behind challenging World Bank structure and operation by the International Community. The organization faces serious problems from the perspective of conformity with international values. Without addressing those problems, the legitimacy of the organization will remain under question.

Abstract Background Superficial eye disorders are one of the most common complications of improper eye care in intensive care units that can lead to corneal ulcers and permanent eye damage. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the implementation of eye care protocol on the incidence of infection and superficial eye disorders in patients admitted to intensive care units. Methods This study was a cross-over clinical trial that was performed on 32 patients admitted to the intensive care unit with reduced or no blink reflex following loss of consciousness or receiving sedatives. The eye of the test group received eye care according to the protocol and the eye of the control group received the routine care of the ward. The data collection form included demographic and clinical information and the clinical score scale of superficial eye disorders, which were completed in 7 days for both eyes. Data analysis was performed by McNemar and Cochran tests with a 95 % confidence interval. Idealism and Realism have always been under considerations by different fields of studies, inter alia, the law. While Idealism pays attention to the emergence of the ideals, Realism relies on the necessity of the acceptance of existent realities. International law from the prospect of its legal basis has been an obvious area of confrontation of this two schools of thought. The International community tries to reach far and unavailable goals persistently; but, usually has been stuck in the realities of the world order. Nevertheless, international law could also form some ideals as its legal rules. Thus, international law is the place where the two ideas meet. This article is an attempt to find the answer of the question that the legal order of international law depends more on which one of the foregoing schools of thought and by which it has been more impressed. Finally, it will be observed that the international law passes the way to reach its admirable ideals by always considering the realities of the international community.

Yarrowia lipolytica, as a good cell factory to speed up the production of plant pharmaceutical components, has been considered to be one of the most important and attractive micro-organisms in recent years, due to its high secretion capacity, limited glycosylation, large range of genetic markers and molecular tools. Naringenin, as a central core of flavonoids production, plays important roles both in plants and in the treatment of different types of human diseases. For this purpose, specific naringenin biosynthesis genes from different origins were selected and introduced after comparative expression profiling in Y. lipolytica. This research indicated that chs plays the main role in the production of naringenin, so the increase copy number of this gene in each construct was investigated. The HPLC results confirmed that the construct with 5 copy numbers of chs resulted in 7.14 fold increase of naringenin extracellular titer to 90.16 mg/L in shake flask cultures. The results reported in this study demonstrated that sufficient knowledge of genes involved in the specific biosynthesis pathway, synthetic gene pathway and using Y. lipolytica as a capable and cheap host could help bioengineers to produce significant amounts of pharmaceutical components.

Introduction: The utility of capabilities of technologies as Virtual Reality (VR) and Virtual Patient Simulators (VPS) has provided rich opportunities in medical education. This study endeavored to solicit the interns and final-year medical residents' views on the benefits and potential limitations of applying these technologies in training of diagnostic and surgical procedures. Methods: In this qualitative study with a content analysis approach based on purposeful sampling, 100 interns, and final-year residents from Tehran University of Medical Sciences participated in the academic year 2018. Sampling was continued until data saturation was reached. A researcher-made questionnaire with open-end questions was employed to collect related data. The collected data were analyzed through the content analysis method. Results: The results revealed that the identified benefits generally included increasing educational opportunities, facilitating knowledge transfer, acquisition of experience and skills, technology dynamics, and effective learning. Besides, potential limitations of VPS included program standardization challenges, ethics and professional commitment, content design limitations, the unreliability of artificial diagnostic and surgery processes, cost, and sustainable support constraints. On the other hand, as executive considerations, the direct participation of clinical teams in all processes related to the development, evaluations, and quality assurance of standard programs, as well as receiving continuous feedback from students and finally the need to update programs, have been considered important. Conclusion: Given the benefits, it seems indispensable to plan to invest, develop, and implement VR-based training assistance programs considering ways to reduce potential constraints. More targeted use of this technology, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic to continuity and dynamism of the learning processes is recommended.

A 29-year-old man with a history of oculocutaneous albinism presented to the ED complaining of progressive dyspnea on exertion. One month prior to admission, the patient had begun to experience worsening dyspnea provoked by routine household activities. Additionally, he had developed a nonproductive cough, exacerbated by cold weather. He denied associated chest pain, hemoptysis, fever, chills, or night sweats. He denied any new exposures or sick contacts in the recent past. A review of systems was significant for a history of epistaxis and frequent bruising. Born in Honduras, he had immigrated to the United States approximately 10 years prior to his presentation to our facility. Furthermore, there was no family history of albinism, bleeding disorders, or pulmonary disease.

Reactive oxygen species lead to cellular damage and in plants exposed to drought stress, an increasing expressions of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes play important protective roles. The aim of this study was to evaluate response of drought tolerant ('Arg' and 'Roshan') and drought sensitive ('Arta' and 'Navid') wheat cultivars to oxidative stress caused by drought. Relative water content (RWC), water loss rate (WLR), free proline content, malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation, and peroxidase (POX) activity were measured after 2, 4, 6, and 8 h of dehydration. The tolerant cultivars had a higher RWC and lower MDA, proline content, POX activity and WLR as compared to the sensitive cultivars. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to measure the expressions of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes in chloroplastic thylakoids and stroma. The expressions of chloroplastic Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, thylakoid-bound ascorbate peroxidase, mono-dehydroascorbate reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, and chloroplastic glutathione reductase genes were up-regulated in the tolerant cultivars. A direct relationship between physiological traits and increased gene expressions was observed for both sensitive and tolerant cultivars. Overall, increasing gene expressions protect the plants from oxidative damage caused by dehydration stress and improves tolerance to this stress.

The electronic, and optical properties of rhombohedral Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3nanostructured thin film have been studied by the first–principle approach. Densityfunctional theory (DFT) has been employed to calculate the fundamental properties ofthe layers using full–potential linearized augmented plane–wave (FPLAPW) method. A2×2×1 supercell was constructed with two vacuum slabs on top and down of thesupercell. A geometry optimization was performed by PBE method. The optimized thinfilm structure was used for the intended calculations. As well, the reflectance, dielectricfunction, refractive index, of the thin film were calculated in the UV–vis region. Resultsshowed very well consistency with the available experimental and theoretical reports.The optical conductivity also followed a similar trend to that of the dielectric constants.Energy loss function of the modeled compound was also evaluated. The evaluated lossfunction showed sharp peaks in UV-vis region and followed a steady state in IR, MIRand FIR parts of spectrum.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the genetic variability and heritability of some morphological and physiological traits in Fagus orientalis Lipsky along an elevation gradient in northern forests of Iran. Beech leaves were sampled from southern and northern crown parts of healthy mature trees along an elevation gradient comprising sites situated at 700 m, 1,200 m and 1,700 m above the sea level. Our statistical analysis showed that the investigated traits differed significantly between the populations. The results indicated the lowest and the highest coefficients of variation for the high (1,700 m) and middle elevation populations (1,200 m) for leaf length, petiole length, leaf area, specific leaf area, dry weight, specific dry weight, leaf index and petiole index traits. With increasing elevation, mean leaf width, distance from leaf base to the leaf maximum width, dry weight and petiole index increased. The plasticity of leaf length, specific leaf area, specific dry weight, petiole index and petiole length peaked at middle elevation, and with increasing elevation, the plasticity of these traits declined. The distance from leaf base to the leaf maximum width had the highest coefficient of genetic (75.5%) and phenotypic (75.5%) variation. The heritability results showed that there were differences in all traits, and that the highest heritability was recorded for the distance from the leaf base to the leaf maximum width (99.95 %). The results suggest that the studied beech populations responded to the environmental changes by changing their leaf traits in different ways at different altitudes.

Without utilizing costly communication systems, the existing protection strategies fail to reliably detect the occurrence and direction of faults in the inverter-dominated microgrid. To address this issue, this paper introduces a selective and reliable non-pilot protection strategy for the inverter-dominated microgrid. The proposed protection strategy (i) does not require communication signals, (ii) incorporates phase- and sequence-domain protective elements for reliable detection of symmetrical and asymmetrical faults, (iii) improves the existing sequence-domain directional elements and effectively utilizes them for accurate determination of the fault direction in the presence of inverter-interfaced distributed energy resources, (iv) selectively protects the inverter-dominated microgrid against internal and external faults, (v) is robust against the grid-connection mode of the microgrid, and (vi) enables fuse protection of laterals and non-critical circuits. The acceptable performance of the proposed protection strategy is verified through comprehensive fault studies conducted on a realistic study system simulated in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. This paper also demonstrates that the proposed protection strategy can be implemented using an off-the-shelf digital relay.

Abstract Purpose An experiment was designed to introduce a substitute for peat, which is used in the production of bedding for the cultivation of ornamental plants and is imported and expensive. For this reason, the usability of peanut shells and Azolla, whose accumulation in the environment causes environmental problems, is a major research question. Methods In this work, Dieffenbachia amoena was grown in a growing medium that had substituted peanut shells and Azolla mixes composts (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 100 v/v %) for peat. The controls received only peat: perlite (2:1 v/v) without composts. Results It was found that, as the substitution of compost increased, nutrients also increased in the growing medium. Nonetheless, the nutrients led to minor changes in the leaves. As compost increased, the bulk density of the growing media decreased (0.17, 0.16, 0.15, and 0.15 g cm−3). The range of substrate physical properties, such as container capacity, air-filled porosity, and total porosity, was within the recommended range. The 15–100% substitution of compost increased the electrical conductivity and pH of the growing media. The 30% compost treatment led to significant differences in the final height (32.06 cm), trunk diameter (11.66 mm), stem and leaf fresh weight (57.52 g), and stem and leaf dry weight (5.10 g) in comparison with the controls. Conclusions Considering the high price of peat in comparison with compost, replacing peat with 30% compost is economically preferable. Compost was thus found to be a good alternative to peat as an ornamental plants growing medium.

Rapeseed is the third-largest source of plant oil and one of the essential oil plants worldwide. Cold stress is one of the critical factors that affect plant yield. Therefore, improving cold stress tolerance is necessary for yield increase. The present study investigated BnCAT1 and BnCSD1 genes’ expression behavior in a tolerant and sensitive cultivar under cold stress (4 °C). Besides, protein-protein interaction networks of CATs and CSDs enzymes, and their association with other antioxidant enzymes were analyzed. Moreover, the microRNAs targeting BnCAT1 and BnCSD1 genes were predicted. This study indicated many direct and indirect interactions and the association between the components of the plant antioxidant system. However, not only did the CATs and CSDs enzymes have a relationship with each other, but they also interacted directly with ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase enzymes. Also, 23 and 35 effective microRNAs were predicted for BnCAT1 and BnCSD1 genes, respectively. The gene expression results indicated an elevated expression of BnCAT1 and BnCSD1 in both tolerant and sensitive cultivars. However, this increase was more noticeable in the tolerant cultivar. Thus, the BnCSD1 gene had the highest expression in the early hour of cold stress, especially in the 12th h, and the BnCAT1 gene showed the highest expression in the 48th h. This result may indicate a functional relationship between these enzymes.

To understand the Eco physiological adaptation mechanisms of Fagus orientalis Lipesk to altitude changes, the activities of Peroxidase (POD), Catalase (CAT), and Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in leaves of Fagus orientalis in different altitudes (A1: 700 m, A2: 1200 m, A3: 1700 m above sea level) Was studied in the forests of Guilan. The sampling of leaves was collected from southern and northern parts of the crown of healthy and mature trees. The results of analysis variance showed that there was a significant difference between and within the population for the activity of catalase and peroxidase enzymes at the probability level of 0.05 and with increasing altitude, the activity of catalase and peroxidase were increased but the activity of Ascorbate peroxidase enzyme was initially increased and its level of activity decreased from the middle altitude with increasing altitude. Also, the results showed that the enzymatic activity of peroxidase and catalase in the northern leaves was more than the southern leaves that collected in crown of the trees.

Background & Aim: The prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) can decrease the duration of mechanical ventilation, length of hospital stay, and healthcare costs. One of the interventions is raising the head of bed (HOB) to 45 degrees. This study was perfomed with the aim of determining the effect of the HOB elevation to 45 degree on the incidence of VAP on hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Materials & Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial. It consisted of 80 patients who were under mechanical ventilation and hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from February to July 2016 in the selected governmental hospitals affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences. The samples were assigned to two groups, i.e. control and intervention, using a randomised block method. The patients in intervention and control groups had HOB elevation to 45 degree and routine position for three consecutive days. In both groups, HOB elevation in every shift was measured using the goniometer and was recorded by nurses in the angel of bed form. At the end of the third day, ventilator-associated pneumonia was evaluated, using the Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS). Data analysis was performed with chi-square, Fisher’s exact test, and T- Test via SPSS v.20. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between two groups with regard to VAP (P-value=0.002). The incidence of VAP were 52.5% in the control group and 20% in the intervention group. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, HOB elevation of 45 degree were effective in preventing VAP. Hence, it is recommended that the patients hospitalized in ICU,and under mechanical ventilation, should be positioned 45 degree according to their conditions.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the antibacterial activity of silver (Ag) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles incorporated into an experimental dentin bonding agent formulation. Materials and Methods: Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles at 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 1 wt% concentrations were incorporated into the adhesives. The suspensions were sonicated to ensure homogenous dispersion of nanoparticles in the adhesive system. Formulation was composed of acetone, 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane (Bis-GMA), 1,6-bis-[2-methacryloyloxyethyl carbonyl amino]-2,4,4-trimethylhexane (UDMA), trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and photoinitiator, with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the stabilizer. We counted the colony-forming units (CFU%) of two cariogenic bacteria, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus), that were exposed to the powdered light cured adhesive specimens.
